BUSINESS SPOTLIGHTby Marcy Lee

IF YOU HAVEN’T been to Kudzu lately, you’re in for a surprise. Atlanta’s old-est antique store has transformed itself into a full-service furniture store with new selec-tions of furniture, lighting, accessories, and special-order sofas to complement the tra-ditional mix of antiques and vintage. “We looked around and realized there simply weren’t any interesting furniture stores in our area, so we decided to create a unique mix of old and new, and it has really taken off,” says co-owner Kate Lawes. “We are building on the success of our store in Sandy Springs, Kudzu and Company, which sells more new than old and has built a strong following with designers and decorators from all around Atlanta.”

Kate and her husband, George, have rebranded the Decatur store as Kudzu Antiques + Modern and filled it with a care-fully curated mix of contemporary furniture and lighting from some of the industry’s best manufacturers. “We still have 75 of Atlanta’s best vintage dealers, but we are cre-ating a new look that reflects today’s trends, is not something you see everywhere, and delivers value for the money,” says George. “Kudzu is no longer just an antique store,

Kudzu Antiques Adds Contemporary Mixbut a full-service home store with every-thing from sofas to gifts. When people walk in, they are amazed at the diverse selection. We’re even selling fashion now, and our women customers love it,” says Kate.

One walk through Kudzu will convince you of that. There are still lots and lots of great vintage and antique items, enough to satisfy any “antique-aholic,” but round a corner and you feel like you’re in some hip new furniture boutique. And the selection is really interesting, much more so than most furniture stores. “One advantage we have,” notes George, “is our access to items from all over the world. We direct import containers of industrial style furniture our-selves, and we travel regularly to Europe looking for unique vintage items to mix into our showroom of new merchandise. That gives us a look that no one can match.”

“And we’re continually expanding our gift and accessories lines,” adds Kate. “It’s hard to find an interesting gift these days, and we think we can fill that need.”

That may be one of the most fun things about walking through the “new” Kudzu – you’re continually surprised by what comes next. And with almost 25,000 square feet to shop, you’re bound to find something you just have to take home. “We want peo-ple to feel that every time they come they’re going to find something different, and to love what we do so much that they’ll bring their family and friends the next time,” says Kate. “And they do.”

OFFICIAL GUIDE

Decatur’s Music Festival is Back.IN 2016, THE AMPLIFY Decatur Music Festival debuted on the downtown square with enthusiastic crowds and a full day of music from the likes of The Milk Carton Kids, Elephant Revival and more.

Best of all, the event raised $30,000 to support Decatur Coopera-tive Ministry’s (DCM) efforts to prevent and alleviate homelessness in Decatur and DeKalb County.

The Amplify Decatur Music Festival returns in 2017 with Lucinda Williams as its headliner. Williams, who has won three Grammy Awards and been nomi-nated for 12 more, received the label “America’s Best Songwriter” from Time magazine in 2002.

Williams has been touring in support of 2016’s The Ghosts of Highway 20. In a review of Ghosts, Spin mag-azine described her as, “honing her beautiful, stately melodies through a ragged voice and arrow-headed lyrics about unkept secrets and roadside tears.”

The Amplify Decatur Music Festival will also feature performances by Noah Gundersen, John Moreland, Harold Holloway & Company, Packway Handle Band and Kristen Englenz & The Committed. In addition, Eddie’s Attic will host a series of Amplify Decatur shows April 21-23 (featuring Billy Joe Shaver, Caroline Herring, and Scott Miller, among others) and a Bob Dylan vs. The Band cover night on

April 30. (More on page 20).The Amplify Decatur Concert Series is produced

by Amplify My Community, a nonprofit organiza-tion based in Decatur. “Amplify exists to support and to shine a spotlight on the remarkable work of local heroes like the people at DCM,” Amplify Board Chair Drew Robinson says.

The Amplify Decatur Concert Series is again presented by Lenz Marketing and produced in partnership with Eddie’s Attic. As always, every dollar raised at Amplify Decatur will be directed to Decatur Cooperative Ministry.

Since 2010, Amplify has produced more

than 50 concerts and donated more than $210,000 in unrestricted gifts

to locally oriented anti-homelessness

and poverty-focused organizations

LUCINDA WILLIAMSBy Mike Killeen

LUCINDA WILLIAMS RECENTLY told Rolling Stone magazine of an early meeting with a Columbia Records executive. “He said, ‘You have a lot of potential, but you need to work on your songs. None of them have bridges.’ After the meeting, I got out my Bob Dylan and Neil Young albums. I said, ‘These songs don’t have bridges either. So f*#@ that guy.’”

