Collection Type: Book Turning Title: 500 Wood Bowls Author: Lark Books Description: The wooden bowl rediscovered. This sumptuous, full-color photographic collection features 500 masterworks

from today's finest contemporary woodcraft artisans. Using age-old hand tools and modern machines, theseartists bend and shape the wood, blending inspiration and technical innovation with cultural influences fromAsia, Europe, and the Americas to create—fantastic shapes that continually delight. "...a wealth of visual imagery... Beautiful reproductions." —Art Times Wood bowls are common to virtually every culture on every continent, where their functions range fromutilitarian to extravagantly ceremonial. In the latter half of the twentieth century, contemporary artisans began torediscover the creative potential inherent in the wood bowl's form. This new generation of "bowl makers" hasproduced an extraordinary array of magnificent artworks. Far removed from their beginnings as simple holdingvessels, the 500 wood bowls featured here celebrate both the artistic vision and transformative technique ofdozens of contemporary woodcraft artisans. They bring their visions to life by exploiting the special properties of the wood itself. Warm, forgiving, andmalleable, wood adapts to an extraordinary range of working tool techniques, from powerful hydraulic chainsaws and laser cutting machines to traditional hand-shaping tools. This full-color pictorial survey showcases therich variety of the bowl-turner's art, from the gentle elegance of Christian Burchard's sandblasted and bleachedmadrone burl, "White Gourd," to the striking wood and copper "Oceanic Anointing Vessel"from New Zealandartist John Ecuyer, who pays homage to South Pacific island ceremonial traditions. While some of the artists employ such exotic woods as eucalyptus, ambrosia maple, koa, Makassar ebony, andcocobolo, others, including Peter M. Petrochko and Eli Avisera, demonstrate that laminates and even plywoodcan be an effective medium for an artist's creativity. Inlays of gold, copper, or silver make powerful statements, yet some of the most inspiring pieces show their strength through their simplicity and grace. A source of unending inspiration to the woodworker and hobbyist, or anyone who simply loves beautiful objects, this collection showcases the artistry of those who choose to pour their visions into magnificent wood bowls. Other Titles in This Series 400 Wood Boxes 500 Bowls 500 Figures in Clay 500 Teapots

In addition,we appreciate the collectors who offered work from their collections for the duration of the exhibition. We are grateful to over 150 donors, consisting primarily of past symposium participants and presenters, whoseattendance at past symposia and financial contributions toward this effort made it possible. It was withappreciation we received encouragement and financial support from the American Association of Woodturners. We recognize Eduardo Godinez (layout and design) and Don Dafoe Jr. (photography) for the many eveninghours preparing the book for production deadlines. Within the Museum of Art at Brigham Young University are many individuals who spent considerable hoursplanning and organizing the exhibition. We particularly appreciate the efforts of Campbell Gray, director; DawnPheysey and Anastasia Rees, curators; Paul L. Anderson, senior exhibition designer; Sue Thompson and LyndaPalma, registrars; Cheryl] May, public programs coordinator; and John Adams, exhibition production manager, for believing in the exhibition enough to add it to an already full museum schedule. Collection Type: Book Turning Title: Masters: Woodturning - Major Works by Leading Artists Author: Christiansen, Jim Description: MASTERS WOODTURNING

Formerly used to create utilitarian objects or furniture parts, the wood lathe has become a tool in the hands ofartists only in the last 25 years. Now you can see how this craft has developed by looking at 40 innovators in thefield today. Their groundbreaking pieces are rooted in tradition but are influenced by new design trends. Books in the Masters series focus on leading artists in a specific media. The pioneers selected for this editionhave expanded our notions of what is possible with the lathe-turned wood form. They present their mostimpressive works in stunning color photographs accompanied by their thoughts on the nature of wood, thenatural world, and art. Short essays by curator Jim Christiansen highlight the artists' methods and intentions, providing a unique portrait of each master. A number of turners show us that even subtle changes in line and shape can make a great difference in afinished piece. Because Bill Luce strives to simplify his designs through refinement, he often creates work suchas bowls in a series in order to study nuances of shape and tactile balance. The use of the lathe to also createsculpture is now a major part of the current design scene. Jean-Francois Escoulen's whimsical sculptures havebroadened the possibilities of multi-axis turning, an uncommon technique before he began using it. Adding colorto wood creations was considered radical until only recently. Today, Donald Derry highlights the natural beautyof his material by using bright colors to accentuate grain patterns. He creates pieces that are often mistaken forglass. The extraordinary masters featured in this collection will impress artists and collectors alike with the versatilityand innovation displayed in their work.

Collection Type: Book Turning Title: Vancouver & FVWG Present - Russ Fairfield Author: Fairfield, Russ Description: RUSS FAIRFIELD'S WOODTURNING RESUME

I can make the claim that I am an "old-timer" because I was turning wood before there were 4-jaw scroll chucksand "Craft Supplies". A piece of wood was held between centers or attached to a homemade faceplate, and wemade our own turning tools from truck springs, carpenters chisels, drill rod, and machinist's tool bits. My lifelong career as a woodturner started in high school in the early 50's, and it is more notable for its longperiods of no activity, rather than for its accomplishments. The longest was during the 60's and 70's as Ifollowed a career as an engineer in the pulp and paper industry. Increasing job and family responsibilities, andmoving to a new location every two years left little time for woodturning. I arrived in Tallahassee, Florida in 1982, and decided that this was the end of the career moves. I found myselfsurrounded by more species of exotic wood than I had ever dreamed were possible and a very active art fairmarket. With the purchase of a new lathe, I was back into woodturning, and I have not stopped since. But, there was one more disrupting move. Following retirement in 1999, we came home to Washington State.Since that interruption, I have concentrated on collecting wood, turning as many segmented, square, and naturaledge shapes as time permits, writing a book on woodturning, attending art fairs, and preparing for theconstruction of a woodturning studio this summer. When I left the Northwest in 1965, I knew of only five active woodturners in all of Washington and Oregon.Times have changed. Russ Fairfield
