Gen Ed. Front and Center T he rollout of a draft General Education model this month has produced a shot of adrenaline and prompted some excellent discussions among faculty members so far, with a lot more to come. When we started this process more than a year ago, I would not have imagined that we would want to roll out a model with significant problems, but in retrospect, I am glad that it needs some work. As with any draft, we have the makings in place, but we still have work to do, and the model we have gives us something to work with instead of abstracts and hypotheticals. My current role is primarily administrative, but I also have been a member of the Salisbury University faculty for more than 20 years and from the depth of my being want the very best for our students. I like that the new model embraces the entirety of the Salisbury University experience. While the current model is built on the understanding that our students need an academic experience that reaches across the disciplines, it does not adequately communicate why we do this and how General Education fits into the broader undergraduate experience. The new model should communicate succinctly and clearly how this experience prepares students for their adult lives, as individuals, as members of communities (citizens) and as professionals – in other words, how we carry out the University’s mission through General Education. Even if the Code of Maryland (COMAR) did not mandate it, I would be a strong champion of the distributional model we currently have and will retain. To the degree that we are introducing elements that might be considered thematic, essentially we are still directing students toward math and sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts. With many students, it’s our last chance to lay out the spectrum of disciplines through which human beings expand knowledge and explore and express the human condition. It may be in the realm of citizenship education, in fact, that this distribution is most important. Consider, for instance, the science informing our understanding of climate change and how that in turn affects economics, politics and culture. We are also under pressure to keep it short: professional programs in particular, accountable to accrediting bodies and state agencies, work hard to pack it all into 120 credit hours. But General Education should be more than a series of hurdles to clear on the way to the program gate: it should be a vital and integral component of professional education in terms of the broader knowledge and skills everyone needs to be successful. I’m not sure keeping it short is in our students’ best interest. We are a selective, regional, comprehensive university, so we have very bright students who may not have had the most privileged or superior of educational experiences thus far. For many of them, college is not just a shot at redemption but also critical to their competitiveness as adult professionals. We owe them a rigorous and rich experience with both structure and transparent rationale and goals. I believe we also need a model that addresses one of the chief realities that surrounds us, namely that we have achieved a significant democratization of higher education that has opened its doors not just to www.salisbury.edu/fulton Charles R. & Martha N. The Salisbury University Dance Companyrecently performed its 27th Fall StudentShowcase. This year’s concert featured

new work by student company members, as wellas guest work by alumni dancers.Since its beginning in 1960 as the Modern

Dance Club, the Salisbury University DanceCompany has provided for experiences in artisticdance forms through training, performance andproduction. The company is an accredited courseopen to all students through auditions. It isfunded by grants from the Maryland Arts Counciland the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council,agencies funded by the National Endowment forthe Arts. The fall concert is the culmination of the

semester’s work by the company. Studentchoreographers start the process before thesemester begins, conceptualizing an idea,choosing accompanying music and costuming,auditioning and casting dancers, and overseeingweekly rehearsals, all under my guidance asartistic director. This affords students theopportunity to expand their artistic talents beyondthe realm of performance. Choreographers also develop a plot for lighting

design with assistance from SU theatre facultymember John Raley. The concert is adjudicatedby a panel of performing arts professionals, whoprovide valuable commentary, insight and advice,thus enhancing the students’ learning experience. One piece is selected by the judges for inclusion

in the company’s spring semester concert.This season, six company members elected to

present their work in this concert. Corrine Dovell,Amanda Ernau, Marie Hils, Willow Saundersand India Whitehead created dances in acontemporary genre, while member Arielle

Weinstein presented an upbeat tap dance to openthe show. Additionally, alumna dancer Kerry Brennan

(’12) was featured as a guest performer. Brennanwas a member of SU Dance Company for mostof her undergraduate years. She is living inSalisbury teaching dance and physical fitness.The concert’s all-company finale was

choreographed and staged by alumna Daniella Celia (’15).Celia was a prolificchoreographerduring herundergraduate timewith the company,setting three workson her fellowdancers. She residesin Worcester Countywhere she isemployed in bothmarketing and dance instruction.

