Principle 1: PurposeWe will develop the capabilities of students to be future generators of sustainable value for business and society at large and to work for an inclusive and sustainable global economy.

Maastricht School of Management has its roots in the Institute for Management Science at the Technical University in Delft (RVB), dating back to 1952. In 1989, the school moved to the historical city of Maastricht.

Maastricht School of Management is a leading provider of management education with worldwide presence. As a key player in global education, we have more than 2000 students graduating each year in more than 20 countries, making us the largest and most international business school in the Netherlands.

MSM offers the prestigious management degree programs of Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science (MSc), Executive MBA (EMBA), Global Distance MBA (GDMBA), Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). We also offer a wide range of certificate and diploma based executive programs, including tailor-made programs, for those seeking to improve their knowledge and skills in specific competence areas, such as project management, or to deepen their understanding of specific core management disciplines, such as finance or marketing. Our programs are designed to stimulate creative management thinking, transforming knowledge of management theory into effective business practice.

Most of our students are young professionals and mid-career executives from private companies, universities, governmental organizations and NGO’s. Our graduates return to their respective organizations with greatly enhanced career prospects, as well as an enviable portfolio of global business contacts accessible through our international alumni network.

Our mission is to enhance the management capacity of professionals and organizations in and for emerging economies and developing countries with the objective to substantially contribute to the development of these societies.

In line with our mission, we are involved in management development research and other international projects throughout the world. Students regularly take part in our partnership programs in Azerbaijan, China, Egypt, Germany, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Malawi, Namibia, Peru, Poland, Romania, Suriname, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, Yemen, and Zambia.

Principle 2: ValuesWe will incorporate into our academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility as portrayed in international initiatives such as the United Nations Global Compact.

The values of (Global) Social Responsibility and Sustainability are integrated in the curricula as part of the management degree programs of Master of Business Administration (MBA), Executive MBA (EMBA), Executive Programs (EP), and our doctoral programs (DBA/PhD). Besides integrating (Global) Social Responsibility and Sustainability in the curricula, MSM also incorporates these values in our research activities as well as by organizing academic activities. A selection of courses, programs and activities will be given below.

Academic Curricula

MBA and MM Programs

Full-Time MBA and MBA and MM Collaborative Global Programs offered by the MEUSE Institute

The global business environment of today needs executives who can recognize global trends and respond successfully to them. The Maastricht School of Management MBA programs raises the standard of management knowledge and practice of managers and mid-career professionals through the study of management theory based on empirical research, all in a multicultural, multidisciplinary setting. Our MBA participants have the opportunity to share their expertise with fellow students and faculty members from all over the world. Thus a unique, stimulating environment is created, in which their knowledge and skills are enhanced both inside and outside the classroom. Our proximity to other major European countries and our global network of partners only adds to our attractiveness as an international management school.

The MBA curriculum consists of several courses, which emphasize or cover subjects in the field of (Global) Social Responsibility and Sustainability. In particular, a new course completely focused on sustainability has been introduced.

Apart from a full-time MBA program offered in Maastricht, the program is also offered worldwide through The Maastricht-EU Institute for the Study of Emerging Economies (MEUSE-Institute), which is an institute of Maastricht School of Management (MSM). The institute’s mission is to promote sustainable and ethical business, business education and business innovation in emerging and developing economies for inclusive global development, in both the EU and emerging and developing countries. This mission is crucial given the need for better understanding and supporting the evolving nature of business, management and entrepreneurship in emerging and developing economies (henceforth ‘emerging economies’) and how this impacts on the EU. The position of the EU vis-à-vis new rising world powers is highly topical as continued growth and prosperity, in both emerging economies and the EU stand to gain much from new ideas, knowledge and information. The MEUSE-Institute was established in early 2014 by Maastricht School of Management, one of the oldest and most international business schools in the

Corporate Responsibility and EthicsEthics deals with values, norms and standards that we - both individually and collectively - apply to our behaviour and our activities. In a global society the debate about these values, norms and standards is necessary in order to (prosperously) co-exist and contribute to a life worth living. An open dialogue is also - if not predominantly - required for economic arena, where different stakeholders might have different views on the responsibilities of corporations, investors, governments and the civil society. The main objective of the course is to familiarise students with an ethical orientation toward the worlds of business and investment. Using theories, concrete examples, videos, cases and the like, students learn to analyze ethical, corporate responsibility and responsible investment issues. Students are expected to actively participate in discussions and other work forms.

