is one of the most important typeface art-ists of the 20th century. He was born in 1928 in Switzerland and learned typeset-ting. Following this apprenticeship he at-tended classes in typography and graphics of Alfred Willimann and Walter Käch at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich. Both teachers deepened Frutiger’s proficiency with type and encouraged his talent as a type designer. His outstanding graduation project, showing the development of the Latin alphabet, consisted of eight wood cut plates and marked the beginning of his international career as a type designer.

Adrian Frutiger gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Schriftkünstler des 20. Jahrhunderts. 1928 in der Schweiz geboren, lernte er das Handwerk des Schriftsetzers. Im Anschluss besuchte er die Weiter-bildungsklasse in Schrift und Grafik bei Alfred Willi-mann und Walter Käch an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich. Beide Lehrer vertieften Frutigers Kenntnisse über das Medium Schrift und förderten sein Talent als Schriftentwerfer. Mit seiner herausragenden Di-plomarbeit „Die Entwicklung des lateinischen Alpha-bets“, die aus acht Holzschnitttafeln bestand, begann Frutigers internationale Karriere als Schriftgestalter.

Adrian Frutiger est considéré comme un des typographes les plus renommés du 20ème siècle. Né en 1928 en Suisse, il a appris le métier de compositeur. A la suite il a suivi les cours de typographie et de graphisme dans la classe de perfectionnement de l’école des arts décoratifs de Zurich. Ses deux professeurs Alfred Willimann et Walter Käch ont permis à Frutiger d’approfondir ses connaissances dans le domaine de la typographie tout en encourageant son talent de concepteur. C’est avec son mémoire sur « Le développement de l’alphabet latin » formé de huit panneaux gravés en bois, qu’a commencé sa carrière typographique internationale.

Adrian Frutiger decided to continue his professional development in France. Charles Peignot, co-owner and general director of the foundry Deberny & Peignot, was fascinated by Frutiger’s graduation project and hired the young man. This visionary stroke of luck ended up produc-ing the first important typefaces, for example “Meridien” and the world famous “Univers”. In addition to the design of new typefaces, Frutiger also optimized classic typefaces like “Bodoni” or “Garamond” to meet the demands of the new process of the time, photosetting.

Adrian Frutiger entschloss sich, seine berufliche Laufbahn in Frankreich fortzusetzen. Charles Peignot, Mitinhaber und Generaldirektor der Schriftgießerei Deberny & Peignot, war von der Diplomarbeit begeis-tert und engagierte den jungen Mann. Durch diesen visionären Glücksgriff entstanden die ersten wich-tigen Schriften, z. B. die „Meridien“ und die welt-bekannte „Univers“. Neben dem Entwerfen neuer Schriften, optimierte Adrian Frutiger auch bewährte Drucktypen wie die „Bodoni“ oder die „Garamond“ für die Anforderungen des zu dieser Zeit aufkommen-den Fotosatzes.

Charles Peignot, co-propriétaire et directeur général de la fonderie Deberny & Peignot était si enthousiasmé par le mémoire qu’il a engagé le jeune homme. Cette décision n’a pas manqué de porter ses fruits sous forme des premiers principaux polices de caractères comme par ex. la « Méridien » ainsi que la « Univers » dont la renommée mondiale est incontestée. Outre la conception de nouvelles polices, Adrian Frutiger a également optimisé les polices éprouvées (la « Bodoni » ou la « Ga-ramond ») pour qu’elles répondent aux critères de la photocomposition qui venait de faire son apparition.



In 1960, he founded an studio near Paris. This period resulted in two important type-faces, the machine-readable “OCR-B” and the “Frutiger”, which was developed for the directional system of the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.

Adrian Frutiger originally began as a designer for hot-metal types. In 40 years, he followed the move to photosetting and then to digital type and his designs moved with the technology. Numerous prizes honor his work in both typography and the fine arts.
