AS CHORAL CONDUCTORS andartists-in-residence at our schools,non-profits, churches, and com-munity organizations, we have theawesome responsibility and amaz-ing opportunity to bring ART tohuman beings of every age, race,background, experience level, gen-der, and interest level. I capitalizeART because that word means somany different things to so manydifferent people. As a choral musiceducator who believes strongly inthe power of ART to bring peopletogether, both at the beginning oftheir musical journey in theCincinnati Boychoir and after highschool and college with the 600-member Young ProfessionalsChoral Collective, I have the privi-lege of watching people connect totheir community, to new friends, tonew experiences, and to new musicthrough singing together.

I was recently asked to sit on apanel as a team of highly successfulschool music educators asked whatskills they should bring to the livesof their students that would behelpful after they left their musicclassrooms. Although the discus-sion certainly touched on aspectsof music education that can befrustrating (testing, scheduling,funding) and non-musical skills

that are taught through the lens ofmusic (listening, leadership, puz-zle-solving, teamwork), the focusof our time together centeredaround the idea that music andART reach kids and should con-tinue to reach people because ARTmakes humans happy and engagedand communicative and con-nected. Music—ART—is a gift thatshould travel with people in theirdaily lives because of its beauty, itspower, its joy, and its ability tocross over boundaries.

e children and beginnerswhom we reach today throughART should become the code-breakers in their community. Somany people shy away from thesymphony, from a choral musicconcert, from a museum, or froman opera because they feel asthough they don’t have the skills,understanding, or secret knowl-edge to be a part of ART. But asconductors and artists, part of ourgoal must be to create a passion forstorytelling in our singers. eyshould go into the world and“break the code” about ART forothers by sharing their experiences,discussing music that inspiredthem, bringing joy and fun to ARTsevents, and helping to eliminate afeeling of “us” and “them.”

As I walkedinto that schoolwhere I wasabout to sit on a panel to discussART, I overheard a few other non-ARTs teachers talking about an in-vitation to a local ballet event. Oneteacher (who could be described as“sportsy”) said, “Hmm, ballet. I’venever been to a ballet. Wait, theNutcracker is a ballet…right? Iknow what that is, but I don’t thinkI’d like ballet.” No one else in hisgroup was able to talk about balletor the experience of being wrappedup with scenery, music, skill andART. When I relayed this to themusic educators, they smiled; andbecause all of us ART leaders aredreamers and do-ers, I could seetheir brains start to spin. Let’s con-tinue to spin and find new ways toreach singers, audience members,and people within our communi-ties. We are fortunate to have thepower of ART at our disposal, andOCDA is an important part of arich community of amazing choralconductors. I look forward to sit-ting on the OCDA board as we allcontinue to find new and excitingways to lead our organizations, in-spire our singers, and connect toour world through ART. d

NARRATIVE SCENARIO NUMBER 1:

It was October 2002, PrinceWilliam County, Virginia, outsideof Washington, D.C. e Washing-ton, D.C., sniper shootings weretaking place all around the metro-politan area. After killing 10 peopleand wounding 3 in a 3-week ram-page, John Allen Muhammad and17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo werefinally arrested on ursday, Octo-ber 24, just prior to the scheduledPrince William County SeniorHigh School Choral Festival. I had

been invited to conduct the festi-val’s mixed choir and was not cer-tain until the last minute whetheror not the event would take place.Residents in the area had been re-stricted to their homes for threeweeks; schools were closed andevening honor choir rehearsalscancelled. I arrived in the Countyon Friday, October 25, the first daythe community ventured out fol-lowing the snipers’ arrests. When Ipulled into the parking lot of themotel where I was scheduled to

stay, I noticedimmediatelythat it was located across the streetfrom a Michael’s crafts store, one ofseveral businesses the snipers hadtargeted during their spree. In themotel lobby were many sharpshoot-ers dressed in fatigues and carryingrifle cases. ey were preparing toleave the area because their difficulttask was finally finished.

e next day I drove from themotel to the school to meet thesingers for the first time. As was

my usual practice and somethingfor which I was often selected as aguest conductor, I had planned avaried program of diverse music inseveral languages. e program se-lections began with William Byrd,moved through works by VictorParanjoti, Ysaye Barnwell, FloryJagoda, and Glenn Burleigh, andconcluded with “Ngikhumbuli,” aSwazi song from South Africa. e

choir before me turned out to bediverse as well. ere were a num-ber of immigrant students repre-senting West Africa, CentralAmerica, and the Far East. I sensedimmediately that the students wererelieved that the arrests had beenmade and thrilled to be out of theirhomes. ey were eager to singand ready to work together tomake up for the lost rehearsal time.