The objectives of this course is to develop the competences of the students to understand, apply and critically evaluate the corporate social responsibility within their organization and sustainable value for a business environment.

Executive Education

Curriculum as part of the “Executive Programs”MSM also offers different Executive Programs that focus on sustainable management. The Executive Programs are for executives who want to develop their management capabilities to face the challenges of today's global business community more effectively. The Maastricht School of Management Executive Programs are designed to give executives the skills they need to respond to tomorrow's management challenges today. The Executive Programs are designed to be completed within 3 to 12 weeks.

Below is the portfolio of MSM Executive Programs (EP) with focus on sustainability.

1. Managing Sustainable Development (MSD) - 3 weeks certificate based program Contributing to economic & social development.

This program demonstrates how issues such as poverty, the failure of basic public services and environmental pollution can be successfully managed through a cooperative development approach transcending the traditional boundaries between the public and private sectors and within traditional social networks.

Our experts help executives explore ways to contribute to the sustainable performance of their organization and regional economy, enabling them to gain substantial insight into stakeholder management, corporate social responsibility (CSR), the “greening” of organizations, developing global value chains, and collaboration through partnerships and stakeholder dialogues. The individual action plan executives develop during the program enables them to put their new knowledge and skills into practice in their daily work.

2. Sustainable Tourism Management (STM) - 3 weeks certificate based program Contributing to sustainable tourism development worldwide. By exchanging views with experts in the field of sustainable tourism development, our STM program provides executives with new insights into the main concepts, best practices and tools necessary to develop sustainable tourism.

We explore how tourism can contribute to local economic development, poverty alleviation and nature conservation. We demonstrate the importance of entrepreneurship, management and marketing in promoting sustainable tourism initiatives, whilst developing their ability to communicate and negotiate with the main stakeholders in the sector.

Part of the program will involve distance-learning/education. Executives are expected to work on a preparatory assignment before coming to Maastricht. Drawing on the knowledge and insights gained during the course, the executives will complete their work by presenting a final assignment at the end of the course.

DBA and PhD Programs Greater global and regional competition is increasing the pressure on organizations and individuals alike to add value to their services by broadening and deepening their knowledge and understanding. Maastricht School of Management has responded to this need with our Doctoral Programs, each seeking to expose you to inter-disciplinary management problems to help you develop a more global vision and understanding. Both the DBA and PhD programs are characterized by depth through dissertation research and breadth through comprehensive assessments of business functions.

DBA Our DBA enables you to master concepts and research skills directly related to management. DBA research tends towards a more applied-research orientation and, as such, draws more on practical business administration issues. The DBA emphasizes an interdisciplinary understanding and application of knowledge, which is highly relevant for managing from a global perspective.

PhDOur PhD Program is conducted as an MSM–University joint Doctoral Program. Among our collaborating partners are Dutch universities such as the University of Maastricht, the Universities of Twente, Wageningen, Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Tilburg. The PhD Degree is conferred by the collaborating university. PhD research is more theoretical and different in purpose to DBA research. Professors from the Maastricht School of Management and the collaborating university jointly supervise participants.

In our ongoing efforts to make high-quality management education accessible to as many individuals as possible, we offer our DBA programs in selective countries in the world. The design of the DBA programs abroad enable you to combine regular employment with your DBA studies.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES Activities in the field of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (Location, Maastricht)

CSR Workshop The CSR seminar is part of the full-time MBA program in Maastricht, The Netherlands and contains sessions on Responsibility with a number of organizations. The students learn the basics of CSR, corporate codes of conduct, stakeholder engagement, CSR issues and morality and the organization. During the session, several companies elaborate about there attitude en engagement to CSR within their company. The students have the possibility to gain more information about the CSR within several companies and the opportunity to ask critical questions and debate on CSR.

The objective of the CSR workshop is to develop the competences of the students to understand, apply and critically evaluate various attitudes to CSR by organizations.

Future Initiatives of MSM In January 2015 a full CSR (3 credit) course will become regular part of the MBA curriculum (next to the

CSR workshop). The Shared Value Action Learning Project (SVALP): In the 2012-2013 academic year we will introduce a

Shared Value Action Learning Project, which will be a substitute for the thesis. The project aims to match NGOs and For-Profit-Organizations in CSR projects and seeks to test a methodology for matching NGOs and For-Profits in such a way as to make CSR projects profitable for both the NGO and the For-Profits. At our Romanian partner school students presented their project reports in the summer of 2014. The SVALP experiences are now being evaluated and SVALP projects may also be offered in other locations, such as Azerbaijan.

