Wh at is neuron?y Neuron is a cell that uses biochemical
reactions to receive, process andtransmit information.
y It is connected to a thousand neurons.y
The brain is a collection of about 100billion interconnected neurons.

A rtificial Neural Networksy A neural network is a massively parallel distributed
computing system that has a natural propensity for
storing experiential knowledge and making it availablefor use. It resembles the brain in two respects:y Knowledge is acquired by the network through a
learning process (called training)y
Interneuron connection strengths known as synaptic weights are used to store the knowledgey Knowledge in the artificial neural networks is implicit
and distributed.

S tatement of t h e Problemy Network management is to provide network users with
an acceptable quality of service.y To reach this goal, network managers are trying toautomate as many network operations tasks as
possible.y An issue that is burdening many computer network
managers is increasing trafficy Three of the major frame relay communications
corporationsy MCI Communications, Sprint and LDDS

F uzzy Reasoningy Fuzzy reasoning refers to the superset of classical
reasoning (Boolean logic) that has been augmented torecognize and manage imprecise information.
y This is accomplished through the use of fuzzy sets or fuzzy rules.
y A fuzzy set is one whose members either belongcompletely, partially, or not at all.
y The term fuzzy refers to the situation where theboundaries of a set of observations are not well defined.
y e.g. expensive automobiles, large houses , effectivemedicines, and successful businesses.

Fuzzy Neural Network for RoutingConsider the computer network in Figure . Suppose a messageneeds to be sent from node A (source) to node G (destination). The first decision faced by the routing algorithm at node A will beto determine if the message should be transmitted through node B(link 1),node C (link 2) or node D (link 3). Determining a value for each of those three possible outgoing links will make this decision. Thesethree values, computed by the proposed routing strategy, will
represent the expected time to destination via node B (link 1), nodeC (link 2) and node D (link 3). These three time values will becompared and the link that gives the shortest expected time will bechosen as the first link in routing the message to the destination(node G).

S ummaryComputer networks are becoming more abundant in
today s business environments as they play a central rolein maintaining and transmitting information. Many organizations have realized that ease of access toinformation is a critical need that can also build acompetitive advantage if it is easily accessible. Networks
play a central role in this concept for many reasons, withthe most important being that they can helpgeographically dispersed organizations overcome thegeographic obstacle.