the sons and daughters of privilege but toanyone with the ability to be successful.(Means remain a challenge.) While theprivileged benefited from a liberal artseducation, we hope, the stakes for our studentsare higher: they don’t have the clubs andconnections that enshrine and perpetuateprivilege; they actually have to bringknowledge and skills to bear and provethemselves by their merits.Our curriculum bears some of the vestiges

of older ways. For example, I think art ormusic “appreciation” smacks of finishing

school – the sense that to fit into propersociety, one needed to be able to sit through aconcert or stroll through an art gallery politelybut without any real need to understand whatwas really going on. As it turns out, readingnovels is not something we should do becauseother “people like us” do it. As it turns out,literature is one of the major means by whichwe humans understand and empathize withone another. That’s pretty critical to any kindof personal happiness or professional success,not to mention keeping society together.Beyond mere appreciation, I think we can

come up with a more muscular definition ofhow we want our graduates to be able toengage all forms of human expression as anessential human activity.So let the discussions continue with a sense

of direction and purpose, warm collegialityand a firm commitment to doing the best wecan for our students. We already provide ourstudents with an outstanding experience, giventhe range of programs and activities wesupport through excellent teaching andscholarship. But part of what makes us great isa tireless quest to do even better.

Reflections from a RetiringProfessor: Dr. Paul Pfeiffer

At the end of the summer of 1971, myparents pulled into the circular drivebehind Wicomico Dorm, helped unload

my assembled possessions, wished me well anddrove away. I was now on my own. Armed withwell-intentioned advice from family who hadnever attended college, I began my long tenureat Salisbury as a wide-eyed freshman. At that time, Salisbury State College had men’s

dorms and women’s dorms (the principle women’sdorm being the third floor of Holloway). Thedorms still had “mothers”; ours being a verygrandmotherly lady, who, frankly, could not haveexerted any power over a dorm full of 18 yearolds but was nonetheless respected. Girls had to sign out in order to leave at night

and had an 11 p.m. curfew – even on weekends.Many, set on the more sociable privileges ofcollegiate life, adopted the practice of slipping inunobserved after hours. There was a “Coffee House” held in the

basement of Holloway on weekend nights –complete with Beatnik poetry readings, thoughsans the cliché finger-clicking approval. Therewere nocturnal “Panty Raids” in which boysparaded under the Holloway dormitory windowsgreeted by girls hanging out said windows invarying states of undress flinging the titularundergarments down to the boys with as muchceremony as if they had bestowed their kerchiefsupon knights in armor. Time seemed suspended here. As the more

western reaches of the country churned over CivilRights and the Vietnam War, Salisbury seemedsafely preserved from such upheavals. When the Vietnam War and its protests began

to creep in upon us, there would be“streaking,” with its primal sense of protest.Young men rushed out of the dorms towardHolloway to be treated again to the oglingand cheering of young women. There were protest rallies. There were

protest films. There was clearly tension. But theprotective pattern of academic life profferedsecret comfort in the predictability of classesand exams. By the time I had graduated in 1975, much

had changed. There were co-ed dorms with24-hour visitation. The “mothers” had beendispatched, likely with some relief, as theatmosphere on campus took on the tenor ofthe times. The “revolution” of the ’60s had finallysettled in Salisbury.There also had been in that time an influx of a

great many new faculty – incredibly powerfulteachers at the brink of their maturity. I had thegood fortune to study with many of them andcannot express the profundity of their collectiveeffect upon me and my life. When I joined the faculty in 1980, I held their

example before me, as I have since, in hopes ofhaving some small imitation of their effects uponmy students and colleagues. Thirty-seven yearslater, I find, to my surprise, that I haveunwittingly, but happily, spent my entire adult lifeat Salisbury. I have survived three name changes,four presidents, three versions of the Alma Matersong and a myriad of smaller changes that havehad tremendous impact of the shape andatmosphere at Salisbury. In my own small fiefdom of theatre, I proudly

claim a major role in those changes and take

pride in having had some part in the great sweepof events called “our history.”As I prepare my exit from this long-loved

institution, I see another new world full of unrestand impatience, eager to change what is notunderstood for something far less lasting, howeverattractive. The disposable culture has settled in. Yet any change, no matter how seeming small,

must have its ripple effect and so must beanticipated and approached with care. Change forthe sake of change is not progress. Progress ismade slowly over time and only with great effortand fortitude. True progress is never easy, never tame, never

granted, but it is long fought and hard won.

