SPICING UP THE SPA WITH GERMAINE DE CAPUCCINI
SAFER SOLUTION
GIVING SKIN THE EDGE
From the luxury spa and skincare brand
Germaine de Capuccini comes Spa Marine
Spice, a line of products incorporating a range
of spices from India, Turkey, Sri Lanka and the
Moluccan Islands.
For professional use only, two of the blends of
spices, Cinnamon Delight and Saff ron Delight,
both feature a unique new ingredient – a balm-
like skincare resin, which combines the benefi ts
of a cream and an oil.
Envirofl ow Solutions has unveiled an anti-
bacterial, water-saving shower head. It works
by using fragments of silver within the plastic
to prevent bacteria from accumulating on
the surface. Said to be ideally suited to health
clubs and spas, the shower head is claimed
to cut water and energy bills by up to 50 per
cent without impacting performance. Water is
emptied from the shower head via a small hole
used for the aeration process, rather than being
retained in the head to become stagnant.
Male bodycare company Flint Edge has
launched its fi rst ever Face Moisturiser, suitable
for spa retail. Said to provide the skin with
antioxidants and vitamins to balance hydration
levels, the paraben-free moisturiser comes in
a 50ml tube and is suitable for all skin types.

a stimulant; sacha inchi oil to moisturise

How important is training for a successful candidate in the spa industry? What do employers
look for when hiring? What areas are commonly lacking in the majority of can-didates and how can this be improved? In the following two columns, I will examine a range of pointers for what every spa therapists should have in their skillset.
Continuous and progressive training is important for any professional, but this is particularly true in the spa world. For all therapists, their training can often be fur-ther supported and enhanced by product houses, who provide more product-relat-ed education that can be of equal value to traditional routes of learning.
Something else to bear in mind is the issue of language barriers. Increasingly, spas are employing staff partly based on the number of languages they can speak, and this is often one of the key skills that employers will check for on a CV. Any lan-guage barrier you may have as a therapist will seriously hamper the effective delivery of a spa experience.
Finally, today’s employer is not only looking for recognised qualifi cations, but also knowledge of the latest tech-nologies, methods and trends within the industry. This equips you to become a fully-rounded professional, and informs everything you do.
To bring all these threads together, I believe that what our industry needs is a global standardisation of spa specialists’ education, from a universal regulating body. Training and syllabus should be of the same standard and content, irrespec-tive of what country you train in. This is extremely diffi cult to achieve, but most countries do have regulating bodies. If this can be achieved, our industry would be able to work towards a permanently better standard of operation.

THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT

Look at today’s headlines and one would believe the sky is indeed falling. At no other time in modern history have things gone so awry in such a short
amount of time. Who would have expected to be faced with the challenges we are today, especially after recent years of such progress with green initiatives?
We were on record growth paths in 2008 in the green market. We saw expansion of clean tech initiatives develop due to the skyrocketing prices of fossil fuels. The organic and natural products market continued its annual double digit growth, as did green building, due to advancements in health awareness and design. Both had seen years of expansion with no limits. Yet now everyone, ranging from consumers to corporations, are tightening their belts and this growth has slowed dramatically.
Many companies are now anticipating a single digit growth and I am hearing many say that zero is the new anticipated growth rate for the current time. This certainly looks like the end of the eco movement as we know it, but it certainly doesn’t mean it is the end of green itself.
Studies show that eco-consciousness has not left the consumer mindset. According to a January 2009 consum-er research report by the Natural Marketing Institute, 22 per cent of US adults reported buying fewer environmen-tally-friendly products as a result of the economy. This is presumably because of price, not because they have stopped being interested in the product. Meanwhile, the
2009 Conscious Consumer study by BBMG found that price and performance are still paramount. US consumers said price (66 per cent) and quality (64 per cent) topped their list of most important product attributes. But, health and environmental benefi ts have increased in importance since last year – including energy effi ciency (47 per cent in 2008, up 6 per cent), locally grown or made nearby (32 per cent, up 6 per cent), all natural (31 per cent, up 7 per cent), made from recycled materials (29 per cent, up 7 per cent) and USDA organic (22 per cent, up 5 per cent).
Despite the recession, consumers are still very engaged in environmental protection. However, consumer attitudes have changed from eco-elitism to that of conservation and frugality and are looking at products and services and that will provide more for their money. According to Raphael Bemporad, co-founder of BBMG: “The economic crisis has created a moment of refl ection where con-sumers are redefi ning what truly matters and evaluating purchases based on both value and values. This is a moment for leadership. By delivering on the multiple dimensions of value – price, performance and purpose – brands will be able to close the green trust gap, weather the economic storm and thrive long term.”
Times are certainly changing. For companies to main-tain their market position while keeping to green beliefs they must make adjustments that are relevant to spa goers and current circumstances.
