~¥~¥~¥~¥~¥~¥~¥~¥~FRYSC: Celebrating 25 Years of Success~¥~¥~¥~¥~¥~¥~¥~¥~
Greetings and Salutations: 25 Years of Success Continues Ð KEEP
by Leslie S. Hall, President, FRYSCKy, Inc.
Elizabethtown (KY) ¥ As we move through this phenomenal 25th year of successful service to students and families
across the Commonwealth, I want to celebrate with you and Keep. Using the word Keep as a verb Merriam-Webster
describes it as to following:
a.! To maintain a course, direction, or progress
b.! To continue usually without interruption
c.! To persist in a practice
Take time this year to look at the path we forged, a path that is now being recognized nationally; celebrate
accomplishments and then look towards the future. We canÕt stop now. We need to KeepÉ.
¥! Keep up the good work and momentum.
¥! Keep looking for new inventive ways to assist and educate children and families.
¥! Keep community relationships strong.
¥! Keep contacting our legislators.
¥! Keep lifting each other up.
¥! Keep moving forward.
When I first took the Coordinator position in West Point, KY in 1995, I heard the rumors immediately and for many years
as different people would tell me, ÒDonÕt get comfortable, you wonÕt have a job next year.Ó ÒThere is no way they will
continue to fund FRYSCÕs.Ó ÒItÕs a grant program that wonÕt continue.Ó Or my favorite would be, ÒItÕs a fluff program
with no educational significance, it canÕt sustain funding.Ó I would panic at the end of every school year, wondering if I
would have a job the next year. Well, Well, Well, look where we are now! 25 years!!! We are still standing, still going
strong and we are integrated into the Kentucky educational system. We are known and valued by schools, school boards,
and legislators. We are an important part of education in our Commonwealth and we will Keep.
I hope to see you all for Fall Institute in Louisville. We have some wonderful celebratory plans in store, educational and
informative workshops and good motivational presentations to send you back out ready to Keep and start the next 25.
If you need to contact me, I can be reached at [email protected] or at 270-268-5485 and IÕm always glad to
hear from you.
Prayers for happiness, strength, blessings and favor! God be with you all!

FRYSC News from across Kentucky
Region 11 (Cloverport Independent) ~ Helping Students Achieve College and
Career Readiness through New Partnership
by Pat Fuqua, Coordinator, Cloverport Independent FRYSC
Cloverport (KY) ¥ When Angie Dubree, College and Career Readiness Counselor (CCRC) in Cloverport Independent
Schools, and Pat Fuqua, Family Resource Youth Service Center (FRYSC) director for Cloverport, presented during the
state FRYSC conference this past July 18 and 19, they had no idea their two sessions would be so well attended. Dubree
and Fuqua co-presented their partnership in Cloverport to reduce barriers to college and career readiness for students.
ÒMany questions were asked and ideas shared and we continue to get email inquiries from FRYSC directors statewideÓ
says Fuqua.
There is a growing interest in learning more about how FRYSCs can and should be involved in reducing barriers to
college and career readiness for students. Fuqua says ÒFRYSCs are required to address college and career readiness in
their work, but very few have any idea of where or how to begin. Our work in Cloverport has shown that this kind of
partnership can be very effective for students and families without a lot of extra funds or resources on the part of
FRYSCs.Ó
Dubree said ÒPat and I talked about how a unified front between CCRCs and FRYSCs shows students, faculty, and
administration that amazing things can happen. I had people stopping me and asking more questions about what CCRCs
do and the impacts we have made in our schools.Ó During their conference sessions, Dubree and Fuqua shared several
practical examples of their partnership, including parent information about college and career readiness, financial aid
information and practical tips for college-going students, ice cream socials, application assistance, and much more.
At Martha Lane Collins high school in Shelby County, CCRC Maggie Gorman and FRYSC director Leesa Stivers have
established a lasting partnership to assist students with being life-ready. Gorman says ÒFRYSCs have a unique viewpoint
of students. They often know things about students that CCRCs might not pick up on. The FRYSC is essential to
removing barriers that may inhibit a student from moving towards being ready for life after high school. And their wealth
of knowledge about the community and assistance programs makes them an invaluable resource and partner for CCRCs.Ó
But while most schools have access to FRYSC staff, not all have staff dedicated to college and career readiness. Dubree
and Gorman work in their respective districts as CCRCs under a federal Race to the Top District (RTT-D) grant
administered by the Green River Regional Education Cooperative in Partnership with the Ohio Valley Educational
Cooperative. ÒThe grantÕs aim is to help 22 rural Kentucky school districts personalize learning for students and to ensure
that they graduate life-readyÓ according to Dennis Horn, who oversees the work of 22 CCRCs. ÒOne of the most
successful aspects of the grant has been new partnerships between CCRC and FRYSC staff.Ó
Dubree and Fuqua are willing to share their success stories, ideas, and resources with those interested. They can be
reached at [email protected] and [email protected].

