Love StartS at Home

Two young couples share their journey in love

What’s it like for a couple to be both from the Home Team? Two young couples share with Frontline how they met, fell in love and what they do to keep their love going strong.

Partners at home and workLillian and Chee Wee were from the same Basic Officer’s Course in 2005. It was only after the course, when Lillian had a short attachment at Paya Lebar Fire Station where Chee Wee was based, that they got to know each other better. “It was also around that time that we broke up with our respective partners then,” said Lillian. “So our relationship developed from there, and we finally got married in 2008.”

Diana and Jude were in different squads at the Police Academy in 2001, and both were later posted to Clementi Division. “We

Daughter Alicia, 2 and another on the way

dated for around a month and then went our separate ways,” said Diana. “But we got back again two years later in 2003 and we got married in 2007. It’s been five happy years and we now have two kids!”

So how does it feel to be both from the Home Team?

“We’re both proud to be doing our part for the nation,” said Chee Wee. “Lillian handles community involvement at the 3rd CD Division, while I serve as Deputy Commander of Marina Bay Fire Station as an ORNSman.” Being both from the Home Team has also helped Diana and Jude. “It’s easier for us to understand each other when we come back late or need to do shift work,” said Jude. “So we are fortunate that we do not have any disagreement when it comes to our work.”

Love bitesOur couples reveal what they love

about their other half!

Lillian: Chee Wee puts up with all my complaints and he’s always there for

me, no matter what happens. He also helps me with all the housework and

taking care of our girl.

Chee Wee: Lillian is thoughtful in taking care of our family and she always has kind words for me.

She also gives me space to enjoy my favourite sports and pastimes.

Diana: Jude is a cool dude who always has everything under control.

He’s a doting father, the kids love him, and he always makes me smile.

He’s also quite handsome.

Jude: Diana is full of love for our family. They say there’s a woman

behind every successful man, and she’s been really supportive of me.

I also love her enchanting eyes.

Making love workHow do our couples keep the flame of love alive? It’s all in the little things.

“We still hold hands (now together with our daughter) when we go out,” said Chee Wee. “Small gestures like hugs and kisses and saying ‘I love you’ every day let us know we’re here for each other.” A surprise every now and then also helps. “Diana will send me gifts out of the blue,” said Jude, “such as cards and albums she made herself. I would fill my office with them!”

Time out as a couple is important as well. “Life has become more challenging since our daughter came along,” said Lillian. “When our girl is taking her afternoon nap or asleep at night, we try to spend some couple time just chatting with each other.” Diana and Jude make it a point to go on short holidays without the kids. “We ‘steal’ some time off when we can, such as going for a late supper when the kids are asleep.”

Both couples also take part in HomeTeamNS activities and use the clubhouse facilities. “We attend the Home Team Family Day whenever we can, and we’ve taken part in the REAL Run many times,” said Lillian. Diana also brings her young ones to swim at the Balestier clubhouse. “We’re going to take up bowling next – the kids can join us when they’re older!”W

Get your groove on and have fun at the same time!

Aye Carumba, It’s ZumbaZumba by 1fiesta at HomeTeamNSZumba is a Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness programme pioneered by Alberto "Beto" Perez during the 1990s – he “accidentally” created zumba because he had forgotten to bring his music tapes to his class and ended up having to improvise using some old tapes he had in his bag! 1fiesta offers various types of zumba classes. With morning and evening options every day, you can join the party anytime.

Dance Your Way to Bollywood!Bollywood Dance at HomeTeamNSIt’s fun, it’s expressive and it sure uses a lot of energy – Bollywood dancing is a wholesome activity that demands 100 percent of your body, mind and soul to really feel the rhythm and beats. Another great thing about Bollywood dancing is the cultural aspect. How many dances out there can help you drop the pounds and teach you a thing or two about a whole new culture?

Pole Groovin’Bobbi's Pole StudioPole dancing isn’t the easiest type of dance out there – take one look at the many different poses and you can tell this is not for the faint-hearted. life on the line LTA Mohammad Sayraz Khan has a burning passion for saving lives

This is a true story of how an obese recruit overcame the odds to become a top firefighter. LTA Mohammad Sayraz Khan tells Frontline why he puts his life on the line to keep us safe.