Victoria Pass presented her invited lecture,titled "Designed for Speed: Fashion and CarCulture in the 1920s and 30s,” in conjunctionwith the exhibition “Rolling Sculpture: Art DecoCars from the 1930s and 40s” at the NorthCarolina Museum of Art in Raleigh onNovember 4.

C. Tara and David Gladden wereincluded in a night ofcinematic performanceinspired by the work of EstaNesbitt, titled “Everyman asAnyman,” on September 25at the 2640 Space inBaltimore. As a part of theevening’s performances andscreenings, they presented a

site-specific performance, “Forgotten and Nowthe Coming Thing,” which involved live feedcameras, multiple projections, live music and liveperformance with Xerox machines.

Dean Peterson’s work wasincluded in several exhibitions thisfall: in “Strokes of Genius” at theCircle Gallery in Annapolis,“Water Works” at the AnnapolisMaritime Museum and in theMaryland Federation of Art’s FallMember Show, also at the CircleGallery. His work, “Down Under,”included in Abstract at the OceanCity Art League in October, wonhonorable mention. He alsoparticipated in the 23rd NationalJuried Exhibition at the ArtInstitute and Gallery in Salisbury.

COMMUNICATION ARTS

Vinita Agarwal’s research, “Taking Care,Bringing Life: A Poststructuralist FeministAnalysis of Maternal Discourses of Mothers anddai’s in India,” has been accepted for publicationin the journal Health Communication. The researchexamines alternative delivery practices of acommunity of dai’s embodying an Ayurvedicphilosophy. Earlier versions of the paper werepresented at the Eastern CommunicationAssociation, winning a top two paper award, theInternational Communication Association inJapan and the National CommunicationAssociation in Washington, D.C. This fall,Agarwal served on the Journal Special IssueAward Committee for ECA, as peer reviewer forthe International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction,Health Education and Behavior and ManagementCommunication Quarterly and as conferencereviewer for ECA and NCA.

Agarwal’s submission for OURCA wasaccepted and she participated in the Council ofUndergraduate Research Institute on “Initiatingand Sustaining Undergraduate ResearchPrograms,” Canada, along with selectedprograms from universities across the U.S. andinternationally. She also completed herAyurveda Wellness Educator training for healthprofessionals co-sponsored by the University ofMaryland Center for Integrative Medicine tofurther her research in alternative medicine.

David Burns will co-edit a textbook titled YouMake The Call: Case Studies in Sport Communication(Routledge), due out in 2018. You Make the Calloffers upper-level undergraduates and graduatestudents the opportunity to evaluate popular anddiverse issues in sport. The book examines thecorporate and private communication successesand failures involving contemporary sport issueslike concussions, gender equality, race relationsand individual free speech versus corporaterevenue. Burns also will contribute two chaptersto the book.

Jennifer Cox’s research article, “News OrgsPost More Often on Twitter than on Facebook,”was published in the summer edition of

Newspaper Research Journal. Her study examinedthe types of news stories published on the twosocial media platforms and revealed differencesin the content organizations shared on the sites.

Haven Simmons mentored publicinformation officers, taught media relations andanchored newscasts during a federal emergencymanagement course featuring a mock trainderailment and hazardous materials exercise forAtascadero-San Luis Obispo, CA, at theNational Emergency Training Center inEmmitsburg in early October.

CONFLICT ANALYSIS & DISPUTERESOLUTION

Toran Hansen’s presentation, “Sanctuary as aConcept in Peacebuilding,” was presented at thePeace and Justice Studies Association AnnualConference on September 24.

Soosaipillai Keethaponcalan’s researcharticle, “Reshaping the Non-aligned Movement:Challenges and Vision,” was published in theBandung: Journal of the Global South.

