The&Bishop,&with&his&Council,&is&responsible&for&articulating&a&vision&to&the&diocese&that&is&credible&and&hopeful.&In&order&to&do&this&we&have&drawn&on&the&inheritance&of&faith,&ancient&tradition,&our&own&context&and&openness&to&God&in&order&to&respond&to&key&drivers&that&are&present&within&the&life&of&the&church&and&outside&it.&We&have&articulated&this&hope&in&a&document&called& ‘The&Learning&Church&in&the&Diocese&of&Bangor’.&This&commitment&involves&our&becoming& learning&disciples&who& let& the&marks&of&Christ&be& found& in&every&area&of&our&common&life.&The&concept&of&a&Ministry&Area&is&central&to&this&approach.&The&redefining&of&church&life&has&involved&much&more&than&geographical&and&Constitutional&factors&because&it&involves&a&different&way&of&doing&ministry&and&of&living&as&a&faithful&disciple&of&Christ.&The&inherited&pattern&of&one&clericWone&church&can&no&longer&be&sustained&on&financial&grounds&and&in&an&age&where&travel,&belonging&and&identity&establish&community&rather&than&just&geography,& the& current& parochial& structure& no& longer& serves& the& purpose& for& which& it& was& once& created.&Churches& which& offer& many& ministries,& are& varied& in& their& activities,& which& evolve& new& structures& of&governance,&are&well&resourced&and&purposeful&in&their&aims&must&become&the&template&for&the&whole&diocese.&Ministry&Areas&live&more&closely&in&relation&to&one&another&than&single&parishes&and&to&ecumenical&friends&who&inhabit& the&same&space&so&that&pooling&of& talent&and&ministry&allows&a&broad&area&to&be&encompassed&within&our&mission&horizon.&

The& identity& of& a& Diocese& and& a& more& creative& mission& within& it& is& enhanced& if& portfolio& work& is& more&prominently& active& in& our& life.& Clearer& mission& imperatives& and& actions& which& transform& individuals& and&communities&are&required.&

Achieving&our&aims&for&the&Learning&Church&will&not&happen&without&clear&strategy&and&appropriate&resourcing.&This&requires&a&coWordinated&response&across&the&whole&diocese.&

2.&From&the&Archdeacon&of&Bangor&&&Anglesey&&

&&The&living&of&Conwy&and&Gyffin&is&amongst&the&most&attractive&posts&that&the&Diocese&of&Bangor&has&to&offer.&It&is&vacant&for&the&first&time&in&28&years&following&the&retirement&of&the&Revd&Chancellor&Peter&Russell&Jones&in&June.&&&The&medieval& town&of&Conwy& is&one&of& the&most&beautiful& in& the&Diocese&of&Bangor.& & Located&at& the&point& at&which&the&Conwy&river&enters&the&sea&and&set&against&the&stunning&mountainous&backdrop,&Edward&the&First’s&magnificent&castle&and&the&small&walled&town&which& it&shelters,& is&a&magnet& for& tourists& throughout& the&year.&&&&&&&Conwy& is& also& the& administrative& centre& for& the& County& Borough&which& bears& its& name& and&which& stretches&from&Llanfairfechan&in&the&west&across&to&the&River&Clwyd&in&the&east,&extending&as&far&as&Dolwyddelan&in&the&south&and&serving&a&resident&population&of&115,000.&&&The&parishes& contain& two&magnificent& churches.& St.&Mary’s&Church& in&Conwy&originated&as& the& church&of& the&Cistercian&Abbey&of&St.&Mary&and&All&Saints,&Aberconwy,&founded&in&about&1190.&This&was&the&principal&religious&establishment& of& the& princes& of& Gwynedd& during& the& last& century& of& Welsh& independence.& Following& the&conquest&by&Edward&I,&the&Abbey&was&moved&up&river&to&Maenan,&and&the&building&was&adapted&to&become&the&parish&church.&St&Benedict’s&Church&in&Gyffin&is&believed&to&be&an&even&older&foundation&that&was&reWdedicated&to&St&Benedict&under&the&monastic&influence&of&Aberconwy&Abbey.&&Over&the&last&few&years,&the&Diocesan&vision&(referred&to&by&Bishop&Andrew)&has&entailed&asking&two&important&questions.&Firstly,&how&can&we&best& resource&people& to&grow&as&disciples&and&ministers?&And,& secondly,&how&might& our& church& become& more& dynamic,& missional,& pilgrim& focused,& rooted,& serving,& inclusive& and&professional?& Focus& on&both& these& questions& has& led& to& a& new&energy&being& released& and& a& discipleship& and&ministry& which& is& growing& in& collaboration& and& currently& being& expressed& through& two& major& structural&changes&in&this&north&eastern&part&of&the&Diocese.&&The& first& is& the& reWorganisation&of& the&mainland&part&of& the&Archdeaconry&of&Bangor&and&Anglesey& into&eight&Ministry&Areas.&This& followed&a& recognition& that& the&medieval&parish& system& is&breaking&down&and&does&not&allow&for&the&sort&of&collaboration&that&we&recognize&should&be&at&the&heart&of&ministry.&Ministry&in&each&area&will&in&future&be&led&by&a&team&made&up&of&clergy,&readers&and&licensed&lay&ministers&under&the&leadership&of&the&Vicar&and&Team&Leader.&It&is&anticipated&that&Conwy&will&be&the&hub&of&an&area,&which&is&likely&to&grow&in&the&future,&encompassing&part&of&the&Conwy&valley,&south&of&the&town.&&The&second&change&has&been&the&establishment&of&the&Bangor&Synod.&This&is&a&completely&new&venture&which&replaces&the&three&Area&Deaneries&of&Arllechwedd&(of&which&Conwy&was&a&part),&Arfon&and&Ogwen.&It&provides&us& with& a& platform& to& collaborate& across& Ministry& Areas& and& an& opportunity& for& fellowship,& support& and&training.&It&held&its&inaugural&meeting&in&September&and&will&meet&four&times&during&2015.&&&A& third& exciting& development& has& been& the& appointment& of& a& CYFME& (Children,& Young& People& and& Families&Ministry& Enabler).& The& recent& licensing& of& Jennifer& Roberts& to& this& full& time& post& across& the& Synod& area& has&provided& us& with& a& fantastic& resource& to& increase& our& ministry& with& children,& young& people& and& families.&Jennifer’s&work&across&the&area&will&help&us&to&connect&with&‘a&lost&generation’&by&working&closely&with&Ministry&Area&Leaders&and&Teams&in&enabling&and&encouraging&work&in&this&area.&&It& is& important& to& stress& that& whilst& this& post& is& advertised& as& Priest& in& Charge,& it& anticipates& the& eventual&creation&of&a&Ministry&Area&and&the&successful&candidate&will&be&expected&to&take&on&the&role&of&Ministry&Area&Leader&Designate.&This&will&involve&both&preparing&the&parishes&for&future&change&and&building&a&ministry&team&who&will&be&in&place&to&lead&the&new&Ministry&Area&when&it&is&established.&&Please&no&do&not&hesitate&to&contact&me&if&you&require&an&informal&conversation&regarding&this&post.&&&Paul&Davies&&&&The&Venerable&Paul&Davies,&Archdeacon&of&Bangor&&&Anglesey !&The&Archdeaconry,&Belmont&Road,&Bangor,&Gwynedd,&LL57&2LL ! 01248&354360&&"&[email protected]&