What do you do in the SCDF?I’m currently a Rota Commander at the Fire and Rescue Training Centre, Civil Defence Academy. Here I train a platoon of around 30 recruits to be firefighters at our fire stations. I’m also the Course Administrator of the 50th Fire Fighter Course, where I plan and manage the training of 140 trainees.

What drives you to excel in what you do?During my PTP phase as an obese recruit, my instructors motivated me to train hard. I lost 18kg and was selected to join the 5th Section Commander Course. I eventually got the “Best in Practical” award and achieved Silver in IPPT. When I was posted to Changi Fire Station as a Section Commander, I responded to fire and rescue incidents, and this made me realise the importance of SCDF in times of crisis. Then I was selected to cross over to the 4th Rota Commander Course, where I managed to achieve IPPT Gold and graduate as a Senior Officer.

What’s next in your career?I have a Higher Nitec in Mechanical Engineering, but I know a better qualification is important if I want to be a regular Senior Officer in the SCDF. So I got a place in Singapore Polytechnic to do a diploma in Aerospace Engineering, and I’m glad to have done well enough to go straight into the second year of the course.

Any advice for aspiring firefighters?Be fit in both body and mind. This is a job that demands both physical and mental strength – you’ll be entering a burning building when everyone else is getting out of it! Have passion in your work and realise that lives are at stake in every operation, every day.

SC2 (NS) Irfan Nasir bends it like Beckham on the cricket pitchright on the bat

To SC2 (NS) Irfan Nasir, sports is all about perseverance and playing fair. The national cricketer is now a coach for several schools including Tanglin Trust School, National Junior College and ACS (International).

What do you do in the SPF?I was an Assistant Finance Officer in the Police Technology Department.

how did you get started in cricket?I started cricket when I was ten. My dad used to play for cricket clubs in Singapore, and he introduced the game to me. My elder brother was a national player for Singapore. So they influenced me to pick up the game. I am an off spin bowler, and my job is to make it difficult for the batsman to hit the ball.

how did you become so good in what you do?I take cricket seriously and I train hard. I’ve always pushed myself as a player and I want to improve all the time. I train three times a week with the national team, and on weekends I play for my club, the SCA Colts. I also played for the police team during my NS days.

What’s next in your cricket career? There’s still some way to go, but I’d like to be able to go overseas (England) and play professional cricket if given the chance. It’s always been my dream to play professional cricket.

Any advice for aspiring cricketers? It’s important to train hard. Hard work always pays off in the end. Even if you don’t see the results now, it’ll pay off eventually. Don’t be disheartened if you’re not selected for certain tournaments and tours. Keep persevering. Finally, always fair and clean, as this is what sports is all about.

(1) Enak Enak Hong Kong Tea HouseA surprise find in the enclave of Muslim restaurants in Simpang Bedok, this almost 24-hour place serves Western food, tze char and dim sum as well. The golden sand bun is satisfying enough, although it could have come with a little more filling. One of the few places where you can find halal dim sum in Singapore.

Where 340/342 Bedok RoadOpen Mon–Sun 10am–6amPrices $2.60 for golden sand bun (2 pcs), $3.50 for har kow (3 pcs)

(3) Nasi Lemak KukusThis place is known for its free flow of nasi lemak, but this is no ordinary coconut rice. The fragrance of the lemak shines through in the fluffy rice, which is painstakingly steamed instead of being cooked in water (hence “kukus”). Another winner is their delightful sweet and spicy sambal – also free flow – and the funky and relaxed setting makes it a great place to supper with family and friends. Wash it all down with their Vietnamese drip coffee.

Where 908 Upper Thomson RoadOpen Tue–Sun 6pm–3amPrices $4 for chicken wing set, $2.50 for Vietnamese drip coffee

(5) Sunset Grill & PubKnown for its spicy buffalo wings, Sunset Grill has moved from Seletar Airbase to the slightly more accessible neighbourhood of Jalan Kayu (hurray!). Choose from levels one to ten for the buffalo wings, which go really well with the chile con carne, while mushroom lovers should try the deep fried button mushrooms.

