NEWS AND INFORMATION FOR FOREIGN RESIDENTS FUENGIROLA MONTHLY Discount for people who adopt animals A CAMPAIGN has been launched to encourage people to adopt animals. People who adopt from the municipal shelter will be given a card which entitles them to 10 per cent discount on veterinary services and products. Local Councillor for Health, Carmen Diaz, said the municipal TV station had been running adverts which raise awareness amongst pet owners that abandoning their animals it not an option. She also said everything possible was being done to find homes for the animals at the shelter, located on the Cerros del Águila road. The service has been designed by local citizens to control and organise any activities carried out on the beach and deal with situations which pose a risk to people or to provide them with information. It will also control beach laws introduced this year which make the appearance of local beaches more homogenous. Locals have been asked to collaborate to make going to the beach an enjoyable experience for everyone, and to take special care about the amount of water they use in the showers. The surveillance team will make sure there are no illegal sales on the beach or unauthorised personnel carrying out massages. The Fuengirola coastline is divided into five areas: Carvajal- El Bote; El Bote-Plaza de San Rafael; Plaza de San Rafael-Port; Port-Calle Churruca and from Calle Churruca to the border with Mijas. Ready for beach actionTHE 2013 Special Beach Servicesare now in full operation.

Surveillance personnel havenow joined the team, along withlifeguards and first aiders, and thecleaning and maintenance crews.All of these services will be co-ordinated by a Local Policeinspector.

Councillor for Beaches AnaMula said that the beach serviceshave worked well every summerand that this year the aim was toimprove them even more.

The service has been designedby local citizens to control andorganise any activities carried outon the beach and deal withsituations which pose a risk topeople or to provide them withinformation.

It will also control beach lawsintroduced this year which makethe appearance of local beachesmore homogenous.

Locals have been asked tocollaborate to make going to thebeach an enjoyable experience for

Local Councillor forParks and GardensDolores Buzon said thatwith the location beingso unique and attractive,the town hall hoped themarket would become ahuge attraction forresidents and visitors onthe Costa del Sol.

The aim of the marketis to promote the work ofartisans and designers inMalaga Province andencourage self-employment.

It will have 40-50stalls with itemsincluding creativecookery and gourmetproducts.

MagicalworkshopLOCAL children havebeen learning magic.

Thanks to an agreementwith the Costa del SolMagic and IllusionismAssociation, they havebeen able to take part in aworkshop to develop theirimagination and skills.

Councillor for CultureRodrigo Romero said thiswas just one of theactivities which would becarried out thanks to theagreement, which includesmagic shows in parks anda magic festival, and thathe was sure it would be ahuge success.

THE second edition of the open-air Summer Cinema is running onLos Boliches beach in July andAugust.

Last year, more than 11,000people attended.

Mayor Esperanza Oña and themanager of the Parque Miramarshopping centre, Juan CarlosGomez, presented the programmeof films which will be shown thisyear, accompanied by localCouncillor for Beaches Ana Mula.

The chosen films areDespicable Me (July 23), TheSmurfs (July 30), Shrek 4 (August6) and Cars 2 (August 13), all withEnglish subtitles.

The films start at 10.30pm, onthe beach near the Roman

monument in Los Boliches.People can take their own towelsand chairs or sit on the sand.

The mayor said that she hadpromised free films on the beach

for locals and visitors in herelectoral campaign, and thankedthe Miramar shopping centre forits collaboration to make thesummer more attractive.

This newsletter has been co-producedbetween Fuengirola Town Hall’s ForeignResidents’ Council and the Euro WeeklyNews. Although at first sight the newslettermay seem like a simple and easyaccomplishment, getting this first issue

out has meant hours of work for both sides. Iwholeheartedly thank Euro Weekly News fortheir patience while waiting for us to solve alllegal matters regarding the mailing of thisnewsletter.

FUENGIROLA Town Hall has expressedits support for the family of a deceasedChinese shop-owner.

The local councillor for Citizen Safety,Rodrigo Romero, accompanied by severalmembers of the council, attended an eventheld in the town to protest about a robberyin a Chinese bazaar in early July.

The Chinese man was seriously injuredwhen he chased some youths who hadallegedly stolen a bottle of alcohol fromhis shop.

When they attempted to drive away, hegrabbed the back door of the car and wasdragged along the ground for severalmetres.

Meanwhile, the youths hit him with thebottle until he had to let go, police reported.

He was airlifted to a hospital in Malaga,but later died. Four youths aged between 18and 19 were arrested and one was sent toprison without bail. The others werereleased with charges.

Romero said how sad he was about theevent and told the man’s family that theyhad the full support of the local council.

He praised the rapid response of thepolice and said he hoped that the justicesystem would make the culprits pay fortheir actions to prove to the Chinesecommunity that crime in Spain does not gounpunished.

He went on to point out that there are noproblems in Fuengirola between locals and

the Chinese community.