Principle 3: MethodWe will create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership.

To enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership, MSM provides a diversity of course materials at the MSM Information Center, such like books, cases and articles based on (Global) Social Responsibility and Sustainability.

INFORMATION OFFICE

Library and research facilitiesA comprehensive library, the MSM Information Office, as well as other learning resources, are available to students and faculty. The Information Office of the Maastricht School of Management is specialized in the fields of Management, Finance, Information Technology, Operations, Environment, Accounting, Marketing and Economics. It contains about 10.000 books. The majority of the journal subscriptions are in electronic format. In addition, there is a growing collection of research papers from students from all MSM programs, theses and cases in electronic format (full-text). Newspapers and dictionaries are provided in hard copy.

An international thesaurus is used to classify the materials.

The Information Office is open 49 hours per week. The opening hours are:

Monday 10.00 a.m. to 7.45 p.m.

Tuesday 9.00 a.m. to 7.45 p.m.

Wednesday 10.00 a.m. to 7.45 p.m.

Thursday 10.00 a.m. to 7.45 p.m.

Friday 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.

ICT facilitiesThe ICT-platform in the Information Office is fully equipped with 50 multimedia monitors, internet access and many software applications. Scanning and printing facilities are also available in the Information Office.

Services The Information Office accepts information requests via mail, fax or email.

Information (books, articles, working papers, etc.) not available in the Information Office can be retrieved from other libraries through the interlibrary loan system. The Information Office is a member of the Dutch interlibrary loan service.

Case studies used for classroom teaching are obtained via The Case Centre. The Information Office is a member of The Case Centre.

8

Page 9: Future Initiatives of MSM - PRME - Principles for ... · Web viewMaastricht School of Management (MSM) is joining forces with the Dutch institute for higher education and scientific

The Information Office assists faculty and guest lecturers to obtain relevant lecturers materials through inspection copies requests, providing access to companion websites and maintaining contact with business literature publishers’ representatives on a regular basis.

Furthermore, the Information Office assists in many ways on- as well as off-campus students and faculty, guest lecturers and consultants through individual assistance with research and information retrieval and addressing requests for electronic copies of articles, working papers and other relevant materials and through information literacy instruction.

At the Information Desk participants can buy copy cards (€ 1.20 for 15 copies / € 2.80 for 35 copies).

AcquisitionsIndividual faculty members, MSM staff members and students can request the acquisition of new materials (books, journals, papers, cases and more). The Information Office staff discusses the acquisition of materials with the respective departments and based on the budget available. In case the acquisition cannot take place, an alternative (open access) resource will be made available.

Inter library loan (ILL)MSM’s Information Office is a member of the Dutch Inter Library Loan system. This service is only available to registered students, staff. Through ILL one can borrow books and obtain articles from other libraries in the Netherlands. But most of the relevant information is available in electronic format via databases in the Information Office portal.

Scholarly publications MSM staff The MSM Information Office plays a central role in collecting bibliographic details and the dissemination of these details of scholarly publications by MSM faculty, adjunct faculty and staff.

In collaboration with the MSM faculty, it is decided to use the APA-style for this purpose. Students will also be encouraged to use the APA-style for the bibliography in order to complete assignments, papers and theses.

Library resources and retrieval The Information Office is equipped with the cataloguing software V-Smart and V-link.

V-Smart, a web-based Integrated Library System (ILS), enjoys the benefits of a browser-based environment. The system incorporates all standard modules including circulation, cataloguing, acquisitions, serials and reporting. Through a visually appealing and customizable interface, the Web OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) offers convenient access to all system functions.

This software is installed on the network, which enables users to search through the collection from their own workstation as well as from the Information Office portal.

V-smart can be quickly deployed and easily maintained, which means there is more time for (individual) assistance to and services for library users.

With V-link, the Information Office offers a structured interface to search and access a variety of information resources and retrieve truly relevant search results. Users enjoy seamless access to a range of information resources such as journals, videos, books, audio etc. V-link is integrated in the Web OPAC search results. Users can select a search result in the Web OPAC and then click on the V-link icon. A

separate interface opens, enabling users to continue their search in library-defined resources. These resources may include subscription databases, search engines, etc.

