By now, we will have featured the 30 Under 30 designers that recently partook in the last ARISE Fashion Week 2020. Next week, we will dedicate a

special edition to the event. This week, we decided to go down memory lane and showcase some of the collections displayed on our platform over the years. From Lagos to Abuja all the way to South Africa, New York, England and France, the ARISE Fashion Week brand has featured most of Africa’s brightest stars. Over the years while putting the Africa narrative on the global stage we have also featured many global artistes

through their musical performances on our platform not to mention world renowned designers cladding our African models in their creations.

The models here have also had the opportunity to model alongside supermodels from various parts of the world. ARISE has also launched many

modeling careers because of the global exposure they got from gracing our catwalks. Designers have also raised their ante with the business opportunities provided

them from their exposure and mileage gotten from the ARISE brand. This giant leap is by no means a small feat in their various careers. It is opportunities like this that give ARISE Fashion Week the ultimate pleasure. Knowing that directly or indirectly, we have played a small role in harnessing the talents of both model and designer makes all the sweat of our ‘back story’ well worth it. The world is a large space and anything done to celebrate our talents within to global recognition is a milestone.

Looking back to when we started and where we are today gives one so much joy. When l looked back with nostalgia, l was happy to see how long and interesting the journey has been thus far. It makes one proud to see how far the fashion industry has also grown and is still growing. We hope to see more growth in future and a great expansion of the business here in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. We are grateful that the continent now has a strong voice amongst the global players in the industry.

As part of preparations for its upcoming event, ARISE FASHION WEEK hosted select media personalities and social media influencers to a high style laid back brunch at Circa Non-Pareil, Lekki, Lagos.

After a welcome address, Ruth Osime gave guests a brief rundown on what to expect at the event.

With the theme ‘30 under 30: The New Stars,’ this years’ edition will mark the first time the fashion event is awarding monetary prizes to designers.

“The whole idea is to help assist young designers in building their brands. We need a breath of fresh air. We need younger people to get into this space and be given the accreditation they certainly deserve.” - Ruth Osime

A total of $500,000 will be awarded to the designers whose creative works will be judged based on aesthetics, presentation and market value.

The prizes will be awarded on the third and final day of the event, Saturday, December 12.

The event will be virtual and broadcast to a worldwide audience on the new ARISEPLAY streaming service and other ARISE/THISDAY platforms.

Notable names on the runway include Naomi Campbell, Alpha Dia and Alton Mason. Also expected as judges are Reni Folawiyo, Kehinde Wiley, Mobolaji Dawodu, Niyi Okuboyejo and Odion Oseni.

The Women at Risk International Foundation launched the No Tolerance Campaign last year to address the prevalence of violence against girls and women in communities across Nigeria. Nigeria responded and our citizens across the country stood with WARIF to say “No Tolerance” to rape and sexual violence and the digital campaign reached an estimate of 10 million people on social media.

Following the on-going success of the campaign and the dire need for more awareness on issues of sexual violence, over the annual 16 Days of Activism to highlight gender based violence globally, the maiden edition of the No Tolerance March was carried out in December 2019.

This year, following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2ND annual #WARIFNoTolerance March held on Saturday December 05, went online and was followed by all! Participants, friends, survivors and supporters of WARIF were encouraged to come out alone or with their friends and family bubble; wearing their No Tolerance T-shirts and to march, jog, walk or run anywhere of their choice- at home, on the bridge or in the streets to raise awareness to sexual violence and to stay connected with pictures and videos posted. Notable advocates and celebrities like Kate Henshaw, WARIF Ambassadors Temi Otedola and Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD), Rita Dominic, Chioma Akpotha, Chigul ; Denola Grey. Fashion designers Folake Coker, Lisa Folawiyo, Tola Adegbite and Adebayo Oke-Lawal were also among those who joined the organization to take a stand against rape and sexual violence this year.