3.&The&Diocese&of&Bangor&&

!&&&The&Diocese&of&Bangor&covers&the&whole&of& the&northWwestern&quarter&of&Wales,& taking& in&the&old&counties&of&Anglesey,& Caernarfon,& Meirionnydd& and& the& northern& portion& of& Montgomeryshire,& and& is& roughly& coWterminous&with&the&ancient&kingdom&of&Gwynedd.&It&extends&from&the&port&of&Holyhead&in&the&north&to&the&rural&market&town&of&Llanidloes&in&the&south;&from&the&holy&island&of&Bardsey&in&the&west&to&Llandudno&in&the&east,&along&the&North&Wales&coastal&strip;&behind&which&lies&Snowdonia&and&the&most&mountainous&areas&of&Wales.&Distances& travelled& by& diocesan& staff& are& considerable;& one& can& travel& for& three& hours& without& leaving& the&diocese& to&minister& to& small& rural& communities,& across&mountainous& terrain& and& through& some& of& the&most&spectacular& landscape& in& Britain.& Around& its& coasts,& the& diocese& has& numerous& small& communities,& seaside&resorts& and& ports.& Inland,& there& are& a& large& number& of& small& postWindustrial& communities& (following& the&collapse&of& slate&mining),& and&a&variety&of& rural&and&agricultural& communities,&where&unemployment& is&high,&much&of&the&&agriculture&is&on&marginal&land&(except&for&a&small&area&in&Powys)&and&populations&are&small&and&scattered.& Culturally,& there& are& huge& differences& between& seaside& towns,&mountain& village& communities& and&those&in&the&fertile&valleys&of&midWWales.&&Gifted&young&people&often&leave&for&higher&education&and&to&find&careers.&Although&light&industry&projects&have&been&established,&problems&of&employment&continue&the&drift&away.&There&is&very&little&industry.&Tourism,&the&local&authorities,&government&departments,&public& services&and&agriculture&provide&most&employment.&Large&numbers&of&people&continue&to&come&from&other&parts&of&the&country&to&retire&here,&with&consequent&demands&on&services&and& local&community&changes.&A&major&role& for& the&Church& is& to&affirm&and&build&confidence&and&selfWbelief& in& such& communities& so& that& their& voices& are& heard& and& their& needs&met.&More& recent& social& and&economic&change&has&contributed&to&problems&and&tensions&within&the&communities:&the&decline&of&traditional&industries,&unemployment,&rural&deWpopulation,&the&drift&of&local&WelshWspeaking&people&away,&the&continuing&influx&of&retired&people&from&the&Midlands&and&the&North,&the&weakening&of&village&and&community&life&by&the&growth& of& second& homes,& the& North& Wales& Expressway& now& facilitating& commuter& homes& for& Chester,&Manchester&and&Liverpool;&the&closure&of&local&hospitals,&the&shortage&of&industry,&geographical&isolation,&poor&communication,& lack&of&adequate&public& transport&and&other&amenities,&are&problems&which&affect&all&people&and&impinge&heavily&on&the&life&and&witness&of&the&Church.&For&all&the&difficulties,&the&general&mood&is&upWbeat&and&optimistic&among&the&local&authorities&as&the&area&seeks&to&evolve&into&a&new&diversified&economy.&

&Welsh& is& the& first& language&and&natural&means&of& communication& for& three&quarters&of& the&population&of& the&diocese& as& a& whole,& rising& in& some& areas& to& in& excess& of& 90%,& with& proportionally& larger& EnglishWspeaking&communities& in& the& seaside& resorts,& the& historic& towns,& and& the& Deanery& of& Arwystli& in& the& south.&With& the&exception& of& Arwystli,& almost& all& parishes& need& to& provide& for& both& languages.&The& diocese& has& adopted& a&Language&Policy,&approved&by&the&Welsh&Language&Board.&The&Diocese&of&Bangor&established&a&Diocesan&Link&with& the&Diocese&of&Lango,&Northern&Uganda,& in&2003&and&was& the&culmination&of&reciprocal&visits&by&people&from&Bangor&and&Lango&since&1994.&&Currently,& the& Diocese& is& divided& into& two& archdeaconries;& Bangor& (and& Anglesey)& which& contains& seven&Deaneries&and&Meirionndd,&which&contains&five.&&&

&In& October& 2012,& the& Diocese& of& Bangor& launched& its& Vision& Document& at& the& Diocesan& Conference& called&A"Vision"for"the"Learning"Church.&This&document&outlines&the&goals&we&share&as&a&diocese&and&is&included&with&this&Job&Description.&As&a&consequence&of&consultations&at&parish&and&deanery&levels&with&clergy&and&lay&people&it&was& agreed& that& we& needed& to& address& a& serious& situation& in& which& numbers& of& Sunday&worshippers& were&declining,& those&once&associated&with& the&church& in& their& teenage&years&had&almost&completely&vanished&and&that&was&little&capacity&and&energy&to&break&new&ground.&&&This&document&outlines&hopes&and&aspirations.&It&is&set&within&the&context&of&the&parish&system&being&replaced&by& Ministry& Areas& in& which& clergy& and& laity& share& responsibility& for& the& life& of& their& communities.& We& are&currently&in&the&process&of&developing&Leadership&Teams&across&these&Ministry&Areas&and&establishing&a&new&forum& for& wider& diocesan& coWoperation& through& Archidiaconal& Synods.& The& work& of& Ministry& Areas& are&supported&by:&&Archdeacons& –&whose& roles& have& been& developed& as&Missional& Accompanists& in& the&Diocese.& Visitations& now&take&place&in&the&context&of&a&Parish&Review&as&Archdeacons&come&alongside&a&parish&by&spending&a&few&days&in&each&Ministry&Area&every&year&to&help&parish&development&and&mission&action&planning.&&&St"Seiriol"Centre&–&This&is&our&College&of&Discipleship&which&trains&people&for&discipleship&and&ministry.&Whilst&it&has&been&established&for&ten&years,&it&has&recently&moved&up&a&gear&with&the&appointment&of&two&full&time&staff.&&CYFME’s&–&In&addition,&the&Diocese&has&invested&in&the&appointment&of&four&‘Children,&Young&People&and&Family&Ministry&Enablers’&in&the&Diocese&to&help&Ministry&Areas&to&connect&with&a&‘lost&generation’.&Currently,&we&have&two&working&in&the&Archdeaconry&of&Meirionnydd&and&two&in&the&Archdeaconry&of&Bangor&and&Anglesey.&&&Diocesan"Centre&–&The&Centre&staff&at&Bangor,&under&the&leadership&of&Sion&Rhys&Evans&(the&Diocesan&Secretary)&seek&to&provide&all&the&administrative&help&that&they&can.&&

4.&The&Bangor&Synod&&

It& is&envisaged&that&the&8&Ministry&Areas& in&the&Bangor&Synod&will&eventually&divided&up&as& follows&(by&the&end&of&2014&6&of&the&8&areas&will&have&been&established):&&&&

