Foreign hospitals aren’t required to file Medicare claims. If you’re admitted to aforeign hospital under one of the situations below, and if that hospital doesn’t submitMedicare claims for you, you need to submit an itemized bill to Medicare for yourdoctor, inpatient, and ambulance services.Copy & paste News You Can Use items into your newsletter, then complete a PAM form.If you’re planning a vacation this summer, you know there’s a lot to do before yourleave... you have to buy sunscreen, book your flight and renew your passport. Don’tforget to include 2 very important items on your travel to-do list if you plan to leave thecountry on your trip:1. Look into Medicare coverage outside the United States.

    2. Think about getting additional health care coverage.

For people with Medicare, health care services and supplies are covered when you’re inthe United States, which includes Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, AmericanSamoa and the Northern Mariana Islands. But, if you plan to travel overseas or outsidethe U.S. (including to Canada or Mexico), it’s important to know if your Medicarecoverage will be different. In most cases, Medicare won’t pay for health care services or supplies you get outsidethe U.S. Medicare may pay for health care and services you get outside the U.S. incertain rare cases, some of which are described below.

Part A may pay for inpatient hospital, doctor, or ambulance services you get in a foreigncountry when:

    • You’re in the U.S. when a medical emergency occurs, and the foreign hospital is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat your medical condition.

    • You’re traveling through Canada without unreasonable delay by the most direct route between Alaska and another state when a medical emergency occurs, and the Canadian hospital is closer than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat the emergency.

    • You live in the U.S. and the foreign hospital is closer to your home than the nearest U.S. hospital that can treat your medical condition, regardless of whether an emergency exists.

Travelling abroad with Medicare con’tPart B covers emergency and non-emergency ambulance and doctor services you getimmediately before and during your covered foreign inpatient hospital stay. Medicaregenerally won’t pay for services if Medicare didn’t cover your hospital stay, or youreceived ambulance and doctor services outside the hospital after your coveredhospital stay ended.

You pay the part of the charge you would normally pay for covered services, includingany medically necessary doctor and ambulance services you get in a foreign country aspart of a covered inpatienthospital stay. You also pay the coinsurance, copayments anddeductibles you’d normally pay if you got these same services or supplies inside theU.S.Part B may cover medically necessary health care services you get on board a shipwithin the territorial waters adjoining the land areas of the U.S. Medicare won’t pay forhealth care services you get when a ship is more than 6 hours away from a U.S. port. Also, some Medicare supplement policies cover foreign travel emergencies.Because Medicare coverage outside the U.S. is limited, you may want to consider travelinsurance. Not all travel policies include health insurance, so ask questions and readthe terms and conditions carefully.Figuring out your health care coverage will help you be prepared so you can have astress-free trip. Sleep Apnea is a disorder where one experiences pauses in the breathing or shallowbreaths when they sleep. The length of these pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. The effects of Sleep Apnea vary in severity, from disrupted sleep cycles leading to a feeling of fatigue throughoutthe day, to a high risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and heart failure if leftuntreated. It also increases the likelihood of arrhythmias.

There are two types of Sleep Apnea, with the most commonbeing Obstructive Sleep Apnea. This is caused by therelaxation of muscles and tissues in the throat and airpassages during sleep. This causes blood pressure to rise, andthe amount of oxygen in the blood to drop. The other type isCentral Sleep Apnea, which is notably less common. This iscaused by an imbalance in the respiratory control sections ofthe brain, and the brain does not respond to normal triggersthat would cause a person to take a breath. Treatment is

available through the use of a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. This is worn during sleep, andmoves air into the airways in the nose and throat so as to keep them open. Also, adjustable beds have beenknown to help those who have Sleep Apnea.

University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center offers a Lung and Sleep Center for treating Sleep Apnea. The centerfeatures four beds, which are video-monitored while the patient sleeps to determine the severity of theirsymptoms. By providing the Lung and Sleep Center, UH Geauga Medical Center is helping to ensure that GeaugaCounty residents receive the most advanced treatment.
