Our Story... Glen Afric Country Lodge is situated 20 minutes from Pretoria and 40 minutes from Johannesburg in South Africa with good links from Lanseria and OR Tambo International Airports, you can leave the hustle and bustle of daily life and find yourself in front of the stunning views of the surrounding Bushveld, the magnificent Magaliesberg Mountains and the nearby Hartbeespoort Dam; it is a truly magical place.

Glen Afric itself consists of over 251 hectares of bushveld and woodland where wild animals roam free. Glen Afric also has a number of predators including lion, tiger, cheetah, hyena and leopard. Lights, Camera, Action! Our furry family are no strangers to the silver screen, Jack the Zebra, Hamley the Giraffe (tragically killed by lightning in November 2010) and Hoby Cat, the lion, have between them starred in Mr. Bones, a big screen series - Wild At Heart from the U.K., and many advertisements, and additionally our alpha male Hoby Cat, is the face on Ilala Cream Liqueur.

Established in 1982 by the Brookers, their hard work and dedication to introducing these animals, have increased the numbers and variety of species now in the area. The reserve has over 300 species of birds. Glen Afric Country Lodge is open to both day visitors and resident guests every day of the year. With an array of activities available from game drives, elephant walks, horse riding and afternoon guided walks with sundowners and barbeques on Gin and Tonic Hill, or simply sitting on the Lodge deck with binoculars watching the wildlife go by, you are never short of things to do. Glen Afric is always a sunny warm place to be - 345 days a year!

The title deeds of the original farm were registered in 1836 to brothers Piet and Bart Pretorius. A third brother, Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, first President of the Transvaal Republic, followed in the footsteps of their father, Andries Pretorius. The 'eye' of the Broederstroom (Brothers' Stream) is situated on Glen Afric, which also boasts a World Heritage Site, the Gondolin Cave, which is not accessible to the public. Gondolin is located 3.2 km south-west of Broederstroom village. Many other identified fossils from this site suggest a period of about 1.5 - 2 million years ago. About 90,000 fossil specimens have been discovered here since 1979, including an enormous molar tooth attributed to Paranthropus robustus (a robust creative akin to man). . .

Professors Dart, Tobias and others have removed many specimens dated four million years old from the site, which is said to have produced more fossils than the Sterkfontein caves. The reserve sits in the Cradle of Human Kind, a World Heritage Site which comprises of a strip of a dozen dolomitic limestone caves containing the fossilised remains of ancient forms of animals, plants and most importantly, hominins. The dolomite, in which the caves formed, started out as coral reefs growing in warm shallow seas about 2.3 billion years ago.PROOF

Our elephants Three, Marty and Hannah are very special indeed. The Brooker's received a call from the Kruger Park saying that they had found an orphan female calf that had been swept away from her mother in the heavy rains in January 2008.

The park asked if the Brooker's would take her on as they knew that Three had just had a baby. Immediate action was taken and Marty was airlifted to Glen Afric to be introduced to Three, arriving on the 22nd of January.

This is the first known time that a wild elephant had been introduced to a captive elephant. It was a very tense moment as no one was sure if she would accept Marty or not. However Three took one look at Marty and wrapped her trunk around her, welcoming her into her family. Since then, Three, Hannah and Marty have been inseparable.

Glen Afric, brainchild of John Brooker, the dynamic 'father' of commercial game capturing in South Africa, is a little slice of Eden. It has burgeoned from one farm purchased in 1985 to an area comprising 6 farms and covering 251 hectares of pristine bushveld landscape where herbivorous animals roam free.

John initiated commercial game capturing in South Africa, worked with the legendary Dr. Ian Player for the Natal Parks Board and supplied animals for the first safari park in the UK. Working in close association with veterinarians at Onderstepoort, he established a quarantine station in Honeydew which earned the stamp of approval of the USDA - United States Department of Agriculture. Amidst great international media interest he arranged a 'Rhino Wedding' at Glen Afric, and raised $1 million for the elephant contraception programme in Kruger Park. He then purchased the farm in Broederstroom to expand the facility in 1986. With a partner he started the Mabula game lodge in Bela-Bela as well as Motswari in Hoedspruit, and in 1992 the home he had built for his family on Glen Afric became a lodge which offered game drives and other activities too numerous to mention! Glen Afric has also been the stage for over 430 local and international movie, television and commercial productions. . . .