On Friday afternoon, two of myformer music education studentsfrom Gettysburg College who wereemployed as music teachers innearby Fairfax County, Virginia,surprised me by leaving theirschools early to observe the re-hearsal. One of the women hadbeen a member of the World MusicChoir that I directed and had sungthe South African selection that wasto close the program. When it cametime to teach the movement for thisselection, she joined me on stage toassist with the instruction. erewas no technology equipment toshow the group the authentic ‘infor-mants’ performing the movement inthe video model. As the studentsbegan to work with my former stu-dent, they suddenly became evenmore energized and learned themovement quickly and well.

By the time of Saturday after-noon’s performance, the singerswere ready. Despite their inter-rupted advance music preparation,they had become a unified choir ina short amount of time. As wewalked together on stage to per-form, we quickly observed that theauditorium was filled to capacity,with standing room only. erewas almost an electric feeling inthe air as the excitement of the stu-dents connected with the excite-ment of the audience. After eachselection, the applause was longand loud. When the final SouthAfrican Swazi song concluded, theaudience jumped to its feet and ex-ploded in long applause and cheer-ing, and members of the HonorChoir joined in as well. It was obvi-ous to everyone that the concertexperience had been successful;

congratulations bubbled up and ex-tended out into the parking lot as Iwalked to my car. e exhilaratingexperience of preparing and lead-ing this choir was unlike any I hadever had, and it confirmed for methe transformative power of musicand this particular world choralmusic program, for the singers, theconductor, and the community.John Allen Muhammad was latersentenced to death and executed;Lee Boyd Malvo is serving a sen-tence of life in prison without thepossibility of parole.

NARRATIVE SCENARIO NUMBER 2:

It was the fall of 2011 at the Uni-versity of Dayton, where I teachand serve as Department Chair.e UD World Music Choir, whichI founded and direct, and which

has sung for campus events includ-ing Saudi Arabia National Day,Culture Fest, and the InternationalFestival, was invited to sing for theschool’s annual observance ofKristallnacht, Germany’s Night ofBroken Glass, marking the begin-ning of the Holocaust. e obser-vance also remembered theCatholic ‘religious’ who helpedprotect Jewish people as they hidand tried to escape from Germanyand surrounding countries. UD is aprivate Marianist Catholic institu-tion; a Marianist Sister organizedthe event; the service took place inthe Catholic University Chapel; aRabbi and other representativesfrom the Dayton Jewish commu-nity participated in and attendedthe service. e World MusicChoir sang the Paul Caldwell and

Sean Ivory arrangement with violinof “Ani Ma’Amin” (“I Believe”), thetraditional Jewish song reported tohave been sung by the Jews as theywalked to the crematoria. eKristallnacht event led to an invita-tion for the World Music Choir tosing for the Jewish Federation ofGreater Dayton’s annual HolocaustRemembrance Day service at theconservative Beth Abraham syna-gogue near the University’s campusin April 2012.

For the April service, the WorldMusic Choir performed “AniMa’Amin” again and led the assem-bled congregation in the singing of“Hatikvah,” the national anthem ofIsrael, and the “Star Spangled Ban-ner.” For most of the students in thechoir, this was their first experiencein a Jewish synagogue. Because the

congregation was conservative, allthe men in the choir had to wearyarmulkes to enter the synagogue.During the observance, many inthe choir were moved to tears asthey listened to Holocaust sur-vivors’ powerful stories andwatched congregation memberscry as the students sang “AniM’Amin.” e choir’s role in theservice was received so well that inaddition to the annual Kristall-nacht event in the fall, the ensem-ble now sings annually for the Jew-ish Federation’s spring Holocaustobservances. Following one JewishFederation performance, an inter-national student in the WorldMusic Choir from Beijing reportedthat the service was the first timehe had heard about the Holocaustbecause the subject was not part of

his school education in China.Other students shared their per-sonal and often powerful reflec-tions, including the following:

• “When you perform music thatis meaningful to your audience,the performance is not aboutthe performer anymore. elook of awe in [the people’s] eyestruly makes you realize this. Youcan look out and see tears, love,and pain all at the same time. Ilearned that the power of musicis still there even when I want togive up on it.”

• “All of [my learning in school]about the Holocaust…did notprepare me for what I witnessedor heard at the synagogue. It isvastly different to read about anexperience in a novel versusseeing and hearing an [elderly]man tell…his story in real life.To hear the pain, suffering, and

the still unanswered questionsin his voice makes my hearthurt. I did not understand theextent of the suffering. I couldnot grasp the gory details andpain.”

• “My grandmother was part ofthe ethnic German genocideafter World War II and was in alabor camp for three years.Hearing of the experiences ofthe survivors reminded me ofwhat my own grandmotherwent through.”

• “Seeing the faces of the peoplein the synagogue when we sangthe funeral march was hard.Seeing the people crying andthe sad faces was heartbreaking,and I am surprised that I didnot start crying on the stage.…When the men got up to singthe prayers, I began to cry…Icould not understand thewords, but the fact that the

It was truly heart wrench-ing. I was glad to be part ofsomething so special and im-portant. It made me realize howfortunate I am as a person tolive in the society I live in nowand how fragile freedom is.”

NARRATIVE SCENARIO NUMBER 3:

e year was 2000…. e day wasFebruary 12, Lincoln’s birthday. Iwas working with an All-DistrictHigh School Women’s HonorChoir. e selections includedWallace Hornady’s arrangement ofthe popular Korean folk song,“Nodle Kangbyon” (Beside theNodle River). As we were rehears-ing in the choir room, I noticed asmall Asian woman standing justinside one of the entrance doors.She was holding a broom, and shehad a bright smile on her face andtears in her eyes. She was the Ko-rean custodian, and hearing us singthis song from her country broughther both joy and longing for herhome at the same time. When weasked her how we were doing withthe song, she said, “It’s beautiful!”

Next door to the choir room,

the All-District Honor Orchestrawas in rehearsal. During one oftheir breaks that coincided withours, one of my singers broughtthree girls from the orchestra tosee me. A brief conversation re-vealed that the girls were newly ar-rived immigrants from SouthKorea. ey offered to help thechoir with the pronunciation of“Nodle Kangbyon” and did so afterour break. In addition, and despitethe fact that they were string in-strument players who did not singvery often, they agreed to go withme to a practice room during lunchto record the song and the textpronunciation. I still have therecording we made that day andhave used it often with otherchoirs. At our concert, the women’schoir singers applauded enthusias-tically when I introduced our newKorean “informants” to the audi-ence and explained how they hadhelped us. Sometimes it is not nec-essary to look very far for assis-tance with world music, its lan-guage, history, and cultural con-text. Resources can be all aroundyou, and the connections you makewith those resources can yield un-expected positive experiences. Inthis instance a variety of immi-grants were moved to hear the en-semble sing this folk song and feltincluded as they interacted withthe choir in different ways. esingers, in turn, were transformedby the new connections they madewith these people from the culture.

THESE THREE SCENARIOS may bringto mind several questions and leadto reflection on these and other per-sonal transformative experiences

with world choral music. How dothese experiences occur? What canhelp ensure the transformativepower of the music and the per-formances? Take time to consider

• making a commitment to thecause and mission of worldmusic to educate singers andcommunities globally and topromote cultural sensitivity andunderstanding;

• being willing to study, under-stand, and teach diverse reper-toire;

• using choral ensembles as vehi-cles for world choral music, bal-anced with more traditionalrepertoire;

• making time to work with newmaterial that may require morepreparation, rather than usingperformance time pressure asan excuse;

• creating balanced programs thatnot only entertain but also edu-cate and edify singers and audi-ences;

• fearlessly taking risks in eachsituation;

• seeking assistance from manydifferent sources, includingone’s own choir members;

• remembering that serendipitymay become opportunity;

• being an advocate for worldchoral music; and

• being prepared in each situationfor the possible emotional im-pact the music may have onyou, your singers, and your au-diences.

