    The students have now

    completed the final

    assessment challenges for

    the Materials unit and we

    have just begun our new

    unit about "Messages." The

    provocation for this unit

    started with a "silent

    morning" when the

    students had to

    communicate without

    words and only use hand

    signs and body language.

    This unit includes writing

    letters, poetry and

    exploring the various forms

    of communication. Please

    can you write a "secret"

    letter to your child and

pass this to the teacher of

    your child and we will

    place this in the grade

    level letterbox.

Book Week and Mother Tongue Week has

been a very exciting time for the students.

They have enjoyed listening to stories read in

    different languages French, Korean and

Dutch. Wednesday was a great day of

activities, a fun assembly and a deliciousbreakfast. Parents, thank you for sending

along the wonderful selection of food for the

ES to share. The range of literacy experiences

included stories from New Zealand and

    Australia, and activities included cooking,

visual art and construction. The students were

also involved in "I Read to the Head" when

they had the opportunity to read to Ms Jacq

    Mr Bruce and Ms Karen.

We hope that this week exposed the studentto a new selection of books and encouraged

their love for reading and the "world" in

    literature.

    Literacy

We are now completing unit 7 in Mathematics

and moving onto unit 8. In this new unit, we

will review basic fraction concepts, use

fractions to name parts of a whole and a

collection, find pairs of equivalent fractions

and solve number stories involving fractions.

These are the beginning concepts of division

It would be useful for the students to be

involved in tasks such as cooking and

    measuring in fractions at home.
