Listed below are the major new features in FTOS 7.8.1.0:

C-Series Features Introduced in FTOS 7.8.1.0Secure DHCP - DHCP Snooping: DHCP snooping is a component of the FTOS secure DHCP suite of enterprise security features for establishing the legitimacy of DHCP servers and clients, and preventing DoS attacks and IP spoofing. DHCP snooping builds and maintains a DHCP binding table and then validates all DHCP packets against this table.

Private VLAN: Private VLANs (PVLANs) extend the FTOS security suite by virtualizing a shared VLAN into subdomains identified by a primary and secondary VLAN pair. Each primary VLAN supports multiple secondary community or isolated VLANs. Devices on community VLANs can communicate with each other via member ports, while devices on isolated VLANs cannot. The FTOS private VLAN implementation is based on RFC 3069. See Chapter 25, Private VLAN Commands, on page 463.

Secure DHCP — DHCP Relay Agent with Option 82: The DHCP relay agent with option 82 is a component of the FTOS secure DHCP suite of enterprise security features for establishing the legitimacy of DHCP servers and clients, and preventing DoS attacks and IP spoofing. RFC 3046 specifies option 82, which enables the DHCP relay agent (FTOS device) to include information about itself and the client when forwarding DHCP requests from a DHCP client to a DHCP server. The DHCP server uses the relay agent information to identify a client and assign an IP address based on the interface, rather than the client's MAC address.

Secure DHCP — IP Source Guard: IP source guard (source address validation) is a component of the FTOS secure DHCP suite of enterprise security features for establishing the legitimacy of DHCP servers and clients, and preventing DoS attacks and IP spoofing. IP source guard prevents IP spoofing by snooping DHCP traffic and then only permitting the IP addresses that were allocated with DHCP on the port to access the network.

Longer Names for ACLs and Routing Policies: FTOS now allows names of ACLs, policy maps, and route maps to be up to 140 characters long. FTOS versions prior to 7.8.1.0 supported a maximum length of 16 characters.

New Features

6 New Features

OSPF Fast Convergence: The FTOS OSPF implementation is optimized further to improve convergence time, and also features new commands that can be used to control LSA origination and processing.

Multi-process OSPF: Multi-process OSPF provides an option for creating multiple OSPF processes on a single router with separate databases. This feature can be used to virtualize a physical topology into logical routing domains, which can each support different routing and security policies. FTOS supports 28 processes on the E-Series, six processes on the C-Series, and three processes on the S-Series.

QoS Policy Scalability Optimizations: The QoS policy manager is optimized to use hardware tables more efficiently. A single copy of each policy is now written into CAM, which is used by all physical ports sharing the same policy.

IPv6 Routing: The FTOS IPv6 routing feature set is extended to the C-Series switch/routers with IPv6 static routing, QoS policies, ACLs, and management features.

Programmable (S,G) Expiry Timer: By default, all PIM-SM (S,G) entries expire in 210 seconds. For some multicast applications it is desirable that certain (S,G) pairs be retained for an extended period of time, even in the absence of an active source. The command ip pim sparse-mode sg-expiry-timer is added to configure the expiry time globally for all sources, or for a specific set of (S,G) pairs defined by an access list. This feature was also introduced in FTOS 7.7.1.1.

SNMP Set Configuration Copy of Startup to Running: The enterprise-specific FORCE10-COPY-CONFIG-MIB supports SNMP set requests. FTOS 7.8.1.0 extends this MIB with support for copying the startup-configuration file to the “running-config”.

ignore-case"Option for the grep CLI Command: The grep CLI command to search for a pattern in CLI output is extended with the ignore-case option to ignore case distinctions. See Filtering show Commands on page 67.

Multiple Tagging Support on VLAN Stacking Trunk Ports: The FTOS VLAN stacking implementation on the C-Series and S-Series now supports forwarding of VLAN stack and 802.1Q VLAN frames on the same port, allowing users greater flexibility when deploying VLAN stacking. See Chapter 24, VLAN Stacking, on page 455.

Port-Based Rate Policing on Layer 3 Interfaces: The FTOS QoS features set on the C-Series and S-Series is extended to support port-based rate policing on Layer 3 interfaces. Previous versions of FTOS supported this feature on Layer 2 interfaces. See QOS-POLICY-OUTrate-police on page 995.