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

&&&&Each&Ministry& Area& has& adopted& a& Governance& Document& (consistent&with& the&Constitution" of" the" Church" in"Wales)&which& broadly& divides& the& responsibility& for& the&work& of& the& Church& in& that& Area& to& three& corporate&bodies:&&Ministry& is&staffed&by&a&team,&known&as&the&Ministry!Team,& facilitated&by&a&Vicar&&and&Ministry&Team&Leader.&Teams& comprise& of& a& mixture& of& people:& clergy& (stipendiary& and& non& stipendiary),& lay& readers,& pastoral&eucharistic&assistants&and&others& licensed& for&public&ministry&by& the&Bishop&and&served&by&an&administrator.&They&meet& together& to&pray&and&orchestrate&ministry&across& the&area.&Most& teams&operate&a& system&of& ‘focal&ministers’,&where&team&members&have&specific&responsibility&for&a&particular&church&community.&&Praying&and&working& together& and& sharing& gifts& is,& however,& crucial& to& the& effectiveness& of& each& area.& The& Diocese& is&investing&heavily&in&the&development&of&teams.&"Mission&is&the&responsibility&of&the&Parochial!Church!Council&(as&it&is&now&according&to&the&Constitution"of"the"Church"in"Wales&Chapter&IV&C&III(3))&in&collaboration&with&the&Team.&&They&are,&however,&encouraged&to&be&far&more&proactive&in&mission.&It&is&hoped&that&larger&areas&will&enable&them&to&be&more&innovative&through&pooling&resources&for&particular&areas.&For&example,&in&a&Ministry&Area&consisting&of&seven&churches,&there&might&be&one&Sunday&School;&one&youth&group;&one&Exploring&Faith&group;&one&Foodbank;&one&Messy&Church;&one&Mothers’&Union&etc.&Each&Ministry&Area&in&the&Bangor&Synod&Area&testifies&to&the&way&in&which&the&new&‘United&PCC’&has&released&the&church&in&that&place&to&be&more&proactive&in&its&mission.&&Maintenance&in&the&Ministry&Area&is&largely&be&the&responsibility&of&the&Local!Church.&They&continue&to&provide&for& worship& to& their& local& community& as& well& as& looking& after& their& local& church& and& churchyard.& Finance&operates&mainly& on& this& level.& Each& church& retains& a& financial& independence,& although& there&may& be& a& small&payment&into&a&central&account&for&the&purposes&of&parochial&administration&and&mission&activity&as&agreed&by&the&respective&PCCs.&This&is&most&sensibly&organized&on&a&proportional&basis,&which&is&parallel&to&the&proportion&of&Ministry&Share&paid.&

The!Bangor!Synod!&&The&Bangor&Synod&is&the&United&Meeting&of&all&the&Ministry&Areas&which&meets&our&times&a&year&–&once&in&each&Ministry&Area.&It&exists&to&do&the&following:&&

&&&The&walled&town&of&Conwy&is&set&on&the&North&Wales&coast&about&fifteen&miles&from&the&city&of&Bangor,&and&five&miles& from& Llandudno.& Conwy& has& a& long& and& wonderful& history& and& the& thirteenth& century& castle& built& by&Edward&I&is&an&imposing&sight&as&you&cross&the&river&into&the&town&centre.&&The&town&walls&retain&three&of&the&original&gateways&and&can&be&walked&along&with&spectacular&views&of& the&harbour&and&a&backdrop&of&Conwy&Mountain.& & There& are& three& bridges& spanning& the& river& Conwy;& the& first& being& the& elegant& Thomas& Telford&suspension&bridge&built&in&1826&standing&proudly&alongside&the&castle.& &The&second&is&a&wrought&iron&tubular&railway&bridge,&built&by&Robert&Stephenson&in&1848,&and&the&third&is&the&modern&road&bridge,&built&in&1958&as&part&of&the&original&A55&route&into&North&Wales,&until&1991&when&the&opening&of&the&Conwy&tunnel&relieved&the&bottle&neck&of&traffic&through&the&town.&&&Conwy&county&covers&a& large&area&from&Llandudno&in&the&North&to&Pentrefoelas&and&Penmachno&in&the&South&and&Llanfairfechan& in& the&West& to&Towyn& in& the&East.&The&county&has&a&population&of&115,000,&which&almost&doubles&in&the&tourist&season.&The&town&of&Conwy&has&a&resident&population&of&4,065,&with&16%&under&sixteen&years&of&age&and&22%&being&over&the&age&of&sixty&five.&There&are&two&schools&in&the&town,&one&being&a&Church&in&Wales&voluntary&controlled&primary&school&with&254&pupils& from&aged&three&to&eleven,&and&a&comprehensive&secondary&school&with&893&pupils&aged&eleven&to&eighteen&years.&The&town&has&a&fire&station&and&an&unmanned&police&station&and&there&are&two&small&hospitals&close&by,&one&in&Llandudno&with&a&minor&injuries&unit.&The&two&main&regional&hospitals&are&located&in&Bangor&and&Bodelwyddan&and&are&both&within&easy&reach&either&by&car&or& public& transport.& The& Welsh& language& can& be& heard& in& many& areas& of& the& town& but& only& 20%& of& the&population&can&speak,&read&and&write&through&the&medium&of&Welsh&and&54%&have&no&Welsh&skills&at&all.&The&Welsh& language& is&promoted&within&schools&and&there&are&several&Welsh& language&courses&held& locally.&Road&links& are& good& via& the& A55& with& Chester& being& approximately& 45& minutes,& Liverpool& 90& minutes& and&Manchester& airport& 80&minutes& away.&There& are& also& good&public& transport& links&by&both&bus& and& train& and&Conwy&has&its&own&small&train&station.&The&port&of&Holyhead&with&ferries&to&Ireland&is&about&40&miles&away.&&&&&&

&&&The&town&is&a&bustling&place&in&the&summer&months&and&boasts&an&array&of&shops&offering&both&interesting&gifts&for& tourists& as& well& as& an& award&winning& butcher,& a& post& office,& bakeries,& greengrocers,& florists& and& a& Spar.&&There&is&also&a&local&newsagent&and&general&store&which&has&served&the&community&for&generations.&&Within&a&five&mile&radius&there&are&the&larger&supermarkets&such&as&Asda&and&Tesco&as&well&as&a&large&selection&of&stores&and& superstores& for& everything& from& clothes& to& household& appliances.& For& recreation& and& entertainment,&Conwy&golf&course&is&one&of&the&finest&in&North&Wales&and&hosts&some&major&competitions.&Its&setting&on&Conwy&Morfa&overlooks&the&sand&dunes&and&beach,&which&serve&both&the&local&community&and&tourists&alike.&The&busy&marina&is&home&to&over&500&vessels&and&offers&various&water&activities&and&the&local&bowling&green&is&a&hub&of&activity&with& friendly&competitions.&There& is&a&cinema& just&over&the&bridge& in&Llandudno&Junction,&and&Venue&Cymru,&one&of&the&top&rated&theatres&in&Wales,&shows&excellent&productions&in&Llandudno.&&&&Tourism& is& now& the& main& form& of& employment& within& the& town.& A&wealth&of& cafes& and& restaurants& along&with& several&public&houses,& a&Royal&British&Legion&and&a&cruising&club&await&visitors&and&those&who&wish&to&stay&longer&are&welcomed&in&guest&houses&and&hotels&within&Conwy& and& in& the& surrounding& area.& The& town& has& many& other&attractions& besides& the& castle& and& town& walls& for& visitors& to& enjoy.&&&&&&&&&In&addition&to&the&Parish&Church&at&the&centre&of&the&town,&there&is&the&Elizabethan& town& house,& Plas& Mawr,& Aberconwy& House,& which& is& a&fourteenth& century& merchant’s& house,& and& Britain’s& smallest& house&on& the& quayside.& Further& afield& there& is& the& seaside& town& of&Llandudno&with&all&it&has&to&offer&and&beautiful&Betws&y&Coed&and&the&stunning&Swallow&Falls& just&up& the&valley.& &Being&on& the&edge&of& the&Snowdonia& National& Park& we& are& not& too& far& from& Wales’& highest&mountain& –& Snowdon.& In& addition& to& tourism,& Bodlondeb,& the&administrative&centre&of&Conwy&Borough&Council,&on&the&west&side&of&the&town,&is&a&significant&employer&in&the&Parish.&&