Where 259 Jalan KayuOpen Mon/Wed/Thu/Sun 4pm–9.30pm, Fri/Sat 4pm–10pm (closed on Tuesdays)Prices $18.70 for buffalo wings (6 pcs), $17 for chile con carne, $16.50 for deep fried button mushroomswww.sunsetgrillandpub.com

(2) Omakase BurgerThis is for real burger fans. Here they roll handmade US beef patties into a ball and then smash them penyet-style, which makes them crisp outside and oozing with juicy flavour inside. There’s also a Mini-Me Kids Meal to keep the young ones happy. A real gem of a find in the former Turf City.

Where 200 Turf Club Rd #01-05 The GrandstandOpen Mon–Sun 11am–10pmPrices $13.90 for Omakase Cheeseburger, $14.90 for Oven-Baked Parmesan Chicken, $13.90 for Mini-Me Kids Meal, $4.90 for sweet potato frieswww.omakaseburger.com

(4) Lim Seng Lee Duck Rice Eating House This is one of the best places to have duck rice in Singapore. The thinly sliced meat drenched in smooth braise sauce taste more tender than chicken, and the accompanying rice or porridge is instant gratification. The portions are not big, and the service can be lacking at times, but the taste alone is compelling enough for many to make the long drive down.

Where 38 South Buona Vista RoadOpen Tue–Sat 10.30am–8.30pmPrices From around $10 for a duck meat platter for two

Poison Ivy BistroThis is just about as far-flung as you can get in Singapore. At this homely restaurant at Bollywood Veggies, the food is picked right from the backyard, so it’s reassuringly fresh and free of pesticides. After a good lunch of curry and sweet potato leaves, you can have a free stroll at the back of the plantation and enjoy the fresh air. Parking is free.

Where 100 Neo Tiew RoadOpen Wed–Sun 9am–6.30pmPrices $4 for starters, $6 for mainswww.bollywoodveggies.com

Put like with likeStreamline your belongings by ridding yourself of volume. Classify all items like wires, food types and clothing according to their function. You’d be surprised how many similar items you really have!

Don’t keep it if you don’t need itNot sure whether to keep or throw something? Ask yourself how much you think you’ll use it in future. Does that justify the space it’s taking up now? Think of yourself as a landlord and your items as hoarders, and you’ll know who are the “freeloaders” to kick out. If it’s too good to throw away, donate it.

Dress Your Home RightStart afresh for 2013 with these simple tips!

Settle it right here, right nowBe brutal. Don’t put off deciding whether something should be done, such as filing some documents or repairing some items that you “haven’t had the time” to do so. Let’s not kid ourselves – you’ll never get around to doing it, so you might as well throw it all away.

De-clutter in layers and laps When you clean your home, you’re also peeling back the layers of your life. When it comes to precious photos and documents, you’ll need a little more time to stroll down memory lane. Have a vision of the life you want, and the person you want to be. Does the item fit into that vision? If not, time to let it go.

Spring cleaning may sound like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Break the job into small parts by tackling one room at a time. It’s also easier if you resolve to clean your home for 15 minutes every day, instead of doing it in one fell swoop. Here are four tried-and-tested tips to make your home new again!

Make your home your own with colour, light and textures. When it comes to colour, do you prefer your home in analogous (similar) hues like yellow and orange, or complementary shades like red and green? Your choice of lights, be it fluorescent and LED overheads or floor and table lamps, can impart an industrial or cosy feel, so choose carefully. Curtains or a statement rug provide texture that add warmth and focal points in a room, while throw cushions give your room accent pops.

It is estimated that one in five people suffer from moderate to severe chronic pain, and that one in three is unable or less able to lead an independent lifestyle due to their pain. When it comes to managing pain, we often think of painkillers such as Panadol, Ponstan, Tramadol, Voltaren, codeine – and in more severe cases, Pethidine and morphine. But are such painkillers a sustainable long-term solution? Find out how you can deal with conditions such as headache, migraine, neuralgia, arthritis, gout, backache, frozen shoulder, stiff neck and carpal tunnel syndrome. The first ten participants will receive free Energia beads and jug worth $99.