ENGLISH

Elizabeth Curtin presented at two conferenceslast summer. At the International Writing acrossthe Curriculum Conference in Ann Arbor, MI,she presented an Advanced Faculty WAC/WIDSeminar “Exploring Connections BetweenGenre Conventions and DisciplinaryKnowledge.” At the Council of WritingProgram Administrators in Raleigh, NC, shepresented with CMAT’s Jennifer Cox andMath’s Alexander Halperin, “Flipping theRubric: An Experiment in Evaluation Across theCurriculum.”

Gary Harrington served on a nationwideFulbright Literature Committee during thesummer, evaluating and ranking applicationsfrom American professors for Fulbright SeniorScholar positions abroad for the 2017-18academic year.

Derya Kulavuz-Onal presented a paper, titled“Co-constructing a Collective Teacher Identitythrough Discourse: Linguistic Practices inWebheads in Action Online Language TeacherCommunity,” at the prestigious, highly selective,American Association of Applied Linguisticsannual international conference and anotherpaper, titled “Positioning, Linguistic Identity, andLanguage Socialization on Facebook: A Case ofESL Teachers and Their Students,” at theInternational Society for Language StudiesConference in the past months. She also joined ateam of Salisbury University teacher-scholars topresent her best practices of teaching linguisticsclasses online at a regional MAGIC (Mid-Atlantic Group Instructing with Canvas)conference.

Loren Loving Marquez presents “AssessingTeaching Preparation for Community Colleges:Certification Processes and programs” for the2016 Virginia Assessment Group Conference inNovember. This talk showcases practices thatimprove the quality of teaching.

Judith E. Pike is co-editor and author ofCharlotte Brontë from the Beginnings: New Essays fromthe Juvenilia to the Major Works, published byRoutledge in October. Over the summer, Pike’schapters, “Agnes Grey” in A Companion to theBrontës and “‘How English Is Lucy Snowe’?: PinkFrocks and a French Clock” in Time, Space, Placein Charlotte Brontë, also came out. Thesepublications were planned to coincide with thebicentenary of Charlotte Brontë's birth in 2016.Pike also was grateful to receive a mini-grant toconduct research at Chawton House Library inthe U.K. She also presented her paper, “A NewLegacy for Charlotte Brontë: From Miss Foxleyin The Secret (1833) to Jane Eyre,” at the ChawtonHouse Library conference, Charlotte Brontë: ABicentennial Celebration of Her Life and Workslast May. Afterward, her paper was solicited tobe included as a chapter for a new book onCharlotte Brontë and material culture.

John Wenke published a review of FacingMelville, Facing Italy: Democracy, Politics, Translation,edited by John Bryant, Giorgio Mariani andGordon Poole, in Leviathan: A Journal of MelvilleStudies in June. He also published a creative non-fiction memoir essay that explores his experienceas a Catholic grade school student in the 1960swith a special focus on his twin aunts, who wereboth Immaculate Heart of Mary nuns. “TheBrides of Christ” appears in Communion LiteraryMagazine’s December issue.

HISTORY

Ronald Dziwenka, a new part-time lecturer,was invited to present his research at the 2016Buddhist Sutra Transmission and TranslationConference in June, sponsored by theWoodenfish Foundation and held at Dunhuang,in China’s Gansu Province. He presented thechapter on the Goryeo Buddhist Canon co-authored with Jiang Wu (University of Arizona)and was published in the book Spreading Buddha’sWords in China: The Formation and Transformation ofthe Chinese Buddhist Canon.

Dean Kotlowski published two peer-reviewedarticles in international journals this year. “ThePossibilities and Limitations of First-ladyDiplomacy: Imelda Macros and the NixonAdministration” appeared in Diplomatic History,and “Selling America to the World: The Officeof War Information’s The Town (1945) and theAmerican Scene Series” was published inAustralasian Journal of American Studies. The formerarticle stemmed from research conducted duringhis time as Fulbright Scholar in the Philippines(2008). The latter was completed during histenure as the Fulbright-Botstiber visitingprofessor in Austria (2016). Over the spring andsummer, he gave numerous presentations acrossEurope, including at the Roosevelt Study Center

in Middleburg, Netherlands (“‘Goodnight, Mr. President’: Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Legacy inFilm and Television”) and at WestfälischeWilhelms-Universität in Münster, Germany(“The Road to Self-determination: RichardNixon and American Indian Rights”).

