THE DIVISION OF HISTORICAL RESOURCES GRANTS STATE FUNDS TO ASSIST

HISTORIC PRESERVATION ACTIVITIES AS AUTHORIZED BY SECTION 267.0617, F.S.

oNewly-designated Main Street Programs can apply for a Small Matching Start-up

Grant of $25,000.

oMain Street Programs that have been inactive for 10 years can apply for a Small

Matching Re-Start-up Grant of up to $20,000.

oActive Main Street Programs can apply for other types of Small Matching Grants for

up to $50,000 with no match requirement (except for the Historical Markers type,

which requires a 1:1 match).

APPLICATION PROCESS

oThe Department’s online grants system can be found at dosgrants.com

oDetailed information on how to apply (including a sample application) and what

information to submit can be found at http://dos.myflorida.com/historical/grants

oA concise scope of work, detailed estimated budget, time line and supporting

documentation related to ownership, significance, and other items depending on

the project type.

oApplications are solicited a year prior to the availability of funds

oFunding is dependent on appropriation from the Legislature

oFunded projects must be completed within one State Fiscal Year (July 1-June 30)

oFunds are disbursed as fixed price payments, and a 25% advance is a possibility

Historical Markers Examples

o Single-sided markers ($1,900 total cost)

o Double-sided markers ($2,200 total cost)

o Markers can be monolingual or bilingual

o Image, drawing, or map of site can also be included on markers

Note: Text must be approved by the Florida Historical Marker Council before

applying. Marker must not be purchased prior to the award agreement execution

(July 1 of the year following application). The Division of Historical Resources grant

will cover half of the cost of the marker and installation.

o The online grants system (dosgrants.com) will require applicants to register as a new user (if not yet

registered), create a profile and associate themselves with an organization.

o The system will allow applicants to stop and save at any time while working on the application.

o Once the online application is complete, it can be submitted by hitting the “Submit” button.

o If there are any errors or issues the system will require these be addressed before submission.

o An Applicant Organization may submit only one (1) Small Matching application in a single

application submission period (exceptions exist for different budgetary units of universities and local

governments and for CLGs).

SUBMISSION AND REVIEWDHR Staff receives applications for completeness and eligibility; then

completed technical reviews.

PUBLIC MEETING

REVIEW AND RANKINGGrant Panel reviews and scores

projects; recommends them to the

Secretary of State.

SECRETARY OF STATESecretary of State reviews the

recommended projects list and submits award amount to the

Legislature as part of the budget request for the upcoming fiscal year.

LEGISLATURELegislature negotiates a final budget and submits it to the Governor for

signature.

APPROPRIATION

Governor either approves or vetoes

line items and then signs the budget.

Grantees are notified and Grant

Award Agreements are prepared for

review.