By keeping these points inmind, every choral director may bebetter able to create transformativemusic experiences for ensemblesingers, audiences, and communitymembers through comprehensivelearning about choral music andpeople of the world. d

EACH YEAR the OCDA board selectsan outstanding choral educator forthe Distinguished Service Award.is year’s recipient is much morethan outstanding; Dr. Wade Raridonhas influenced Ohio choral musicfor more than five decades. Raisedin Carroll, Iowa, Dr. Raridonearned his B.A. degree in music atthe University of Iowa in 1956 andcompleted his master’s the follow-ing year.

Dr. Raridon taught in the DanaSchool of Music at YoungstownState University for 41 years. Dur-ing his tenure, Dr. Raridon foundedthe Dana Chorale as well as theDana Madrigal Singers. In additionto building a choral program of ex-cellence, he taught music theory,choral literature, diction, and vocalperformance. As a result of his edu-cational leadership, Dr. Raridon re-ceived the YSU Distinguished

Award for excellence in teaching. Inaddition to his university credits,Dr. Raridon has mentored numer-ous high school choral directors.

According to his letter of nomi-nation, Dr. Raridon was “alwayswilling to share his passion forquality choral music. ‘Doc’ collabo-rated with area high school direc-tors to create and conduct the an-nual Chamber Choir Festival, aday-long event involving over 300high school choristers and culmi-nating in a performance. Over themany years that he led the festival,he influenced thousands of highschool students through his relent-less, positive, and enthusiastic mes-sage about the art of choral music.”Dr. Raridon also created events atYoungstown State for high schoolchoirs, like the Madrigal Fest,which provided high school choirsan opportunity to share madrigal

singing withtheir peers aswell as with col-legiate choirs.

An active member of bothACDA and OCDA, Dr. Raridonheld the offices of President andTreasurer. In presenting the Distin-guished Service Award, WilliamZurkey shared a memory of Dr.Raridon’s skills in saving theOCDA a considerable sum duringhis term as treasurer. Our awardrecipient also served as a vocal ad-judicator for choral events intwelve states. A lyric tenor, Dr.Raridon has performed manyrecitals, often collaborating withhis wife, Rosemary, a former mem-ber of the Dana voice faculty.

Following his retirement fromYSU in 2004, Dr. Raridon contin-ued to serve as an influential musi-cian through the founding of theWade Raridon Singers, a chamberchoir composed of many formerstudents, dedicated to the perform-ance of quality choral repertoire.Dr. Raridon continues to promotethe best of choral literature, andlives out his belief that this litera-ture has a significant impact on in-dividuals as well as society.

Musicians, students, and com-munity members reflect 50 years ofdedication and Dr. Wade Raridon’s“persistent passion for excellencein the choral art.”

AN EXCITING BUZZ continues tobuild across OCDA and the Cen-tral Division surrounding theACDA International ConductorsExchange Program (ICEP). Creat-ing and fostering meaningful rela-tionships with choral organizationsaround the world continues to bean important mission of ACDA. Itsrole in our continued developmentof choral music education has beenoverwhelmingly positive, and I’mexcited to see the program’sgrowth. e three core objectivesof ICEP are:

• to create connections betweenpotential leaders of the U.S.choral community with coun-terparts across the globe;

• to forge stronger relationshipsbetween the American ChoralDirectors Association andchoral associations across theworld; and

• to raise the visibility and leader-ship role of the AmericanChoral Directors Association inthe global choral community.

e inaugural ICEP collabora-tion was launched in 2010 with anexchange with Cuba, coincidingwith the 2012 divisional confer-ences. Since this initial and highlysuccessful exchange, ACDA hascontinued to sustain and buildupon these collaborative engage-ments in an effort to provide en-riching educational and artistic ex-periences to many of our fellowcolleagues, singers, and students.Subsequent exchanges with our in-ternational counterparts includeChina (2014) and Sweden (2015).Fourteen 2015 ICEP ConductingFellows from ACDA traveled thisfall to Sweden to embark on a vari-ety of musical adventures. Con-gratulations to Bexley High Schoolchoral conductor Amy Blosser forrepresenting Ohio in the exchangewith Sweden this year!

