DESCRIPTION: Letters (personal; business; legal), manuscripts (prose, poetry; diaries) and documents (deeds; reciepts; invoices; account books)of two important New England families whose British ancestors settled inMassachusetts during the second quarter of the seventeenth century (John Gay,a founder of Dedham, Mass"., 1635> and John Otis, a founder of HLngham, Mass#,I636). The eighteenth century materials focuses on the personal and businesscorrespondence of Calvin, Jotham and Martin Gay (sons of Rev, Ebenezer Gay,I696-I787) who were engaged in shipping between New England and the MaritimeProvinces• ihere are occasional letters of Jotham and Martin referring tothe American Revolution. The Otis family correspondence of this century, likewise, is of a purely routine and personal nature* For example, thereare only four letters of Col. James Otis (1702-1778) and only two of his son,James, the patriot, (1725-1783). Gay and Otis family interests intertwineduring the nineteenth century due to the marriage of Mary Allyne Otis toEbenezer Gay (1771-l81i2), who are among the chief corresppndents of thiscentury, along with their children including Sidney Howard Gay, the journalistand author, and Winckworth Allan Gay, the landscape painter. The Otiscorrespondence centers around the business, real estate and personal interestsof Mary A. Otis Gay's brothers: John, Joseph and William Otis.
