Continued from G1
He’s coached under the late Rick Majerus at Utah (1999-2004). He’s coached inside Pauley Pavilion, the house built by legendary UCLA coach John Wooden.
Garson, who is 37, saw his career reach amazing heights as an assistant under Ben Howland during a seven-year run at UCLA. Three straight Fi-nal Four appearances (2006-08). A trip to a national title game (2006). Four conference titles.
But Howland was fired in March, which means his assistants were dis-missed, too. And that’s when Holly — now the C of I athletic director — reached out and hired Garson as the 15th coach in Coyotes’ men’s basket-
ball history. Los Angeles to Caldwell. “There’s a great book by a great
football coach named Frosty Wester-ing: Make The Big Time Where You Are,” Garson said on the day of his introductory press conference. “I’m looking forward to making this a spe-cial place.”
His resume boasts the nation’s No. 1 ranked recruiting classes in 2008 and 2012. He showed those skills im-mediately upon being hired by the C of I, scouting Southern California prospects Josh Wilson and Joe Vaz during his first week. Later, Garson found Demetrius Perkins, another California recruit.
“All three of those guys are just tre-mendous young men,” Garson said.
His practices begin with the Yotes Rush — a moniker of the Laker Rush during the 1980s heyday of Magic
Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He’s coached players such as Darren Collison (L.A. Clippers), and relates the experience to Yotes freshman point guard Emanuel Morgan, urging him to play defensively just like the former Pac-10 steals leader.
Holly, who owned a 56-game home winning streak from 1983-87, said he’s took it “personally” that his program has been mediocre in recent years.
Now it appears he found a talented coach — and someone who gets the concept of honoring tradition.
“It’s really been fun for me to con-tinue right where I left off a year ago at UCLA, to be part of a program where the tradition really matters,” Garson said. “The people that have been a part of this program in the past really care.
“We have an opportunity to bring joy to their lives.”