Williams has always recognized the signal from the noise. That’s one reason she’s earned unbridled adula-tion from fans and artists alike for more than 30 years.

Many were introduced to Lucinda Williams via Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, the 1998 album that earned a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and universal praise from music critics the worldwide (Car Wheels landed at number 305 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 best albums of all time).

But by then, those in the know already recognized Williams as one her generation’s most vital artists and a leader of the “alt-country” movement she helped create, thanks to her eponymous 1988 breakthrough album and 1992’s Sweet Old World. By the time Essence was released in 2001, Time magazine also had Williams in its sites, calling her “America’s best songwriter” the following year.

Part of Williams’ appeal is how she seamlessly blends the honored traditions of folk, country, and blues while introducing a sensibility that feels entirely her own. Perhaps this can be traced to her upbringing. Her father was Miller Williams, a literature professor and poet who read his poem “Of History and Hope” – contain-ing the line “We know the sound of all the sounds we brought” – at Bill Clinton’s 1997 inauguration. Lucinda Williams followed her dad’s teaching job across the

Lucinda Williams headlines the 2017 Amplify Decatur Music Festival on Saturday, April 22. Lucinda and her band will go on around 9:15 p.m.

Southeast, with stays in Louisiana, Missis-sippi, Arkansas, and Georgia. Later, under her own volition, she settled first in New Orleans, then Austin, then New York City, and finally Los Angeles, where her passion for music became a formal pursuit.

Today, Williams says she is writing and singing better than she ever has, and it’s hard to argue. She is surely more prolific. Once known for her measured perfection-ism (it took 11 years for her to release the consecutive albums, Lucinda Williams, Sweet Old World, and Car Wheels on a Gravel Road ), Williams’ most recent release, Ghosts of Highway 20, represented her second dou-ble album in a span of just 18 months, following 2014’s Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone. Both belong to Williams’ newly formed record label, Highway 20 Records, perhaps offering a bit of sym-metry for an artist who has always been truly independent.

Band ProfilesNoah Gundersen

Noah Gundersen’s latest release, Carry the Ghost, explores issues of self-discovery and existentialism with an erudite sophistication across 13 magnificent tracks. Collaborat-ing more than ever before with his touring band—which includes his sister Abby and brother Jonathan—Gundersen set out to push boundaries and confound expectations, experimenting with tone and structure and creating rich sonic textures that ebb and flow beneath his stirring, solemn voice.

“The album grew out of a desire to know myself, to know how I was supposed to live,” he explains. “And in that process, I realized that maybe there is no ‘supposed to be.’ The concept of Carry the Ghost is that we’re made by our experiences, and to accept that instead of fighting it. The last several years have been a process of accept-ing things as they are and to not see them as so black and white or right or wrong—to accept that we’re not made to be a certain way, but that we are involved in an ongoing process of becoming.”

John Moreland

Things changed for John Moreland as a teenager when we put hardcore punk aside and picked up his dad’s records: artists like Credence Clearwater Revival, Neil Young, Tom Petty, and Steve Earle. He hasn’t looked back. The Tulsa, Oklahoma, native wowed listeners with In the Throes in 2013, earning his music regular placements on FX’s Sons of Anarchy and public praise from Rachel Maddow, of all people, who tweeted, “If the American music business made any sense, guys like John Moreland would be household names.” Moreland likes to say that it’s the first time his dad agreed with Maddow on anything. Moreland returned in 2015 with High on Tulsa Heat, a criti-cally acclaimed album that the New York Times called “starkly elegant, addressing sadness with clarity and directness.” In sup-port of the album, Moreland hit the road with Jason Isbell, Patty Griffin and Dawes, among others.

Kristen Englenz & The Committed

Kristen’s first EP, The Extent of Play, was recorded at studi-laroche by Atlanta sound engineer Benjamin Price (Little Tybee, Chris Stalcup & The Grange). “The Extent of Play has a genuinely appealing quality, absent from nearly every other local release in this genre,” according to Jeff Clark of Stomp and Stammer.