Aparajita Mukhopadhyay presented herpaper, “Uneven Spaces and Contested Nation:Railway Travel in Colonial India,” via Skype atthe annual conference of the InternationalAssociation for the History of Transport, Trafficand Mobility held in Mexico City, Mexico.

Emily Story presented her paper, “Saints,Scientists and Politicians: Making Brasília’sPast,” at the European Association for UrbanHistory conference at the University of Helsinkiin Finland in August.

MODERN LANGUAGES &INTERCULTURAL STUDIES

Claire Kew and Aurélie Van de Wielepresented a paper, titled “Using Advertising inFrench Courses: ‘I’m lovin’ it,’” at the AmericanCouncil on the Teaching of Foreign LanguagesConvention in November.

Sally Perret’s article, “Fish and Trees AreAlike: The Movement of Identity in KirmenUribe's Bilbao-New York-Bilbao,” appears in thewinter issue of the Hispanic Review.

Aurélie Van de Wiele's review of the bookÉtude sur la poésie contemporaine: des affleurements duréel à une philosophie du vivre, by Régis Lefort,appears in the next issue of The French Review.

MUSIC, THEATRE & DANCE

Victoria Hutchinson presented “Dance as anExpression of Spirituality” in the DistinguishedFaculty Lecture Series in October. Throughpictures and film, the lecture examined thespirituality of the dancing body in three religioustraditions from India, Nigeria and theSouthwestern United States: The Hindudevotional dance of Bharatanatyam, the YorubaEgungun Masquerade and rare footage from1940 of the Yaqui Easter Ceremony. Rhyannon Bemis partnered with Amy Barra(education curator) and Stacey Weisner(president and CEO) at the Delmarva DiscoveryCenter and Museum in Pocomoke City toestablish a new Living Laboratory site. LivingLaboratory is a national model for sharingresearch on child development with the public.At Living Laboratory, visitors to the DelmarvaDiscovery Center and Museum can participatein actual research studies and can completedevelopmentally themed activities, calledresearch toys. The dates when LivingLaboratory will be at the Delmarva DiscoveryCenter and Museum are listed on their website.

Jason McCartney gave a talk for the SouthernEstate Planning Council on October 17, titled“Overview of the Ownership SuccessionPlanning Process and Advisor’s Roles,” in whichhe reviewed research on family communicationpatterns and challenges, such as enmeshmentand disengagement. Other topics includedmistaken assumptions on family relationships,challenge of topic avoidance and benefits ofopen dialogue. Attendees were primarily lawyersand accountants

SU Art Galleries: The Year in FocusBy Tara Gladden

Fall 2016 was an exciting semester for theSU Art Galleries. We moved our Downtown Campus Gallery

into a new temporary space on the DowntownPlaza in the Gallery Building (212 W. MainStreet) across the street from Roadie Joe’s andright across the hall from Maya Bella’s Pizza. We featured provocative, moving exhibitions in

all three of our galleries: the University Galleryin Fulton Hall, the Downtown Campus Galleryand the Electronic Gallery in Conway Hall. Inthe University Gallery, we collaboratively hostedthe travelling, historic exhibition “Ruth StarrRose: Revelations of African American life inMaryland and the World,” in collaboration withthe Nabb Research Center for Delmarva Historyand Culture. This exhibition, sponsored by the Office of the