About the speakerVeronica Ong is a nurse manager turned entrepreneur. She had worked in various hospitals and managed an elderly and day rehabilitation centre with The Salvation Army. In 2000, she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and later, Grave’s Disease, an overactive immune condition where her body was unable to balance her thyroxin. At that point she decided to take control of her own health as opposed to relying wholly on modern medicine. She strongly believes that we all possess a powerful immune system that can heal our body naturally.

The Home Team launches book dedicated to Home Team Volunteers

StorieS from the heart

Husband and wife CPL(V) Michael Kong and CPL(V) Melissa Han met while volunteering on the medical team at the Singapore Grand Prix 2008.

The Home Team Volunteers featured in the book pose for a

photo with A/P Ho Peng Kee.

HTVN Chairman A/P Ho Peng Kee places an origami heart on a board to mark the launch of Many Hearts for Home.

In the book Many Hearts for Home, 27 volunteers from the Home Team Volunteer Network (HTVN) tell of their commitment, their passion and the challenges they face in being a volunteer.

One story was of couple CPL(V) Michael Kong and CPL(V) Melissa Han, both 28, who volunteer with the Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit Emergency Ambulance Services.

CPL(V) Kong once slipped into a week-long coma when he was 13, and this spurred him to save others just as others had saved him. “Volunteers play a big role in society, and every little thing we do can help or hurt others,” said CPL(V) Kong. “It is a commitment and a responsibility.”

Volunteering together has also given husband and wife much to talk about. “We discuss our experiences after work, even make calls while on duty to talk about the emergency cases we attend to,” said CPL(V) Han, a full-time nurse.

“This book is all about the spirit of volunteering. Although we are all in different schemes and agencies, we work for the same cause,” said Prison Volunteer Mohd Sinwan Bin Sidek, 54. “We all have our challenges, and I feel encouraged and inspired, knowing that I am not alone in this.”

The heartfelt stories in the book will be added as part of a shared repository of volunteer experiences that will be collated and shared on the HTVN website and H3 newsletter. W

Many Hearts for Home was launched at the first HTVN Leadership Conference on 3 November 2012 by Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, Chairman of HTVN, who presented the book with one origami heart – a symbol of love and care – to all the 27 volunteers featured in the book.

The inaugural conference aims to be a platform for volunteers to share and discuss issues on volunteer leadership. Three thousand copies of the book will be given to volunteers.

The book is available as a PDf at www.hometeamvolunteers.gov.sg.

‘E’ Division organises health screening workshop for PNSmen

on 29 September 2012, the NS leaders of SPF ‘E’ Division held a health screening workshop for around

100 PNSmen. This was part of the Healthy Lifestyle Active Living Workshop series held twice a year, where PNSmen get to assess their health and fitness by measuring their BMI, bone mass, body fat and metabolic age, as well as advice on passing IPPT/IPT, recap on RT and some simple fitness exercises.

These PNSmen were unable to pass their IPPT and had to attend 20 sessions of RT. Many of them were obese, smokers or leading a sedentary lifestyle. With the soft launch of the NS Health & Fitness Framework and collaboration with the Health Promotion Board, the NS leaders took the opportunity to include the HPB as a partner with three talks: “Manage Your Health”, “Introduction to iDAT” and “Smoking Cessation”.

The “Manage Your Health” talk highlighted the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the link to top killer diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and cancer, as well as tips to “work out smart” through daily activities such as housework.

Next, the PNSmen were introduced to a smartphone app called iDAT (Interactive Diet and Activity Tracker), which is designed to help track food intake, physical activity and calculate calorie balance for Asian users.

The session ended with the “Smoking Cessation” talk, where the participants learnt how first-hand and second-hand smoke can harm people around them. They were also referred to the HPB QuitLine for advice on how to quit smoking. The talk also featured a free smoking breathanalyser test for participants to find out about their lung condition.