Packway Handle Band

The long-running bluegrass band from Athens’s latest release, Take It Like a Man, was developed alongside producer and col-laborator, the folk surrealist Jim White. Most accustomed to playing clubs, Packway Handle Band landed on a tour with Kid Rock and Foreigner for 40 amphitheater shows—10-consecutive sold-out shows at the DTE Energy Music Theater in Detroit. After the tour wrapped, Packway played the industry-focused, Americana Music Festi-val in Nashville, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco, California. At long last, the boys are back in Georgia gearing up to hit the studio and record a new album.

Harold Holloway & Company

The four harmonious voices of Harold Hol-loway, Willie Henderson, Tim Parker, and Richard Phillips make up the sound of Harold Holloway & Company. The group has a unique and soulful presence, integrat-ing urban neo-soul with the down-home syncopated rhythms of traditional gospel. The highlight of their 2016 tour was a show-stopping performance at the Gospel tent at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Look for their latest live recording from Atlanta, Georgia, on Crew Records featuring the single, “Never Had a Doubt.”

Strengthening the Community for All of UsBy John Manasso

DECATUR COOPERATIVE Ministry Executive Director Marlene White says the face of homelessness is not what one might expect. She says employed people with college degrees are included among those who have turned to the nonprofit’s shelters recently. She mentioned a woman with a job as a medical assistant and another with a bachelor’s degree who works at a local nonprofit.

“The challenge is that families that find themselves without housing in this economy have such a difficult time because there are challenges to getting a living wage and there are challenges to identifying affordable hous-ing,” says White, whose organization works to alleviate the problems of homelessness in the City of Decatur and in DeKalb County.

DCM, which was founded in 1969 and operates as a consortium of more than 35 congregations encompassing 14 different denominations, offers a multitude of services and programs. As has been the case since its inception in 2010, DCM is the beneficiary of the Amplify Decatur Concert Series. Last year, Amplify Decatur raised $30,000 for DCM, and the hope is to better that amount in 2017.

In a given year, DCM supports about one thousand people, White said. It runs four food cooperatives (two of them are housed in Decatur churches) and has four different programs that it operates.

• The Family House Transitional Program provides housing and support services to move families from homelessness to self-reliance in six months.

• Another program, Hagar’s House Emergency Shelter and Assessment Center, helps victims of domestic violence and their children, providing at least 30 nights of short-term housing.

• A program aimed at helping to prevent homeless is called “Project Take Charge.” It provides emergency assistance (in the form of rent/mortgage, utilities and food along with financial education) to those in danger of eviction, foreclosure or disconnection of utility service.

• Via its “End Veteran Homelessness” pro-gram, DCM helps to administer funds from the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help prevent military veterans from becoming homeless. DCM teams up with the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta and the United Way of Greater Atlanta in this endeavor. DCM provides food, the United Way provides housing

and the Furniture Bank provides the veterans with job training.

In all, White said DCM helps about 150 veteran families annually. Homelessness, she adds, is a result of many different factors.

“We have housing programs and home assistance programs all along the continuum of homeless service,” says White, who has been with DCM for eight years, including four as executive director.

Since 2011, Amplify has raised and donated more than $100,000 to DCM.

White wishes to thank this year’s fes-tival attendees. “By joining us at Amplify Decatur, you are making a real difference in people’s lives,” she says. “I see it every day.”

YOUR CHILDBy Jane Wilkov, M.D.

Spring Is in the Air… Along with PollenSPRINGTIME CONJURES UP images of happy kids playing outside. In Georgia it also signals the beginning of allergy sea-son. Most noticeable is the yellow-green pine pollen that is everywhere. This is quite a nuisance and often irritating, but in actu-ality it is the smaller tree pollens, and then the grass pollens, that cause more true aller-gic symptoms. Children love being outside (literally playing in the grass) and propor-tionally breathe in more air than adults, along with more pollen.

Whether as an irritant or from a true aller-gic reaction, pollen is responsible for seasonal symptoms such as itchy nose and/or throat, nasal congestion, clear runny nose, red itchy eyes, coughing, and rashes. For many children the measures below will be enough. Oth-ers, especially those with an allergic immune

response and /or asthma may require medical evaluation and prescription medication.

Reduce Exposure, Stay Inside - The best way to treat symptoms is to avoid exposure in the first place when possible. Follow pollen counts, and when they rise keep kids indoors as much as possible. Peak times are usually mid-morning, early evening, and when the wind is blowing.

Keep Cool - When the weather is hot, keep your house and car windows closed and use air-conditioning.

Wash Up - Kids should be reminded to wash their hands or shower and change clothing after playing outside.