Azuri Towers, the flagship development of Eko Development Company FZE, scheduled for opening in December 2021, will be the tallest residential tower at 145m high in West Africa and the second building (second only to the NECOM House) in Nigeria. Azuri Towers comprise Two Residential Towers and an Office Tower and sit facing the Marina, in the Marina District of Eko Atlantic City.

The Towers are being constructed by ITB, one of the foremost construction companies in Nigeria. The Residential Towers are named Azuri One and Azuri Two. Azuri One is the more luxurious of the two towers with fewer number of apartments. The Office Tower is solely commercial.

The Marina which can hold up to 350 small yachts/boats was opened on Saturday 21st November 2020 when Azuri Towers played host to members of the boating community in Lagos, specifically Lagos Motorboat Club (LMBC) and Bras Marine. The boats sailing on the Marina was a sight to behold. This is just one of the many benefits that will accrue to residents at the Azuri.

The event was also used as an avenue to present the show apartment. The 4-bedroom 501m2 at Azuri ONE. The leg traffic to the show apartment has been unprecedented and the feedback from the viewers of the show apartment based on the architectural design, finishing, furniture and luxury on display has been nothing but encouraging for the developers not to fall short of the standards on display.

“I have lived sir, a long time and the longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth that God governs the affairs of men” Benjamin Franklin

As I perch on the edge of my thoughts, different things keep swivelling around my mind, wondering how things went this way south in the world....

What a year, one so dark that it felt like the angels were on strike and allowed the fallen ones to take over. This year reintroduced the essence of purpose and the fact that we are all pilgrims on this earth, we are all passing through. This was a year that witnessed the earth vandalised, souls mutilated and dreams burnt to ashes, many rushed to eternity as if they were been chased.

The year started with great expectations despite the grim colour given to leap years, but as it unfolded the pandemic came calling, the drought of resources sat squarely, crazy panic as people began to drop like flies and the entire world was on lockdown, it seemed surreal that an entire world could be held to ransom by a virus. Many began to see that indeed they are not in charge and that there is indeed a higher power, others who were already powered by him began to doubt, wondering how the Creator who loves us so much could allow for us to be besieged without recourse.

Depression befriended many as they could not see beyond the pain, trusted institutions were pushed to their elastic limit by clowns, each month wore a different colour of darkness though light continued to pierce it.

The year 2020 reminded one of a design in crisis, reason resigned, power unpowered as many wandered around it as if in a maze clueless.

Why did we not see this coming, why did we not anticipate this since we are so clever, we read about what happened in Babel and still did not understand, we read about what happened with Jonah and we decided it was a myth, we read about what happened with Noah and refused to believe it could be real, we read about Sodom and Gomorrah and labelled it fiction, we went further to study the 10 commandments and rolling in laughter tagged it as the 10 suggestions for daily living. We toyed with grace and befriended inanity, we flagrantly disregarded everything that meant anything and expected to walk in the realm of the miraculous in the day of trouble.

We thank the Potter for his mercy because despite ourselves he is carrying us through, despite the constant knocking and mocking by his creation, he has held us tight, indeed who is man that he is mindful of us...

How can a people get it so wrong and love the constant swim in the miry clay like this, how can we not know that when you roll with pigs it affects your mien.

It’s time for us to dig our roots deep in the soil of God’s unending grace whilst embracing obedience because this journey is ours to throw or define, we throw it when we allow everything around us control us, we define it by giving the wheel to our Maker. It is time to junk the trash because it has a tendency to ruin everything else when allowed to pervade.

