Exalted RulerBinding us through Elkdom.

I want to THANK everyone who participated in our first Saturday Initiation. It was very successful, the new members felt welcomed, and learned about our different activities, mingled with existing Elks, and some even supported one of our Charter Boy Scout Troops and had their car washed. I have seen new members come up for activities and meetings. September’s initiation is at 10 am on the 28th and October is at 10 am on the 26th. Please try to attend to help us welcome our new members into the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Affection, gentleness, warmth, concern, and care are words that are associated with kindness. Being kind often requires courage and strength. Kindness is an interpersonal skill.

As Elks, there are different ways to practice kindness; a kind word, a smile or opening a door, celebrating someone you love, giving honest compliments, refusing to gossip, are all ideas about how to practice kindness and giving back to our communities. Kindness does not cost much, yet it accomplishes so much.

“An egoist lives in poverty. A kind person lives in abundance.” Maxime Lagacé

We are requesting help in sponsoring a “Trick or Treat” table in our lounge. All you have to do is show up (costume optional) and provide candy to give out. We will assign tables. Your name(s) will be on the tables.

The tables will already be decorated as our Elk Halloween Party is the night before. You can decorate your table if you prefer. We expect about 100 kids (this includes siblings!)

We would like to send out a very special “Thank You” to Sandy Rees and Thelma Darwicki for coming up with this great event for our Special Children and families.

We will provide cupcakes and juices too!

If you can sponsor a table please let Irene Imhof-Marciano (714-507-5793) [email protected] Nyada Turner (714- 504-5574) [email protected] by October 21st, 2019.

Esteemed Lecturing KnightDear Brother and Sister Elks,

The final paragraph of my charge is very meaningful. “As we pass this way but once.” Agree to disagree, greet everyone with open arms, respect one another, appreciate all of our members as we all contribute in ways that are possible in everyone’s busy life.

“As we therefore have opportunity let us do good unto others as we pass this way but once. We cannot retrace our steps nor call back the says that are gone, but the passing moment is ours long enough to grasp the hand in friendship, to lighten each others burdens and to being rest to the weary.”

This is Brotherly Love.

Thank you for your kind support and brotherhood,

Irene Imhof-MarcianoLecturing Knight

Join us in welcoming our new members to the lodge and to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. This is also a great

opportunity to share all of the amazing things that our lodge does for our community as well as inform our newly initiated Elks

of the different volunteer opportunities available at the lodge.

Bingo continues to get bigger and better for our Lodge, but like everything else, it takes bodies to make it run smoothly. Having said that, I would like members to drop by, see what we do , and maybe volunteer to help.

It is not a big commitment if you join a team you will be asked to work every 5 weeks or as often as you wish because there is always something to help out with.

If you are interested, drop by on Monday night and see how Bingo makes a difference around our Lodge and if you should decide to want to help, we will find a spot for you. Spouses are welcome to volunteer or maybe play while their spouse is volunteering.

Message from the GERDon’t be shy to publicize charitable effortsThe Lodge year is now more than half over, so it is a good time to review budget and financial matters.

Budgets and financial practices can be revised at any time to reflect changes in circumstances. I want each Lodge to make every effort to maintain a sound financial footing in order to be able to sustain itself for years to come. We owe that to our Members and to our communities.

As a matter of fact, the Lodge Auditing and Accounting Committee is required under our Statutes to conduct a review and make a report to the Lodge concerning its financial condition. Its purpose is to generate discussion as to how to plan for a Lodge’s future, and should be taken seriously.

I urge you to make sure your charitable efforts are being properly recorded and reported. For too long there has been a philosophy in many quarters that Elks do good works but don’t need the recognition. Well, we do. People take note of the charitable work fraternal organizations do. The Elks have long been recognized as a leader in charitable and benevolent efforts, but in order to keep that standing we need to document the time and treasure we are contributing. It is estimated that only a quarter to a third of reportable donations and time spent are actually reported. It does a disservice to Elkdom to not provide the best information to allow us to promote our brand.

Recognition of those who are at the forefront of civic life is always something to consider. Special events and award ceremonies are wonderful ways to recognize first responders, elected leaders, and others who would likely welcome a pat on the back. Such events are also good ways to introduce our Lodges to the community, and generate interest in others to become Members.

Remember that October is now Red Ribbon Month, during which activities are held to promote the fight against drug abuse. It is a great opportunity for our Lodges to promote our commitment to combating the scourge of illicit drug abuse.

The Great Heart of Elkdom, the Elks National Foundation, deserves the support of every Member. It is a tremendous vehicle that provides funding for so many programs of the Order, including Hoop Shoot, scholarships, grant programs, and other important undertakings. Some may not be aware, but there is a way for every Member to support the ENF in a fairly painless way: the ENF Fidelity Club. Through it, you can sign up at elks.org to make automatic recurring donations of as little as $5 per month, or $15 per quarter. All of those donations, great or small, will add up to make the ENF even stronger and more capable for the years to come.

Celebrate ENF Month! What do you think of when you think of October? We think of falling leaves, howling ghosts, and ENF Month!

This month, we’re celebrating the Foundation’s programs, program recipients, volunteers and you!

There wouldn’t be an ENF Month without your support. You made dreams come true for more than 3,100 college students. You help thousands of veterans exit or avoid homelessness. You build stronger Elks communities across the nation. This month is as much about the ENF and its programs as it is about you!

Help us grow bigger and better by joining our monthly donation program, the Fidelity Club. We’ll keep doing our part in sending students to college, housing veterans experiencing homelessness, and building stronger Elks communities, but we can’t do it without you.

Tell us how you’re celebrating ENF Month at your Lodge by sending an email to [email protected]. You may be featured on the next episode of Midday with the ENF. Tune in at enf.elks.org/Midday.

