Letters to the editor Gain power through improved communication As a risk management representative, I am employed with the St Paul Fire& Marine Insur- ance Company. I work with the St Paul insured hospitals in Georgia. We work closely with the risk management programs in all areas of the hospital. Basically, we assist facilities in pre- venting malpractice. I read with interest your editorial, "Think spinach, not 'poor little nurse' image." (AORN Journal, May 1982.) I agree that knowledge, position, and education are powerful, but you failed to emphasize the most powerful tool available to anyone in the medical pro- fession-effective communication. All the knowledge, education, and degrees are worth- less if the individual has created a barrier be- cause of poor communication. Many times this barrier is not built by what is said, but the manner in which it is said. I think there are times when our approach to problems has be- come less than professional. This has created problems between nurses and administrators and physicians. These problems only create situations that are not in the patient's best interest.