We need to become heaven focused by opening accounts in heaven that we daily credit with our acts of kindness, we must as a matter of urgency redirect our steps to align with Gods’s purpose. God is not one to give up on his own even if he has to put us on our back so that we can look up. He deliberately stopped the rat race we were running to give our souls rest and set us up for a reset, a reboot. Churches could not function so we sought him ourselves without the middleman, a communion he had always longed for, so many things that we thought we could not do without we did without. How can anyone say God is not involved in the affairs of man? How can anyone still question the trajectory of life given what happened this year. In retrospect looking at all that the year unfolded, it will be a relief to fold it back and post it to posterity. Many through the year sought a place they could shout, a place to unburden themselves but alas even this did not bring relief, it was that kind of year. Time to face our demons and win people. We must not let all that this year birth into our reality discourage us, we need to connect with divinity and impugn all orchestrated distractions as we traverse. Here and now is no coincidence, we are here for a reason and in season, we will understand. Going back to the original setting can be harrowing but in the process comes renewal.

We have overcome and despite the market noise and the naysayers it will end in praise.

GUIDE TOMEN STYLE

Tall men are often perceived as authoritative and attractive. And you’d admit, nailing that perfect

suited up look is much easier when you’ve got a few extra inches on your side. But the good news is you

don’t have to be tall to look the part. Whether you’re a short guy wanting to add some inches or a tall one wanting to appear a bit taller, a few smart styling tips are all you need! Here’s your set of ultimate

solutions to looking taller. Take a cue and amplify your dapper dressing sense.

Well-Fitted Clothing

Snug and form-fitting clothes make you appear taller, it’s true! Don’t forget that well-fitted garments

are also a sign of refinement and elegance. Stay away from baggy

pants and loose shirts as they can make you look short and stocky,

unless of course you have the right

height to pull it off! Model for KIMONO-

KOLLECTION

Monochrome LookAdding to the illusion of a taller frame is easier when you’re sporting one colour or pattern from head to toe. Monochrome dressing creates that straight vertical alignment, A taller and leaner look. The idea is to avoid breaking the body line with large patterns and prints. Model for LAURENCE AIRLINE

Zero Chunky

Accessories Streamlining your

look by skipping all the bells and whistles is one way to creating

a taller and leaner look. Avoid wearing

any eye-catching accessories as it breaks

the impression of an elongated frame.

Steer clear of chunky watches, wide ties, and

belts for men that will interfere with the slick silhouette that you’re

looking to achieve. Model for ROBERT

CAVALLI

Vertical Stripes

The rule of wearing vertical stripes has been reinstated time

and again and this may just be the perfect time to

flaunt the trend! It’s amongst the

easiest ways to add length to your

frame; so, wield out those striped men’s shorts, all-striped pantsuits and tees. It’s time

they reclaimed their spot in your

wardrobe. And, avoid horizontal

stripes at all costs as they defeat the

purpose! Model for KENNETH-IZE

Short Works

Longer shirts and jackets

for men could make you

look bulky, as though you are

wearing the wrong size. A

shorter shirt or jacket, on the

other hand, will add proportion and balance to

your silhouette. Styling this

way enhances your stature

and gives you a taller

look. Model for OZWALD

BY USIADE ISIOMA

Recap and vital statistics:I am 5 feet and 10 inches

tall and 61 years old. I was an effortlessly super-slim 70kg till my late 40s, then the weight started to pile on. By my early 50s, I was 85kg. But I didn’t become obese till my mid-50s.

I started this battle of the bulge on March 16th, when I weighed a whopping 120kg and measured 49-47-51 (chest-waist-hips) inches. And I’ve been struggling to shed the excess lard since then.

I was at my happiest and most elegant when I was 70kg and a size 10 (UK sizing). But I think that a woman of my current advanced age will look haggard – ill/starved even - in a totally fat-free body zone…and that a bit of genteel padding does a sexuagenarian no harm.

So, since I didn’t feel or look too bad when I was 85kg and a size 14, that’s the compromise I am aiming for. And it’s been a yo-yo ride.

My weight has, alas, fluctuated since I started this journey. I’ve had weeks when I’ve lost a couple of kilos, weeks when I’ve regained every lost kilo and weeks when I haven’t gained or lost an ounce.

At one point in the summer, my weight dropped to 106kg, but it had crept back up to 115kg by early November. So I tried fasting, on and off, and re-established a downward trajectory on the fatness front.