The workshop has raised the participants’ awareness of the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. These NSmen have taken the first step towards a healthier lifestyle not just for themselves but also by sharing this message with their family and friends.

on 1 November 2012, SCDF Key Appointment Holders and Responsibility Appointment Holders joined the Crisis Volunteers for the first time to learn about what’s

happening in the SCDF. The “Connected and Connecting with SCDF 2012” workshop was a great opportunity for the NSmen to share their experience in SCDF operations and events, and to catch up with one another over the buffet reception that was held prior to the workshop.

First on the podium was AC Chong Hoi Hung, Senior Director (Corporate Services), who updated the participants on the latest developments and new units formed in the SCDF, such as the Civil Defence Marine Command. The SCDF has plans to design and build more marine vessels to augment its capabilities and deploy NS personnel in marine operations. The NSmen also learnt about

Next up was LTC Alvin Tan, Head Ops 2nd CD Division, who shared his experience at the fire rescue operations at East Village Hotel. This was followed by LTA Huang Rong Sheng, a ROTA Commander from Central Fire Station, who recounted how his team extracted the bodies of two workers buried in wet cement at the Bugis scaffold collapse incident. Both operations serve as good case studies due to their challenging nature. The workshop ended with an update on upcoming changes to the Crisis Volunteer Scheme.

“The presentation showcased the achievements that the SCDF has worked so hard to accomplish,” said participant MAJ (NS) Raizan Abdul Razak. “I am proud to be a part of this organisation.”

Recognise, Reward and Support

The HomeTeamNS-JOM clubhouse celebrated its 11th year with a dinner party on 2 November, with SPF Commissioner

Mr Ng Joo Hee as the guest of honour. Entertaining the 280 guests were emcee Samson Zee and karaoke champions Mr Saifuldin and Mr Irwan, as well as thrilling acts from a contortionist and an escape artist, who hammered a four-inch nail into his nose.

The guests were also treated to a lucky draw, with a massage chair worth $3,800 as the top prize. The dinner ended with Mr Ng presenting the Most Supportive Organisation Award 2012 to the two divisions that use the most facilities in the clubhouse in the past year. The SPF recipient was Mr Lu Yeow Lim, Commander of Tanglin Police Division, while the SCDF recipient was Mr Chew Keng Tok from the Civil Defence Academy.

Apart from recognising the contributions of our SPF and SCDF NSmen, HomeTeamNS also values the sacrifices made by their families. One way to acknowledge their sacrifices is to help them with their children’s education through our annual Children’s Education and Achievement Awards.

These awards aim to encourage the children of HomeTeamNS Ordinary members to achieve excellent academic results and participate actively in co-curricular activities and community involvement programmes. The award amounts, which range from $300 to $1,000, help to reduce the financial burden of the parents.

A total of $126,000 was disbursed to 230 children. The breakdown for each of the award categories is shown below:

The HomeTeamNS Auto Adventure Club has done it again! Leading for the third time, AAC Chairman Mr Low Lai Choon and his committee brought 31

participants on a weekend road trip to Malacca on 17 and 18 November.

After setting off from the Bukit Batok clubhouse, the first stop was Gelang Patah, where the convoy had a hearty breakfast of noodles and dim sum. Another two and a half hours later, the group arrived at the new and comfortable Hatten Hotel. After lunch at the Makko Nonya Restaurant, the participants set off on their own to explore the Menara Taming Sari (Revolving Tower), hop on a Duck Tour or relax with a river cruise.

With Palawan Mega Mall and Mahkota Parade Shopping Centre next to the hotel, there was plenty of shopping to be done. There was also plenty of action in the shophouses along Melaka Raya, with gift shops, dining options and spas galore. That evening, Mr Low took the group to the Portuguese Settlement, where everyone feasted on seafood cooked in Portuguese style.

The next day, the group visited the Tan Kim Hock Product Centre for biscuits, tidbits and local produce. After dinner in Gelang Patah, it was time to make their way home. All participants had great fun on this relaxing adventure!