&&&The&quayside&hosts&many&events&such&as&the&annual&Conwy&Food&Festival,&Celtic&fairs,&pirate&days&and&the&River&Festival.&&The&fishing&industry&in&Conwy&has&declined&over&the&years&and,&although&there&are&no&longer&any&large&fishing& vessels& netting&wet& fish,& there& are& several& smaller& boats& still& fishing&out& of& the& town&with& traditional&fishing&skills&being&passed&on&from&generation&to&generation.& &The&mussel&industry&continues,&and&Conwy&has&its&own&mussel&purification&plant&supplying&local&restaurants&during&the&season.&There&is&also&the&RNLI&inshore&lifeboat&manned&by&local&volunteers,&which&can&be&extremely&busy&during&the&summer&months.&The&incumbent&traditionally&has&been&the&RNLI&Padre.&&Conwy& is& a& real& community& with& some&families& going& back& many& generations& and&often& joined& by&marriage.& & People& who& are&born& within& the& town& walls& are& known& as&Jackdaws&and,&although&not&many&babies&are&born& at& home& these& days,& this& tradition&continues.& The& community& spirit& continues&through& our& church& life& and& the& work& of&Cytun& brings& all& Christian& denominations&together& for& a& joint& monthly& service.& The&town& has& an& active& library,& and& many&community&groups&and&clubs,& including& the&Historical& Society,& Camera& Club& and& the&Horticultural& Society.& For& the&more&mature&members&of&the&town,&there&is&Clwb&yr&Efail,&and&for&younger&members&of&the&community&we& have& a& range& of& clubs& including&Crusaders,&Brownies,&Guides,&Cubs&&&Scouts.&&&&

6.&The&Abbey&and&Parish&Church&of&St&Mary&&&All&Saints,&Conwy&&

&&&The&Church&of&St.&Mary&and&All&Saints& is& the&Parish&Church&and&a&Grade&1& listed&building.& It& is&situated& in&the&centre& of& Conwy,& with& road& entrances& from& Church& Street& to& the& west& and& Castle& Street& to& the& east,& plus&footpath&entrances&north&and&south.&&&There&are&also&entrances&to&the&Vicarage&and&the&Church&Hall.&The&walled&churchyard&is&closed&for&burials&but&is&a&large&green&space&in&the&centre&of&Conwy.&It’s&tranquillity&is&appreciated&by&many&and&it&is&used&as&a&useful&shortWcut&from&one&side&of&the&town&to&the&other.&In&addition&to&the&church&it&contains&an&old&stone&sexton’s&hut&and&the&church&oil&tank.&&The&Church&was&founded&in&honour&of&the&Blessed&Virgin&Mary&and&All&Saints,&and&was&originally&the&Cistercian&Abbey&of&Aberconwy&whose& foundations&were&marked&out& in&1172&AD.& & &Completed& in&1186,& the&Abbey&was&formally& incorporated& into& the& Cistercian& Order.& Llewelyn& Fawr& (the& Great)& granted& the& Abbey& a& charter&continuing& the&gifts&and&privileges&he&had&bestowed&upon& it& in&1198.& It&was&a&depository& for&Welsh&national&records&with&a&renowned&library&and&a&mausoleum&for&native&princes;&among&these&were&Gruffydd&ap&Cynan,&Llewelyn&ap&Maelgwn&and&Llewelyn&Fawr&and&his&sons&Dafydd&and&Gruffydd.&&&Llewelyn&Fawr’s&body,&buried&in&1240,& was& removed& later& to& Maenan,& and& thence& to& Llanrwst& Church,& where& the& coffin& is& still& to& be& seen.&&&&&&&&&&&&&&In&1245&an&army,&stationed&at&Deganwy&under&Henry&III,&angered&by&the&plundering&of&a&supply&ship&which&had&gone&aground,&ransacked&the&Abbey,&removing&chalices&and&books,&and&burned&the&buildings&belonging&to&it.&&In&1283&Edward&I&removed&the&Abbey&to&Maenan,&a&few&miles&up&the&Conwy&valley,&and&St.Mary’s&became&the&Parish&Church.& &The&East&and&West&end&buttresses&and&parts&of& the&walls,&notably&on& the&North&side,& survive&from&the&original&12thC&Abbey&Church.&&The&lower&stages&of&the&tower,&the&South&transept&and&the&porches&were&erected& in& the&14thC&when&the&room&North&of& the&tower&was&enclosed&as&a&charnel&house.& & & In& the&15thC&the&tower&was&completed,&the&rood&screen&set&up&and&the&font&installed.&&&The&aisle&roofs&were&raised&in&the&16thC&and&the&nave&roof& in&1872.& &At&the&latter&date&the&chancel&floor&was&raised,&the&South&window&of&the&transept&reconstructed&and&the&clerestory&windows&reWset&at&their&present&level.&The&&clock&in&the&tower,&with&its&slate&&&

&&&&faces,&was&the&gift&of&Lord&Penrhyn&to&the&town&in&the&19th&century.&& &In&1921,&in&the&north&aisle&of&the&church,&the&Memorial&Chapel&was&erected&and,&in&1926,&the&Vestry&enlarged.&&A&bookstore&at&the&rear&of&the&church&was&constructed&in&1939.&It& is&an&excellent&example&of&modern&work&in&oak,&as&are&the&altar&rails,&made&by&Robert&Thompson&of&Kilburn,&set&up&in&1960.&In&1949&the&charnel&house&was&rearranged&to&serve&as&the&Parish&Room.&

The& Parish& Registers& date& back& to& 1541.& The&Church& contains& very& interesting& monuments,&windows& and& fittings,& including& ancient& floor&tiles&now&set&in&the&South&wall&of&the&Sanctuary,&carved&heads& in&stone,&bookboards&in&the&choir&with& poppy& heads& and& holy& water& stoups.& & A&medieval&processional&cross&and&other&artefacts&are&kept& in&the&Parish&Room&at& the&back&of& the&church.&&The&rood&screen,&considered&one&of&the&finest& in& North& Wales,& represents& 15thC&craftsmanship&at& its&best.&The&early&Tudor&font&is&unique&in&this&area.& It&has&a&heavily&moulded&octagonal& base& and& the& panels& of& the& pedestal&and& bowl& are& moulded& and& decorated& with&tracery.& & & The& steps& on& which& it& is& mounted&were& probably& the& base& of& a& village& cross.& The&church& is& heated& by& oil,& a& twin& boiler& system&replacing& the& old& boiler& just& three& years& ago.&The& boiler& house& is& underneath& the& North&porch.& The& church& was& rewired& and& a& new&sound&/&hearing&loop&system&installed&in&2003.&&&

&&The&Church&Hall&is&a&separate&19th&century&building&which&was&formerly&a&school.&It&fronts&onto&Rosehill&Street,&but&has&a&rear&connection&via&a&wooden&stairway&into&the&churchyard.&It&now&consists&of&one&large&room&with&doors&at&each&end,&plus&a&kitchen&and&a&smaller& rear& room.& & &The& large&room&has&wooden& floorboards&and& is&heated&by&gas,&while&the&smaller&room&is&carpeted&and&is&heated&electrically.&&&The&kitchen&is&modern&with&builtWin&cupboards,&a&cooker&and&a&fridge.&There&are&also&separate&Ladies,&Gents&and&Disabled&toilets.&&&Two&years&ago&the&building&was&renovated&with&repairs&to&the&roof,&landscaping&to&the&front,&removal&of&a&storage&building&at&the&rear,&complete&redecoration&inside&and&out,&and&creation&of&the&new&link&to&the&church&at&the&rear.&&The&Hall&is&managed&by&a&subWcommittee&of&the&PCC.&In&addition&to&use&by&the&churches&it&is&let&out&to&various&groups.&&&

