Quantum Information Processing

• objective: basic research aimed at realisinga fully functional multi-qubit system

– few qubit applications

– simulation of quantum systems

– integrate theory/experiments/algorithms

– long-term rationale: build the general purpose quantum computer

Page 9: Future and Emerging Technologies

Emerging Nanoelectronics

• objective: nanoelectronics beyond 10nm, non-CMOS– hybrid CMOS-molecular, – nanowires - nanotubes– single-molecule electronics

• rationale: – non-CMOS electronics for integration into CMOS

and later for independent technology– new functions, low cost, manufacturing, self-organisation

• constituencies: electronics, physics, chemistry, (biology)

Preparing for FP7: directions

• Types of research– Curiosity-driven research– Basic Research– Industry-driven research– Policy-driven research

• Mechanisms:– Individual grants– Collaborative research: bottom-up or following “roadmaps”– Infrastructure, Human Resources– Coordination (Art. 169, etc.)

• Total budget: expect substantial increase– European Parliament: 30 B€ (currently 17 B€)
