FUNDRAISE TO SAVE THE SURVIVORS
Photo: Hariandi Hafid/British Red Cross
THE INDONESIA TSUNAMI APPEALA very warm welcome. This guide aims to help you with your fundraising for the people affected by the Indonesia earthquake and tsunami. I would like to thank you for your support of the appeal. Your donations are enabling our member charities to make a difference. Sadly, each day we learn of new needs and all this is before aid workers start the huge task of rebuilding communities, buildings and, most importantly, lives.
We are all part of a global family. When one part is hit by a devastating event, the rest of the family comes to their aid. We’d like you to mobilise your family, friends and community to raise money for the Indonesian communities that have been torn apart by this catastrophe. There are some simple ideas for what you can do in this guide. If you need more support, please contact our team. We’re here to help you raise the money aid workers need to help save the survivors.
Thank you for your generosity and compassion. Together we are a strong force for good at desperate times like this.
Saleh Saeed - CEO, the DEC
P.S. If these ideas don’t fit, please don’t feel constrained. Do whatever you can to raise funds and support the appeal. THANK YOU!

HOW WE ARE HELPING SAVE THE SURVIVORSFrom the moment the disaster struck, DEC members have been providing Indonesian partners with vital support to scale up rapidly and save lives.
We’ve delivered essential items such as: food packages; thousands of litres of clean water; medicines and hygiene kits; tents and tarpaulins; emergency vehicles such as ambulances and water trucks; and generators, fuel and lighting equipment.
We’ve also set up temporary medical clinics and public kitchens, helped with the reunification of separated families, and created child-friendly spaces where children can play and recover while their families begin the process of rebuilding their lives.

TO SAVE THE SURVIVORSBAKE
GET YOUR BAKE ONEveryone loves cake; some are brilliant bakers. Let’s all rise to the occasion, share tea and a treat, and help raise cash for the DEC.
You can host your baking bonanza at work, at school, at a place of worship or even at the gym!Simply pick a place and ask your baking heroes to step up to the proving draw. Invite as many of your friends, colleagues and community as you can and make sure you charge them heaps for tasty tarts and perky pies.
You’ll find a poster in this guide to help promote your event, plus information about ways to pay in the money you raise. Early on the morning, share some pics on social of the carb-alicious creations on offer to attract even more ravenous friends.
Let us know what you are planning and we might be able to help with collecting tins and a t-shirt or two. Stocks (like great flapjacks) are limited.
6
7 TIPS FOR A BRILLIANT BAKE (SALE) Offer a prize for the best bake to help incentivise any shy chefs to take up their apron for a great cause.
Ask people to make savoury and sweet bakes which means you could start at coffee time and offer a slice of the action over lunch too.
Tell the story of the impact of your sale by using our handy briefing sheet (at the end of this guide).
Collect cash from the lucky munchers, tally it up and then pay it to the DEC either at a bank or as an online donation.
If you are hosting a bake at work, why not ask your boss if they will match the amount you raise? Often they’ll chip in. Sometimes just to spare themselves having to show off their flaky pastry skills.
Ask a truly brilliant baker to make an Indonesian cake and introduce it to your hungry helpers.
Set up a Facebook event for your bake and invite Mark Zuckerberg as well as your friends.

TRY A TRADITIONAL INDONESIAN TREATLUMPUR CAKE ( KUE LUMPUR )
75g margarine (or butter)
250ml water
150g flour (sifted)
100g sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
6 eggs
450ml coconut cream
100g raisins
100g coconut, flesh, slivered
7
Melt the margarine/butter in the water, add the flour and blend it until smooth. Add the sugar, salt and vanilla. When the batter is well blended, take off the heat and cool down.
Break the eggs one by one into the batter, beating well after each addition. Add the coconut milk little by little and beat until batter is smooth.
Cover again and continue cooking for about 5 minutes. Serve.
Warm the cake/muffin tin, oil it and fill each one three-quarters full. Cover with foil and cook until they’re half done. Open the foil and cook until they’re almost done. Remove the foil and scatter a few raisins and coconut slivers on top.

TO SAVE THE SURVIVORSWALK
DARE TO TAKE TO THE STREETSChallenge yourself to walk* to work for a week. For those with a 20-mile commute, how about getting off the train a stop early or parking the car / bike a little further away from the office? If you have a young family, how about walking to school one morning?
Whatever you do, get sponsored to do it so you can make your miles matter. Set up a page on JustGiving, aim for a target of £100 and let all your friends know what you are doing. Update them when you set off on your walk(s), take some snaps on the way, and share your feelings about the difference you are making.
You could also arrange a team walk at lunchtime if that works better for your workplace. Don’t forget to ask if your boss might match your fundraising.
*Walking not your thing? We’re totally open to any number of other safe, simple and social challenges. So feel free to do your own thing - just make it count for the tsunami survivors.
10
TOP TIPS FOR YOUR JUSTGIVING PAGECustomise your page: add a photo, explain your challenge, and show why this is important to you.
Set your fundraising target: let people know how much you’re aiming for and what the money will do.
Sponsor yourself! Set the bar for everyone else, show your commitment to your challenge and your passion for the DEC.
Thank and update your supporters: post messages of thanks into social and add training or preparation updates on your fundraising page.
Send reminders: everyone is busy, so don’t forget to politely chase up those who may have said they would donate but haven’t had time to do it yet. This is often best done at the very start of the month, not long after payday.
Tell everyone you know: use social, email and messenger apps to share your page link with anyone and everyone you know! Ask them to support you and let them know what a donation of just £30 will do.