!&St&Agnes&Cemetery&lies&on&the&St.&Agnes&road&just&outside&the&town&walls.&It&once&contained&a&tin&chapel,&now&demolished.&This& large&cemetery&now&comes&under& the&responsibility&of&St.&Mary’s&PCC.&There& is&an&adjacent&municipal& cemetery&which& is& used& for& access& to& the& church& cemetery.& & & The& cemetery& is& now& closed& to& new&burials,&but&re&opening&burials&still&take&place.&However&a&plot&for&new&cremation&remains&is&still&open.&

Worship!at!St.!Mary’s!&The&pattern&of&Sunday&services&at&St.&Mary’s,&which&are&all&at&11am,&is&as&follows:&&First&Sunday&of& the&month&–&Family&Service.&This& is& the&most& informal&of&our&Sunday&services,& and& follows&a&form&devised&by&our&previous&incumbent&which&is&printed&on&a&card&handWout.&An&informal&talk&is&given&instead&of&a&sermon,&often&with&the&participation&of&the&younger&members&of&the&congregation.&Hymns&are&chosen&from&‘Complete&Mission&Praise’&(2005);&of&the&six,&three&are&accompanied&by&organ&and&three&by&a&music&group&of&up&to&ten&players.&The&Junior&Choir&usually&contributes&an&anthem&or&worship&song,&and&the&lesson&is&read&by&one&of&the&teenage&members&of&the&congregation.&Over&the&past&year&the&average&adult&attendance&at&family&services&has&been&63,&and&children&12.&&Second,& third& and& fourth& Sundays& –& Holy& Communion.& On& the& second& and& fourth& Sundays& of& the& month,&communion& is&celebrated&according& to& the&1984&Rite,&with& the&gradual&psalm&sung&to&Anglican&chant.&On&the&third&Sunday&of& the&month& the&2004&Rite& is&used,&with&a&gradual&hymn&replacing& the&psalm.&At&present,& two&settings&of&the&Communion&Service&are&in&use;&White&in&Eb&and&David&Thorne’s&‘Mass&of&St.&Thomas’.&Alleluia&is&sung&before&the&reading&of&the&Gospel&except&in&Advent&and&Lent.&&The&sermon&is&seen&as&an&important&part&of&the&service,&given&from&the&pulpit,&where&through&the&ministry&of&our&previous&incumbent&St.&Mary’s&has&been&used&to&a&high&standard&of&preaching&in&which&Biblical&passages&are&expounded&and&where&the&congregation&is&both&spiritually&fed&and&challenged.&&&The& choir& usually& sings& appropriate& hymns& or& anthems& during& communion& and& is& augmented& about& once& a&month&in&order&to&contribute&a&more&substantial&anthem&to&the&liturgy.&The&style&of&worship&at&these&services&is&dignified& and& fairly& formal,&without& being& ‘stuffy’.& Average& attendance& at& communion& services& over& the& past&year&has&been&59&adults&and&10&children.&The&ministering&priest&wears&cassock,&surplice&and&stole;&we&have&no&Eucharistic&vestments&at&St.&Mary’s.&Members&of&the&congregation&read&the&Old&Testament&lesson&and&Epistle,&with&the&present&Lay&Reader,&serving&at&the&Altar&and&supporting&the&priest&by&administering&the&Chalice.&Our&Lay&Reader&takes&occasional&services&in&both&St.&Mary's&and&St.&Benedict's&and&in&the&weekly&services&leads&in&intercessory&prayer,&apart&from&once&a&month&when&a&member&of&the&congregation&takes&over&this&important&task.&&Fifth&Sunday&of&the&month&–&Matins.&Official&duties&are&often&shared&between&the&incumbent&and&Lay&&Reader.&Often&our&Lay&Reader&officiates& leaving& the& incumbent& just& to&preach.&Occasionally& it&happens& the&other&way&round!& It&has&been&our&practice& in&recent&years& to&omit&one&of& the&Canticles,&and&to&say,&rather&than&sing,& the&versicles&and&responses.&Both&the&psalm&and&the&chosen&Canticle&are&sung&to&Anglican&chant.&The&average&adult&attendance&at&Matins&over&the&past&year&has&been&55.&At&this&service,&as&at&the&family&service,&the&Priest&wears&cassock,&surplice,&hood&and&scarf.&&Apart&from&the&first&Sunday&in&the&month,&hymns&are&chosen&from&‘Common&Praise’,&the&2000&edition&of&Hymns&Ancient&and&Modern.&&The&morning&services&in&St.&Mary’s&are&usually&conducted&entirely&in&English.&At&present&there&are&no&Welsh&services&at&St.&Mary’s,&but&a&number&of&worshippers&are&Welsh&speakers&and&the&new&PriestWinWcharge&might&wish&to&explore&introducing&an&element&of&bilingualism&into&the&11am&Sunday&service.&&The& Sunday& pattern& varies& occasionally.& On& Remembrance& Sunday,& a& short& service& takes& place& at& the& War&Memorial&at&Bodlondeb,&starting&just&before&11am.&A&prayer&and&the&two&minute&silence&is&also&&offered&at&the&church& led& by& our& Lay& Reader.& From& Bodlondeb& members& of& the& British& Legion& and& other& uniformed&organisations& then&march& to& church& for& a& service& which& starts& at& approximately& 11.30am.& The& parish& carol&service&has&usually&taken&place&at&11am&on&the&Sunday&before&Christmas,&and&a&Festival&Choral&Evensong&opens&the& annual& Classical& Music& Festival& at& 4pm& on& the& third& Sunday& of& July& (this& is& in& addition& to& the& morning&service).&&Weekday&services:&on&Wednesdays&there&is&a&said&communion&service&at&11am&with&an&average&congregation&of&15.&Over&the&past&three&years&attendances&at&Christmas&and&Easter&have&been&as&follows:&&&& 2011& 2012& 2013& 2014&Christmas&Day& 92&(20&children)& 54&(18&children)& 75&(9&children)& &Easter&Day& 130&(27&children)& 130&(27&children)& 104&(12&children)& 110&(25&children)&Av&Sun&Attendance& & & & &&

&&&&St.&Mary’s& has& a& strong& choral& and&musical& tradition&which& has& been& nurtured& for& the& past& 38& years& by& the&present&Organist&and&Choirmaster,&who&is&a&professional&musician.&He&began&playing&the&organ&at&St.&Mary’s&at&the&age&of&14,&and&was&previously&a&chorister&at&the&church.&He,&and&the&church&as&a&whole,&is&fortunate&to&have&the&help&and&support&of&a&core&number&of&very&loyal&and&hard&working&choristers&who&do&much&to&ensure&the&smoothWrunning&of&the&(robed)&choir.&There&is&a&happy&spirit&of&cooperation&amongst&choristers&and&a&desire&to&give&of&our&best&in&the&worship&of&&God&and&our&Lord&Jesus&Christ.&The&choir&is&competent&to&sing&much&of&the&core& Anglican& repertoire,& and& on& occasions& such& as& the& Festival& Evensong& combines& with& other& singers& to&perform& more& demanding& music& in& up& to& eight& parts.& We& occasionally& commission& new& music,& and& have&recently& asked& John& Hosking& to& compose& a& new& carol& setting& for& this& year’s& Carol& Service.& The& organ& itself,&although&rather&small&for&the&size&of&the&building,&is&of&good&quality,&regularly&tuned&and&well&maintained.&&The& Junior& Choir&meets& to& rehearse& on&Wednesdays& at& 6pm& in& the& Church&Hall.& At& present& there& are& seven&members,&as&a&number&have&progressed&to&the&Senior&Choir.&A&recruitment&drive&will&begin&in&September&with&the&aim&of& increasing&membership.&The&Junior&Choir&follows&the&RSCM&‘Voice&for&Life’&programme,&and&at&the&end&of&2013&two&members&gained&their&Silver&Award&with&distinction&and&merit&respectively,&and&one&member&gained&the&Bronze&Award.&The&Choirmaster&is&ably&assisted&at&Junior&Choir&rehearsals&by&two&adult&members&of&the&choir;&all&three&have&been&CRB&checked.&Senior&Choir&practice&follows&at&7pm,&usually&in&church,&and&lasts&approximately& 1&¼& hours.& At& present& the& Senior& Choir& numbers& 9& sopranos,& 5& altos,& 2& tenors& and& 3& basses,&although& up& to& eight& others& join& us& at& festivals& and& on& the& Sundays& on& which& more& ambitious& music& is&performed.&The&music&group&which&accompanies&some&of&the&hymns&at&the&family&service&is&mostly&made&up&of&schoolWaged&musicians&who&play&a& range&of& instruments& including& flute,& recorder,& clarinet,& violin,& cornet&and&electric& drum& kit,& with& the& piano& as& backbone& of& the& group.& The& Organist& who& played& at&Welsh& services& is&available&to&deputise,&and&usually&plays&for&funeral&services&during&term&time.&&

