Gainesville Orchid Society Newsletter President’s Message W e are in the middest of February but it seems like April at least, judging by the pollen in the air and the orchids in bloom at my place! Dendrobium nobile hybrids of all colors and shades, Phalaenopsis and Cattleya hybrids,Cymbidium and Ansellia are all in, or about to, or have just ended their blooming. What can await us in the real Spring I am anxious to see! January‚ AOS presentation by Wally Wilder was delivered to one of our largest audiences, and from the beginning and all through the visually stunning talk on Florida native orchids, all present watched and listened with such rapt attention that a pin being dropped would have been clearly heard. GOS has a new slate of officers and committee chairs, and we welcome everyone’s comments and suggestions to make our meetings and activities ever more pleasant and interesting. One suggestion that we will implement immediately is the permanent use of our microphone and sound system so that all in the audience can share equally in our program. Thanks and see you all at our next meeting. By John Ingram February 2013 Beginners’ Class Program February meeting speaker: Time: 7:30 PM Louis Del Favero Topic: Dendrobiums L ouis received a V. Rothchildiana from a family friend for his 12th birthday. In 1968 he began working for Jungle Orchids after school, weekends and summers. They imported tree fern and orchids from Guatemala. A year later he established Louis Del Favero Orchids in Miami. It was also during this time that he took a collecting trip with Fred Fuchs to British Honduras (now Belize) and Honduras. After which Louis was consumed by a desire to view orchids in their native habitats. This started 20 years of traveling to Mexico, Central & South America and the Caribbean. In 1981 Louis moved to his current location in rural Tampa where he used his extensive contacts to continue importing species orchids from their native countries. His current location in Tampa has over 13,000 square feet of greenhouse space open to the public. Approximately 50% of their inventory is comprised of warm tolerant species. The remainder are largely from the genera Encyclia, Dendrobium, Oncidium and compact to large flowered Cattleyas with a strong emphasis on fragrant orchids. Del Favero will have orchids for sale. Next Meeting: February 25 Kanapaha Botanical Gardens 7:00 PM —Carolyn Robinson will present the Beginners’ Program on Paphiopedilums.

AMAOS (see photo) a no name ascocenda and Ctna (now Guaritonia) Jamaica lsquoRedrsquo have all been in bloom What a wonderful Valentinersquos gift theyrsquove been The super busy time of the year is fast approaching - lots of shows new orchid additions to the greenhouse and thoughts of repotting orchids As the days increase in length many orchids begin new growth My oncidium hybrids are already beginning to show new growth and will need repotting soon Itrsquos less of a shock to orchids if they are repotted early in the growth cycle in order to lessen damage to new roots Orchids need to be repotted at different times depending on their growth cycle Some do better when repotted in the fall others in late winter or in the spring Observation will give you a clue when to do the job Young orchids will grow faster if moved into pots a size or two larger at the beginning of their growing season Mature orchids need repotting once every 2-3 years before the medium decomposes Orchids grown on plaques cork or wood donrsquot require remounting for a number

of years (Laelia lundii a minature in my collection has been on the same piece of cork for 13 years) Cymbidiums only need to be repotted every 3-4 years Calanthes and phaius benefit from repotting almost every year In my January column I forgot to talk about my Diplocaulabium kirchianum It is grown on a wood slab high in my greenhouse In late

December it was a mass of tiny white flowers for about a week it looked like snow Red Alert Soft scale is appearing now Irsquove found one plant (not an orchid) that has been infested Luckily I caught it before the scale spread to other plants This time of year scale can spread rapidly so watch for it

GOS page 7Away Shows 2013

Springtime is just around the corner and itrsquos time for away shows and plant festivals We have the

Jacksonville show coming up in March and we will also be setting up a table for Kanapaha Botanical Gardenrsquos annual Spring Festival Tallahassee holds their orchid show in April and in May Volusia County Orchid Society will be having their show

We hope that many of you will be interested in participating in away shows at some level In addition to plants for the displays we need drivers and vehicles to help transport plants and suppliesequipment We also need folks to help with set up and take down and to help with registration for the Jacksonville and

Tallahassee shows

You do not have to be an experienced grower to enter plants andor to participate in the fun If you help with set-up you will have the advantage of seeing the show in advance and the opportunity to buy from the vendors We hope you will check your calendar and sign up to help Some funds are available to defer the cost of gasoline for members who help with transportBelow please note the dates of our upcoming showsFor more details about away shows for 2013 go to the GOS website