By last Sunday, I weighed 112kg. But gloominess about the appalling state of the world and Nigeria (covid, recession, grisly murders in Borno) prevented me from enjoying my revived ability to control my weight; and I told you that I was considering the possibility of cheering myself up by starting Festive Season celebrations early.

Having been stuck in Abuja all year, I planned to travel to London for an extended Christmas break last week; and I toyed with the idea of temporarily suspending my diet programme until January lst…so I could merrily embark on a huge eating/drinking binge as soon as I gained access to London’s wonderful restaurants and food shops.

Two things prevented me from acting on my desire to totally abandon discipline for most of December:

Firstly, I couldn’t travel last week and am now scheduled to arrive in London much closer to Christmas. Secondly, a ThisDay reader called Jide emailed me to sternly advise me against recklessness:

It seems you’ve given up on the weight loss battle.

You already listed excuses why you have to binge when you travel and have not mentioned any plans to exercise to mitigate the binging spree. What about taking walks during your holidays? I started walking in November 2019 when I was 95kg with a distended belly. Lost some weight but fell ill with a Covid 19 infection. I was in isolation for 2weeks. Since I recovered in early June, I have intensified my walking. Did about 20,000 steps this morning. I now weigh between 82kg.

I still binge on chocolates and all what nots. But I always pick myself up every morning and just walk. Giving up is not an option.

I found Jide’s email inspiring. It was a welcome kick up the backside at a time when I was tempted to undo my achievements by eating like a pig and drinking like a fish for 3 solid weeks.

Even when I twisted my ankle and couldn’t do any walking at all, I kept my eye on the glittering prizes – slimness, fitness and self-esteem! – that I will win if I ditch the dangerous obesity that is literally bogging me down and messing up my health on many levels.

And I have been doing other types of exercise – stretching, dumbell-lifting - that burn calories, tone muscles, strengthen

my entire body and generate the miracles that are mood-boosting endorphins without requiring me to put pressure on the damaged foot.

I keep reminding myself that where there is a will, there is a way…and that if Paralympians who lack limbs or are disabled in various other ways can embrace physical activity with a vigour that puts most able-bodied folks to shame, I have no excuse for allowing a mere twisted ankle to make me a sluggish couch potato.

So, instead of dragging myself back to Square One last week by abandoning all self-restraint, I’m quietly forging ahead.

Yes, I’ve lapsed – I won’t tell you how many slices of cake I had on one fateful day that I’m desperately trying to forget about and forgive myself for! But I’ve done quite well overall for the past week by exercising and avoiding insane gluttony/boozing most of the time.

And when I eventually get to London, I will indulge myself in British culinary delights, but only to some extent. And, with any luck, I’ll be lighter on January lst than I am now. Or at least, no heavier!!!

AccessoriesEvery woman deserves to feel like the queen she is. And hair accessories can help you feel just that! There is a vast range of them for you to choose from no matter what the occasion! They are a great way to add some pizzazz to your hairstyle. Long gone are the days when hair accessories were just for kids. Here are a few tips to have in mind when picking one for yourself.

OIL-BASED CLEANSERS ARE YOUR FRIENDSIn most cases, plain old water won’t cut it when it comes to removing makeup. “More and more makeup formulas are formulated to be long-wearing nowadays so in order to remove makeup, you’ll need to dissolve it properly. Using an oil-based cleanser is the best first step to effectively cleansing skin. Dissolving long-wearing cosmetics like waterproof mascaras and foundation will help alleviate irritation due to excess rubbing and scrubbing. Sit back and let the oil do all the work, then follow with your favorite cleanser.

COCONUT OIL WORKS WONDERSIt’s true, coconut oil is a powerhouse ingredient and works wonders on our skin, too.

