THE media watchdog Center for Media Freedom and Re-sponsibility (CMFR) said, over-all, the media did a better jobin covering the 2010 elections than in previous elections. However, there were still some lapses and mistakes.

Best PracticesThere may have been inconsistencies in the election cov-

erage, but the press also showed improvements in terms oforganizing forums, debates and public affairs programs toprovide a venue where the different candidates could presenttheir platform to the general public. The media was also ableto provide better coverage because it prepared well monthsbefore the elections. News anchors were better prepared andsenior reporters were assigned to different locations to bemore effective in their news reporting.

New media such as social networking sites specificallyFacebook and Twitter helped in the quick delivery of infor-mation to the public. Aside from this, citizen journalism alsoflourished in this year’s election coverage. ABS-CBN’s BotoMo, Ipatrol mo, GMA’s You Scoop and TV 5’s JournalisMoare just examples of the media’s campaign to involve thepublic in the drive for a clean elections. According to Teodoro, citizen journalism boosts the credibility of media and givesthe public the image of being politically aware.

Lapses “Our elections are decided by money politics or how much

a candidate can spend for advertising” said Teodoro. Onlythose who had the money to advertise emerged as winnersbecause the media was not covering the other candidateswho are also qualified but do not have enough resources topay for ads.

The CMFR also observed that the media focused its cover-age more on the presidentiables to the detriment of the can-didates for vice-president, senators and party list groups.

“There is very little coverage on the senatorial campaignand elections,” Teodoro said.

Aside from the senatorial bets, party list groups appearedto be the least priority of media networks in their electioncoverage. “Party list elections were not covered. There is notenough explanation as to what party list elections are allabout. Instead, the media focused on the statement of Com-mission on Elections (COMELEC) chairman Jose Melo ex-plaining the requirements for nominees of party list groups, especially after party-list group Ang Galing Pinoy announcedthat its first nominee would be Mikey Arroyo, the son of Pres.Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Thus, party-list groups of tradi-tional politicians and moneyed clans had the advantage ofhaving a lot of funds and resources for campaigning. Thisdefeats the purpose of party-list elections, which is to pro-vide representation to marginalized sectors and groups.

The pre-mature release of so-called “reports”, which turnedout to be merely part of the usual mudslinging and black pro-paganda being thrown by candidates against each other, isalso one of the glaring mistakes in media coverage of the elec-tion campaign and elections. Examples of these are the sup-posed psychiatric evaluation report on Sen. Noynoy Aquinoand the alleged photos of the mansions of Sen. Manny Villar.

When asked about the propriety of media agencies hav-ing a clear bias for certain candidates, Teodoro said, “Theremay be individual biases, but there should be no institu-tional bias. The Philippine Daily Inquirer was clearly root-ing for Aquino. Two of its columnists admitted that they wereparticipating in Aquino’s campaign. It is a violation of me-dia ethics if a columnist uses his or her column to campaign, but if he or she is merely expressing an opinion in the col-umn, then it is legitimate.”

Moreover, the CMFR observed that media networks ownedand controlled by the government were clearly focused onthe campaign of Lakas Kampi-CMD presidential bet GilbertTeodoro, and other candidates in its ticket. Bulatlat.com

Our Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadYou may be familiar with the list of seven deadly sins that was formulated during

the sixth century: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, vengeance, envy, and pride. But youmay not know that the original list compiled during the fourth century also includedthe sin of sadness. Over the years, that emotion was omitted from the inventory.

Some people are blessed with a cheerful disposition. They always seem to behappy. They wear a perpetual smile almost as if they were advertising toothpaste. But then there are others who seem to be chronically sad. They continually complainabout life and its burdens. And who can deny that afflictions are discouraging?

While we acknowledge that not everybody is blessed with a bright outlook on life,we need to remember that joy is one of the gifts Jesus promised to His followers. Andwe need to resist any tendency to let sadness dominate our emotional lives.

Jesus promised His disciples on the night Judas betrayed Him, “Your joy no onewill take from you” (John 16:22). Remember that joy is the fruit of the indwellingHoly Spirit (Gal. 5:22). Let’s ask the Lord to help us look beyond our sorrowfulcircumstances and encourage our hearts by the vision of joy that awaits us (Heb.12:2). — Vernon C. Grounds

You alone, Lord Jesus, can true joy impart, For You know the sorrow of thehuman heart; You came here from glory many hearts to win

And in love for sinners suffered once for sin. —Anon.Joy is a fruit of the Spirit that’s always in season.

Summer Scrappin’ Tips

Pacquiao bounces back to workBOXING icon Manny Pacquiao has been

through a lot of trials in his life. He grew upin an impoverished life and done odd jobsuntil he joined boxing to earn a living.