Give to the ENF with ease. Donors who join the ENF Fidelity Club, the ENF’s monthly giving program, have their names listed on our website and receive a special pin. To learn more about participating in the Fidelity Club, please visit enf.elks.org/FidelityClub.

Step Into the SpotlightThe Community Investments Program, the largest funded by the Elks National Foundation, just got a little bigger! It’s now offering the brand-new Spotlight Grant.

Every Lodge can use this $2,000 grant to shine a light on two important issues facing nearly very community—family literacy and homelessness among our nation’s veterans.

The Spotlight Grant offers seven “projects in a box.” These project plans are meant to remove the barrier of having to plan effective projects.

The need for the Spotlight Grant is clear. The National Bureau of Economic Research has shown that children whose parents have low literacy levels have a 72 percent chance of being at the lowest reading levels themselves. There are four Spotlight Grant project plans to target literacy: Warm Welcome to the Library, Suds & Stories, Imagination Library, and Community Baby Shower.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, on any given night, nearly 38,000 veterans are homeless. In partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Elks has pledged to help end veteran homelessness and ensure that every veteran has the safe, stable home they deserve. One of these three Spotlight Grant project plans will combat veteran homelessness in your community: Welcome Home, Stand Down and Adopt-A-Haven.

All Lodges are encouraged to apply for the Spotlight Grant. The Lodge does not need to meet the GER’s per-member-giving goal to receive this grant. Applications for 2019-20 Spotlight Grants are now open and will close December 31, 2019.

To learn more about the Spotlight Grant visit, enf.elks.org/SpotlightGrant.

The Elks National Foundation allocated $13.7 million this year to fund the Community Investments Program. Lodges meet local needs through grants that offer Elks opportunities to serve their community in ways that will raise the Lodge’s profile, energize the membership, encourage former members to return to the fold, and gain the notice of people who want to be part of an organization that’s doing great things. To learn more about the Community Investments Program, please visit elks.org/CIP.

Hello fellow campers,

Our September outing was in Chula Vista RV Resort and our hosts were Vivian and Jeff Gleed. I will share pictures of the outing in November’s Bugle.

Please remember October is for the kids, California Hawaii Elks Major Project. The annual Purple Pig Rally starts on Thursday, October 10 and runs though Sunday, October 13. The Rally Committee has been working hard all year and has planned yet again a great event for all. So if you are not staying the weekend, be sure to come up and join us in shopping, dinner and dancing. For those interested, Jim Mouth is our Karaoke DJ on Thursday with a fabulous baked potato bar to include strips of beef and chicken, chili and all the toppings to put on top. Of course no meal is complete without salad, dinner roll and dessert. Friday is theme night, County Western, with baked fried chicken, cowboy beans, coleslaw, corn bread and dump cake for dessert. Our entertainment is Stage Robbers, so be sure to wear your western dance shoes. Saturday is theme night, Rock ‘n Roll with American Made, Dinner is smoked tri-tip, roasted potatoes, green beans, dinner salad, rolls and dessert. This meal is going to be prepared by the Hilltoppers with Ken Meehan as head chef and Clare Johnson as his assistant. Be sure to wear your 50’s/60’s attire. Looking forward in seeing you all there!

Grand Lodge NewsIt’s possible to both honor history and pass the torch

By Daniel J. CapellaCommittee Member

As many of us grow older, and as our minds create more and more memories, we find great pleasure in reminiscing to anyone within earshot.

Truth be told, many Elks like to play “Once upon a time,” where we begin to tell our captive audience about how things used to be when we first joined our beloved Order. Sometimes, those who listen are shocked because they really believe we are older than dirt and shouldn’t be able to remember anything, or they become confused because they can’t fully comprehend what we are talking about.

This often happens when we tell our new Members about the Ritual and the many changes that have occurred over the years. Recently initiated Members typically ask questions such as,

“Officers had to memorize what?” “Why?” “What is Thanatopsis?” (This might be a good one to look up) That same look of disbelief also occurs when they see pictures of Elks from decades ago when men always wore suits and ties and women wore long dresses to our official Elks functions and social affairs, or even pictures from a short time ago in which there are no females in the Lodge officer portraits simply because there were no female Members.

Today’s Elkdom is different than the Elkdom of years past, and there’s an ongoing difference of opinion regarding whether today is the best of times or the worst. This is a debate that can’t be won simply because there is merit on both sides, which means we need to find a common ground somewhere between yesterday and today. It is essential that we blend our traditions and customs with a more enlightened manner or forward-looking system of operation that appeals to our entire membership.

Undoubtedly, the past is deserving of respect. Our organization would not be in existence today if not for the “Jolly Corks” and the other architects who established our framework, beliefs, and sense of direction and dedication since the very beginning. Although we sometimes question those who represent the “this is the way we have always done it” group, we must certainly respect their time, work, and perseverance. Their efforts have kept many Lodges afloat.

However, we must also realize that today’s America has changed tremendously since 1868. Heck, it has changed greatly in the last thirty years. It is therefore necessary to accept that the education, ideas, technological abilities, understanding of media, and commitment of our younger Elks are valuable assets that should be tapped for the good and continuation of our Lodges.

Many of today’s new Members have much to contribute, but this will not occur if they are not given the chance to participate and assume responsibility. When ignored, many individuals just give up and drop out. Consequently, common sense dictates that we should prepare our new Members for the future through the process of inclusion, not exclusion. Bringing them into our programs and operations and giving their suggestions a try is necessary. After all, like it or not, the reins of control will eventually be inherited by others. It’s better to pass the torch to those with whom we have worked, mentored, encouraged, and made connections.