FTSA/Call Home Proactive Monitoring Tests: The Force10 Service Agent (FTSA), part of the FTOS serviceability feature set, manages the automated "call home" monitoring and reporting system. FTOS 7.8.1.0 introduces a suite of proactive tests that can be customized to monitor and report abnormal software, hardware and network conditions. FTOS release 7.8.1.0 introduces new options to the policy-test-list and policy-action-list commands for refining your Call Home policies. See Chapter 43, Force10 Service Agent, on page 1053

User-configurable Buffer Settings for Control Queues: Buffer tuning commands are used to change the default way a switch/router allocates packet buffers from its available memory, which help to prevent packet drops during a temporary burst of traffic. This feature is enhanced to support configuring custom buffering for control plane queues. This feature was also introduced in FTOS 7.7.1.1. See Buffer Tuning on page 1084.


Enhanced Fan Tray: The enhanced fan tray for the C-Series switch/router provides more efficient cooling and automatically adjusts the fan speed based on the system temperature, which also reduces fan noise. Catalog numbers CC-C150-FAN2 for the C150 chassis and CC-C300-FAN2 for the C300 chassis are now supported in FTOS 7.8.1.0.

sFlow SNMP Set Configuration: The FTOS implementation of the sFlow MIB is enhanced to support sFlow configuration via SNMP sets.

PIM-SM Support on Port-channel Interfaces: FTOS 7.7.1.0 introduced PIM-SM on the C-Series for physical and VLAN interfaces. FTOS 7.8.1.0 adds support for PIM-SM for port-channel interfaces.

PIM-SSM Custom Filtering Ranges: The IP multicast feature set is extended to support the ip pim ssm-range command, which enables you to change the SSM range using an ACL. This feature was also introduced in FTOS 7.7.1.1.

OSPFv3: OSPFv3, as defined in RFC 2740, is now supported on the C-Series switch/router as part of the IPv6 routing feature set.

IP Multicast Policies: The FTOS IP multicast policy feature set is extended to the C-Series and S-Series. These platforms now support policies to limit the number of groups, neighbors, and multicast routes.

MAC Learning Limit Violation Logging and Shutdown Options: The FTOS MAC Learning Limit feature introduced in version 7.7.1.0 on the C-Series is enhanced with support for logging and/or shutting down the interface when a violation is detected. This feature was also introduced in FTOS 7.7.1.1. See the following commands added for the C-Series:

• mac learning-limit station-move-violation {log | shutdown-both | shutdown-offending | shutdown-original} See mac learning-limit station-move-violation on page 427.

- Ethernet Flow Control: IEEE 802.3x pause frames are a control frame type that can be used to throttle input on an interface if a device is overwhelmed by traffic. The interface CLI command flowcontrol to enable pause frames is now supported on the C-Series and S-Series switch/routers. Pause frames were ignored in previous versions of FTOS on these platforms. This feature was also introduced in FTOS 7.7.1.1.

Save to File Option for CLI Show Commands: The FTOS "show" commands are extended with a save option to save output to a file on flash for later use. See Filtering show Commands on page 67.

Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) on Qualified Force10 SFP and SFP+ Optical Media Modules: The FTOS serviceability feature set is enhanced to support Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) on qualified Force10 SFP and SFP+ optical media modules. DOM enables users to view real-time media module parameters for monitoring and troubleshooting. The show interfaces transceiver output is augmented with diagnostic fields for all platforms. See show interfaces transceiver on page 362.

Show LLDP System Name in CLI Commands: FTOS will now show system names in LLDP CLI show commands. Previous versions of FTOS displayed the chassis ID (for example,

00:01:e8:0d:b6:d6) in place of the system name. This feature was also introduced in FTOS 7.7.1.1.

BGP for IPv6: The FTOS IPv6 feature set is extended to the C-Series with support for BGP multiprotocol extensions for IPv6 routing, as defined in RFC 2545.

OSPFv3 Optimizations: The FTOS OSPFv3 implementation is optimized for higher scalability and lower convergence.

VU#472363/CVE-2008-2476 IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Corruption of Routing Table: The FTOS IPv6 implementation is modified to drop invalid ND packets, which prevents forwarding table corruption as described in this vulnerability report. This change was also introduced in FTOS 7.7.1.1.