Pacquiao has been knocked out twice dur-ing the early part of his boxing career. Butyou just can't keep a great man down.

The seven-division champion has won hispast 12 fights, a span of more than five yearsthat include eight knockouts.

Yesterday, just hours after climbing out of ahospital bed, the crossover star and recentlyelected congressman was in a studio filming asoon-to-be-released sitcom, “Show Me TheManny.”

After three days of treatment for “stom-ach pain from an ulcer and acid refluxand fatigue,” the 31-year-old WBO wel-terweight (147 pounds) champion wasreleased from the Cardinal Santos Hos-pital in San Juan, his adviser, MichaelKoncz, told FanHouse.

Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts) was ad-mitted on Sunday, and rested until being dis-

charged, said Koncz. Pacquiao had success-fully campaigned for a congressional seat inthe Sarangani province following the May10 elections.

Pacquiao's diagnoses was the result of aroutine checkup on Sunday, after which hisfamily convinced him to stay at the hospital, according to Pacquiao's political adviser, MilesRoces.

As much energy as Pacquiao exerts in thering, let alone that which he exerted duringhis landslide congressional victory, beinghospitalized was among the rare timesPacquiao has been off of his feet in the ringor out.

“Well, that’s not exactly accurate,” saidKoncz. "He does sleep."

Pacquiao received intravenous dextrosedrips while hospitalized.

“You know that the guy is always out, buthe realized that he needed the rest,” said Roces.“So now, he's taking some time off from theexhaustive routine, spending some time withhis family, with his kids.”

Fil-Ams Williams and Alapagare Players of the Week

A SOUPED -UP lineup withsome of the best shooters in theland can only mean one thing --that team is going to be mean inscoring and may even get to thefinals.

Come to think of it, Talk 'N Textadded a bomb to its already strongballclub by recruiting Kelley Wil-liams from Sta. Lucia and pairedhim up with topnotch guardJimmy Alapag.

The two Fil-Ams seem to haveblended together well and areforming the cornerstone of TNT'soffense with their tremendouszest, youth and energy.

The fact is Alapag and Will-iams earned themselves theAccel-PBA Press Corps’ Co-Play-

ers of the Week honors for theperiod of May 17 to 23.

Alapag, the TNT mainstay anddo-it-all player Williams, alongwith Ryan Reyes and CharlesWaters acquired from Sta. LuciaRealty last May 12, have consis-tently provided the Texters thespark and sustaining fire that kepttheir bid for a franchise recordstreak alive.

Teammate Macmac Cardonaactually put up a higher two-gamescoring average (17.5 points pergame or ppg), while Jay Wash-ington of San Miguel Beer andMark Caguioa of BarangayGinebra also led their respectiveteams to similar 2-0 win-lossslates for the week.

Magic stays alive, snatchesGame 4 from Celtics

BOSTON —Put away thebrooms. Hold off on those “BeatL.A!" chants. The Boston Celticsstill have some work to do beforethey can play for their secondNBA title in three years.

Dwight Howard had 32 pointsand 16 rebounds, and JameerNelson made back-to-back 3-pointers in overtime to lead theOrlando Magic to a 96-92 victoryover Boston on Monday night toavoid a four-game sweep in theEastern Conference finals.

Dressing in the same lockerroom where the Philadelphia Fly-ers celebrated their comeback

from a 3-0 deficit against the Bos-ton Bruins in the NHL’s Eastsemifinals, the Magic avoidedelimination and sent the seriesback to Orlando for Game 5 onWednesday night. The Bruins alsolost Game 4 in overtime.

“We know that we were down3-0, and we didn’t want to gohome (for the season)," Howardsaid. “It starts with me andJameer. Me and Jameer showedour leadership by playing hard. We’ve got to be the leaders for thisteam. It’s not about points, but justshowing everybody, ‘Hey, followus and we’ll lead the way."’

THE University ofSanto Tomas neverhad it so good.

It’s been more thana decade since the lasttime the España-based school experi-enced a festive celebra-tion when its basket-ball team won a rarefour-peat in the UAAP.

This time, it’s UST'svolleyball team whichis on the threshold ofhistory. Will it be Vic-tory Day for the Ti-gresses, who are seek-ing a date with destinyfor volleyball’s glory?

The Tigresses gunfor a sweep and a rarethree-peat against theSan Sebastian LadyStags in Game 2 of the7th Shakey's V-LeagueFirst Conference finalsat The Arena in SanJuan.

The Tigressesbucked the absence ofAngeli Tabaquero asveteran Mary JeanBalse and Aiza Maizoled their team to a 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15victory and move onestep closer to a recordsixth league title.

If UST completes asweep, it will becomethe second team to winthree straight titlessince the league beganin 2004. La Salle wasthe first team to do suchfeat from 2004-06.
