StatusPage.io Gains a Foothold in the Market by Partnering with New Relic

For many consumers, corporate transparency is a competitive differentiator. StatusPage

is a platform that encourages greater transparency by building and hosting beautiful status

pages that are brand-compliant and hassle-free.

How StatusPage Deploys New Relic Internally

StatusPage customers rely on the company’s service to

keep their users informed in the event of an outage.

So when it comes to application performance, Status-

Page has no room for error—the application simply

must be up and running without exception.

New Relic plays a critical role in maintaining that level

of mission-critical, always-on performance. “We’re a

small team, so everyone relies on New Relic in some

capacity,” says Klein. “Our front-end developer is

constantly looking at New Relic Browser to understand

the real user’s experience. On the back end, we keep

a close eye on New Relic APM. And our sales and mar-

keting folks are very interested in the big data analytics

available through New Relic Insights.”

For Klein, the Transaction Traces feature in New Relic

is especially helpful. “We’re always working to keep

things snappy on the back end,” he says. “Transaction

Traces shows us the source of any bottleneck from

anywhere in the stack, down to the line of code. I haven’t

seen anything like that from any other APM provider.”

Responding to Customer Demand for Integration with New Relic

When StatusPage launched in 2013, the company began looking at

ways to add value by integrating with other technologies. New Relic

immediately emerged as the number-one opportunity for a mutually

beneficial partnership. “Our first customers kept coming to us and

saying, ‘We’ve got this awesome data in New Relic—throughput,

error rate, response times—and we’d love to put it on our status page,’”

says Scott Klein, founder and CEO of StatusPage. “When we took

a closer look at our customer base, we saw that almost 50 percent

of them were already using New Relic. So why not bring the two

solutions together and make an even better experience all around?”

Linking to Real-Time Metrics in Just a Few Clicks

StatusPage participates in New Relic Connect, a partnership program

that brings in-depth APM data directly into the StatusPage user

interface. Klein and his team needed just a few hours to link the two

services with help from New Relic’s well-documented API.

The result is a seamless integration that can be activated in a matter

of minutes. When New Relic customers sign up for the StatusPage

service, they simply enter their API key and select which metrics they

want to include. “You have the option to display metrics like response

time, Apdex score, and error rate on your status page,” says Danny

Olinsky, a co-founder at StatusPage. “In literally four clicks, our

customers can have great-looking sparkline metrics for the previous

30 seconds or the previous 30 days, all updated in real time.”

“When you’re a startup, it’s a major win to collaborate with a well-recognized brand like New Relic. There’s no question that this partnership has helped us gain a foothold in the market.”

Gaining Credibility with Help from a Trusted Partner

For StatusPage customers, the integration with New Relic helps min-

imize inbound support tickets. “If I’m experiencing issues with a

website, my first question is whether it’s just me or if it’s affecting

everyone,” says Olinsky. “Now I can go to the status page, look at

the New Relic metrics, and get the information I need without

contacting support.”

“Going forward, the most successful SaaS companies are going to

be the ones that are transparent with their customers,” adds Klein.

“If I’m transparent and showing my response time, error rates,

and throughput, I’ll have a better shot at gaining and retaining

customers who value that kind of openness.”

In addition, StatusPage gains considerable credibility from its part-

nership with New Relic—a significant advantage for such a new

company. “When you’re a startup, it’s a major win to collaborate with

a well-recognized brand like New Relic,” says Klein. “There’s no

question that this partnership has helped us gain a foothold in

the market.”