Website and Information Office PortalPhysical libraries are more and more complemented with virtual spaces, known as E-library.

The challenge is to provide an environment where library-users can easily access the wide range of resources and materials without having to switch from one website to another or from the intranet to the Internet.

The Information Office of MSM is therefore planning to exceed its possibilities and options in a way that it supports learning and research and provides a flexible environment to access effectively and efficiently a wide range of (scholarly) resources, tutorials and tools to the MSM community on- and off-campus.

Therefore a portal offering access to the Information Office’s Web OPAC, databases as well as a wide range of dedicated websites is developed. This portal is accessible through a deep link (24/7) and directly through the desktops in the Information Office’s ICT-platform.

This portal meets the needs of the 21st century students and aligns with the advantages and demands of the participatory culture of Web 2.0. The aim is to use technology in a way that it supports and enhances learning and communication to fulfill a prominent role in the globalized world of business education.

13

Principle 4: ResearchWe will engage in conceptual and empirical research that advances our understanding about the role, dynamics, and impact of corporations in the creation of sustainable social, environmental and economic value.

Mission of the Research DepartmentResearch is an integral part of the mission of MSM. The Research Department, in collaboration with MSM Operations Department and in coordination with the Education and Projects and Consultancy Departments, steers and supports the research of Faculty and students to enable MSM to achieve its mission.

In doing so the Research Department aims to lead MSM to conduct, co-ordinate, commission, publish, apply and disseminate research that:

Add value to leaders, managers and entrepreneurs; that Inform organizational learning, social responsiveness and environmental sustainability; that Support policy makers to create and maintain supportive and competitive business conditions and

that Bridge the gap between applied research and decision-making.

Research Themes and Expertise ClustersOnly by a concentrated effort can a critical mass of scientific knowledge be built over time on which businesses, students, governments and other policy makers and decision takers can rely. Good management and good policy should be evidence-based. This requires rigorous research and continuous critical evaluation of received notions in business, development and policy making. In order to ensure that its research is concentrated, of high quality and will make the optimum impact, MSM’s research is focused around two themes. This focus ensures that the best synergy can be established in co-operative research between its Faculty members; that the research of Faculty and students can be better aligned; and that Faculty can develop and maintain recognition as experts in their respective fields.

The two research themes that MSM will focus on are:

1. Food and Water in Sustainable DevelopmentIssues of Food and Water will play an important – central – role in social and environmental sustainability. This is because agriculture is the primary sector wherein significant changes in products, productivity and governance are needed. Agriculture is not only important in providing food and water, and the incomes for billions of people to acquire these and other amenities, but has an impact on mitigation of and adaption of climate change, on land and water use and the efficiency of urbanisation, an on the manufacturing and services sectors.

Both social and environmental sustainability is under great pressure in the modern global economy. Rolling mass protests and civil conflict that has become a regular feature of the post global financial crisis world – from the Arab World to Sub-Saharan Africa, to Latin America, the United States and Europe – are

14

Page 15: Future Initiatives of MSM - PRME - Principles for ... · Web viewMaastricht School of Management (MSM) is joining forces with the Dutch institute for higher education and scientific

significant signs of a system that is not sustainable. It is not sustainable as it does not meet the needs of present generations. More than 1.4 billion people are still in extreme poverty; global income inequality is already high (the Gini-coefficient of income inequality between countries exceed 0.6) and rising; global wealth is even more unequally distributed (almost half of the richest 10 percent of adults in the world, who owes 85 percent of its wealth, lives in only two countries, the US and Japan).

2. Business, Innovation and Governance in Developing (and Fragile) countries.Business – particularly innovative businesses – has a vital role to play in developing and emerging economies. But business needs an appropriate environment to flourish, which in turn requires good governance. Good governance however, is endogenous, often the outcome of the activities of the businesses sector and its interaction with politics. Understanding how policies can improve businesses, the business environment and business-governance interactions requires a thorough understanding of the broad field of Private Sector Development (PrSD). Under this research theme, the promotion of private sector development in developing countries, and in particular the so-called fragile states, are studied.

