PROJECT SCOPE
THE SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:
1. UNDER A SEPARATE PERMIT , REMOVAL OF THE EXISTING HALON FIRE
SUPPRESSION SYSTEM FROM THE DIESEL FUEL STORAGE TANK ROOM.
SEE SHEET G-2 FOR HALON SYSTEM REMOVAL REQUIREMENTS.
2. UPGRADE OF THE DIESEL FUEL TANK AND PIPING SYSTEM TO BE IN
CONFORMANCE WITH BUILDING AND FIRE CODE REQUIREMENTS AS
WELL AS ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS.
THE EXISTING PUMP STATION BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1987.
THE ORIGINAL PERMIT PLANS (A-1 AND S-1) ARE SHOWN ON SHEETS G-3 AND
G-4 FOR INFORMATION ONLY.
ROB GRIFFIN OF THE EAST NAPLES FIRE DEPARTMENT HAS INSPECTED A

CODE ANALYSIS
THE EXISTING BUILDING IS OF TYPE II CONSTRUCTION
THE EXISTING OCCUPANCY IS PRESENTLY:
OCCUPANCY S, GENERATOR/SWITCHGEAR ROOM
OCCUPANCY H, FUEL STORAGE ROOM
THE ROOMS ARE SEPARATED BY A 4 HOUR WALL AND THE
CEILING/ROOF STRUCTURE CONSTRUCTION IS A PRECAST
PRESTRESSED CONCRETE SLAB. THE SEPARATION WALL SHALL BE
RECLASSIFIED AS 1 HOUR.
NFPA 37 (2006) STANDARD FOR THE INSTALLATION OF STATIONARY
COMBUSTION ENGINES AND GAS TURBINE SETS THE REQUIREMENTS
FOR DIESEL FUEL (A TYPE II COMBUSTIBLE LIQUID) STORAGE IN A
BUILDING HOUSING A DIESEL GENERATOR WITH A FUEL TANK LOCATED
IN A FUEL STORAGE ROOM.
BASED ON THE ABOVE THE FUEL STORAGE ROOM WAS ERRONEOUSLY
LISTED AS AN H OCCUPANCY IN THE ORIGINAL PLANS AND MEETS THE
REQUIREMENTS OF NFPA 37 (2006) AS AN S OCCUPANCY.
HALON SYSTEM REMOVAL REQUIREMENTS
A FLORIDA LICENSED FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM CONTRACTOR (FIRE
CONTRACTOR III) SHALL:
a) OBTAIN A DEMOLITION PERMIT FOR THE PROPOSED WORK
b) FILE ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
c) COLLECT HALON GAS FROM THE EXISTING SYSTEM IN
CONFORMANCE WITH ALL APPLICABLE REGULATIONS
d) CREDIT THE OWNER FOR THE SALVAGE VALUE OF THE HALON GAS
e) REMOVE THE ENTIRE HALON SYSTEM INCLUDING CONTROLS AND
ALARMS AND DISPOSE OF IT IN ACCORDANCE WITH
ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS
NARRATIVE
NFPA 37 (2006) SECTION 6.3 PARAGRAPH 6.3.5.1ALLOWS THE INSTALLATION OF
FUEL TANKS CONTAINING LIQUID FUELS OTHER THEN CLASS I FUELS WITH AN
AGGREGATE CAPACITY OF 5000 L (1320 GALLONS) OR LESS IN STORAGE
ROOMS HOUSING IF THE ROOM WALLS, FLOOR AND CEILING HAVE A FIRE
RESISTANCE RATING OF NOT LESS THEN ONE HOUR WITH THE WALLS BONDED
TO THE FLOOR.
THE EXISTING STORAGE ROOM EXCEEDS THESE REQUIREMENTS.
WITH A CHANGE OF THE ROOM FROM H TO S OCCUPANCY FIRE SUPPRESSION
IS NOT REQUIRED FOR THE STORAGE ROOM.
