What does it mean to be College Ready?
According to the Achieve American Diplomatic Project Network, college readiness “means that that a high school graduate has the English and mathematics knowledge and skills necessary to qualify for and success in entry level, credit- bearing college courses without the need for remedial work.”
Educational Policy Improvement Center (EPIC) defines college readiness as having “key
cognitive strategies that include analysis, interpretations, precision and accuracy, problem solving and reasoning…Similarly important are the attitudes and behavioral attributes that students who succeed in college must demonstrate. Among these are student skills, time management, awareness of one’s performance, persistence, and the ability to utilize study groups.”

Curriculum in Action: Elevator Pitches! Profile A
John is a 23 year old recent graduate of Penn State with a degree in Political Science. He is currently serving as a City Year corps member at an urban high school in Washington, D.C. As his year of service comes to a close, he is developing an interest in environmental law. After receiving an invitation to a family dinner from his roommate and fellow City Year corps member, John remembers that his roommate’s uncle is a partner at a leading environmental law firm in D.C. John believes that his skill sets of critical thinking and analytical writing, among others, could be an asset to such a firm. He thinks this dinner could be a great opportunity to inquire about a potential paralegal role at the firm.
Profile B Jade is a 22 year old working towards her
master’s degree in cosmetic chemistry at NYU. She is currently interning as a chemist at L’Oreal. She has developed two concepts for new products that are currently in the works. Jade’s manager and fellow interns see her as an innovative team member that possesses strong project management skills. Her dream career would be to work as a cosmetic chemist in a leading makeup company such as L’Oreal. L’Oreal has acquired Kiehl’s and is looking for seasoned chemists with 3-5 years of experience. Jade knows that the Head of HR at L’Oreal is an NYU grad and she is thinking of asking her for some advice…
