Advice as to Choice of Schools.
HE SCHOLASTIC, CLERICAL AND MEDICAL
ASSOCIATION, Limited, supplies, without charge, in- formation and advice as to (i) Preparatory Schools; (2) Public Schools; (3) Army Tutors; (4) Tutors preparing for University or other Examinations ; (5) Schools or Tutors in France, Germany or Switzerland receiving pupils for the holidays or for a longer period ; (6) Boarding Schools for girls in England or on the Continent ; (7) Private families taking entire charge of infants or elder children. In order that the Manager may be able to render effective assistance to parents or guardians in the choice of a School, it is essential that he should be supplied with the fullest possible particulars of their requirements. It is desirable in all cases to know the age of the pupil for whom a School or Tutor is sought. Where a Preparatory School is needed, it is useful to know for which Public School preparation is needed. Further points on which information should be supplied are (1) the career or examination, if any, for which the pupil is preparing; (2) the locality or situation to which preference would be given ; and (3), within certain limits, the fees for board and tuition which a parent expects to pay.
All communications should be addressed to the Manager

PREFACE.
In the lists of Officers serving in India, which are contained in pages 7 to 104 of this volume, only substantive appointments are shown ; and, except in the case of members of the Indian Civil Service, the names of Officers drawing substantive pay of less than Rs. 500 a month are not included. The names shown in italics are those of Officers who are in foreign service, supernumerary, seconded, or employed outside their own departments.
The principle of selection followed in the Record of Services (pages 423 to 653) is explained on page 421.
To meet the difficulty that arises from the lack of uniformity in India in the use of surnames, Indian names are twice indexed, and cross references are made in the Record of Services. Rulers of States are also shown under the names of their States.
A list of recipients of the Kaisar-iHind Gold Medal will be found on page 172.
The u Index of Subjecti and Appointments " is on pages iii to xiii, and the "Index of Names" on pages 661 to 701. Names in the Honours Lists and Record of Services are shown in the Index of Names by "ft" and "ft," with a foot-note referring to the Alphabetical Lists on jages 154 to 171 and pages 423 to 653.
A Casualty List (Retirements and Deaths) is given on pages 654 to 660.
It is requested that intimations of errors in the lists, or of omissions, may be addressed to the Editor of the India List, India Office, London, S.W.
