The Management Plus Program (MPP) is pleased once again to provideManitoba producers with it’s annual risk area variety performance and acreageinformation for spring wheat, barley, oats, flax, argentine canola, and field peas.

This year, our Management Plus data is being supplemented with moreinformation in a new format. Distribution has been made possible through thesponsorship of the Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council (MRAC), the Manitoba Co-operator, Manitoba Crop Insurance Corporation (MCIC) and Manitoba Agricultureand Food (MAF).

In order for a variety’s information to be listed in a table, the variety must havebeen sown by at least three producers on a minimum of 500 acres. Additionally, tables are limited to the 46 major varieties present in an area when the number ofvarieties grown in that area exceed that amount. Also note that the reported yieldshave not been adjusted for quality. A MCIC risk area map is illustrated on page 4to assist you in locating your risk area.

The 1999 growing season generally got off to a late start due to a cool and wetspring. Except for an increase in GMO canola acreage, producers selected more-or-less the same varieties to grow in 1999 as they did in 1998. Due to the wetspring, predominately in the SW region, over one million acres were left unplanted.Fortunately, dry and warm late fall conditions, into November, allowed most fieldsthat had a late start to be harvested.

Surprisingly, given the late plantings and moderate growing conditions, provincial yields were above average.

In particular, canola benefited from the good moisture and moderatetemperatures by producing record yields. However, it is important to remember thatthe process of averaging does not recognize lost production from unplantedacreage and obscures the poor yields obtained by some producers and some areas.

The variety yield information listed in the tables is a compilation of the actual on-farm yields reported to MCIC by the producers in their respective risk areas. Theregional extremes of 1999 (excess rain, late seeding, unusually high levels ofdisease, frost damage, and delayed harvest) have challenged the performance ofmany varieties. Because of these challenges, reviewing variety performance in 1999can be particularly enlightening.

It is important to remember that management and environmental influences havenot been standardized in the variety yield tables so producers need to exercisecaution when doing cross-variety comparisons, particularly when there is limitedacreage or years of information. Cross-variety comparisons are most credible whenthey are conducted between varieties grown on large acreages over many years.

Please note that these data tables are provided for information purposes onlyand that the information provided is not a recommendation.

If you would like to see additional variety information, or have any questions onthe Management Plus Program in general, please contact your local MAFRepresentative or Farm Business Management Specialist.

Influence of Crop Rotation on Wheat Yields in Manitoba

According to Bourgeois & Entz (1996) although the rotational benefits of non-cereal crops prior to wheat has been observed on small plots, fewquantitative studies are available at the field scale. This graph summarized the yield data reported to MCIC between 1982 and 1993 from fields 160acres in size throughout agro-Manitoba. During this period, the yield of wheat following flax, peas and canola was on average 16%, 11% and 8%higher, respectively, than wheat following wheat. In one year (1987) the yield of wheat increased an average of 41% following a field pea crop.

Mean wheat: yield in differentcrop sequences, averaged overthe period 1982 to 1993, inManitoba. (Bourgeois & Entz,1996, Canadian Journal of PlantScience. 76:457-459.)