President and the Fulton School of Liberal Arts,was curated by Barbara Paca and was developedfor the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of AfricanAmerican History and Culture in Baltimore. Itfeatured artworks depicting the lives of prominentAfrican American families from the Eastern Shorein the 1930s and 40s, as well as a collection ofartworks visualizing African American spirituals.It also showcased works created during Ruth StarrRose’s travels around the world. Paca also visited SU and gave an enlightening

talk about the exhibition, the history behind the

artist and the families depicted in the artwork. At our Downtown Campus Gallery, we curatedthe event-based exhibition, “inFORMATION:Black Culture in Contemporary Art,” whichhosted visiting artists from around the countrywho presented a multitude of inquisitive,interdisciplinary projects and perspectives. Theexhibition included live performances,installations, a film screening, drawing, poetry,video, music and interactive community events. In the Electronic Gallery, we presented the

political exhibition “Shattered Frames: The Filmsof Martha Colburn,” featuring a collection of stopmotion animation films that explore Americanhistory and culture, war, protest and featured twosatirical films that present cut-up stump speechesof both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Theexhibition closed on Election Day.Moving into spring 2017, we have another full

roster of excellent exhibitions and events. Somehighlights of the coming semester include an SUArt Department Faculty Exhibition in theUniversity Gallery. At our Downtown Campus Gallery we will

present “Nature/Nurture,” a group exhibitionthat explores the ways in which the natural worldhas been shaped and transformed by humans andin turn how biology shapes our lives. Thisexhibition will include visiting artist talks byOnajide Shabaka and Amber Cowan.

Artist Liss LaFleur, who participated in theexhibition “Being Her Now” in spring 2016,returns to SU to present a continuation of theproject “HEROINES,” about unsung feministhero Claude Cahun. LaFleur’s upcomingexhibition, titled “IN TRAINING,” is a soloexhibition of neon, sound, 3D printed objects andperformance works that reflect on three years ofresearch focused on Cahun. It includes workcreated at SU last spring as part of“HEROINES” and will be presented in ourElectronic Gallery. LaFleur also will give an artisttalk while she is here.Finally, in June, we inaugurate “FEAST

Salisbury!” This will be a creative, sit-down dinneroutside on the downtown plaza featuring the bestculinary delights Salisbury has to offer whileraising money for the visual arts in Salisbury. Thisnew community event is sponsored by SU’s Officeof Government and Community Relations. Stay tuned for more information about

summer 2017 when we’ll be moving ourtemporary Downtown Campus Gallery into ournew permanent home in the same building on thesame floor, plaza level, just situated in the back ofthe building on the south side. For up-to-date information about all of our

Pandey Receives $2.37 Million Grant

Anjali Pandey, professor of appliedlinguistics/TESOL, is the author of anewly funded $2.73 million National

Professional Development project sponsored bythe United States Office of English LanguageAcquisition (OELA), the federal agencycharged with training educators on effectiveimmigrant educational access. This linguisticstraining program, titled Training andRetaining Grades K-12 English LearnerTeaching Professionals (TARGET—Phase III),consists of three cohort-based programs aimedat educators (ACCESS), administrators(ENCORE) and parents (COMPASS).The project serves 10 independent, high-need

schools spanning 42 percent of Maryland’s schooldistricts: Anne Arundel, Caroline, Cecil,Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset,Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester – a total of 251schools, enrolling more than 5,000 Englishlearners (ELs). Initial needs assessment data point to cultural

incongruities in the schooling experiences of newcomer ELs. Maryland remains a front-runnerin demographic trends in schooling toward aminority-majority make-up at 59 percent. Incontrast, in some districts, the teacher workforce is

95 percent Caucasian and 81 percent female. The project plans to utilize emerging

sociolinguistics-based frameworks of enhancedpedagogical efficacy whose outcomes on overallEL student achievement will be assessed viarigorous, evidence-based experimental design. Grassroots, community-oriented, language-

retention paradigms in a nation in whichapproximately 3 00 languages enter annuallyform core design features of the project.Training, both educator- and parent-oriented, ispremised on heritage language maintenance.This is in contrast to increasingly defunct modelsof schooling based on linguistic assimilation—the subject of Pandey’s most recent book,Monolingualism and Linguistic Exhibitionism(Palgrave-Macmillan 2016). Aiming to train 500 participants over the life of

the project, models of such linguistic sustainabilityare particularly timely when a language dies everytwo weeks. Via innovative, culturally embeddedlinguistic strategies leveraging the potency ofemerging mobile devices designed to instigatelong-term meaningful newcomer parentalinvolvement and advocacy, the project providesnext generation educators with replicablestrategies for enhanced EL social integration and