PrSD is described by the OECD-DAC as cutting across many sectors and involving a wide range of public policies and institutions to promote the private sector in broad terms. Private sector development instruments includes measures aimed at business environment reform (BER), provision of business development services (BDS), support to value chain development (VCD), training and capacity building of entrepreneurs and managers, provision of credit and improvements in economic infrastructure. These initiatives are typically provided in a manner to further advance public-private partnerships (PPPs) and/or ethical business practices in developing countries. In recent years a growing interest has also been shown in social entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility (CSR), venture philanthropy and in aligning PrSD with ‘green growth’. In these, PrSD initiatives have been trying to come to terms with the major global development challenges to sustainable development.

Within these two research themes various projects, theses and dissertations resort. Each of these themes is approached from three Expertise Clusters (ECs):

These three Expertise Clusters are on:

The Innovating Organization The Trading Organization The Performing Organization

These three focus areas are supported by the Research Methods, Skills and Supervisory Support Cluster. Each focus area is co-ordinated by one of MSM’s Faculty members, and supported operationally and academically by research methods, skills and supervisory support cluster. The purpose of the latter is to ensure that cutting-edge research methods and skills are available to all faculty, partners and students at MSM, and that the supervisors of doctorate students are adequately supported and strengthened in their tasks, given that doctoral studies form an important and integral part of MSM. Doctoral students at MSM therefore focus their research largely on these three areas.

The scientific rationale for these focus areas are that, for an international business school with the majority of partners and students for emerging and developing countries, and emphasis on the core challenges facing managers in these societies are relevant. This is not to say however that we neglect the European and Dutch context: on the contrary, it is precisely our position in Maastricht, in the heart of

Europe that provides the raison d’être for the Institute as a bridge between business and management education across the continents.

Future Initiatives of MSMResearch is an integral part of the mission of MSM. MSM’s Research Department aims to lead MSM to conduct, co-ordinate, commission, publish, apply and disseminate research that

Principle 5: Partnership We will interact with managers of business corporations to extend our knowledge of their challenges in meeting social and environmental responsibilities and to explore jointly effective approaches to meeting these challenges.

MSM Partnership ProgramsThese are joint programs designed by Maastricht School of Management out of a constant aspiration to share our internationally accredited programs, multidisciplinary teaching methodology and flexible programs with partners all over the world.

In our ongoing efforts to make high-quality management education accessible to as many individuals as possible, we offer our MBA management training programs in localized regions throughout the world. The design of the MBA programs abroad enables participants to combine regular employment with MBA studies. To increase the value of these programs, we aim to give them region-specific characteristics.

cover subjects in the field of (Global) Social Responsibility and Sustainability. They have proven to be very popular among self-sponsored individuals who need to maintain regular employment to finance their management training. Our Executive MBA programs abroad are slower paced than the full-time MBA programs in Maastricht, lasting 18-24 months. This flexibility enables classes to be scheduled after working hours and during weekends. On successful completion of the program, the relevant MBA degree is awarded. Some degrees may be joint MBA degrees from MSM and its local partner institute, otherwise MSM awards its own degree. In total MSM offers in 20 different countries a MBA program.

Collaboration between Maastricht School of Management (Netherlands) and Maastricht University School of Business and EconomicsMSM has started a collaborative MBA in September 2014 with Maastricht University School of Business and Economics. The so-called Maastricht MBA combines the capabilities of MSM and SBE. The MBA will have two variants: a part-time executive programme and a full-time residential programme.

Alumni Refresher Courses Maastricht School of Management (MSM) organizes short 2 week Refresher Courses for its Alumni in their home countries or in the region. The Netherlands Fellowship Program (NFP) funds these courses.

The aim of the Refresher Courses is to prolong the effectiveness of earlier training. Refresher Courses also enable Alumni to renew contacts and expand their network. Refresher courses target Alumni who completed NFP-funded training or education at least two years before the planned starting date of the Refresher Course.

Refresher Course Morocco for NFP and MENA alumni

Maastricht School of Management (MSM) is joining forces with the Dutch institute for higher education and scientific research (NIMAR) in Rabat, and the Abdelmalek Essaadi University (UAE) in Tangier, to organize the NFP/MENA Refresher Course “Project Management and Sustainable Management” on 13 – 22 October 2014.

Efficient and effective project management is vital both for infrastructural and human capacity development in emerging economies. In Morocco, and indeed the MENA region as a whole, the design and development of projects that generate employment and income, improve health and school attendance are primary goals shared by many stakeholders in public and private sectors as well as civil society. More than 50% of the MENA region, for example, are younger than 25; this provides many challenges, such as how to create sufficient jobs and opportunities for the youth and how to retain talents in the region.