VU#800113/CVE-2008-1447 Multiple DNS Implementations Vulnerable to Cache Poisoning: The DNS client functionality in FTOS is enhanced so that DNS lookups now use random source UDP ports and random transaction IDs, to prevent spoofed DNS responses from being accepted. The DNS client is only enabled if the ip domain-lookup command is present in the configuration. This change was also introduced in FTOS 7.7.1.1.

User-configurable CAM Allocations: Content Addressable Memory (CAM) stores lookup information in hardware to provide line-rate packet lookups and forwarding. Specifically, it consists of several subregions where entries for Layer 2, IPv4/IPv6, QoS, and ACLs are stored. This feature enables you to optimize CAM usage by allocating CAM space based on specific network requirements.

IGMPv2 to PIM-SSM Mapping for Transition to IGMPv3: The FTOS multicast feature set on the C-Series switch/router is extended to support IGMPv2 to PIM-SSM mappings, as a solution for transitioning to IGMPv3 and PIM-SSM while maintaining compatibility for IGMPv2. It is required if the receivers only support IGMPv2.

User-configurable Buffer Profile Templates: Buffer configuration commands are used to change the way a switch/router allocates packet buffers from its available memory, which helps to prevent packet drops during a temporary burst of traffic. The buffer configuration feature is enhanced with several profile templates that make changing the buffer allocation simpler. See buffer-profile (Configuration) on page 1135.

New Features in FTOS 7.7.1.0

High Availability

C-Series• Downloadable FPGA images: The E-Series and C-Series use Field Programmable

Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for control plane and system operations. FPGA images can now be upgraded separately from the FTOS image, allowing greater flexibility in software version management. In previous versions of the software, FPGA images were included in the main FTOS software image and could only be upgraded as part of an FTOS upgrade.

• Hardware Watchdog Timer: A hardware watchdog mechanism has been introduced to automatically reboot an FTOS switch/router with a single RPM that is unresponsive. This is a last resort mechanism intended to prevent a manual power cycle.

Layer 2

C-Series• MAC Learning Limit a.k.a Port Security: The FTOS MAC Learning Limit feature for

implementing port security is available on the C-Series. A limit on the number of addresses associated with a particular interface is configured with an optional violation action when the MAC address learning limit is reached on that interface. See MAC Addressing on page 421.

• Redundant Pairs: The redundant pairs feature provides an alternative to running STP on Ethernet networks, and supports link redundancy while preventing loops. A pair of interfaces are configured as a primary and a backup interface. Use the switchport backup command. See switchport on page 369 in Chapter 18, Interface Commands, on page 321.

Layer 3

C-Series• 31-Bit Prefix Support on Point-to-Point Ethernet Interfaces: A 31-bit IP prefix length,

described in RFC 3021, allows the use of only two IP addresses on a point-to-point Ethernet interface, conserving IP address space. Previously, four IP addresses (a /30) or unnumbered interfaces for point-to-point links were required.

• BFD on Physical, VLAN and LAG Interfaces for OSPF, VRRP, and Static Routes: The FTOS Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD feature is now available on the C-Series.

10 New Features

BFD can be used to rapidly detect communication failures between two adjacent systems. Scalability and performance differences exist due to differences in the hardware architecture of each platform. See Chapter 38, Bidirectional Forwarding Detection, on page 967.

• BGP: The FTOS BGP feature set is now available on the C-Series. Scalability and performance differences exist due to differences in the hardware architecture of each platform.See Chapter 35, Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), on page 715.• BGP 4-Byte AS Numbers: The BGP 4-byte AS number feature, as described in

RFC 4893, extends AS numbers from 2 to 4 bytes. With this extension, the range of AS numbers greatly expands from 1 to 65535 for 2-byte numbers to 1.0 to 65535.65535 for 4-byte numbers. For interoperability and compatibility, 4-byte AS number support is advertised through a new BGP capability (4-BYTE-AS) in the OPEN message.

• BGP “neighbor allowas-in” CLI Command to Allow Prefixes with Own ASN in AS PATH: The BGP feature set now supports a command to accept prefixes with a router's own AS number in the AS path. The default behavior is to discard such prefixes since this usually indicates a loop, however there are cases when this behavior needs to be overridden for legitimate reasons.

• BGP “neighbor {ip-addr} local-as” CLI for AS Number Transitions: The BGP feature set now supports a command to configure a second AS number for a particular peer, allowing the router to appear to be a member of the second AS, in addition to its real AS. It is useful in cases where the peer cannot change its AS number.