OTC Medications - If reducing exposure isn’t possible or is ineffective, medicines can help ease symptoms. Many are available over the counter. These may include decongestants, antihistamines, eye drops and nasal spray. More severe symptoms (such as wheezing) need medical attention.

Don’t let the pollen ruin springtime in Decatur.

LOCAL EVENTby Marcy Lee

GEORGIAN ARCHITECTURE from the 1920s, lovingly restored and renovated century-old homes that meld function with history, family heirlooms and antiques dating back to the Civil War, an outdoor oasis that includes hydroponic garden, tree house and barnyard…these are some of the inspiring features you can explore at the 2017 Druid Hills Tour of Homes & Gardens and Makers Market April 21-23.

“The vibrant tradition continues as the historic Druid Hills neighborhood wel-comes neighbors and visitors alike to tour homes featuring architecture from renowned architects, experience award winning inte-rior design, enjoy Southern Fare, hear local musicians, see Georgia artists and explore Emory Village. ‘History Happens Here’ through the vibrant community culture of Druid Hills where tour goers will find inspi-ration, celebration, and a focus on preserving and extending the vision of noted landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted,” says Ryan Graham, chairperson, Druid Hills Civic Association Tour Committee.

One of the longest running and premiere tour of homes in the nation, the 2017 Druid Hills Tour of Homes & Gardens and Mak-ers Market celebrates its 49th year with six homes and one garden that feature the work of master renovators and landscape designers:

Druid Hills Welcomes Neighbors and Visitors2017 Druid Hills Tour of Homes & Gardens and Makers Market April 21-23.

• 834 Lullwater Road, Honora and Dan Hand-ley: One of Druid Hills’ finest examples of the Georgian style, this home encompasses more than 9,000 square feet and was built between the years 1924-1928.

• 1250 Fairview Road, Stephanie and John Gieg-erich: This 1918 home required extensive reno-vations and landscaping but revealed a rich his-tory in the process.

• 928 Oakdale Road, Charlie Andrews and Burt Tillman: The style of the house, which dates to 1921, is a uniquely eclectic mix of European and traditional details.

• 1017 Oxford Road, Drs. Shannon and James Hamrick: This circa 1920s home is filled with family heirlooms and antiques dating from the 1860s through the 1920s.

• 1125 Oxford Road, Sarah and Scott Ellyson: From the dramatic tiled wall entry to the well appointed spaces, this circa 1923 home blurs the lines between old and new. The recent renovation was a HammerSmith project.

• 1371 North Decatur Road, Emily and Andrew Webb: Built in 1922 at a cost of $7,000, this property remained in the original owner’s family until 1983. The architect of the home is believed to be Leila Ross Willburn, the leading female architect in Atlanta who was known for her mail order plan books.

• 1022 Lullwater Road, Julia Roberts (Garden open for tours Saturday only): Tucked far at the top of the property is hydroponic garden where Quoi and Tilapia comingle under a waterfall. The fish waste, ammonia and nitrogen, are an ideal fertilizer for the garden where the water is cycled through the beds and returned fresh and clean to the pond. In return, everything from strawberries to banana trees and wintering geraniums grow to exceptional size.

The tour will also feature a series of free events open to the public at Emory Village and throughout the neighborhood including:

• Makers Market on Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. featuring artwork, jewelry, clothing, furniture, handmade items, baked goods and sculpture of Atlanta artists; Slice & Pint Parking Lot

• Local Bands on Saturday 6–10 p.m. featuring music by the Druid Hills Youth Showcase, and later in the evening, the Tour welcomes back Bradley Cole Smith, the well-known leader of Doublewide, mixing original music with crowd pleaser covers ranging from Van Morrison and The Stones, to Elvis and Three Dog Night.

• Patch Dash 5K Fun Run/Walk and Tot Trot on Sunday 8 a.m. (proceeds benefit Press On To Cure Childhood Cancer: www.PressOnFund.org)

• CDC Museum Tour on Friday, 11-12:30 (complimentary shuttle departs from Slice & Pint Parking Lot at 10:30 a.m.; advance registration requested via the tour website and photo ID required)

• Bike rentals and walking maps available at Will Call / Slice & Pint Parking Lot

• Lullwater Preservation Garden Plant Sale offering native perennials suited to Atlanta’s climate and drought-tolerant succulents as well as a variety of heirloom tomato plants. All proceeds will benefit the Lullwater Conservation Garden, Inc., which recently launched an ambitious revitalization of the 6.5-acre garden that it has tended since 1931.