There&is&a&long&tradition&of&concerts&at&the&church,&stretching&back&to&1981&when&an&annual&summer&series&of&lunchtime&concerts&was&inaugurated.&To&mark&25&years&of&concerts,&a&festival&was&held&in&2005&which&was&wellWreceived& and& has& become& an& eagerly& awaited& annual& event.& At& the& 2014& festival,& 16& concerts& and& related&activities&took&place&within&a&period&of&seven&days.&In&2012&a&brand&new&7ft&Kawai&grand&piano&was&installed&in&the&church&to&replace&the&old&instrument.&This&was&purchased&with&funds&raised&by&supporters&of&the&festival&in&little&over&a&year,&for&the&use&both&of&the&festival&and&of&the&church.&The&festival&is&directed&by&the&Organist,&with&the&majority&of& the& festival&personnel&being&drawn& from&the&congregation.&The& festival& is& seen&by& those&who&organise&it&as&one&of&the&church’s&contributions&to&the&community&of&Conwy.&Room&exists&to&develop&the&festival&further&as&a&means&of& interacting&with&the&community,&and&of&drawing&people& into&the& life&of&the&church.&The&festival&is&entirely&selfWfunding&and&financially&independent&from&the&church.&&!!Church!Events!and!Activities.!!The&church&members&operate&and&organise&a&wide&variety&of&events&and&activities&throughout&the&year,&some&developing&and&extending&Christian&witness&and&ministry,&and&others&for&fellowship&and&fund&raising.&Members&from&both&churches&usually&participate&together,&except&for&any&events&specifically&using&the&respective&church&buildings.& Activities& take& place& in& the& church& building,& the& church& hall& which& is& adjacent,& and& in& members&homes.&&&Activities&extending&our&Christian&witness&and&ministry&are&as&follows.&Over&the&years&we&have&run&a&St.&Mary's&Sunday&School,&meeting&during&the&11.00&service&each&week&[except&the&first&Sunday&in&the&month&which&is&the&family&service.]&The&Sunday&School&meets&in&the&Church&Hall,&and&joins&the&main&service&for&Communion.&&Each&year& the& Sunday& School& hold& a& fund& raising& event& at&Harvest&Time& choosing& a&different& charity& and& theming&their&appeal.&We&have&been&very&pleased&recently&to&see&our&older&children&confirmed,&but&the&sad&part&of&this&event&has&been&for&the&moment&this&has&left&an&insufficient&number&of&younger&children&of&regular&attendance,&and& the&Sunday&School&has&had& to&go& into&abeyance.&We&are&hoping& to&attract&more& families& into& the& church&before&too&long,&and&as&this&happens&the&Sunday&school&will&start&up&again.&Our&Church&is&very&much&a&family,&and& each& month& after& the& family& service,& coffee& and& refreshments& are& served& which& gives& everyone& the&opportunity&to&meet&new&people,&get&to&know&each&other&better&and&to&share&any&concerns.&&&An&important&part&of&the&teaching&ministry&of&the&Church&has&been&the&weekly&Bible&Study&held&by&our&previous&incumbent&at&the&Vicarage.&We&would&want&to&continue&with&this,&either&in&a&similar&form&or&as&House&Groups.&There& is&both&a&weekly&Men's&Fellowship&and&Women's&Fellowship.&The&men&meet& in&a&member's&home&on&a&Tuesday&morning&for&fellowship&and&discussion.&The&women&meet&at&the&Vicarage&also&on&Tuesday&morning&for&fellowship& and& prayer.& Prayer& is& focussed& for& friends& and& relatives,& members& of& the& Church,& national& and&international&concerns,&and&for&the&town&of&Conwy,&street&by&street.&&&Conwy&town&has&an&annual&food&festival&in&October,&and&the&Church&participates&in&this&by&opening&the&church&for&the&whole&of&Saturday&and&Sunday&afternoon.&We&offer&free&light&refreshments&and&a&place&of&quiet&where&visitors&can&sit&and&eat&their&own&food&if&they&wish.&We&also&provide&live&organ,&piano&and&harp&music&during&the&day.&We&have&stewards&in&the&background&and&information&panels&to&tell&people&about&the&history&of&the&church,&and&more&importantly,&about&our&the&Christian&Faith.&&&Our& fellowship&and& fund& raising&events&are&many&and&varied.&The&main& fund& raising&event&of& the&year& is& the&Annual&Gift&Day&at&which&people&are&very&generous.&Throughout&the&year&we&have&occasional&&“bring&and&share”&lunches&in&the&church&hall&after&the&Sunday&service,&as&well&as&hosting&the&Christian&Aid&annual&“Frugal”&Lunch.&We& also& hold& an& annual&Harvest& Supper& followed&by&home& grown& entertainment.& The&Church&Hall& is& ideally&positioned& opposite& the&main& car& park& for& the& castle& and& so&we& organise& occasional& coffee&mornings& selling&produce&and&preserves,&lunches&and&afternoon&teas&for&tourists&as&well&as&locals&to&enjoy.&&Finance.!

The&Parish&Share&for&St.&Mary’s&Church&for&2014&is&£36,302.00.&St.&Mary’s&has&a&very&good&record&of&meeting&its&Parish&Share&commitment&in&full,&albeit&with&a&struggle&in&recent&years!&&We&have&been&helped&by&the&slowing&in&the& rate& of& increase& in& the& amount& of& Parish& Share& due,& and& indeed,& this& year,&were& grateful& that&we& saw& a&decrease& in& the& amount& we& were& expected& to& find.& The& Parish& Share& is& by& far& the& largest& portion& of& our&expenditure,& being& approximately& 75%& of& our& total& ordinary& expenditure,& followed& in& second& place& by&Maintenance&of&the&Church&building&(heating,&lighting,&insurance,&water&rates&etc.).&

