Ideas for reading

Getting started• Look together at the cover of the book and read the title. Ask what might live

in an oak tree. List ideas on a whiteboard.

• Walk through the book with the children, leaving pp22–23 until later.

Point to some of the labels and ask the children what they say. Use the

pictures to prompt them. Check that children understand the word label. • Introduce new words as you read, for example trunk, mole, and check for

understanding.

• Model strategies for reading labels and tricky words, for example using the

picture, looking at the shape of the word, looking at the initial sound.

Reading and responding• Ask the children to read the book aloud and independently up to p21,

and observe, prompt and praise for one-to-one matching and fluency.

• Ask children to reread the book in pairs, helping each other to read

the labels.

• Using pp22–23, play ‘ Who lives where?’ and discuss the likely habitat and

activities for each creature.

Returning to the book• Make a collection of the labels from the book, with the teacher writing the

words, to be used as a display of animals who live in an oak tree.

• Ask children to suggest other animals that might live in the oak tree.

• In pairs, ask them to play ‘I am thinking of an animal …’, where one child

describes the animal in the book and the other uses the pictures in the book

to identify it.

38

G1_volume_D.indb 38 16/08/13 2:17 PM

Checking and moving on• Use the pictures to discuss what it would be like for individual creatures to

live in an oak tree (for example cold, wet, safe, busy, noisy).

• Ask children to choose an animal to hot-seat, describing their life in the

oak tree.

• Visit a tree and look for creatures and parts of the tree.

• Draw and label the tree.
