James Braid (1870-1950) – The Scottish member of golf’s Great Triumvirate of him, J.H. Taylor and Harry Vardon, was born and worked as a clubmaker in Earlsferry. He was a five time winner of The Open Championship, and captured the trophy for the British PGA’s Matchplay Championship fourtimes. Upon retirement he worked as club professional and designer. He is credited as the inventor of the “dogleg”.

J.H. Taylor (1871-1963) – An English golfer born in Devon, was a pioneer of the modern game of golf and is often referred to in the company of HarryVardon and James Braid as the Great Triumvirate. He was a five time winner of The Open Championship and a co-founder and first Chairman of the BritishPGA, which, according to golf writer Bernard Darwin, "had turned a feckless company into a self-respecting and respected body of men".

Harry Vardon (1870-1937) – Born on the island of Jersey, was golf’s first “international superstar”, gaining fame as a properly dressed gentleman in abuttoned coat, shirt and tie, he toured the US by playing 80 matches, concluding with a US Open victory in 1900. He is the holder of a record six OpenChampionships and is mentioned regularly as part of the Great Triumvirate, along with J.H. Taylor and James Braid. The grip used by 90 percent of moderngolfers, in which the index finger and littler finger interlock, is still called the Vardon Grip.

Allan Robertson (1815-1859) - Considered to be the first “professional golfer”, making a living by playing for bets, caddying and making balls and clubs.Born in St. Andrews, he was the first ever to break the score of 80 on The Old Course, and it is said, was never beaten as an individual when money wason the line. Since he was considered the best golfer alive, following his death, the R&A established The Open Championship in 1860 to determine hissuccessor.

Walter Hagen (1892-1969) – From Rochester New York, was on the forefront of the development of the modern day golf professional. Said Gene Sarazen,"All the professionals ... should say a silent thanks to Walter Hagen each time they stretch a check between their fingers. It was Walter who madeprofessional golf what it is." He accumulated 45 PGA tour wins, including 11 majors, third only behind Nicklaus (18) and Woods (13), who each had theadvantage of a fourth tournament, the Masters.

Bobby Jones (1902-1971) – Legendary for his time both on and off the course, played his entire career as an amateur and retired at the age of 28. In thattime he won the US Open four times, and the Open Championship three, along with six amateur championships, which were considered “majors” at the time.He was the first to accomplish the “double” of the US and British Opens in the same year, 1926, and is still the only golfer to win the “grand slam” of the USand British Opens and Amateurs in the same year, 1930. Overall he tallied 13 majors in 20 attempts. With that track record, he is still most revered for co-designing the Augusta National course, and founding the Masters.

John Ball (1861-1940) – Would today be considered the greatest amateur of all time if not for Bobby Jones, was also the first Englishman to capture theOpen Championship in 1890. Ball captured 8 British Amateur Championships, at the time considered a major, making him the winningest player for a singleMajor Championship. He also won the Open and the Amateur in the same year, a feat only Jones has been able to match, and won his 9 Majors over thecourse of 24 years, a period of time mirrored only by the great Jack Nicklaus.

J.J. McDermott (1891-1971) – Born in Philadelphia, McDermott won the 17th US Open in 1911, making him the first American born player to do so. At theage of 19, he is still the youngest man to capture the Championship, and he successfully defended it the following year. McDermott, along with most of theearly american golfers, learned his craft as a caddy under the tutelage of Scottish Immigrants who resided in the US as the golf pros of the original AmericanCountry Clubs. His two championships, along with Francis Ouimet's in 1913 are cited as the events that sparked widespread American interest in the sport.

Willie Anderson (1879-1910) – Was raised in Scotland but emigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 17. He captured the US Open title in1901, 03, 04 and 05, making him the first player to achieve 4 Championships, a feat only accomplished by Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus. Heis also the only man to win 3 consecutive US Opens. Anderson Played in 14 straight US Opens and never finished worse than 15th. He also captured 4 WesternOpens, the second biggest US tournament in its time.

Old Tom Morris (1821-1908) - Born in St. Andrews, was an apprentice to Allan Robertson, placing second in the first Open Championship in 1860. He tookchampion honors the following years in 1861, 1862, 1864,1867, making him, still, the oldest Open Champion at 46 years of age. He was a renownedgreenkeeper and course designer, establishing the practices of, including others, top-dressing the greens, managing hazards and standardizing course lengthto 18 holes, reducing St. Andrew’s original 23. The 18th hole at the old course is named for him.