Council supports bereaved family

Town hallsets upthe fairFUENGIROLA TownHall brought in alternativefairground attractions forLos Boliches fair aftertraders failed to abide bylocal regulations.

The town hall has hadan agreement with theAssociation of FairgroundTraders since 2011, bywhich the traders are incharge of setting up andrunning fairground ridesand stalls.

However, the town hallreports that the associationattempted to force them tochange the conditions ofthe contract. The town hallrefused to do so, as it putvisitors’ safety at risk.

Faced with this, theassociation said theywould set up the fair;however, they failed tohand in documents tocertify all installationswere in good workingorder.

Therefore, the townhall sought newattractions which wereavailable at reducedprices of €1 and €2 soeveryone could benefit.

THE sixth Grand Beer Festivalwill be held at the Sohail Castle inFuengirola from August 3 to 17.

Souviron and the managers of thecompanies organising the event,Bierfeste 2011 SL and Abel ImportSL, Wolfgang Kramer and Dirk

Abel, respectively, presented thefestival, which will offer the bestGerman beer and typical dishes.

Tents will be installed wherevisitors can listen to a liveorchestra. Open from 7pm to 2amduring the week, and from middayto 2am at the weekend.

Souviron said the festival isvisited by some 100,000 peopleevery year. While Abel andKramer said it was a pleasure forthem to organise the event inFuengirola.

English and Irish ask the most questionsREQUESTS for information at the Foreign Residents’ Department inFuengirola increased by 43 per cent in May this year compared to thesame month last year.

Councillor for Foreign Residents Katja Westerdahl reported that therehad been 1,058 requests for information in May, most of which camefrom English and Irish residents, followed by Finns and Swedes.

MORE than 20,000 people haveaccessed the internet for free thanks toFuengirola’s municipal Wi-Fi network,which was launched in the town inFebruary 2011.

The network was created so that localsand visitors could connect to the internetfor free while enjoying open-air publicareas in the town.

The local councillor for NewTechnologies, Juan Lazo, said theaim had been to bring technologycloser to residents, and reported that sofar this year, the number of frequentusers had increased by 50 per centto 6,358.

People who have registered with theservice but do not make use of it are

automatically taken off the list of users.However, counting the number ofpeople who have used it at least oncesince its launch, the figure amounts to20,063.

The service is currently availablein Parque del Sol, Plaza de España,Parque de España, Plaza del AntiguoAyuntamiento, Plaza de San Rafael,

the square in CalleMoreno Carbonero,Parque de los Naranjos,Plaza Anabe Conde,the tourist office andthe three local libraries,where there is freeinternet access.

Users must firstconnect to theRed_publica_Ayto_Fuengirola network usingtheir name and ID andaccept the responsi-bility clause in Spanishor English.

They can then use theinternet 24 hours a dayin the above-mentionedareas on their laptops,phones or tablets.

Anyone who doesnot register will onlybe able to visit thewww.fuengirola.orgpage and www.visitafuengirola.com

The speed is limitedso there is no issue ofcompetition withcompanies who offerinternet services.

All the Wi-Fi spotsare registered with theNational Commissionof the Telecom-munications Market.

Number of Wi-Fi usersgrows by 50 per cent

FUENGIROLA has approvedchanges to local laws regardinghanding out leaflets or havinginformation tables on thepavements.

The changes were proposed bythe Partido Popular to modify theMunicipal Law for Cleaning andOccupying the Public Way.

They refer specifically todistributing or posting leaflets andsimilar items and are aimed atpolitical parties, charities andbusinesses. Councillor IgnacioSouviron said the measure doesnot in any way violate freedom ofspeech and that it will help to keepthe town clean and tidy.

Anyone wanting to have a table

on the pavement to provideinformation must first getauthorisation from the town halland specify when and where theywill be located. Charities andanyone with non-commercialpurposes will be automatically

granted the licence unless whatthey plan is against the law.

Anyone who wishes to hand outleaflets with opinions orinformation is permitted to do sowithout prior authorisation.However, if this is to be done inspecific areas, the town hall mustbe informed at least one day beforeof the place and time, so thatcleaning services can be provided.

Finally, if the tables are wantedfor commercial purposes, they willbe granted following criteriaestablished for such cases and aslong as it does not annoy orinconvenience anyone, damageprivate property or go againstgeneral interests.

Registerfor rightto voteTHE Foreign Residents’Department wishes toremind EU citizens of theneed to be on the municipalcensus in order to vote in thenext European elections.

Councillor for ForeignResidents Katja Westerdahlannounced that EU citizenswho are registered on thelocal ‘padron’ and who wishto vote in the next Europeanand municipal electionsshould get their namesincluded on the census byfilling in a form which can beprovided by her department.

In the months running upto the EU Parliamentaryelections (in May 2014) theElectoral Census Office willnotify EU residents in Spainso they can vote here, if theyhave not been contacted inprevious years and have notinformed the town hall.