&&The& Parish& of& Gyffin& is& situated& approximately& half& a& mile& from& the& town& of& Conwy.& The& parish& boundary&follows&the&Gyffin&stream&southwards&but&to&what&point&is&not&clear,&nor&how&it&crosses&west&to&east&to&reach&the&River&Conwy&which&is&the&boundary&northwards&back&to&Conwy.&Gyffin&is&a&mainly&rural&area&with&the&village&made& up& of& one& longish& street:& Llanrwst& Road& –& the& Woodlands& (B5106)& which& commences& just& past& the&bowling&green&and&eventually&meets&the&Henryd&Road&and&Mill&Hill&before&continuing&left&up&the&hill&again&as&the& Llanrwst& Road.& This& crossroads& forms& the& village& centre&with& the& village& shop& on& the& right,& the& old& toll&house&on&the&left&and&the&hairdressers&facing&them&on&the&opposite&corner.&&Gyffin&was&the&birthplace&of&Dr&Richard&Davies,&born&in&1501&(the&son&of&the&curate&of&Gyffin)&in&the&old&PlasWyWPerson.&He&was& educated& at&New& Inn&Hall,& Oxford.&He& became&Bishop& of& St& Asaph& in& 1559& and&Bishop& of& St&Davids&in&1561.&He&was&one&of&the&translators&of&part&of&the&New&Testament&and&some&of&the&Psalms&into&Welsh.&Gyffin&was&also&the&birthplace&of&the&renowned&sculptor&John&Gibson.&&Opposite&the&church&is&the&Gyffin&Community&Centre&which&is&now&owned&by&the&Council.&It&can&be&used&by&the&church&free&of&charge&for&four&times&a&year.&At&present&it&is&not&used&very&much&as&the&groups&which&used&to&use&the&hall&did&not&want&to&be&involved&with&its&management.&The&council&seem&eager&to&be&relieved&of&the&building&and&the&feeling&is&that&it&may&eventually&be&put&up&for&sale.&&Other&than&the&church&and&community&centre,&Gyffin&has&no&communal&meeting&place&and&no&cafes,&so&most&of&the&socialising&takes&place&in&Conwy&and&we&feel&as&much&part&of&Conwy&as&we&do&of&Gyffin.&&&The&residents&of&Gyffin&are&included&in&the&population&statistics&for&Conwy.&It&is&estimated,&however,&that&there&are& approximately&435&dwellings& in& the&village.& In& addition& to& the&Woodlands,& there& are& three&main&housing&estates&(Bryn&Castell,&Bryn&Tirion&Park&and&Maes&y&Llan)&together&with&a&few&small&groups&of&houses&and&some&scattered&single&dwellings&and& farms.&There& is& also&a&popular&doctor’s& surgery&and& three&guest&houses&along&with&some&holiday&apartments.&There&is&a&good&mix&of&age&groups&in&the&parish.&Most&people&are&employed&in&the&public&sector,&service&industries,&retail,&caring&professions,&tourism&and&farming.&&

&The&church&lies&a&few&yards&along&the&Henryd&Road&on&the&right&and&is&hidden&from&view&down&the&church&path&by&the&ancient&yew&trees&and&one&huge&cypress&tree.&&

&It&is&likely&that&there&was&a&place&of&Christian&worship&in&Gyffin&long&before&any&part&of&the&present&building&was&erected.& The& evidence& for& this& is& the& shape& and& situation& of& the& churchyard,& which& was& originally& circular,&denoting&a&celtic&origin,&and&on& the&bank&of&a& stream&near& to&but&out&of& sight&of& the&sea.&The&original& church&would& probably& have& been& dedicated& to& a& Welsh& saint,& perhapa& a& contemporary& of& Celynin& or& Tudno.& The&earliest&part&of&the&present&small&TWshaped&building&is&the&12th&century&eastern&half&of&the&nave.&The&church’s&grade& 1& status& is,& however,& due& to& the& unusual& canopy& of& honour& over& the& sanctuary&with& painted&wooden&panels&of& the& four&evangelists&along&with&various&saints,&which&dates& from&the&15th&century.&The&panels&were&expertly&conserved&in&1992&(the&deterioration&being&due&in&part&to&the&improved&heating&system&drying&out&the&paint).&Bishop&Richard&Davies,&one&of&the&16th&century&translators&of&the&Bible&and&Prayer&Book&into&Welsh,&was&born&in&the&parish&and&baptised&in&the&font.&&The&church&building&was&given&a&clean&bill&of&health&at&the&last&Quinquennial&Inspection&in&2013&and&in&January&2014&we&changed&our&heating&from&oil&to&gas&as&our&oil&supplier&had&advised&us&that&the&oil&storage&tank&and&supply&were&in&poor&condition.&A&loop&system&was&installed&a&few&years&ago&when&it&was&felt&that&the&size&of&the&church&did&not&justify&sound&amplification&as&well.&There&is&a&small&clergy&vestry&and&a&sink&and&double&drainer&in&the&‘choir&vestry’&with&a&cold&tap,&a&kettle&and&an&urn&for&hot&water.&So&far&as&the&church&plant&is&concerned,&it&is&highly&desirable&that&a&discreet&and&accessible&toilet&be&installed&in&the&near&future,&particularly&now&that&the&facilities& at& the& former& church&hall& are& no& longer& available.& The& graveyard,& and& all& legible& inscriptions,&were&recorded&some&years&ago&by&the&Gwynedd&Family&History&Society.&&The&building&suffers&from&periodic&petty&vandalism&due&to&its&secluded&position&in&the&village.&Local&youths&like&to&gather&in&the&churchyard&or&porch&to&eat,&drink,&smoke&and&use&drugs.&Regretfully&we&felt&obliged&to&fit&metal&gates&to&the&porch&when&burning&paper&was&being&thrust&under&the&ancient&wooden&door&–&more&recently&the&

