DIRectoR’s ADDRess

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our first fundraising concert in aid of Irish Rule of Law International.

Tonight I am happy to present a diverse collection of singers and musicians, barristers and solicitors, who have all kindly agreed to share their talent in our name. We have a programme bringing sounds from Mexico to Ireland, from well known favourites to original songs. I hope there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

A big thank you to our Events Committee who have worked tirelessly to bring this concert into being.

I would also like to thank all the IRLI members and volunteers whose commitment, dedication and hard work is what keeps this organisation going.

Finally, I wish you a pleasant evening and thank you for your support.

Peter Harrison, our compère tonight, was a Partner in Hayes Solicitors for 32 years specialising in residential and commercial conveyancing and with a substantial mixed private client practice. He is now a part time consultant with the firm. His outside interests include horticulture and drama – he is Chairman of Council of the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland, Director of the Bray One Act Drama Festival and Founder Member of the Delgany Dramatic Society.

John o’Regan is a barrister and plays a solo acoustic gig every Saturday night upstairs in the Palace Bar on Fleet Street. He has previously made a guest musical appearance at the Lake of Stars Music Festival, Mangochi, Malawi in 2007.

flat 73 is a mixed a cappella group who have sung together informally since 2011. Almost all of the group (which counts 4 nationalities among it!) also sing in the Dublin based Goethe Institut Choir. The name derives from the city centre apartment of one of the members.

Michele Rayfus is a barrister and singer, and was, called to the Bar in 2006. In 2011 she released her first solo recording, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”.

chris Meehan is lead singer with Chris Meehan and his Redneck Friends, a 10-piece country band whose line-up “reads like Irish Music’s hall of fame”. Chris is currently collaborating with Michele Rayfus on a new album having recently worked with her on her first solo recording.

conor Bowman shares his birthday with George Harrison.

Paddy Daly has always had a love of and interest in music.  For over 30 years he has been involved with many Musical Societies in the West of Ireland and their productions, principally as Chorusmaster for Galway Musical Society, and his work has been recognised nationally with many awards.

Mariachi san Patricio is an ensemble of brass and string players who specialise in performing Mexican music. One of Ireland’s only mariachi bands, they have performed widely in Ireland, including recently in the Dublin TradFest, for which they featured on the cover of the Irish Times.

The farrell family comprise Niall Farrell and his wife Mary, a harpist, and their four daughters, Verona, Emma, Grace and Louise. The family has a strong legal tradition – Niall is a solicitor, and his daughter is soon to be trainee in Matheson Ormsby Prentice.

Paula Jennings is a solicitor and works with the Irish Rule of Law Malawi project. She is a part time painter, part time singer and a former Irish international racquetball player.

Justice Peter Kelly is currently the judge in charge of the Commercial list of the High Court. He enjoys music and opera in his spare time, and is well known for his renditions of musical numbers. We very much appreciate him giving his time to IRLI tonight.

The Lane Quintet is a clarinet quintet, being a string quartet with clarinet. The members met through the Dublin-based Hibernian Orchestra, in which they regularly perform. Somewhat traditionally, they have opted to take the name of the only man in the group.

The Bar choir has been delighting audiences for time immemorial, and are particularly noted for their Christmas Concerts heralding the festive season and their renditions of Gilbert and Sullivan. They are under the baton tonight, as ever, of Gordon Duffy, BL., conductor extraordinaire.

Adrian Mannering is a Senior Counsel, singer songwriter and balladeer. Tonight he will be performing two songs from his forthcoming album. Jarlath Ryan is a barrister practising commercial law and is involved in IRLI’s South Africa project. He is an enthusiastic trad player and is looking forward to leading the session tonight with Mick Clancy in the Blue Room.
