Fiscal Year 2019 was a great year of building for Council for Relationships. We grew in many ways and we set the stage for success for our current fiscal year.

First and foremost, we provided services to almost 6,000 people – a 10% increase over the prior year. This growth is due to the hard work of Council’s more than 100 dedicated therapists, psychiatrists and interns – as well as all of the other staff members who make our services possible.

Council enjoyed a number of other achievements during the year, many of which are highlighted in this annual report. In addition, we:

• Completed our first full year of partnership with Headstrong, enabling us to provide crucial services to qualified veterans free of charge;• Doubled our professional development workshop offerings, in addition to providing our Master’s Program (in partnership with Thomas Jefferson University) and our Post- Graduate Certificate Programs in Couple & Family Therapy and Sex Therapy;• Renovated our University City office which created four additional counseling offices so we can serve more people, and many months after completion, still elicits compliments from those who remember the dated interior.

Perhaps most remarkably, we set the stage for what we believe was a milestone in Council’s history: on November 9th when about 375 people celebrated Steve Treat’s remarkable career and all of his contributions to Council for Relationships, organizationally, and to so many people, personally. We are pleased to have a special insert commemorating the Steve Treat Tribute Dinner in this Annual Report.

As a result of early sponsorships received for the Tribute Dinner and initial commitments for special initiatives we are starting (and about which you will learn more), we almost doubled funds raised in Fiscal Year 2019 compared to the previous year. Clearly, we could not have accomplished that without your support – both literal and figurative.

Thank you for a great year and we look forward to growing even stronger in 2020.

COUNSELING

We train the next generation of clinicians through our Master’s and Post Graduate Programs in Couple and Family Therapy and Sex Therapy, and continuing education workshops for behavioral health professionals.

EDUCATION

Research, such as the Transcending Trauma Project, explores how we can better provide therapy services to all.

2019 HIGHLIGHTS

In Fiscal Year 2019, Council for Relationships launched an Online Therapy program for clients anywhere in Pennsylvania. This program makes it possible for clients who may not be able to come to one of Council’s offices to access the same high-quality therapy services available in person. Over half of Council’s therapists are trained to provide online therapy.

The Master’s in Family Therapy is a fully-integrated program with the Community Trauma Counseling program under the Department of Counseling & Behavioral Health at our partner organization, Thomas Jefferson University. In 2019, a group of students traveled to Morocco to learn about mental health services in other parts of the world. The students traveled to hospitals, orphanages, and senior citizen homes. They provided counseling services with the help of faculty supervisors and interpreters.

This past November, Steve Treat received the Dr. Emily Hartshorne Mudd Award and was honored at a dinner attended by about 375 people. The event, which paid tribute to Steve’s remarkable career, raised over $550,000 for Council’s work with underserved communities. More information about the event and its supporters is detailed in the special insert.

WORK WITH UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIESCouncil’s work with underserved communities, reaching more than

2,000 people in Fiscal Year 2019, is at the heart of our mission:

Transcending Trauma Project (TTP) has examined how 98 Holocaust survivors have coped, adapted and rebuilt their lives. TTP is one of the only such projects to study the resulting intergenerational transmission of trauma and to focus on family dynamics as an indicator for coping and resilience. This past year, TTP completed a strategic plan so that the valuable lessons learned from its research can be applied to help others experiencing trauma. This past May, we hosted the discussion “Trauma and Resilience: An Intergenerational Conversation with Children and Grandchildren of Holocaust Survivors.”

Operation Home and Healing (OHH) provides counseling by specially-trained therapists for veterans, active service members, and their families. Military cultural competency training is also offered to behavioral health care providers at Council and in the area, so that even more veterans, active service members, and their loved ones will benefit from therapy that is most effective for them. OHH is the Philadelphia-based organizational partner of the renowned national Headstrong program.

Therapy Services are provided on a sliding scale, by closely-supervised interns, which allows access to services regardless of ability to pay. More than 1,100 people benefited from these services this past year.

Low Fee Therapy Services

Council provides free counseling services through on-site partnerships with 14 organizations that serve individuals and families experiencing homelessness, children living in economically challenged neighborhoods, and immigrants and refugees. In Fiscal Year 2019, Council expanded the Community Partnerships Initiative by having Staff Therapist Ryan McMillian on-site at Project HOME for a day and a half each week.