Region 8 (Estill County) ~ Students Participate in
Summer Reading Day Camp
by Sara Stringfield, Coordinator, West Irvine
Intermediate FRC
Irvine (KY) ¥ The Family Resource Center at West
Irvine Intermediate in Estill County hosted the
Summer Reading Day Camp on June 16. Students
were invited to attend and learn fun, educational
games they can use in their home, during summer
break, to continue to build their reading and literacy
skills. Students rotated through centers that taught
them about context clues, vocabulary,
comprehension, decoding and main ideas. Students
also had fun making their own summer reading totes
and enjoying a physical activity break!
Region 1 (Hopkins County) ¥ Super Star Chef Summer Camp
by Debrina Duvall, Coordinator, Pride Elementary FRC
Madisonville (KY) ¥ Pride Elementary students
participated in Super Star Chef summer camp at the
Hopkins County Extension office. Students were taught
how to slice and dice, measure with accuracy, and much
more. Students made homemade bread, homemade butter,
strawberry jam, fruit salad, and homemade ice cream.
Students participated in group activities, food pyramid,
learned about vegetables in the garden! They got a bag
full of cooking utensils, recipes, and other great
information. They loved it!

Region 11 (Metcalfe County) ¥ School Readiness Bus Ð Helping Children
Transition to Kindergarten by Patty Bunch, Coordinator, Metcalfe County FRC
Edmonton (KY) ¥ The summer months are full of fun
and excitement and families welcome the break that it
brings from the demands of the school year. While it is
certainly important that children enjoy vacation,
swimming, little league and the county fair, school staff
and community early childhood professionals want
parents to know that being prepared for the up-coming
school year is important as well.
To help families prepare for the up-coming year and to
actively promote school readiness, the Adair County
Family Resource Centers and Adair County Early
Childhood Council sponsored a ÒSchool Readiness BusÓ
at the Adair County Fair in June.
The bus, a climate controlled, modified school bus was turned into an early childhood center complete with crayons and
building blocks. It was parked at the local fairgrounds each night of the fair and staffed by Kindergarten and Preschool
teachers, Family Resource Center staff and other local early childhood professionals. Parents with young children were
encouraged to board the bus to access information about the abundance of early childhood programs that are available in
the area with special emphasis on future school readiness.
Each young child that visited the bus received a gift bag with a new book and suggested activities to promote school
readiness skills. Parents had access to information about Preschool, Headstart, First Steps, Family Resource, Agape
House Pregnancy Resource Center, Adair Public Library and Adanta Early Childhood Mental Health programs.
Unfortunately, Kindergarten screenings show that only about 50% of Adair County students are prepared to enter school
Òready to engage in and benefit from early learning experiences that best promote the childÕs successÓ. Adair County
Schools are actively seeking ways to promote school readiness for all through targeted programs such as Preschool, a
Kindergarten Camp and a new Born Learning Academy sponsored by the Family Resource Center.
School staff and FRC coordinators are active partners with the Adair County Early Childhood Council to address early
childhood needs in the community and to coordinate out-reach efforts like the ÒSchool Readiness BusÓ.
KinderMusik Advertisement ~ If you are seeking a new program, which also helps with increased parent involvement,
then you may be interested in the KinderMusik curriculum. Several KY school districts and FRCs are now starting to use
the program. The KinderMusik curriculum, which places a HUGE emphasis on Family Involvement, is literacy rich,
engaging, easy implementation, and fun.
ÒKindermusik is a powerful catalyst for language and social skill development. ItÕs served to Òjump startÓ early literacy
and numeracy skill development. The lesson plans are irresistible and compelling. Children who were previously
unavailable for social interaction and learning readily engage and are soon leading their peers in the routines of the
program.Ó