For more information, visit DruidHillsTour.org.

TIMES, TICKETS AND TROLLEYSTimes: The tour events take place Friday, April 21, 1-5 p.m.; Saturday, April 22,

10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and Sunday, April 23, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Tickets: Individual ($25) and discounted group tickets ($20 for groups of six or more) may be purchased in advance on the website: DruidHillsTour.org. COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHTby Erin Murphy

HAS YOUR CHILD ever come home from school super-excited to tell you about the cool thing they did in class? Chances are if you live in Decatur, the answer is yes. Thanks to the support of a generous community of donors, Decatur Education Foundation has funded over $30,000 in Teacher Innovation Grants since August 2016. Since it was founded in 2002, DEF has awarded over $300,000 in teacher grants that encourage City Schools of Deca-tur’s teachers to dream up creative ways to engage and support students at every grade level and meet the needs of all Decatur kids.

This year’s grants supported projects in technology, the arts, mentoring, special learning needs, STEAM education, literacy, physical health and development, diversity and so much more. One grant helped local Pre-K classrooms design a woodworking learning center that is safe and hands-on.

By supporting great teachers, we can impact kids across the community and give them great opportunities for enrichment and skill development. DEF’s support of teachers is a direct result of the generous donor con-tributions. They have created a simple way for people to honor the great teachers in their lives with a tribute gift to DEF. The annual Step Up for Teachers campaign launches on April 1, 2017. You can help support Deca-tur’s teachers by making a gift in honor of a great educator in your student’s life. When you make a contribution to the Step Up for Teachers campaign, you may also post a tribute message on the DEF website for a teacher. The teachers are then notified when a tribute in their honor is posted. You will also receive a Step Up for Teachers yard sign to proudly display on your front lawn. It is truly heart-warming to see all of the signs popping up in yards throughout the city in support of our amazing teachers.

To learn more and make your tribute gift, please visit StepUpforTeachers.com.

Foundation

The center enables some of the youngest learners to work on a project from design to build. A grant for a portable amplification system enables the high school musical the-ater group to take their show on the road to perform for local elementary school students.

DEF was also able to support the expan-sion of F.AVE’s (4/5 Academy at Fifth Ave.) after-school robotics program to accom-modate more students. With support from DEF, the group has grown to include 50 students comprising five teams, three of which have advanced to Super Regional competitions, and one team competed at the State Tournament in February. Paige Ford, F.AVE student and robotics team member shared what she loves about her robotics team: “Lego robotics was a lot more than just building and programming robots. It was learning about one another. We learned about one another’s weaknesses and strengths. We learned about each oth-er’s wants and needs. We learned to work together and persevere through the conflicts and challenges.”

YOUR NET WORTHby Denise Pajak

ARE YOU THINKING about quitting your job and running your own business? Before you do, consider the effects your new income may have on your ability to get a mortgage. Self-employed is defined as owning 25 percent or more of a business or receiving pay that is 1099’d, such as contract work. If you file a Schedule C, you will be defined as self-employed regardless of the percentage of ownership in a company

you have (such as hair stylists and real estate agents). For loan amounts of $424,000 and less, you must be self-employed for at least two years and present tax returns that reflect this income for one year along with YTD Profit and Loss and balance sheets. For larger loan amounts you need all that plus two years of taxes showing that income.

For example, if you became self-employed in March 2015 and seek a $500,000 loan, you must have filed and submitted your 2016 and 2015 taxes. The income will be averaged over the two years, even though you started in March.

If you are relocating to Decatur from a different geographic area, you have to document and explain how your income will continue at the same level or greater regardless of your new location. But if you owned a business and just physically relocated here, requiring redevelopment, that income is not eligible, such as a dentist who needs all new patients.

Learn how your self-employed income may impact your ability to get a mortgage well ahead of when you’ll need one.

Denise Pajak (NMLS#6191) is a vice president and mortgage banker at the Private Bank of Decatur (NMLS#758195). She can be reached at 678.799.4167.

YOUR SKINby Kara Brown

ACNE. IT’S UGLY. It’s life-changing. And ultimately, it can be heartbreaking. If you or someone you love is one of the more than 50 million Americans who are cur-rently struggling with acne, you know the challenges all too well. As an experienced esthetician and founder of Atlanta Acne Specialists, Teri Eastin knows firsthand the distress acne can cause. It isn’t limited to teens and can continue well into adulthood. It could be as ordinary as breakouts or as complex and long-term as adult cystic acne. Acne isn’t limited to the face, although that’s certainly the most visible and trou-bling way we all “see” acne. But outbreaks also occur across the body, including the back and chest.

