FRANKSTON TENNIS CLUB RELOCATION :

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE !!

Relocation of the Frankston Tennis

Club Steering Committee Report Since my last report we have had one meeting with the FCC and major stakeholders. This meeting seemed to go well with confirmation of the lodgement of an application for a $3M roofed stadium for Gymnastics – through to the State Government. Also, at that meeting, even though at the previous meeting the Golf club appear to be more supportive of the Project, have now pulled out and will take no part in it. We were assured that the project will still go ahead and the Golf Course and Gymnastics are in full favour of it.

The representatives of Golf Victoria were not impressed with the Golf club’s decision and have urged the FCC to have one last go at getting them on board. I noted that Cr Colin Hampton was not present at the meeting, which I think is the first and only meeting he’s missed. Lets see if he attends future meetings. FCC presented some concept drawings for the Project but did make it clear that they were only produced for the application for funding and were not final drawings and may look nothing like what the development will be. It is unlikely that there will be further meetings this year. HOWEVER, since that meeting, at the usual monthly FCC monthly Open Council meetings, held on Monday 19 December 2016, we witnessed the nine (9) recently elected Frankston City Councillors, including the new

Mayor, unanimously agreeing to the

withdrawal of the Centenary Golf Club AND

the Golf Course Operations from the

Centenary Park Sporting Complex project,

effective immediately. The result of this totally unexpected decision is that, apart from effectively wasting the last two years of meetings, research, presentations, & the hundreds of man hours put in by all our Sub-Committee members – the HUNT FOR OUR NEW HOME – CONTINUES. We will continue to work closely with the FCC to explore all possible avenues and a meeting has just been set by FCC for Monday 9 January 2017. We do not know if we will still be co-located at the Centenary Park site with Gymnastics ; or that FCC would now consider a “stand-alone” project for us.

For you background information - it had been previously announced at a previous meeting that even though the Golf Club appeared to be much more supportive of the project, they had pulled out of the project and will take no part in it. We were assured that the project will still go ahead and the golf course and gymnastics are in full favour of it.

The representatives of Golf Victoria were not impressed with the golf clubs decision and have urged the FCC to have one last go at getting them on board. FCC presented some concept drawings for the project but did make it clear that they were only produced for the application for finance and were not final drawings and may look nothing like what the development will be. The FCC were preparing a report for the new Councillors to fully brief them on the project. We were confident that apart from the golf club all stakeholders are working together to achieve something special and by the middle of 2017 drawings and funding were to be in place to commence the development. We will keep you all informed of any developments ; and we expect to be able to report more following our meeting on 9 January 2017. WATCH THIS SPACE !!! John McGillivray

2017 “COVER UP SUNSCREEN”

FRANKSTON SUMMER CLASSIC

2-4 January 2017

COVER-UP SUNSCREEN

Our next JUNIOR TOURNAMENT – the 2017 COVER UP SUNSCREEN FRANKSTON SUSMMER CLASSIC will be Monday 2nd to Wednesday 4 January 2017. Tennis Australia have reduced this event from the usual 5 days to only 3 and the match format, originally going to be “FAST4”was thankfully been changed to “Best of 2 Sets with a 10 point Match Tiebreak” to determine the Winner. We were able to change the format from the originally published “FAST4” format of Best of 2 4-game sets. It must have worked, as we have more players than last year’s event.

The FRANKSTON TENNIS CLUB has adopted an AUSTRALIAN OPEN PLAYER !! everyone, The FRANKSTON TENNIS CLUB have a Main Draw player in the 2017 AUSTRALIAN OPEN (Womens). This is a TENNIS AUSTRALIA program designed to "connect" the AO players with local community tennis clubs nationally. We are very very lucky just to get a player, and we seem to have been given quite a handy young player. She is a Croation girl DONNA VEKIC and she is currently ranked 101 Singles in the world - not long out of Junior ranks and she is playing the world's best players. As part of the program. .....the FRANKSTON TENNIS CLUB sort of adopts DONNA and promotes her while promoting us at the same time. Hi All, I am well into training for my participation in the 4.5 Kms WALK section in the MEMORY WALK / JOG EVENT to be held on Sunday 22 January 2017, in aid of the ALZHEIMER’S AUSTRALIA VICTORIA APPEAL. I have already reached 4.5 kms and walk close to this distance every day. I have even walked from Mornington to Mt Eliza in response to a challenge from a generous sponsor – a distance of 6.3 kms – for a great donation of $100 towards the Appeal.

PENINSULA MENS MASTERS

Much like the SENIORS Saturday afternoon competition, the MENS 55+ WEDNESDAY COMPETITION is going strong. A few new faces, a couple of returning faces and a few injuries so far this Season. Hopefully the Summer weather stays with us – not too hot and no more washouts – the Winter season was certainly a bad one for washouts !! The Masters Men recently held their Christmas Break-Up Celebration which was a culinary extravaganza with beautiful displays of Christmas delicacies and treats, Puddings, Shortbread and Christmas cakes. As always a great big THANK YOU goes to Terry Heazle and John Connell for their on-going organisational prowess in once again putting this terrific competition together for what is now heading into its 20th consecutive Season. Well done to all the Players involved for their continued support of the Mens Masters.

The Summer Season is now in full swing with the season passed the half-way mark. Many of our teams, both the Boys & the Girls have already had their share of injuries – one broken ankle, one fractured arm and foot surgery. We have been stretched to capacity to find emergencies, sometimes at last minute, but have managed to find enough players to cover the injuries and absences. The SUMMER 2016/2017 NIGHT SEASON continues on with strong competition and a few “returning” players from previous season coming back into the fray as Emergencies. And, so far this Season - no washouts.

MID-WEEK LADIES

The Mid-Week Ladies 2016 SEASON 2 has now concluded ; and thankfully, this season with no “wash out” grand final results. Firstly a big CONGRATULATIONS to our FRIDAY SINGLES SECTION 1 CHAMPIONS for taking out the Flag – RENEE CHEASLEY & RHONDA CRONIN. They were far too strong on the day – not dropping a set and only loosing a combined total of 8 games in the 2 straight-set Singles victories by Renee & Rhonda.

And our TUESDAY GIRLS SECTION 4 TEAM WON THEIR first SEMI-FINAL, against the higher ranked team from Frankston East. A huge effort from all the Girls – Carol Gardner, Bev Valentine, Debbie Grenfell and Maureen Withers. The Girls then went on to play the GRAND FINAL at Mt Eliza up against the lovely Ladies from Langwarrin - who finished on top of the Ladder. Our Girls were gallant in defeat with Langwarrin being just too strong on the day. Our TUESDAY SECTION 2 Girls easily won their Semi-Final to take them straight into the Grand Final – up against the girls from Frankston East. Unfortunately, on the day, it wasn’t meant to be – with our girls, Marg Clode, Joanne Smith, Sue Nissen & Rhonda Cronin, going down to the FE girls – Jenny Bouker, Lorraine Avers, Kerry Butler & Sue Cherry. CONGRATULATIONS to all our wonderful Girls for their efforts once again in what was not an easy season with injuries and overseas trips impacting on some of the teams. The team nominations for the 2017 Summer Season Summer season have been completed and lodged with the PTA for Grading.

Hope you all have a good and safe break over the Christmas / New Year period. See you all in 2017.
