Aim:  Vocabulary Practice   - Family  Level:  Beginner/  Elementary  Time:    approx.  30  minutes  Preparation:  You  will  need  to  go  to  http://www.flickr.com/photos/eltpics/sets/72157627057908602/page2/  to  choose  and  download  pictures  corresponding  to  family  members´  descriptions  in  the  activity.  You  may  also  use  your  own  pictures  or  ask  students  to  bring  pictures  from  magazines  to  the  class.  The  family  members  mind  map  might  be  useful  for  brainstorming  vocabulary.

Procedure:

Pre-task:  Brainstorm family  vocabulary  with  your  students.  Write  all  the  words  they  know  on  the  board.  

New  vocabulary:  sibling,  mother--in-law, brothern inn law,  stepbrother,  relatives,  an  only  child,  black  sheep,  relationship  

Main  task:  Distribute  the  prepared  pictures  corresponding  to  a  family  member  card  to  students,  1  or  2  members  per  a  student  depending  on  the  group  number.  Give  students  some  time  to  complete  the  information  that  is  missing,  ask  them  to  be  creative  and  use  their  imagination  to complete  the  missing  information.  When  they  are  finished,  their  task  is  to  present  the  family  member  to  a  group  retelling  the  information  about  him/  her.  For  example:  This  is  my  sister.  Her  name  is  Jane.  She  is  a  waitress…  

 Follow-up  task:  Use  the  following  questions  to  practise  talking  about  family/  family  members.

1.2 Food  around  the  world  

Aim:  Vocabulary practice-  Food  Level:  Elementary  Time:  approx.  40  min  Preparation:    You  will  need  to  show the fruit vocabulary picture  so  prepare  a  computer  and  a  projector.  You  will  also  need  to  prepare  the  cards  with  food   characteristics.    

Procedure:  

Pre-task:    Ask  students to  take  a  piece  of  paper and divide it into four columns. Ask them to put a different heading to each column - Berries, Stone Fruits, Citrus fruits and Pome fruits. Dictate the fruit vocabulary from the picture in a mixed order  . Students need to listen and put the vocabulary under the corresponding heading.  After you finish, show the picture with the fruit vocabulary to students, check their answers  and  teach  new  vocabulary.    

Main  task:  Cut  the  food  cards.  Distribute  one  per  a  student.  Give  them  5  minutes  to  remember  as  many  things  as  they  can  about  the  food  and  eating  habits  in  the  country  described  on  the  given  card.  When  the  time  is  up,  ask  them  to  try  to  retell  the  information  about  the  country.  The  task  of  the  rest  of  the  class  is  to  listen  to  everyone  and  write  down  as  much  information  about  the  food  and  eating  habits  typical  for  each  country  as  they  can.    

Follow-up  task:  

Use  the  following  questions  to  practise  talking  about  food  and  eating  habits:  

What  is  your  favourite  food?                How  long  do  you  take  to  eat  lunch?  

Do  you  usually  eat  lunch  or  dinner  with  your  family?  Do  you  think  vegetarian  diet  is  healthy?

1.3    My  home  

Aim:  Vocabulary  practice–  Furniture  Level:  Elementary  Time:  approx.  40  min  Preparation:  You  will  need  to  print  the  post-  it  -notes  with  the  rooms  in  the  house  and  also  the  furniture  cards.  

Procedure:    Pre-task:    Hang  the  printed  post-it  notes  on  the  walls  of  your  classroom.    Place  the  printed  cards  with  vocabulary  all  around  the  classroom.  The  task  of  students  is  to  find  cards  and  stick  them  to  the  room  of  the  house  post-  it  note  where  they  belong.  For  instance:  dining  table-  dining  room.    

Main  task:  Use  the  cut  up  vocabulary;  divide  the  class  into  2  groups.  One  student  of  a  group  comes  to  the  board  and  takes  a  card  from  the  pile,  his/  her  task  is  to  explain  the  word  from  the  card  in  one  minute  to  his/her  group.  Students  in  his/her  group  must  listen  and  try  to  guess  the  word  in  one  minute,  if  they  do,  they  receive  a  point,  if  they  don’t  guess  it  in  one  minute,  their  opponent  receives  a  point.    

Follow-up  task:  Use  the  following  questions  to  practise  talking  about  home.  

Do  you  live  in  a  house  or  in  a  flat?  

Would  you  like  to  live  abroad?  If  yes,  where?  

Do  you  live  in  a  city  or  in  a  village?  Is  it  better  to  buy  or  rent  a  house/  flat?  

Can  you  describe  each  room  of  the  house?  Is  it  common  in  your  country  to  have  a  swimming  pool?  

Do  you  live  alone  or  do  you  share  your  house?  Is  there  a  dining  room  in  your  flat/  house?

Aim:  Vocabulary Practice  –  Free  time/  Hobbies  Level:  Elementary  Time:    Approx  .40  min    Preparation:    You  will  need  to  print  the  pictures  (  Source:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/eltpics/sets/72157627057908602/page2/  )  or  you  can  bring  your  own  images  picturing  some  kind  of  a  free  –time  activity,  hobby.  

 Procedure:  

Pre-task:    Ask  students  to  write  down  all  letters  of  the  alphabet  leaving  some  space  next  to  each  letter,  as  you  can  see  bellow.  Give    them  3  minutes  to  try  to  write  one  free  time  activity  or  hobby  starting  with  each  letter  of  the  alphabet.

 Main  task:  Divide  students  into  pairs.  Distribute  pictures  to  students,  one  picture  per  a  student.  Their  task  is  to  describe  what  is  happening  in  the  picture  to  their  partner.  To  make  it  more  challenging  and  more  fun,  ask  them  to  describe  the  complete  opposite  of  what  they  can  see.  The  other  student’s  task  is  to  listen  and  make  notes  of  what  he  /she  can  hear  but  he/  she  must  write  down  the  opposite.  The  result  should  be  a  description  corresponding  to  the  picture.

1.5  The  weather  forecast  

Aim:  Vocabulary practice-  Weather  Level:  Elementary    Time:  Approx.  50  min  Preparation:  You  will  need  to  play  the  audio  sounds,  the  video  with  the  weather  forecast  to  students  and  cut  up  weather  forecast  cards.  

Procedure:    Pre-­‐task:  Write  down  the  weather  vocabulary  on  the  board.    Make  sure  students  understand  all  the  words.  Tell  your  students  that  you  are  going  to  play  some  sounds  typical  for  weather  to  them.  Their  task  is  to  listen  to  the  sounds  and  try  to  match  the  sounds  to  the  vocabulary  written  on  the  board.  

Main  task:    Tell  the  students  that  they  are  going  to  be  weather  forecast  presenters  today.  First  play  the  video  with  the  weather  forecast  to  them  and  tell  them  to  pay  attention  to  the  way  the  weather  forecast  is  presented.  Then  divide  them  into  pairs  and  distribute  the weather  forecast  cards  to  them,  one  card  per  a   pair.  Their  task  is  to  study  the  card  and  prepare  a  weather  forecast  for  the  given  country  and  present  it  to  the  class.  They  can  use  a  dictionary  for  preparation  of  the  weather  forecast.  

Follow-up  task:    Use  the  following  questions  to  practise  talking  about  the  weather  and  seasons:  

What  are  the  seasons  in  your  country?  Do  people  dress  differently  in  your  country  in  every  season?