Building upon the strength andsuccess of these previous ex-changes, ACDA has partnered withSouth Korea for a conductor ex-

change in 2016.ACDA will hostfourteen choral conductors fromSouth Korea to coincide with eachdivisional ACDA conference. Iwould also like to recognize andcongratulate Zebulon Highben, Director of Choral Activities atMuskingum University, who wasrecently selected to participate inthis upcoming exchange withSouth Korea.

OCDA will have the opportu-nity to host one of the two CentralDivision international conductorsfrom South Korea following theconference in Chicago, February24–27, 2016. I encourage you tomeet and learn from our esteemedcolleagues from Korea at the con-ference, and if you are interested inhosting one of these internationalguests at your institution followingthe conference, please let me know.I will be glad to help you work outthe details of a residency. Further-more, as ICEP Central Division

GREETINGS! It is my honor to servefor the next two years as SummerConference Coordinator. I knowmany of you, but would like to in-troduce myself to those of you I’venot had the opportunity to meet. Ihold a B.M. from Capital Univer-sity and an M.M. in choral con-ducting from e Ohio State Uni-versity. I am currently Director ofMusic at Indianola PresbyterianChurch in Columbus and alsoserve as chorus master for OperaProject Columbus. I’ve served onthe faculties of e Ohio State Uni-versity Marion campus and OhioWesleyan University.

OCDA’s 2015 Summer Confer-ence was held this year June 22–24,on the campus of Otterbein Univer-sity in Westerville. is year’s head-lining clinician was Simon Carring-ton, co-founder of e King’sSingers and former Professor ofMusic at Yale University. Carring-ton presented sessions on a varietyof topics including intelligentwarmups, singing and teachingRenaissance music, and his tenurewith e King’s Singers. is year’sconference featured three cliniciansfrom Ohio: Kristina Caswell Mac-

Mullen, Associate Professor ofMusic at e Ohio State University;Howard Helvey, composer, organ-ist/choirmaster at historic CalvaryEpiscopal Church, and director ofthe Cincinnati Fusion Ensemble;and Amy Johnston Blosser, ChoralDirector at Bexley High School.Sessions by the Ohio clinicians in-cluded artful movement and dy-namic formation in performance(MacMullen), a brief survey on thecompositional process (Helvey),and the creation of a successfulchoral program through appropri-ate literature selection (Blosser).

e conference boasted manygreat performances as well, includ-ing the Firestone High School Sym-phonic Choir, directed by ChadPittman; the Masterworks Chorale,directed by Tim Cloeter; theCincinnati Children’s Choir, di-rected by Robyn Lana; the Musk-ingum University ChamberSingers, directed by Zebulon High-ben; and the Cincinnati Boychoir,directed by Christopher Eanes.is year’s OCDA High SchoolHonors Choir was directed byLynda Hasseler and Frank Bianchi.is one-day event saw over 100

high schoolsingers join to-gether fromhigh schools across the state andperform several outstanding selec-tions. e annual Children’s HonorChoir is always a huge part of Sum-mer Conference, with singers ingrades 4–8 coming to participate inthis rigorous three-day event. isyear’s Children’s Honor Choir wasdirected by Christine Jordanoff.

Other conference highlights forthe 153 ACDA members in atten-dance included jam-packed readingsessions (with a new session featur-ing “choral gems”), highlighting thetireless work of our repertoire &standards chairs who hand-pick thebest music to share with you; ter-rific social events at Max & Erma’s(our annual Gemütlichkeit) andBrio; a crowded exhibit hall withseveral vendors from across thestate; and the presentation of thisyear’s Distinguished Service Awardto Wade Raridon, retired professorat Youngstown State University anda past president of OCDA.
