Originally from Russia, Evgeny Chebykin joined SACB in late 2011 as a French Horn Player after moving to Australia from London. His musical studies were at the Royal Academy of Music during which time he was awarded many prizes including the Dennis Brain horn prize. Prior to his time at RAM, Evgeny was a student at the prestigious Purcell School of Music.

As an accomplished horn soloist, Evgeny has performed concerti by Mozart, Strauss and Bainbridge and has performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta as well as many television and movie credits including the sound track for the last two Harry Potter movies. Closer to home, Evgeny played in the orchestra pit for the Melbourne production of Love Never Dies.

Evgeny was invited to take on the position of assistant conductor of SACB at the beginning of 2012.

Fiona McKellar began her musical studies at Warrnambool's Brauer College in Year 7, ending up with the clarinet after arriving at the meeting late when all of the flute spots had already been filled. She began to play saxophone later in high school so that she could join the jazz band, and continued her clarinet studies at Monash University, studying with Peter Handsworth, Robert Schubert and Ian Morgan whilst undertaking her BMus.

She is currently enjoying making music with lots of different groups- taking 'Mini Music' classes at the Camberwell Salvo's Music Academy, taking the Training Band as well as teaching clarinet and saxophone at Blackburn Primary School, and playing with Oakleigh City Brass, Manningham Concert Band and CLASAX Clarinet Choir in addition to being an Assistant Musical Director for the Southern Area Training Band.

  • Meet our Music Director

Darryn Wright has been a member of Southern Area Concert Band since 1998, originally joining the band as an alto saxophone player. After ten years as the President of the band, he moved into the role of Music Director at the end of 2006 following Craig Seymour’s retirement.

Darryn has been playing music (keyboard) since the age of five, studied flute in high school under the tutorage of Gerard Van Der Geer, and has been playing saxophone for nearly 20 years.

Darryn has performed in many instrumental and choral ensembles throughout Melbourne and has been involved with many amateur and school musical stage productions. In August this year, Darryn undertook the role of Musical Director for Brentwood Secondary College’s successful production of West Side Story.

    Meet our Conductors

Jenny Corcoran joined the Southern Area Concert Band as a young trumpeter in 2004. Having completed the ABODA conducting school in 2009, Jenny took on the role of Assistant Conductor of SACB in 2010.

At the beginning of 2011, Jenny joined the Southern Area Training Band team and was promoted into the role of main conductor of

SATB at the end of the year. Jenny has actively been involved in musical endeavours her whole life; she joined her first choir at age 5, began piano lessons at age 8, and later took up the trumpet at the age of 13. Jenny completed a double degree in Arts/Music in 2010, majoring in classical trumpet performance and French studies. Jenny completed her Graduate Diploma of Education in music at Monash University in 2011 and is currently working as a Music and French teacher for the Victorian Catholic Education Department.

    PART II

Southern Area Combined Band • Oye Como Va — Composed in 1963 by Latin Jazz

musician Tito Puente and popularized by Santana in 1970. Colloquially meaning “How’s it going”, today’s performance will be conducted by Jenny Corcoran.

    • Circus Marchimus — Australian composer Brian West played trombone as a junior musician, and has always enjoyed the spirit of the traditional march. This original work captures the feel of a traditional march and will be conducted today by Jenny Corcoran.

    • Quinque — Being Latin for “five”, Johnnie Vinson has scored this piece in 5/4 time giving a dance-like quality with lots of variety in the scoring. Today’s performance will be conducted by Evgeny Chebykin.

    • Toys Awakening — Inspired by a group of very young primary school children, David Jones’ composition tells the story of the toys coming to life at night after the lights are turned out. The toys can often be quite noisy, but no matter how quickly you turn on the light they never get caught! Today’s performance will be conducted by Fiona McKellar.

    • Pirates of the Caribbean — With music by Klaus Badelt, this Michael Sweeney arrangement of music from the 2003 Disney film captures the dramatic and exciting main themes used in the film. Today’s performance will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

    • It Don’t Mean a Thing — Written in 1931 during intermissions at Chicago’s Lincoln Tavern by Duke Ellington, this tune has become a standard in the jazz repertoire. Today’s arrangement by Eric Osterling will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

    PART III

    Southern Area Concert Band

    • With My Swag — Composed by Sean Thorne in 1988 as the overture to the Australian Bicentennial Military Tattoo. It is based on the Australian folk tune which has origins in both Ireland and America and will be conducted today by Darryn Wright.

    • Children’s March — Composed by Australian composer Percy Grainger between 1916 and 1919. Although the melody is folk-like in character, the musical content of this spirited work is entirely original. Today’s performance will be conducted by Jenny Corcoran.

    • Lord of the Rings (The fellowship of the Ring) — Vivid musical imagery permeates this wonderful arrangement of selections from the Academy Award-winning Howard Shore film score. Today’s performance will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

    • Les Miserables — With music composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg in 1985, Les Miserables played its ten-thousandth performance at Queen’s Theatre on London’s West End. Today’s medley is arranged by Warren Barker and conducted by Darryn Wright.

    • Porgy and Bess — With music by George Gershwin, the opera Porgy and Bess was first performed in 1935 with an entire cast of African-American classically trained singers. Today’s medley is arranged by Bob Lowden and will be conducted by Evgeny Chebykin.

    • The Final Voyage — On September 8, 1860 the lumber ship Augusta rammed the luxury liner Lady Elgin off the shores of Lake Michigan. Although hundreds perished in the event, many acts of heroism took place during the rescue effort. Robert Sheldon has written this memorial to those heroes, which will be conducted by Darryn Wright.

    • Matador — Born in 1930, John Cacavas has been writing music for stage, screen, television, orchestra and band alike since the age of 13. He composed Matador in 1955 with a distinctly Spanish feel. Today’s performance will be conducted by Darryn Wright, and as one of his personal favourites, will be dedicated to Craig Seymour.

We trust that you have enjoyed this afternoon’s entertainment and ask that you would please take a few moments to fill out our performance questionnaire. The information we gain from these surveys is treated confidentially and allows us to continuously improve the program which we deliver to you, our valued audience.

Vale Craig Seymour (28/9/1950—26/8/2012) It is with great sadness and much respect that the band remembers Craig’s passing on August 26th.

Craig was one of SACB’s founding members fulfilling the role of Music Director for 30 years up until his retirement in 2005. Craig presided over the band in the 1980s and 1990s, where the band had up to 70 members, and enjoyed considerable success in both state and national competitions.

Craig was honoured with life membership of SACB in 1986 and ultimately with the title of Emeritus Music Director for his years of service to the band and community music. As a respected music educator and musician, the effect of Craig’s influence on people’s lives will never be fully appreciated.

    May you Rest in Peace,
