OCTOBER 2019 F r o m t h e V i c a r : Dear Parishioners: Our world is a tense place. We are never certain what each day will bring, but we arise with the hope and the knowledge that Christ is risen and that the Holy Spirit is beside us to guide and to comfort. It is easy for me to write these words, but much harder for all of us to live into them espe- cially when we are in a personal, cultural, or national crisis. But no matter whether these words crumble at our feet or rise up to guide us, the God’s Truth still is the truth; we are loved and cher- ished by God even when we think that no one cherishes us, not even yourself. October is the month of St. Francis. I know that his feast day is just a day, but it is a day, whether celebrated or not, that the American culture recognizes. This was a man of faith who deeply be- lieved in God and who acted upon that faith; it was his very center, his compass guiding him throughout his life. Francis was so much at-one with God, that he could truly cherish all creatures, human and animal. He took to heart the teachings of the Gospel and made the teachings his action - plan for life. We might think that he was a little demented, or eccentric, or just a plan fanatic, but we remember him for what he did; his actions spoke volumes about what he believed. During this Francis Month, I challenge you to look at your life and the lives of the people around you and to cherish them; look at them the way that God looks at them. Look at the creatures who surround our towns and countryside and see them as beloved creatures—even when we think the world would be better off without them! Here are some suggestions that might aid you in your spiritual cherishing: Donate time and/or money to an animal shelter Send a card or visit someone whom you haven’t seen for a long time. Send a get-well card to someone who is sick. Give extra food and/or money to our food bank ministry; Donate extra new children’s clothing to the Department of Social Services Ministry Don’t take for granted those who love you; affirm their love Try loving the unlovable—even those with different political views Finally, say this prayer as often as you can and let the peace of St. Francis enter into you: Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is in- jury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen Peace, D a v i d T h o m p s o n

OCTOBER 2019

From the Vicar : Dear Parishioners: Our world is a tense place. We are never certain what each day will bring, but we arise with the hope and the knowledge that Christ is risen and that the Holy Spirit is beside us to guide and to comfort. It is easy for me to write these words, but much harder for all of us to live into them espe-cially when we are in a personal, cultural, or national crisis. Pledge $ 8,625.00 $ 9,766.67 -$ 1,141.67

Total $ 9,987.00 $ 11,683.34 -$ 1,696.34

Thank you for continuing to support our outreach ministries! In August we raised $328, plus a check for $500 which will be used to purchase goods for our var-ious outreach ministries. We have started a new

Meals on Wheels pet food outreach for Saluda, in addition to our program for Edgefield Meals on Wheels. All pet food brought to Trinity (Edgefield) will be taken to the Edgefield Senior Citizens Council and pet food brought to Grace (Ridge Spring) will be taken to Saluda. The col-lection plate donations are sent to the Johnston food bank quarterly to purchase food to distrib-ute to their participants. Unfortunately the food bank in Saluda has ceased operation. We dis-tribute food to the small Ridge Spring food bank (Life Ministry) once a month. Thanks to Ric Vann and Jerrold Watson for helping transport the food to the food banks and to Helen Feltham and Zelma Shore for taking the pet food to the Senior Centers. We also support the DSS Foster Children's program in Edgefield and are adding the DSS in Saluda. Leisa Long is transporting donations to the DSS. Bring your food donations (non perishable items, no glass please) to church each Sunday! The food banks can also distribute items such as toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, bar soap etc.) and don't forget spices! We also make a point of in-cluding pet food (dog & cat) to help people keep their pet animals, often their only source of companionship. If you would like to participate in this exciting outreach ministry but are unable to attend church, you may make a donation and mail to our church office address! (Make check out to Church of the Ridge with 'food bank' in the subject line) Mary Lou Seymour 803-334-1219 or [email protected]

Our Saviour Parish Hall

The Mission Council approved, overall, with some details still to be discussed, the Renova-tions Committee’s proposals for the kitchen, bathrooms and meeting area of the parish hall. The Committee is responsible for raising the money needed for these improvements. You will be hearing about their proposals in the coming weeks. Also, the Mission Council approved placing on the market, two lots in the Trenton area, which were given to the Church last year for the benefit of Our Sav-iour. Poo Alexander and Mary Derrick have graciously agreed to assist the Council in the sale of this land.

Blessing of the Animals October 6 - Trenton

Our annual Blessing of the Animals will take place at Our Saviour on the 6th at 3:00 pm; rain or shine. All animals are invited for the blessing. Please ensure that your pet is on leash, in a crate or what-have-you so that your pet is a “blessing” to all those (people and pets) attending. Refreshments for animals and humans will be served. Bring your pet and be part of the fun on October 6th.

Church of the Ridge Receives two Sanctus Bells

Trinity received a bell in memory of

William Ryght Timmerman, Jr. given by his niece and her husband,

Liz and Steve Jordan. Affectionately known as Uncle Bill, he was the

first man called into WWII from Edgefield County.

Grace received a bell in honor of the congrega-tion of the Church of the Ridge, given lovingly

by Zelma Shore.

Beyond the building The Christian does not go to the temple to wor-ship. The Christian takes the temple with him or her. Jesus lifts us beyond the building and pays the human body the highest compliment by mak-ing it his dwelling place, the place where he meets with us. —Ravi Zacharias