slats&forming&the&open&side&of&the&porch&have&been&broken&to&allow&access,&by&passing&the&locked&metal&gates.&Windows&have&also&been&damaged&by&gravel&or&airgun&pellets.& It&would&be&good& to&make&some&contact&with&these&youngsters&and&help&them&make&better&use&of&their&time&and&ingenuity.&&The&parish&had&the&use&of&a&church&hall&designed&as&a&church&school&by&Herbert&North.&This&was&sold&to&the&local&council&as&a&community&centre&in&the&1970s.&PCC&meetings&are&now&held&in&church&and&social&events&are&usually&held&jointly&with&St&Mary’s&in&Conwy.&The&regular&income&from&the&proceeds&of&sale&held&by&the&Representative&Body&of&the&Church&in&Wales&has&been&most&useful.&&Seating&capacity&in&the&nave&is&between&56&and&76&depending&on&whether&each&pew&takes&2&comfortably&or&3&more&cosily.&The&transepts&can&together&take&up&to&100&more&at&a&pinch&plus&10&in&the&choir&stalls,&made&by&the&‘mouse&man’&of&Yorkshire&in&the&1960s.&&Worship!&Our&main&Sunday&service&is&at&0930hr&each&week&although&the&nature&of&the&worship&varies.&On&the&first&Sunday&of&the&month,&an&English&Prayer&Book&(1984)&Eucharist&is&celebrated&with&vestments&at&the&east&facing&altar.&On&the&second&Sunday,&Matins&is&said&(followed&by&fairtrade&tea&and&coffee).&On&the&third&Sunday&of&the&month,&a&biWlingual& Prayer& Book& (1984)& Eucharist& is& celebrated;& and& on& the& fourth& Sunday,& the& Eucharist& is& celebrated&according&to&the&2004&rite.&&There&are&two&evening&services&a&month&at&1800hr.&Normally&there&is&a&small&(about&6)&congregation&for&a&Welsh&language&Eucharist&at&1800hr&on&the&first&Sunday&(this&has&been&suspended&during&the& interregnum& with& some& Welsh& inserted& into& the& morning& Eucharist).& On& the& third& Sunday& there& is& an&English&language&Evensong&(about&6W10&people).&There&is&a&celebration&of&the&Eucharist&at&2330hr&on&Christmas&Eve&and&at&1930hr&on&Ash&Wednesday&and&Maundy&Thursday&(for&people&from&both&parishes).&In&some&years&the&lent&course&has&been&held&at&St&Benedict’s&Church&(otherwise&it&is&held&in&St&Mary’s&Church&or&Church&Hall).&For&many&years&Conwy&Cytun&has&held&a&short&(about&half&an&hour)&service&on&the&first&Tuesday&of&each&month&at&1900hr,&hosted&by&each&denomination&in&turn&–&the&Anglican&turn&is&usually&at&St&Benedicts&(being&easier&to&heat&than&St&Mary’s).&A&united&service&is&also&held&on&the&Sunday&afternoon&of&the&Week&of&Prayer&for&Christian&Unity&in&January&and&a&frugal&&lunch&is&usually&organised&in&St&Mary’s&Church&Hall&on&the&Sunday&in&Christian&Aid&week,&supported&by&all&the&(English&speaking)&churches.&&&Numbers&on&the&electoral&roll&were&27&in&2014&and&the&regular&attenders&are&friendly&and&welcoming,&mostly&elderly&and&female,&and&ready&to&help&if&asked.&We&have&no&young&people&worshipping&with&us&week&by&week&,&but&members’&children&sometimes&contribute& their&skills&and&advice.&The&number&of&Welsh&speakers& is&small&but&faithful&and&we&are&anxious&to&retain&at&least&the&present&level&of&Welsh&services.&&We&have&two&wardens,&a&Treasurer&and&a&PCC&secretary,&also&an&organist&(plus&a&few&reserves)&and&a&sacristan.&We&now&emply&a& contractor& to&keep& the&grass& cut&during& the& season&and& receive&a& grant& from&Conwy&Town&Council& towards& the& cost& of& this.& In& addition& to& the& officers& there& are& 11&members& on& the& Parochial& Church&Council.&We&have&rotas&for&sidesmen,&readers,&intercession&leaders&(once&a&month),&flowers&and&cleaning.&&&Several&years&ago,&the&parish&adopted&the&following&mission&statement:&&“We&are&a&fellowship&of&Christian&believers,&professing&the&Christian&Faith&as&revealed&in&Holy&Scripture,&as&the&Church&in&Wales&has&received&it.&Who&worship&God&through&Jesus&Christ,&seek&to&draw&others&to&faith&in&Him,&and& to& grow& in& grace& and& holiness.&We& aim& to& serve& each& other& and& the&wider& community& in&matters& both&practical&and&spiritual”.&&&&&&&&&&&&

Parish!Community!Life!and!Organisations!!There&is&a&lively&social&and&community&life&in&our&parish,&much&is&jointly&carried&out&with&St&Mary’s&Church.&&On&Tuesday&mornings&there&are&separate&men’s&and&women’s&fellowships;&the&men’s&fellowship&is&devoted&to&bible&study,&prayer&and&social&time,&while&the&women’s&fellowship&focus&maily&on&prayer&for&our&parish&and&our&local&community.&&On&Thursday&evenings&there&is&an&excellently&attended&joint&parish&bible&study&which&has&been&conducted&by&the&incumbent.&&Social!Activities!&Many& of& these& take& place,& again,& largely& as& joint& undertakings,& following& an& annual& pattern& as& follows:& Lent&courses& of& five& weeks’& duration& held& alternatively& in& St& Benedict’s& church& and& St& Mary’s& church& hall.& St&Benedict’s& congregation&decorates& the&church& for&Easter,&Harvest&Festival&and&Christmas&which&affords,&with&refreshment,& an& opportunity& for& socialising.& In& July& there& is& a& popular& (and& widely& regarded& by& the& local&community)&classical&music&festival&held&at&St&Mary’s&church.&The&opening&choral&evensong&takes&place&on&the&Sunday& preceding& the& concerts,& in& which& is& there& is& participation& by& members& of& St& Benedict’s& church& and&choristers&from&elsewhere.&A&‘parish&pantry’&jointly&held&by&both&churches&has&provided&further&oportunities&to&socialise&and&work&together.&The&concert&goers&always&enjoy&the&food&provided.&Occasionally&a&summer&fair&has&been& set& up& as& a& fundraising& effort.& & September& sees& the& official& ‘open& doors’&weekend&when& the& public& are&encouraged& to& view& historic& buildings& in& the& surrounding& towns.& St& Benedict’s& are& keen& participants& in& this&event&with&stewards&on&hand&on&a&rota&basis& to&explain&the&history&of& this&ancient&church.&Refreshments&and&quiet,&reflective&organ&playing&are&much&appreciated&by&those&who&attend.&&&Frugal& lunches&are&held&as&a& fundraising&event&with&members&of& local&Cytun&churches&in&the&area.& In&October&when& the& very& popular& Conwy& Feast& is& organised,& St& Mary’s& chuch& is& open& offering& quiet& and& outreach&opportunity&to&members&of&the&public.&St&Benedict’s&members&assist&by&providing&extra&stewards&on&the&day.&&Other&fundraising&efforts&such&as&summer&and&autumn&fairs&are&held&with&coffee&mornings&and&afternoon&teas&at&sporadic&times&throughout&the&year.&&&&The& main& fundraiser,& however,& is& the& annual& gift& day& held& in& early& December.& Both& churches& take& part&individually&in&this.&&On&the&second&Sunday&of&the&month&after&Morning&Prayer&refreshments&are&enjoyed&by&the&congregation,&thus&providing&a&further&time&of&social&contact.&&Work!with!other!churches!and!ecumenial!links.!!There&exist&very&warm&and&friendly&relations&with&neighbouring&churches.&On&the&first&Tuesday&evening&of&each&month,& a& Cytun&Worship& Service& is& held,& each& church& taking& it& in& turns& to& host& the& event.& In& Unity&Week& in&January&a&joint&worship&service&is&held&with&a&collection&for&Christian&Aid&followed&by&refreshment,&and&in&the&recent&past&a&joint&social&evening&has&been&included.&Two&St&Benedict’s&members&have&a&strong&involvement&as&members&of&the&board&of&governors&of&our&local&Church&in&Wales&Primary&School.&A&deanery&Lent&quiet&day&is&held& in& Llandudno,& the& venue&being& the&parish&hall& of& the&Roman&Catholic& church.&This& is& attended&by&other&parishes&in&the&deanery.&At&least&one&member&of&St&Benedict’s&church&sits&on&the&board&of&trustees&of&our&local&food&bank,&and&the&congregation&donates&generously&to&this&worthy&cause.&There&is&some&participation&in&the&Conwy&Valley& Prayer& Fellowship&which&meets& twice& a& year;& this&was& formed& by&Roy&Godwin& of& the& FfaldWyWBrennin&retreat&house.&&Weekly&coffee&mornings&are&held&followed&by&meditation&at&the&nearby&Methodist&church&which&are&attended&by&some&members&of&our&parish.&&Working&and&worshiping&together&with&fellow&Christians&has&proved&to&be&a&happy&and&worthwhile&venture&and&is&a&source&of&encouragement&to&all&who&seek&to&serve&our&Lord&Jesus&Christ&.&We&are&keen&to&further&this&endeavour&and&widen&its&scope&in&the&future.&&&&&

The&parishes&of&Conwy&and&Gyffin&clearly&contain&people&with&wide&ranging&theological&perspectives.&There&are,& however,& a& very& significant& number& of& people& (particularly& who& worship& in& Conwy)& who& are&comfortable&with&the&labels&‘evangelical’&and&‘conservative’.&Whilst&these&terms&are&open&to&interpretation&(by&those&within&this&community),&the&parish&is&united&in&its&attempt&to&live&the&Bible&and&it’s&commands.&&