TO SAVE THE SURVIVORSGAME
GET YOUR FORTNITE JUST RIGHTSwitch-up your gaming with some friends and a DEC challenge to save the survivors. Pick your platform and set up a marathon (or whatever works for you).
Charge fines, set quests, team up and take on a whole new experience! Whatever you do, you can find ways to raise money while having fun. The noble geeks at JustGiving have connected their fundraising tech into the world of twitch.tv so you can display your online fundraising page link on a panel.
To find out more about hosting a marathon with meaning, and help save the survivors, just search for “JustGiving + Gaming Marathon”.
While we don’t want to sound too much like parents, we do care! So please skip about and maybe even check if the sun is up from time to time during your marathon-ing.
13
For all the “statos”, music mavens and Goggleboxers out there, we bring you our BIG quiz which will make a big difference. Pick a venue, send out invites and get together with your closest 200 best friends, family or colleagues to do something great.
We’ll supply the questions, you just need to promote the event and get those 200 mates along. If you go to a regular pub or community quiz, why not ask them to use our questions or put some of the prize kitty toward the DEC Appeal?
We’d suggest you ask people to bring a prize per team as well as paying into a prize kitty (which could all go to the DEC or be split with the winner). Then set up plenty of fines for cheating, having your phone out, sneaking off to the toilet, being a smarty-pants or heckling the guru of questions.
If you are hosting a quiz at work, make sure you add some fines for extra wonky answers and ask your boss to match those fines too! Once you have completed the event, please pay any donations to the DEC either online or at a bank.

OTHER WAYS TO RAISE MONEYNot able to organise a fundraising event, but still keen to contribute? You can get involved in other ways too:
16
Donate - you can donate directly to our Appeal by visiting donation.dec.org.uk/indonesia. Please use the share buttons on our thank you page to inspire your friends to do the same.
Follow and share - follow the DEC on Facebook, Instagram and/or Twitter and please comment on/like/share/retweet to help spread the word. If you’re up for creating your own posts about the Appeal and sharing those with your network, you’ll find a selection of photos and some suggested messages at sites.google.com/view/decshare/home
Set up a Facebook Fundraiser - you may have seen these great new tools on Facebook. Just visit the DEC’s Facebook page and you can choose to set up your own fundraiser for us there.
Sell stuff on eBay - we all have a few extra ‘pre-loved’ things at home, so this is the perfect moment to dust them off and list them on eBay. When you pop them up for sale, you can choose to direct some or all of the sale price to the DEC. Find out more about eBay for Charity here: www.ebay.co.uk/rpp/charity-sellers

RAISING MONEY AT SCHOOLSchools across the UK are heroic in their efforts to raise money for our Appeals. We have partnered with the great team at Twinkl to make a set of specific schools’ materials, which you can access here.
Along with these classroom and assembly resources we are happy to help you with added support if needed, so please get in touch with our supporter care team and we will help you as best we can!
If a different idea fits better with your school community, please don’t hesitate to steer things yourself.
HOW TO PAY IN THE MONEY YOU RAISEIf you’re taking on a challenge and getting sponsored to do it, you should set up a JustGiving page for the DEC to collect your sponsorship. That will make it a lot easier for your friends and family to support you.
If you’re paying in money after holding an event, please do so online by going to donation.dec.org.uk
Alternatively, you can:
Send a cheque (no cash) to PO Box 999, London EC3A 3AA, made payable to ‘The DEC Emergency Appeal’. Please fill in a postal donation form (included at the end of this guide) and add it in with your cheque.
Pay in money at any post office or bank and building society except Nationwide or Britannia (banks kindly request that you sort your coins into separate bags which they can give you before you pay in).
HAVE A QUESTION? NEED ADVICE?We’re always happy to help, although please bear in mind that during times of Appeal, we may take a little while to get back to you.
You can contact us:
If you’re looking for a poster, sponsorship form or postal donation form, you’ll find templates for all of those at the end of this guide.
By filling in this online form.
By calling 0207 387 0200.
18
COLLECTING MONEY FOR THE APPEALWe’re asked about collections or offered kind volunteer time to support collections during Appeals. While we are hugely grateful for the support, collections can be difficult to arrange and carry out properly. We’d prefer to direct people to donate online since the money gets to us, and out to where it is needed, much faster. However if you wish to undertake a collection there are some things to sort out:
Make sure you plan for how you will secure, sort and pay in any cash you raise. It is, of course, very important that all money raised is sent to the DEC as soon as possible in order for us to help those affected by the tsunami.
Ensure you have permission from key organisations and people: the DEC, the local council, the local police, any relevant landowner or the manager / managing agent of venues such as offices, shops and shopping centres.
Recruit a number of helpers or volunteers to support the collection.
Make use of appropriate materials such as buckets and stickers which we may be able to help with, or we can point you in the direction of places you can buy them.
19
