The Library is open to all members of Christ’s College, whether students, Fellows or staff, and to external researchers by appointment. Our holdings comprise modern books in the Reading Room and bookstacks, together with historic collections in the Old Library. We are located in Bath Court, just off First Court, with a separate Law Reading Room on K Staircase.

Opening Hours Working Library The Working Library is open to College members 24 hours a day; access is via University card. It is home to some 60,000 modern (post-1900) books. A self-issue system enables books to be borrowed at any time. We are available in the Library Office between 9am and 5pm, Mondays to Fridays. Law Reading Room The Law Reading Room is also accessed by University card and open 24 hours a day. It houses law journals and reports for reference only; law textbooks can be found in the Working Library. Only those studying Law will automatically be granted access; others wishing to consult its collections should contact Library staff. Old Library The Old Library houses the College’s special collections totalling around 50,000 items. It is not open for browsing but members of College and visiting researchers seeking access can make an appointment with Library staff during office hours. Its holdings are diverse, ranging from medieval and modern manuscripts to first editions of Milton and Darwin. There is also a substantial collection of personal papers belonging to former College Fellows. Exhibitions and special events are held throughout the year. Please ask Library staff for details.

Working Library Collections

Books The Library aims to supply all books needed for Part I courses, and as much provision for Part II and postgraduate courses as possible. Books are housed in the Reading Room and on two floors of bookstacks below. In addition, some books are housed in a store, indicated by the location “Annexe” in the catalogue. We will be happy to retrieve these for you.

Periodicals and Other Resources The Library subscribes to a small number of periodicals and there is also a sizable collection of DVDs for both study and recreation. Both are located in the Reading Room. For medical students, there is a skeleton on Floor 3; those wishing to take a closer look can sign out the key at the Porters’ Lodge. For those interested in music, there is a large collection of sheet music and scores on Floor 2 and a music hire library containing hundreds of scores and parts. Sets can be borrowed free of charge by members of College. See www.christs.cam.ac.uk/current-students/music-hire-library.

Reference Books The majority of books in the Library are borrowable. There is, however, a small reference section at the front of the Reading Room housing books for use in the Library only. These are dictionaries, encyclopædias and past University examination papers. Throughout the bookstacks you will also see some books clearly marked “Reference Only”. This is to ensure that there is always a copy of certain core texts available for consultation. Unauthorised removal of these, or any other library book, will result in a £35 fine per item being added to your College bill.

Electronic Resources A huge array of ebooks, ejournals and databases are provided by the University Library, covering all subjects. Many are accessible through the library catalogue (http://search.lib.cam.ac.uk) or at www.lib.cam.ac.uk/eresources.

Finding Items

All items in the Working Library are searchable in the online catalogue at http://search.lib.cam.ac.uk. This database searches across all of the University’s libraries but you can limit your search to Christ’s by using the filter option.

Recommending Books

Throughout the year, we check reading lists from all departments to ensure the Library is as well-stocked as possible. If you find books lacking in certain sections, do let library staff know and we will endeavour to purchase them. You can either complete a suggestion form (to the right of the red suggestions box in the Reading Room), use the form on the library website, or email suggestions to [email protected].

Borrowing

Loans All student members may borrow up to 15 items at one time. Loans are issued for two weeks and may be renewed three times. Renewals can be made online via http://search.lib.cam.ac.uk by following the link to “My library account”. After three renewals items must be returned to the Library. Issuing Items The Library operates a self-issue system; books can be issued using one of the self-issue terminals located by the entrance to the Reading Room.

Returns Please return books using the self-issue terminals at the entrance to the Library. Once returned, place them on one of the trolleys marked “Returned books” to the left of the terminals. Recalls If you want to borrow an item which is on loan to another member, use the “place a recall” option on the catalogue. This will generate an email to the current borrower asking them to return the book within three days. Books requested will be placed on the holds shelf for collection just inside the door to the Reading Room. Books in Use If you wish to return to the Library to continue using books, please leave a “books in use” slip, clearly dated and stating your name, in the top book of the pile. 5 books may be left for 3 days before they will be reshelved. If more than 5 books are left, all will be reshelved. Slips are located on top by the suggestions box. Fines Fines are charged at 25p per item per day (50p if the book has been recalled). They are payable during office hours by cash or can be added to your College bill. Lost Items If you lose an item belonging to the Library, please let us know as soon as possible and we will arrange for a replacement to be purchased. Please do not provide a replacement yourself as we need to ensure editions are matched correctly.

You are advised to take your valuables with you when you leave the Library. Water A water cooler is available in the locker room.