educational success in a nation premised onequitable education for all. To date, this is the largest single discretionary

funded project awarded to Salisbury University.Of 337 proposals submitted nationwide for the2016 competition, 49 projects received funding, toinclude projects at Brown, Penn State, Temple,Texas A & M, UCLA and a host of universitiesacross 26 states in the nation. This project was the number one-ranked

application in a competitive two-tiered reviewprocess. It is the sole project awarded to the Stateof Maryland. Invited to share comments at the 2016 Project

Director’s Convention in Washington, D.C., inOctober, Pandey’s closing remarks on shiftingparadigms in educator linguistic training and theneed for measures of casual efficacy in 21st century PD inclusive of both experimentaland qualitative evidence-based outcomes was metwith standing ovation. This is the fourth funded project authored by

Pandey at SU. Prior projects she has authored anddirected, totaling over $7.5 million, have providedlinguistic training to approximately 400 ofMaryland’s educators.

Racial Politics Lecture with Cedric JohnsonBy Eric Manley and David Giorgis

Squawk The Vote: PACE continuedto focus on the November elections thoughcampus events. Through voting tables andpresentations to classes and groups, PACEstudent voting assistants helped approximately35 students register to vote in Maryland andmore than 200 more to request absentee ballots.

College Democrats &Republicans Forum: Students fromSalisbury University and members of the Cityof Salisbury gathered in Perdue Hall’sauditorium for a panel discussion from theCollege Republicans and College Democratson October 25. The event was coordinated byPACE and the Political Science Departmentand gave students the opportunity to hear howeach major party stood on five key issues. Theissues covered included immigration, policing,terrorism and the military, global warming,and gun control. Members from each club

were given five minutes to espouse their party’splatform and explain how their respectivepresidential candidate would address the issue.A lively question-and-answer session followedeach segment.

Discourse Series:More than 60students participated in PACE’s “Engaging inPolitical Discourse Series: Keeping Your Coolwhen Discussing Hot Issues.” PACE facilitatorshosted small group conversations about what isimportant to students in this election andprovided strategies to encourage dialogue thatis both authentic and civil. At the end of thediscussion, students committed to speaking toone person with whom they would notnormally engage in political conversation usingthese strategies. Some of the people theyplanned to approach were roommates, parentsand grandparents, co-workers, and classmates.

Salisbury University hosted the MultipleDimensions of Inequality Lecture “RacialPolitics” with Cedric Johnson on

September 29 to a full audience in the PerdueHall Auditorium. The series is organized by SU professors Eric Rittinger from the PoliticalScience Department and Alexander Stoner fromthe Sociology Department. Cedric Johnson is an associate professor of

African-American Studies at the University ofIllinois in Chicago. His presentation, “Endingthe Police Crisis: What Must Be Done andWho Is Going To Do It,” gave an in-depth lookof the racial injustice that is occurring in theUnited States.

Johnson gave numerous examples of how ourcountry is becoming more racially divided. Heexplained that in order to solve racial divide wemust all come together as one and tackle the issueas a whole. He said every one of us, not just asmall group of people, needs to be involved injustice if we truly want to see change. Johnson is an advocate for decriminalizing

poverty, which would help those who are under-privileged and give them opportunities to prosper,along with providing them with treatment, such asrehabilitation, instead of imprisonment. Also,reducing unnecessary fines for African Americansand creating public service opportunities areelements that Johnson stressed as possible

solutions to end the injustices that they have facedfor hundreds of years. “This presentation was eye-opening and

introspective” said Gregory Alegbe, a seniorinterdisciplinary studies major. “I’m glad that SUcontinues to host the Multiple Dimensions ofEquality Lecture.“Mr. Johnson was very passionate about this

subject, and it makes me want to do moreresearch and possibly contribute to helpingprovide change to the injustice that is currentlytaking place.”Johnson emphasized racial inequality can end

over time if we come together as a county andface the epidemic head on.