Determining what your acne triggers are and how to best resolve them can be dif-ficult. Heredity and genetics likely factor into acne challenges, and the wrong hair and skincare products can complicate treat-ment. Diet has long been labeled as a cause of acne (“Don’t eat those greasy potato chips!”) but even a healthy diet can be an acne driver. No matter the cause, acne is a skin condition that requires time, patience and the right skincare products to resolve.

Traditionally, an office visit is required to determine the right type of products to treat an acne problem. But everyone is busy, and making the time to visit the Atlanta Acne Specialist office can be tough. In response to requests from her clients, Decatur-based Eastin recently launched The Virtual Clear Skin Program, a new online diagnostic tool that gives clients everywhere access to her expertise.

It’s easy. Patients start by completing the online consultation found in the Online Coaching Program page at AtlantaAcneSpe-cialists.com. Products best suited for each skin type are recommended along with sug-gested diet changes. You can access online

tutorials from anywhere and schedule check-ins with Eastin every two weeks to review progress and see what tweaks to your recommended regimen might be needed.

“Results should be seen almost immedi-ately, with clear skin in approximately six to nine months,” says Eastin. Of course, ulti-mate results depend on the commitment to following the prescribed protocols.

Best of all, in addition to resolving skin imperfections, Atlanta Acne Specialists donates 5 percent of every sale to the non-profit A Future, Not a Past, which helps prevent child trafficking in Georgia. So you

can help others while getting the complex-ion you’ve always dreamed of.

“Whether you’re looking for an acne solution for your teenager, a bride getting ready for that big day, or a longtime acne sufferer, give this online, one-on-one coach-ing program a try,” says Eastin. “Consider me your virtual skincare coach, ready to write a winning plan tailored just for you.”

Atlanta Acne Specialists is located at 465 Winn Way, Suite 160 in Decatur. For more information, visit AtlantaAcneSpecialists.com or call 404.900.5152.

YOUR MONEYby Mercedes M. Pasqualetti, MBA, EA

Planning in Uncertain TimesNO MATTER WHICH side of the political fence you sit on, one thing is for sure—this is a time of uncertainty for all of us. Being proactive is key in these times. We know tax law as it stands and have some clue as to how it may change in the next four years.

Several of the proposed changes include cutting the tax brack-ets from seven down to three, limiting itemized deductions for high-income taxpayers, elimi-nating personal exemptions and eliminating AMT (alternative minimum tax) and the additional Medicare tax. There are pros and cons to all of these proposed changes, and there is going to be much debate about how they will change the tax situation of Americans and the market in general.

Federal tax rates and brackets would be simplified down to three versus the seven today. Those with a taxable income between $0 and $37,500 ($0 to $75,000 for married filers) would be subject to a 12 percent tax rate; taxable income between $37,500-$112,500 (or $75,000-$225,000 for married filers) would be subject to a 25 percent rate. Those with tax-able income above $112,500 ($225,000+ for married filers) would be subject to a 33 percent federal tax rate.

Itemized deductions for the wealthiest Americans’ would be capped at $100,000 for single filers and twice that for those who are married. This means that wealthy couples who want to give a million dollars to charity would only be able to deduct a fifth of that versus the current 39 percent.

Two changes in the plan could increase taxes for many middle-class families.First, the proposed plan eliminates personal exemptions, which are

about $4,000 for individuals and each of their children or depen-dents. Second, it eliminates the “head of household” tax filing status that’s typically used by single parents. Consequently, millions of fami-lies with many kids — and single parents — could end up with higher taxes under President Donald Trump’s proposal, according to an anal-ysis by Lily Batchelder of the New York University School of Law.

The plan would eliminate the 3.8 percent tax on net-investment income on people with incomes (MAGI) of over $200,000 for single filers and $250,000 for married filers. The tax rates on long-term capi-tal gains would be kept at the current 0,15 and 20 percent.

The plan proposes a full repeal of the (AMT) and the estate tax. Under current law, estates valued at more than $5.45 million are subject to a

40 percent tax rate. Cutting the AMT and estate tax would stand to benefit higher income earners the most.

These changes are yet to be decided and may change greatly over the next 12 months. In the interim, you should consider consulting with an advisor who is staying abreast of the changes and who will help you navigate through them.