THE RIGHT WAY TO REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP

BY ISIOMA USIADE

THE BOWThe bow has been a hair accessory way before Minnie Mouse even came into the picture. You can get ribbons to tie a bow on your hair. You also get bows with soft Velcro on them, which you can just attach it to your hairand you are good to go!

HAIR COMB PINHair comb pins have been around for decades, dating as far back as the Stone age. Yes, women had a fashion sense even back then! Hair comb pins are exceedingly elegant and can take your hairdo to a whole new level.

THE HAIR CLIPSHair clips are the first accessories one thinks

of when we need to add just a bit of sass to our hairdo. There is a huge variety

of hair accessories to choose from like barrettes, flat clips, banana clips,

duckbill clips, and many more.

HAIR BANDSIt’s a huge misconception that hairbands are only for children. Why, these

days even men are sporting them! With a wide variety of

different styles to choose from, we guarantee you will find what

you’re looking for.

FLOWERSNothing makes a woman feel

prettier than flowers. Whether it’s a real flower, artificial flower or a rhinestone flower, it’s sure to spruce up your look.

THE PEARLSPearls are fast becoming one of the

most classy hair accessories of all time. Remember that pearl necklace you bought but the

hooks came off? Well, now you can use that as an accessory to make

your bun look even more dashing!

HATSHats are not just for when you have a bad hair day or have to meet the British royals. Hats can be used to add some mystery to your overall ensemble. Try a veil hat if you are looking for something simple yet enigmatic.

SCARFSWhat can’t scarves do? They protect your face from the heat, add oomph to your outfit, and now they are here to rock your hair!

TIARAYou know you feel like a complete princess while wearing that crown. You can find a range of sophisticated tiaras to wear. Whether it’s for your wedding day or a party, we guarantee you can find an elegant tiara that is not OTT and childish, but will bring out the queen in you.

Hair

OVAL FACEIf your face shape is oval, consider it a blessing! All hair accessories look good on this face shape.

ROUND FACEIf you have a round face, then you need to make sure the hair accessory you pick will not make your face appear rounder. The key is to add length to your face. Also, allow a few strands of hair to fall on your face as it will help in face framing.

HEART FACEIf you have a heart-shaped face, then try hair comb pins or simple hairpins on one side of your head. This accessory will frame your face nicely as one side of your hair will be left loose. When using hairbands, add height to your hair at the top or leave a few strands loose rather than pushing your hair back entirely.

LONG FACEHaving a long face is not bad. With the right accessories, you can focus on specific facial features. Take the headband for example. A headband will make your forehead seem smaller while diverting attention to your eyes.

SQUARE FACEWith a square face, make sure that whatever the hair accessory, your hair should be pulled back tightly.

Jeans are possibly the most popular trouser in the world. Jeans are the perfect pair of pants for the outdoors, running errands, casual get-togethers, and very casual office settings. They have a rich

history, but navigating today’s world of ripped, faded and embellished jeans to find a pair that suits classic yet modern tastes

can be tough. Here is a guide to all you need to know about jeans and how you can style

yours effortlessly.

JEANS AFFAIRS;

BY USIADE ISIOMA

Denim DO’s and DON’TsDO hem denim to the correct length.DO pinroll jeans to wear them with boots or in warm weatherDO consider when denim is appropriate to wear. If you feel like a little polish is good for the occasion, then err on the side of dressier pants such as chinos.DON’T feel you need to have many different cuts and washes of denim. Find a good style that suits your body type, buy two washes, and enjoy them.DON’T buy or wear ripped, torn, overly faded or otherwise wildly embellished jeans – these are short-lived trends that guarantee you will have to replace them soonDON’T keep and wear jeans forever. Since styles change, a deeply faded, broken in pair of jeans in an old cut will make you look dated. Wear newer pairs out and about and save your trusty old jeans for painting and

yard work.

Buying Mistakes to AvoidIt’s important to take a few extra minutes in that fitting room and make sure you’re not seeing some issues arise.