• IP Multicast Enhancements:• IGMP v1 and v2: Multicast routers use Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)

to learn which groups have members on each of their attached physical networks. IGMPv1/v2 is now supported on the C-Series. See IGMP Commands on page 1019.

• PIM-SM: The FTOS implementation of Protocol-Independent Multicast-Sparse Mode (PIM-SM) is now available on the C-Series. PIM-SM is a multicast protocol in which multicast receivers explicitly join to receive multicast traffic. The protocol uses a router as the root or Rendezvous Point (RP) of the share tree distribution tree to distribute multicast traffic to a multicast group. See PIM Sparse-Mode on page 1037.

Management

C-Series• AAA Authentication Key Length Extended to 42 Characters: FTOS now allows keys

used for RADIUS and TACACS+ authentication to be up to 42 characters long. FTOS versions prior to 7.7.1 supported a maximum length of 25 characters.

• Configuration Replace and Rollback Enhancements: The FTOS configuration replace and rollback feature has been extended with several commands to manage the configuration archive, and support to synchronize the archive to standby RPMs.

• FTSA/Call Home with Notification of Critical System Events: The Force10 Service Agent (FTSA) manages the automated "call home" monitoring and reporting system. Enhancements have been made to support more advanced serviceability and manageability functions. FTSA now monitors software and hardware events, and can automatically collect and send diagnostic information in the event of a failure. See Chapter 43, Force10 Service Agent, on page 1053.


• SNMP OID for Interface Output Throttles: The F10-if-extension MIB has been extended with the f10IfOutThrottles OID to count the number of throttle control frames (EtherType 0x8808) that have been sent on a port.

• SNMP Set Support: The FTOS SNMP feature component that supports SNMP sets is now available on the C-Series. SNMP set commands can be used to set the dot1qVlanStaticTable (Extended Bridge MIB), the ifAdminStatus object (Interfaces MIB), and the f10CopyTable (F10-COPY-CONFIG-MIB). See Chapter 12, SNMP and Syslog, on page 195 and SNMP Traps on page 1155.

• Strong Encryption (MD5) for Local Passwords: Strong encryption of username passwords using the MD5 hash algorithm is now supported, in addition to the DES algorithm.

• Username Field Extension to 63 Characters: The username command used to configure local authentication is extended to support names of up to 63 characters. See username on page 277.

System

C-Series• C-Series DC PEM: FTOS now supports the C-Series DC Power Entry Module

(CC-C-PWR-DC). Two PEMs can be used on the C150 and C300 to provide 1+1 system power redundancy.

• Egress Rate Shaping: Enable per-queue rate shaping on egress. Egress rate shaping is now available on the C-Series as part of the FTOS QoS feature set. Rate shaping can be applied a port, or to one of the four hardware queues on a port, to constrain the egress traffic to a given rate.

• FlexMedia Line Card: FTOS now supports the C-Series FlexMedia line card, which features 36 10/100/1000Base-T, eight SFP and two 10 GbE SFP+ ports. Two versions are available, a standard line card (LC-CB-10G-1G-36T) and a PoE version that supports up to 15.4 watts of power per port (LC-CB-10G-1G-36V). A qualified SFP+ 10 GbE SR media module (GP-10GSFP-1S) is supported on each SFP+ port. See Chapter 44, Power Over Ethernet (PoE), on page 1091.

• LLDP VLAN Name TLV for Interoperation with Avaya Phones: The FTOS Power over Ethernet (PoE) feature set has been enhanced with additional LLDP-MED features required to deploy VoIP phone systems. The VLAN Name TLV enables FTOS to interoperate with Avaya IP phones which must receive "voice" in the VLAN name. See Chapter 20, LLDP, on page 397.

• Multiple Port Monitoring Sessions and Multiple Monitored Interfaces to a Single Monitoring Interface: The C-Series Port Monitoring feature is extended with support for up to five monitored source interfaces to one monitoring destination interface and support for up to five monitoring groups at one time. See Chapter 13, Port Monitoring, on page 227.

• PoE Enhancements to Support Priority and Power Requirements from LLDP-MED Enabled Phones: The FTOS Power over Ethernet implementation is enhanced with LLDP-MED features required to deploy VoIP phone systems. FTOS now supports the Extended Power-via-MDI TLV needed to enable dynamic power allocation and priority based on the device requirements. See Chapter 20, LLDP, on page 397 and Chapter 44, Power Over Ethernet (PoE), on page 1091.
