Synopsis Students educated children and their parents about diabetes, and the importance of exercise and a healthy diet. Kids played two interactive games, where they spun a wheel and were asked a question about diabetes, and they played a game where they had to match up a popular drink or candy (ie. Soda, Gatorade, tea, gummy worms, and water) with a bag containing an equivalent amount of sugar.
What would you do to improve this event?
Increase the number of patients we talk to by having something more than information to give to the kids. (kids were able to take a page with information, a word search, and crossword puzzle about diabetes)

Event #2 featuring health systems speakers: April 14, 2016 Julie Cash, Pharm.D., Critical Care Specialist at UF Health Shands Hospital and NCFSHP Treasurer (Involvement of ASHP state affiliate)
- Description: She told us about her residency training and how she found her passion in critical care. She also encouraged us to get involved in FSHP to gain valuable leadership experience and learn more about potential specialty areas to help us narrow down what our passion is. She also walked us through a real patient case to help us practice our clinical skills in the treatment of critical care patients.
Information Session on Residency Training: September 17, 2015: Residency Forum - Description: Our chapter collaborated with Kappa Epsilon to host this annual forum and
provided students the opportunity to interact with residency directors and residents. Students gained insight into various post-graduate training programs including residencies and fellowships from presentations and topic discussion sessions. In order to put on this event, we had to reach out to local FSHP members to encourage them and their residents to attend the event.
Service Events: - American Cancer Society Hope Lodge - 3/17/2016 & 4/5/2016: We made and served dinner to
cancer patients and their families staying in the lodge. - Light the Night Walk – 10/22/2015: Our team raised money for research and walked to raise

PPMI Education Event: February 19, 2016 - Stacy Carson, Pharm.D, Medication Safety Specialist at North Florida Regional Medical Center
- Description: She spoke about the importance of medication safety, the responsibilities of her job, and how every pharmacist needs to be involved in promoting medication safety for the benefit of the patient, supporting ASHP’s Practice Advancement Initiative to create a safe and effective patient care process and the intricate involvement of pharmacists in that process.
- Specifically, she enlightened us about the process of Root Cause Analysis to find flaws in the patient care process through sharing an example patient case with us.
Leadership Development Event: - January 21, 2016: Mentor Night - This formal roundtable dinner was designed to foster
professional networking, provide students insight into various areas of pharmacy practice from health-system pharmacists, and inspire students to become pharmacist leaders like these mentors. Mentors included Katherine Vogel Anderson, Pharm.D., BCACP; Randy Hatton, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS; Tara Higgins, Pharm.D.; Martina Holder, Pharm.D., BCPS; Larisa H. Cavallari, Pharm.D., BCPS; Shelley S. Spradley, Pharm.D., BCPS; & Michelle Stammet, Pharm.D..
- ASHP state affiliate involvement: Dr. Vogel Anderson and Dr. Tara Higgins are both active members within the local FSHP chapter.
Innovative Patient Care Project: - Medication Reconciliation Initiative: Our newest initiative for 2016, aligning with ASHP’s Practice
Advancement Initiative, is to start a Medication Reconciliation program with UF Health Shands Hospital, where students will have the opportunity to assist in medication reconciliation of patients in the hospital as first- or second-year students before they go on rotations, in order to practice and perfect their patient counseling skills. Currently, our three co-chairs have worked to sort out the legal indications of this program as well as attended the hospital’s medication reconciliation orientation for APPE students. The co-chairs will be a trial run to see if the program will be possible for students earlier in the pharmacy program. We hope to be able to offer this volunteer opportunity for all members by next year.
