    Welcome!

I am pleased to welcome you to the iGUIDE, a unique resource guide to ICTD initiatives in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area.

e idea for this guide firs t arose at the S ilicon Valley Challenge

Summit in November 2006 and the subs equent e UN meets Si licon Valley meeting which Intel hosted in February 2007. Seeingthe impressive number of local ICTDplayers at suchmeetings, we were looking for ways in which they could s tay connected. e iGUIDE presents this opportunity.

AstheChairmanoftheUN-Global AlIianceforICTandDevelopment, whichis joiningforces withtheRiOSInstituteandUCBerkeleys School

of Information to produce this guide, I am especially pleased to see thatit is coming to fruition.

is print directory will enable ICTD practitioners from all sectors to reference each others work and on the basis of mutual knowledge establish collaborations that will leverage resources. Ultimately, thebeneficiaries will be the people served by the various ICTD initiatives,in the service of the Millennium Development Goals.

Intel is glad to support this important initiative to strengthen the localICTD community.

    ixForeword ix

    Dear users of the iGUIDE!

e iGuide: Si licon Valley and San Francisco Bay i s both a blueprint andan aspiration.

Ablueprint is anidea, unrealized, ofsomethingyet to bebuilt. Bytaking

a roll call ofICTDinitiatives andpractitioners herein SiliconValleyandthe San Francisco Bay Area and by compiling who is doing what, where and how in one easily accessible database, the RiOS Institute, together with the UN-GAID and the School of Information at UC Berkeley has started a process that can now be emulated in other parts of the world.

We look forward to this first iGUIDE blueprint being util ized by ourpartners in India, Brazil, South Africa, Russia and other countries and

regions where ICTD activities are growing. It is our intention to expandand scale this small beginning here in Si licon Valley internationally. Our a im is to help a ll of the marvelous organizations and individuals working to harness the benefits of ICTs for development. But most ofall enjoy their broader ICT and Development community, locally and eventually globally.

easpiration is for the iGUIDEto helpmakeconnections andbecomea catalyst for exchanges and collaborations. is is also the work we are

pursuing at the RiOS Institute, togetherwiththeUNGlobal AllianceforICT and Development. To build such partnerships across sectors;social, corporate, academic and foundations. is depends on individuals andgroups taking the next step to reach out and talk to each other by sharingtheir time, ideas, challenges and best practices.

Innovation is always to be found in the accidental connection, conversation or daydream after encounters with unexpected chance.

e iGUIDE is a resource that can help capitalize on such chances and realize innovations by providing important information in a s imple, easily accessible manner.

iGuide: ICTD Resources in Si licon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area2

Welcome to the first-ever guide to ICTD resources in Si licon Valleyand the San Francisco Bay Area. We have worked hard to make this directoryoforganizationsandinitiatives that harness thepowerofICTsfor global development as comprehensive, accessible and user friendly as possible.

While we could not have assembled the information here without the

help of all of you who provided us with feedback and encouragement, a special thanksgoes to theiGUIDEteamofthe Social Entrepreneurshipin ICTD seminar taught by the RiOS Institute at the S chool ofInformation at UC Berkeley in 2007.

e 55 entries in this guide have been divided into four sectors : socialorganizations (23 entries) , corporations and corporate foundations (1 5 entries), academy(9 entries) andfoundations(8 entries). Eachindividual

entry lists the most important information for each organization: URL,mission, areas of activity and location, as well as contact information. Eachentry also is classifiedaccordingto its type of activity: Funding(F), Practice ( P), Research (R) and Training (T).

We now rely on you to keep the iGUIDE current and complete, so pleaseemail us your updates, comments and suggestions. More importantly, pass i t on the colleagues whom we have missed in this first edition and who should be included in the next one.

We hope that the iGUIDE wi ll become dog-eared rather than dust- covered in your offices and backpacks and are looking forward to yourfeedback.

    I . SOCIAL ORGAN I ZATIONS

With 23 entries, including nonprofit organizations, NGOs and socialenterprises, the social sector is the largest in the iGUIDE, attesting to the crucial role social organizations of all kinds play in the local ICTDarea.

Some of the organizations li sted here are for-profit enterprises , butbecause of their social mission and smaller size, they have been included

in the social sector. Most of the organizations present here are well- established groups with proven track records, but we have also includedinitiatives that are just getting off the ground, and we are always on the look-out for new projects.

Included here are ins titutions that are pursuing ICTD activities exclusively. eir work spans a wide variety of activities, from providingaccess to ICTs through low-cost devices or innovative connectivitysolutions to human r ights , microfinance and economic developmentinitiatives.

e 15 entries in this s ec tion comprise 7 large and medium-sizedcorporations in the high-tech industry, 6 corporate foundations and 2 smaller corporations. Together, they provide important products and services that are mainly a imed at emerging economies, as well asdisadvantaged groups within the USA.

Vital Wave Consulting, one of the corporations included in this section, describes the role of the private sector in development as such:

e private sector has a direct and positive impact on the developingworld through the expansion of local business ecosystems , thecommercialization of new products and services designed specificallyfor these markets, and business models that increase the affordabilityof productivity tools. Because these efforts are profitable, they are more sustainable than philanthropic activities. Certainly, there is a place for philanthropy and CSR in addressing the challenges in the developingworld. But a sustainableapproachto addressingglobal povertyincreases the longevity and s ize of resources committed to such investments .And corporations that identify credible methods for measuring andpromoting the social and economic impact of their business efforts to the development community will experience greater business value through increased brand equity, visibi lity and an enhanced ability to

    influence local policies.