Once they have the formaldeclaration form, they onlyneed to sign it and post it tothe Provincial Delegation ofthe Electoral Census Office.If they wish, they can alsodo so online athttps://sede.ine.gob.es.

People who express theirwish to vote in Spain in thenext elections will be unableto do so from their owncountry, although they arestill able to take part ingeneral elections in theircountry of residence.

To register on the electoralcensus, visit the ForeignResidents’ Department, sendthe form and documents bypost to the StatisticsDepartment, or go online tohttps://sede.fuengirola.es/PortalCiudadano.

FUENGIROLA’S River Parknow has new facilities andactivities to make it moreattractive.

The Internal RegimeCouncillor for Fuengirola,Isabel Gonzalez, announcedthat the park now has twokiosks with food, a zip-line,paddle boats, bouncy castlesand bikes for hire. She invitedlocals and visitors of all ages to

visit the park which she said isunique in the province and thewhole of the Andalucian coast.

The aim, she said, had beento offer better services tocitizens, while promotingbusiness and creating jobs.

Since it opened, the park hasbecome popular with localsand visitors alike, and will nowhave two kiosks with snacks,which will be open all week.

Meanwhile, the zip-line,which is 18 metres high,travels across the river fromone side to the other, covering140 metres. It will be openevery day from 11am to 2pmand from 5pm to 10pm, at €4per person.

The park also has exerciseequipment, ping-pong tables,basket-balls courts, cycle lanesand an area for dogs.

HIGH-FLYING FUN: Attractions include an 18-metre high zip-line across the river.

Erika Leiva, Contratiempoand Los Fimerod were amongstthe acts which performed thisyear, in an event which alsoincluded traditional activitieslike the procession of the Virgendel Carmen, Patron Saint ofFishermen.

A different activity was addedthis year, which was the ‘Tapas

Cycling Route’, in whichseveral local bars and

restaurants took part. There wasalso a children’s party.

Spectacular summershows at the castle

These are not the only performanceswhich will be seen at the castle, as thefull list is yet to be completed.

The first was on July 6, with the singerfrom Huelva known as Argentina.

The next performance, on July 19, wasVanesa Martin, which, like all the others,started at 10.30pm and was muchenjoyed by the audience.

On July 21, the finalists from the lastedition of Spanish folklore songcompetition Se llama Copla perfomed tothe delight of many.

On July 29, it will be the turn ofcompany Concerlirica, who will beperforming the opera Carmen.

On August 31, singer Miguel Povedawill be the one to light up the night withhis singing talent.

The Councillor for Culture, RodrigoRomero, announced that the ‘Noches delCastillo’ (Castle Nights) event, will bemanaged by local company,Espectaculos Mundo, and that tickets tothe concert can be purchased from www.malagaentradas.com

Miguel Poveda, Vanesa Martin, Argentina, Se llama Copla and the opera Carmen are amongst theperformances which have been on the programme this summer at the Sohail Castle Festival.

Police crack down on the saleof bootleg goods locally

IN the first five monthsof this year, FuengirolaLocal Police seizedalmost 9,000 articleswhich breachedintellectual andindustrial property laws.

The local councillorfor Citizen Safety,Rodrigo Romero, saidthat this was aconsiderable risecompared to the sameperiod last year. Forexample, in all of 2012,9,770 items were seized.

This, he said, was aresult of the intensework which has beencarried out by the LocalPolice, who can only

control the market with local laws,while intellectual and industrialproperty laws come under thejurisdiction of the NationalPolice.

Romero met with the

Government Sub-Delegate andrepresentatives of the Costa delSol Community of Municipalitieslast year to discuss the matter,which is a problem along thecoast. Almost 86 per cent of the

bootleg items seized are DVDsand CDs, followed by sunglasses,handbags, watches, underwear,headphones and other items suchas shoes, wallets, caps, belts andt-shirts.

I.V.T.M. (Impuesto de Circulación de Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica). The I.V.T.M. is the road tax charged to each motor vehicle(car, motorcycle, moped, caravan, etc).

I.B.I. (Impuesto de Bienes Inmuebles). I.B.I. is a residential local property tax charged to each dwelling (villa, garage, storageroom, apartment, commercial premises, etc).

I.A.E. (Impuesto sobre Actividades Económicas). Tax on Economic Activities (for businesses, premises and/or professionals).Entrada de Vehículos. (Entrance of Vehicles) applies to the payment to be made when having a garage or parking space (also withinthe community and even if you do not own a motor vehicle) and the access to it is through the public sidewalk.

GEMER (Gestión Medioambiental Residuos). Environmental Management of Waste. To be paid by owners of properties(commercial premises, villas, flats, apartments...). Replaces the former garbage fee (RESOL).

O.V.P. Mesas y Sillas. Use of the Public Road with Tables & Chairs. If you have premises and you are using the public road withtables and chairs, you will have to pay the O.V.P. fee.