MSM feels that now is an appropriate time for a course on Project Management and Sustainable Development in the region and has chosen Morocco as a fitting host location. Alumni living in the region and who attended programs at MSM or other Dutch institutes are often involved in projects in their daily work. The course aims to empower participants to build their practical competences as project managers, and also to provide them with the tools and skills to empower others to do so as well.

The focus on individual and practical application of theory, tools and skills is very much in line with the conclusions of the 2008 World Bank study on education in the Middle East whereby more practically-orientated training rather than traditional classroom instruction was seen to be required.

Why this program?Recognizing that strategic tools cannot be learned from theory alone, the course is highly interactive with a strong emphasis on application. Participants are constantly challenged to apply different concepts and tools to case assignments and their own individual situation, to think about the role played by different stakeholders in project management in their own countries, and to understand how they can influence the current debates and economic priorities in the region. In light of recent developments, critical and creative analytical minds are needed to provide direction for the future.

Entrepreneurship in MENA regionMSM has decided, after consulting with Nuffic and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to move the location of the refresher course “Entrepreneurship in MENA region” in Oman to Morocco. Due to these unforeseen developments MSM has extended the deadline for applying to the course with a period of one month. Alumni from the region who meet the admission requirements can still apply for this course before 1 July 2014 by sending an email with their details to [email protected]. Selection of participants will be finalized before the end of July.

In many emerging economies with very young populations, entrepreneurship is viewed as a catalyst for economic development. Various stakeholders have recognized the importance of promoting entrepreneurship through (policy) interventions, with mixed results. On micro level, aspiring entrepreneurs still struggle to overcome the barriers to establishing their businesses, such as limited access to finance or to business development services. They often miss the competences to translate their ideas into valid business models and business plans.

This course focuses on helping aspiring entrepreneurs to deal with these challenges and assists them in formulating solid business plans. The course also examines the different definitions of entrepreneurship and potential (policy) interventions of different stakeholders (such as the business community).

Future Initiatives of MSM Start up of a new MBA Program in Czech Republic in collaboration with CMC Graduate School of

Business. In the near future partnership programs will also be rolled out in India, the Fiji Islands, Malta, and

Chile. Executive Programs abroad.

In addition to our high-quality management degree programs, MsM also offers a wide selection of short certificate and diploma-based executive programs, as well as tailor-made programs. Whilst these programs have mostly taken place in Maastricht, we are increasingly being approached by partner organizations seeking to implement these programs in other countries. As an international organization, we are experienced in working with partner organizations on a flexible, mutually beneficial basis on the design and delivery of management and executive training. Such training can be based on our existing portfolio of open executive programs, or can be tailor-made. In the future MsM wants to implement several Executive Programs abroad in collaboration with partner schools.

Global Business, Emerging Markets and Human Rights: Old Concerns or Fresh Hopes?

5 September 2014, Maastricht, The Netherlands

BackgroundThe dominance of multinational enterprises and the influence of local business elites has been a cause of concern in some circles, whilst in others they have been praised as innovative engines of the ‘entrepreneurial economy’. Today, in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, and amidst an economic boom of many emerging and developing economies, the schism between the optimists and the pessimists seem greater than ever. Can global business and the growing number of entrepreneurs in emerging countries indeed rid the world of absolute poverty in the near future as some business leaders predict? Or will collusion between business and political elites, and the availability of new powerful surveillance technology, rob people across the world of their basic human rights, and herald in a new era of feudalism? Will the economic decline of Western democracies see a sell-out of their commitment to human rights? Or will we see a resurgence of business ethics, good global corporate leadership and the adoption of more shared value approaches? These and related topics will be explored at this research conference of the Maastricht School of Management, organized in co-operation with the School of Business and Economics and the Law Faculty at Maastricht University.

Themes New technologies, big data, privacy, industrial espionage and the suppression of human rights: can

global businesses avoid complicity? Human rights and multinational enterprises: trends, patterns, policies and international law. The relevance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in emerging markets. Social entrepreneurship vs public entrepreneurship in global development. Income and wealth inequalities and the role of big business. Global value chains and human rights based development.22

International Workshop on Migrants: Transnational Entrepreneurs or Entrepreneurial Refugees?30 May 2013

Maastricht School of Management, Maastricht University and UNU-MERIT together organize an international workshop on

Migrants: Transnational Entrepreneurs or Entrepreneurial Refugees?