Too Much DetailsA small or subtle amount of distressing in a casual outfit is acceptable from time to time, however, wearing jeans with exceptionally large holes, distressing, and strange designs are wholly unacceptable for a business setting. Fit Is Too TightYou don’t want to overemphasize certain areas of your body. Watch out for pull lines, aggressive pattern twisting, and pocket outlines on your thighs, these are all red flags that if you see them happening in the mirror, you should either try a different size or a different fit altogether. Jeans that are too tight will be uncomfortable and are going to be more prone to tearing. Bending over to tie your shoe and having your pants ripped should be saved for a comedy sketch, not real life.

Fit Is Too LooseEven if it cost you a pretty penny to purchase, ill-fitting jeans that are too loose will look sloppy and look like you did not add too much effort into your outfit that day. If your body type requires that you wear a looser fit, go ahead and wear them. However, wearing loose clothing just for the sake of wearing loose clothing will make you appear sloppy and dwarfed by the garments themselves.

How to Style JeansDenim is a decidedly casual garment. The darker the (blue) denim, the dressier it is. The less distressed or faded the denim, the dressier it is.For a classic look to pair with sweaters or a blazer, look for mid-rise jeans in a dark wash with no fading in a slim or straight cut with a half-break at the hem at the most. Pair this look with boots or pointy shoes. Avoid pairing denim with black shoes, belts, jackets or sweaters, since the colour is far too formal for denim. For a classic casual look with polos, choose the same cut with some slight fading, a mid-blue wash or darker and either no break or an

ankle/pinrolled length to pair with sneakers.

Caring for your Denim JeansRecently, the CEO of Levi’s claimed that you don’t need to wash your jean ever. Despite his claim, this is a very personal decision. If you are a denim enthusiast that prefers to start with raw denim and break them in naturally, then not washing your denim may make sense for you. However, you can wash your jeans as often as you deem necessary for your own comfort. They may age a little faster, but that is a reasonable trade-off for many. Like any trouser, you want to rotate between pairs, but the truth is that the only way to achieve what experts call a ‘perfect’ pair of jeans is by regular wear. Of course, this means keeping work-pants separate from your fashionable jeans.

BY USIADE ISIOMA

Bobbi Brown skin long-wear fluid powder foundation SPF 20This new foundation is Bobbi Brown’s first ever liquid to powder foundation, which self-sets for a soft matte finish. The weightless formula feels great when applied and wears nicely. Despite being infused with 15 per cent powders, it doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry and cakey, which makes it a great option for people who usually stay away from matte formulas for this very reason. It gives a natural and polished look to the skin, feeling comfortable and lasting all day long. Available in 28 shades.

Nars natural radiant Longwear foundationThis new lightweight foundation gives 16 hours of fade resistant wear with a whisper light texture. This is great for a natural fresh dewy finish. Available in 33 shades.

Hourglass vanish seamless finish foundation stickThis creamy stick foundation is great for concealing, touching up certain areas of the skin or using all over. Macadamia seed oil gives the stick great slip and the unique shape means it’s super easy to use around the nose and under the eyes. This is a great foundation to sling in your bag when you’re on the go. The foundation also works well with other creamy make-up formulas like cream blush and eyeshadows, without looking too shiny. Available in 32 shades.

Chanel les beiges eau de teintThis innovatively fresh foundation is made from 75 per cent water and leaves the skin feeling hydrated thanks to its moisturising tamarind seed extract. The serum-like texture has tiny encapsulated micro droplets of pigment, which burst when buffed into the skin using a brush or your fingers, revealing glowing, soft-focus skin. This is great for people who want just a hint of sheer coverage. It would be even better if the range was more diverse, as it’s only available in six shades.

the holy grail of make-up buying. It can take a long time to find the

perfect shade and finish for you, but for years,

this was even harder for those with dark skin.

Often brands would only offer two or three dark shades and they would

range of undertones that foundations should cater to. We have looked for the very best when it comes to finish – whether you love glowy or matte skin, here
