In the end Hashem wants total participation because Tzedaka is an outcome oriented Mitzva. Intent and kavanna are important when performing the Mitzva but more crucial when giving Tzedaka the needy can survive and are properly cared for. May we be blessed to be the recipients of Hashems bountiful blessings.

This week’s Parsha of Terumah teaches us about the construction of the Mishkan and the records the first Shul fundraiser in history (it was very successful!). When it comes to giving tzedakah there are three types of philanthropists. 1) The first type is the individual who gives because of the Mitzva of Tzedaka. He is not swayed by the poverty or suffering of those in difficult circumstances - he is emotionally detached and gives purely because of the Mitzva. 2) The second category is very sensitive and cannot tolerate seeing another person hungry or a child without shoes – it tugs at their heartstrings and they give. 3) The third type is one who gives begrudgingly. They may be embarrassed into donating because everyone else is participating or they need an end of the year tax write off. They really have no interest in parting with their hard-earned money and giving it to strangers, but in the end they do. These three types of patrons are alluded to in the beginning of our Parsha. Hashem instructs Moshe

ויקחו לי תרומה, מאת כל איש אשר ידבנו לבו, תקחו את Take for Me a donation, of every man whose תרומתי

heart is willing, you shall take for Me a donation”. The first phrase refers to the altruistic patron who gives willingly purely to fulfill Hashem’s wish; the second gives as a result of emotional sensitivity; and the third feels as if his gift was forcefully extracted from him. In the end Hashem wants total participation because Tzedaka is an outcome oriented Mitzva. Intent and kavanna are important when performing the Mitzva but more crucial when giving Tzedaka the needy can survive and are properly cared for. May we be blessed to be the recipients of Hashem’s bountiful blessings.

Halachic Guide from Rabbi Yisroel Edelman

MachatzisHashekel When giving Machatzis Hashekel one should not lift the actual coins during these times of COVID – 19. Rather, one may fulfill the minhag of Machatzis Hashekel by placing paper money in the collection plates that will be provided. This minhag is merely a “Zecher l’Machatzis Hashekel” and not the actual mitzvah that was performed during the times of the Beis Hamikdosh.

Mishloach Manos The mitzvah is accomplished by sending two ready made food items to at least one friend (both foods may have the same bracha). The quantity of each of the two foods must be a “nice portion”. Extra care should be taken to maintain safety precautions when exchanging Mishloach Manos this year.

Purim Seudah - The Festival Meal of Purim As Purim is on Friday night, the Seudah should be eaten in a manner

that will not conflict with the Shabbos meal. The two best options are to start the meal in the morning before chatzos (midday) and finish well before Shabbos out of Kavod Shabbos. Another option is to start the meal at least 3 hours before sunset (after davening Mincha) and finish with enough time before Shabbos to have an appetite for the Friday night meal. We encourage everyone to carefully take into account the ongoing COVID – 19 restrictions regarding distancing when planning a seudah. Attendance should be more limited than in the past. If it involves people outside of your immediate family, distancing continues to be recommended, even if all attendees have completed a full vaccination cycle plus 14 days.

Matanot L’evyonim

The Rabbi is collecting money for Matanot L’evyonim that will be distributed locally on Purim day. Please give generously to properly fulfill this important mitzvah.