Internships 101 Salisbury PopsHoliday Concert

Would you like to gain anunderstanding of internshipopportunities and how to work

with your advisor to obtain one? Considertaking IDIS 280.151 – Internships 101 offeredduring the spring 2017 semester. During the seven-week, two-credit course,

you will hear from internship coordinatorsfrom various programs and learn importanttopics, such as interviewing, professionalism inthe workplace and how to market yourexperience. Additionally, you will learn how to

use Career Services as a resource. The course is rather unusual in that it will

feature coordinators and professionals who willaddress the way forward for students who wantinternships. Ideally, the seven-week course willprepare students to follow up on summer or fall2017 internships.The class is offered next spring on Tuesday

nights, from 7-8:15 p.m. Seating in this pass/failcourse is limited. Students can register for thecourse on GullNet or visit Crystal Dickerson inCareer Services.

Dr. Lee Knier leads the Salisbury “Pops”in a Holiday Concert Tuesday,December 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the

Holloway Hall Auditorium. The “Pops” will feature several guests,

including: Squawkapella, Dr. Paul Pfeiffer, whowill narrate Clement Moore’s poem “The NightBefore Christmas,” and senior Cornelius Fletcher,bass, who reprises his role as “The Grinch.”The one-hour concert ushers in the holiday

season with performances of well-known carols,decorations in Holloway Hall and a visit fromSanta Claus. It is a family-friendly program andfree to the public.

Mad Max: Fury Road Composer Speaks to Film Students

The composer of Mad Max: Fury Road,Junkie XL (Tom Holkenberg), talkedvia Skype with Dr. Andrew Scahill's

Introduction to Film class from his productionstudio in Los Angeles on November 2. Holkenberg is an award-winning and prolificfilm artist, who began his career as a trance DJand transitioned into film scoring forblockbuster films, such as 300, Divergent, AmazingSpiderman 2, Deadpool and Batman Vs. Superman.His background as a classically trained pianistand an electronica DJ has allowed him tocultivate a unique and forward-thinkingapproach to film scoring.

The class had screened Mad Max: Fury Roadearlier in the semester for a unit on sounddesign, and the students came prepared withquestions, ranging from his inspiration for thefilm’s creative score to future projects like TheDark Tower and Justice League.“We were honored to have such an influential

figure in contemporary Hollywood filmmakingtalk to our Salisbury students directly and helpdemystify the process of filmmaking,” Scahill said. This is the second time Hollywood

professionals have done a Skype question-and-answer session with one of Scahill's classes. In2015, his class hosted Winter’s Bone producer

Anne Rossellini, and in one month, hisIntroduction to Genre class will host Tangerine director Sean Baker.

During the past year, the Fulton Schoolhas partnered with the NationalHumanities Alliance (NHA) and

Maryland Humanities to develop a regionalworking group of humanities organizations. While “humanities” may not have quite thesame ring as “arts” when it comes to describingthe kind of programming and opportunities thatmake a community vibrant and attractive, manypeople enjoy subjects like literature and historyand are eager to participate in programs thatexplore the human condition through these andother means. This group aims to strengthen andpromote humanities programming on the LowerEastern Shore.Since first convening in October 2015, the

group has met several times to explore how wemight achieve strength in numbers. At the table

are representatives from Salisbury University, theUniversity of Maryland Eastern Shore and Wor-Wic Community College; local public schoolsystems; and regional libraries, historical societiesand museums. We have discussed ways to help one another:

through the placement of interns, promotion ofone another’s programs, and development of awebsite and other means of promotinghumanities-related programming. This presentsan opportunity for the University to engage withthe community to relate the humanities toeveryday life in the region. The activities we promote get people out of

their homes and talking with one another in waysthat build and strengthen communities. We alsosupport innovation and creative programming,

bringing philosophy to elementary schoolstudents, for example, or to prison inmates. Evenif we carry out these activities anyway, theworking group enables us to share our triumphsand challenges with supportive colleagues.We are one of six regional working groups in

the country, and our NHA colleagues tell us weare furthest along in development of a trulyeffective coalition that is able to articulate how thehumanities are vital to communities.
