Full speed towards a fossil
free transport sector?- Perspectives on gasification based biofuels and the role of pilot and
demonstration plants
Arken, Göteborg, 2016-02-03
Ambitious national targets and visions
• “Fossil-independent” vehicle fleet reached in year 2030
• No net emissions of CO2 in year 2050
• ”Sweden will take the lead to be the first fossil-free country in the world” – Stefan Löfven, Swedish prime minister

50 TWh biomass = approx 25 TWh biofuels
= 1/3 of todays oil use for transportation
Biomass gasification is a key technology
• Good technical progress during 2015:
• GoBiGas:• Continuous operation of the GoBiGas plant 25/11-25/1.
• During second half of 2015, the GoBiGas plant was operated approx. 2900 hours reaching a plant availability exceeding 70%
• 30 GWh of bio-SNG was delivered during 2015 (11.5 GWh only in December)
• LTU Green Fuels:• Successful co-gasification trials using blends of pyrolysis liquid and black
liquor
• Co-gasification operation during 500 hours with subsequent bioDMEproduction during more than 400 hours
SFC - A Centre of Excellence
• Strengthen and coordinate Swedish gasification R&D
• Foster a new generation of gasification competence in Swedish academy and industry
• Serve as a national network for knowledge
transfer and problem solving within the
field of gasification
• Facilitate commercialization of advanced
biomass gasification
SFC - A Centre of Excellence
• The total budget is approx. 57 million Euro over 10 years. 23 companies, 8 universities and 2 institutes participate
• Extensive experimental activities from lab-scale to demonstration scale
• Information exchange, education and creation/exploitation of synergies
• Networking and collaboration with other research programs is of great importance

• Renewable fuels will be part
of a future energy system –
current production capacity is
low.
• Reaching sustainable systems
is complex, and demands for
energy and climate efficiency
are high.
• Swedish research and
industry have strong
positions in renewable
transportation fuels.
• They have joined forces to
boost analyses and
interaction in the area.
The drivers of the f3 centre...
Renewable alternatives to fossil based fuels
f3 provides scientifically founded decision support by
• Complementing and system oriented R&D projects
• Evaluative syntheses of current R&D&D, policy and biofuel status internationally
• Communication, internally and externally
Five project areas
• Comprehensive technological, economical and/or environmental system studies
• Stakeholder, policy and strategy studies
• Comparative system studies
• Process integration and efficiency improvement potentials
• Knowledge synthesis
