Become a Thrill Seeker

Many beach resorts are known for their amusement parks, and Cape May County is no exception. From Morey’s Piers - with three separate amusement parks in The Wildwoods - to Gillian’s Wonderland Pier in Ocean City, NJ, there are enough roller coasters, drop towers and whirling rides to suit all levels of thrill seeker.

Both boardwalk towns of The Wildwoods and Ocean City also have great waterparks with everything from lazy rivers to log flumes. Check out The Splash Zone and Morey’s Ocean Oasis Water Prak in the Wildwoods, as well as the Ocean City Waterpark, located just a bit farther up the Parkway on the boardwalk in Ocean City.

And, if you’re more in the mood for an aerial adventure in a Huck Finn style, Cape May County now has the Tree2Tree Adventure Park. You’ll advance to increasing levels of obstacle courses, all hovering above ground in the trees, and cap your adventure with a triple level zip line. It’s a true balancing act supported by harnasses that hold your entire body weight as you work your way through this tree-top adventure.

Savor Sweet Treats

For many, one of the hallmarks of summer is ice cream, if not as a mid-day tasty treat, than as an after-dinner destination trip. Happily, there are numerous choices both within walking distance of most hotels/motels, or within a short drive to see new sights.

Options include everything from Peace Pie, a new type of gourmet ice cream sandwich, on Carpenter’s Lane in Cape May, to Springer’s Homemade Ice Cream just up the Garden State Parkway in Stone Harbor.

It wouldn’t be the Jersey Shore if there weren’t also tons of choices for fudge, salt water taffy, and

popcorn. Most establishments are small and family-owned, and make you feel extra special for stopping in.

Where can you find them? Simply pick a boardwalk or a downtown shopping district & start walking. No matter where you are at the Jersey Shore, you’re sure to find a store selling these sweet treats.

Dig for Treasures

Rumors abound about pirate stories and treasures in Cape May, including potential treasures from the infamous Blackbeard and Captain Kidd.

Each July, for more than 50 years, the City of Cape May holds a Captain Kidd Treasure Hunt in front of Cape May Convention Hall. In fact, Higbee Beach, located on the other side of the canal from the Cape May ferry terminal, is thought to be just one of Blackbeard’s treasure spots.

Year-round, all ages of treasure hunters comb the

sands on Sunset Beach looking for diamonds in the rough that, when polished, become official Cape May Diamonds.

Or, if you’re into a different type of treasure hunt, a plethora of antique shops throughout the county let you dig for all sorts of local treasures that you can take home as unique souvenirs of the area.

Get Wild for Wildlife

The Delaware Bay is a haven for wildlife, from birds on the Northeast airborne migratory trail, to whales, dolphins and seals on their own marine migrations. It’s not unusal to spot any, or all, of these amazing animals while on board the Cape May Ferry. In fact, we’ve had more than 150 different bird species spotted and logged by birders while on the ferry.

But the wildlife adventures don’t stop once you hit land. There are numerous birdwatching stations throughout the county, including the Cape May Bird Observatory at Cape May Point near the Cape May Lighthouse.

Did you know that Cape May is often referred to as the Birding Capital of North

America? It’s true, in the fall, more than 400 species of birds can be sighted, and it’s also prime season for spotting monarch butterflies as they start their winter migration to Mexico.

Beyond the birds and the sealife, the Nature Center of Cape May is a great place to learn about more of Cape May County’s naitve wildlife, with materials and programs for all age groups.

The wildlife viewing opportunities extend beyond just our native species, and in fact, beyond our entire continent! At the Cape May County Park & Zoo (free to enter!) they’ve got African Lions, Australian Black Swans, and Ankole Watusis, just to name a few.

Go Retro

Part of the charm in coming to Cape May County is the opportunity to step back in time and remember how things used to be. From Victorian Bed & Breakfast guest houses in Cape May to the 1950’s Doo Wop motels in the The Wildwoods, you can experience the history of Cape May County for yourself!

For example, grab a glimpse at the life and times of one of Cape May’s earliest gentlemen farmers,

Emlen Physick, with a tour of the Emlen Phyisck Estate

Or, if you want to step back even further, another fun stop is Historic Cold Spring Village, registered on the NJ Registry of Historic Places. The largest outdoor living history museum in NJ, the Village’s 30 acres give visitors a peek at South Jersey rural life in the 1800s.

Or if history isn’t exactly your cup of tea, don’t worry! Many come to Cape May to just hike, bike and enjoy that slower pace that harkens back to simpler times. In Cape May Point State Park, the Monarch Trail, named for the swarms of regal butterflies that come to rest and feed in the fall, is an easy 1.2 mile hike and is just one of several great beach trails in the county.
