Pathway for Thermal Efficiency Improvement
Thermal efficiency improvement from theoretical equation;
𝜼th = 𝟏 −𝟏
𝜺𝜸−𝟏
Determination Factors are only ε : Engine specifications and 𝛾: Gas composition
How to determine optimum ε to achieve 55% of BTE? For ε = 18.0, 𝜂th = 68% while 𝜂b of the single cylinder engine = Max.47%
Assume each loss is unchanged, 𝜂th = 76% to achieve 𝜂b = 55% (8% increase), namely ε = 35.0 will be essential
Consider whether it is possible to apply the theoretical equation itself to such a high ε, or not
Potential to control 𝛾
Each loss reduction, that is gap reduction between 𝜂th and 𝜂b
Why BTE of large 2-stroke marine engines is so high, even with relatively low ε (about 14.0)?
Cooling loss and exhaust loss are directly correlated with the engine specifications and the combustion control

The optimum BTE was achieved at the
pressure ratio of around 1.4 under the high
load condition, since the heat loss was
significantly increased for the pressure ratio
of above 1.38.
Interestingly, the mechanical loss was the
highest at the most Diesel-like combustion
regardless of Pmax.

Although there could be a trade-
off between ITE and heat loss,
there remains a room for the
improvement in BTE.
Heat loss reduction is much
more important for further BTE
improvement by the HRR profile
control.

From the comparison of Baseline and Iron thermal spray, surface roughness affects heat loss. This could also be the reason why ZrO2 was little effect on heat loss.

Investigate the effect of squish flow (varied with different compression ratio, or cavity diameter) on the wall temperature distribution
Identify the practical wall temperature (as the temperature and heat transfer coefficient of the coolant side was in constant, higher wall temperature indicates higher heat loss)
As compression ratio increased (cavity diameter decreased), hot spot in the cylinder head surface moved toward the periphery of the cylinder

By utilizing ε: 26:1 piston, experiments were carried out to reduce squish velocity with thicker cylinder head
gasket like ε: 30:1 ‘s case. The result indicated that higher cooling loss was observed under less squish velocity.
Difference in the cylinder head wall temperature distribution could be a hint for reducing cooling loss.

SAE High Efficiency IC Engine Symposium
SAE High Efficiency IC Engine Symposium

Dedicated EGR: Using In-Cylinder Reforming To Increase Thermal Efficiency in SI Engines
Terry Alger氏(SwRI)
54
Fuel to Power Compression Ignition Engine
Virginie Morel氏(Aramco)

THE STATE OF SIMULATION FOR IC ENGINE DESIGN ・ENABLING HIGH THROUGHPUT CALCULATIONS ON SUPERCOMPUTERS FOR EFFICIENT ENGINE DESIGN
High Efficiency

Potential of VCR to Meet Future Legislative

2016 SAE HEICE

Smoke

Control of predefined diesel combustion
processes by a burn-rate model
Reza Rezaei
(IAV GmbH)
67
Electrically assisted turbocharging in long-
haul truck application Hans Felix Seitz
(AVL List GmbH)
68
3rd ATZ International Engine Congress