When: 30-31 May 2013

Venue: Maastricht School of Management, Maastricht, the Netherlands

Background:Ever since modern humans migrated from Africa about 130,000 years ago, migrant flows have had a defining impact in shaping the human geography of the modern world. Migration continues to shape contemporary events and debates, and has in recent years been prominent in the media, in policy making and in the academic literature in the aftermaths of the global financial crisis, the Arab Spring, the greying of European and Chinese populations, and following a growing number of climate change fuelled natural disasters.

In order to better inform the debates on these issues, a fresh look is needed – particularly into the relationship between migration and entrepreneurship. Despite the antagonism towards migration in many countries, rising tides of xenophobia, and challenges of assimilation of immigrant communities in many places, it remains widely recognized that migrants can contribute to the economic growth of both their host country and their country of origin in many ways. However, the focus in the literature and policy debates to date has primarily been on migrant workers, and, as such, migrants’ entrepreneurial activities have received limited attention. There is, however, evidence that migrants are more likely to become entrepreneurs than natives in the host country. Migrant entrepreneurship is not solely comprised of traditional ethnic businesses, but is present in a wide range of sectors. This has led to recognition of transnational entrepreneurship as a potentially important determinant of development and growth. Transnational entrepreneurs often have a unique position in the home country because they have the 23

Page 24: Future Initiatives of MSM - PRME - Principles for ... · Web viewMaastricht School of Management (MSM) is joining forces with the Dutch institute for higher education and scientific

possibility to accumulate financial, human and social capital abroad and utilize them in their country of origin. This is particularly true for the small and medium sized businesses sector and, therefore, migrants have the potential to help develop domestic markets. On the other hand however, the survival rate of these immigrant businesses are often low and many migrants are considered to be entrepreneurial refugees and in self-employment – and often illegal or informal activities – out of necessity rather than choice. The number of persons employed by transnational entrepreneurs or entrepreneurial refugees is substantial. These potential roles of migrants justify a fresh look and make this an important area for further research.

In light of this, the Maastricht School of Management and the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance are organizing a two-day workshop to review the state of the art with regard to the relationship between migration and entrepreneurship. One day of the workshop will be dedicated to migrant entrepreneurs in the host country and the second to return migrants or transnational entrepreneurs in the home country.

Workshop topics include What do we know about the role of migrant entrepreneurs in economic growth and development? What are the determinants of migrant entrepreneurship? How can host and home country policies encourage migrant entrepreneurs or promote the benefits of

migrant entrepreneurs? How do migrant entrepreneurs overcome obstacles in their host countries, and what lessons can be

learned from successful cases? What does the rising number of field experiments tell us about migrant entrepreneurship? When and how can migrant entrepreneurship lead to unproductive and destructive activities? How does migrant entrepreneurship differ between regions and countries? What are the relationships between migrant entrepreneurship, international trade and investment

flows? Is migration from the Middle East a viable solution to re-energize stagnant European labour markets

and small business sectors? Can the African Diaspora be a catalyst for entrepreneurial development in the continent?

BackgroundThe role of women entrepreneurs in economic growth and social change continues to dominate recent policy debates on development. But, how does women’s entrepreneurship fuel social and economic development, including job creation and gender equality? What is known about the impact and effects of women entrepreneurship promotion (WEP) policies and support programs? How can private sector and public policy contribute to successful women’s entrepreneurship? Moreover, which WEP policies and practices are sustainable and create inclusive growth and development?

GoalThese and related topics will be explored at this international policy & research seminar of the Maastricht School of Management, organized in co-operation with the Maastricht Centre for Entrepreneurship (MC4E) at the University of Maastricht. The main goal of this event is to co-create knowledge and expertise that can feed joint learning, innovative practices and evidence-based policymaking for successful women’s entrepreneurship promotion and gender-just inclusive growth.

Themes Policies and practices for women entrepreneurship promotion: evidence of impact? Private sector development programs: best practices and instruments that work for women

entrepreneurs Empowering women entrepreneurs in the value-chain: best practices and challenges Women’s entrepreneurship promotion in conflict zones Feminist perspectives on entrepreneurship: its potential for transformative economies What works? Public and private collaboration and market driven practices for women’s

entrepreneurship promotion. Measuring policy impact on gender justice and inclusive growth: what is the return of investing in

women entrepreneurs?
