From the PrincipalDear Young Families,

We have had a great year learning and growing together as a school community. Young students and their teachers have worked very hard exploring and investigating new topics and learning standards. In addition, Young students have continued to focus on demonstrating the 3Rs (Respecting Others, Self, and Property) with their classmates and peers.

I would like to recognize and thank our parent community for their continued support with homework, grade level programs, book check-in/out in the LMC, and volunteering in the classroom. Thank you to the PTA Board and our parent volunteers for supporting school events such as classroom parties, school programs, family nights, and staff appreciation. These are just a few of the many events run by the PTA and parent volunteers. I would also like to thank Mrs. LaVine for changing the outside school sign every week, regardless of the weather conditions. The last weeks of school are filled with many activities. The LMC Book Fair, Dolphin Dash, Science and Math Assemblies, 5th Grade Farewell Party, Field Day, the End of the Year Assembly, and the Fine Arts Festival at Metea Valley High School.

Please find below a condensed list of the various activities that occurred over the course of the year. This has been a full year and we have enjoyed participating in many fun filled events sponsored by Young School and the Young PTA.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Thank-you Rachana Shenoy, Chantelle Thompson, and Hilda Rivera for helping with Spring pictures. They helped line the students up for the photographer, comb hair & adjust collars.

Thank you Mr. Maldonado, Mr. Hood, and Spirit Council for their help and support during Earth Week. Spirit Council created beautiful posters in honor of Earth Week. All their art work was displayed along our hallways. Spirit Council also started each day of Earth Week with Earth Day Fun Facts during morning announcements. Thank you to Dr. Bell for the Earth Day Fun Facts afternoon announcements and Jennifer Radina for all her support during Earth Week!

A big thank you to our Environmental Committee for providing bean plants to every student on Earth Day.

Thank you to our second grade parents and teachers for their help with the 2nd Grade Earth Day party on April 22nd. The students created a cute keepsake using their hand and finger prints and learned some tips about taking care of our environment. Thank you to our head room moms and all the volunteers who helped plan the party as well as help run the party. It was a fun afternoon for all of our 2nd grade students!

A huge THANK YOU goes out to Sherri Nugent and to all the volunteers who worked on 4th Grade State Fair. Sherri spent many countless hours organizing, emailing, purchasing, and making sure that everything ran smoothly for the performance and the party. THANK YOU!

A huge THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who worked on 4th Grade State Fair: Melissa Sofos, Mari Walbridge, Natalie Shaw, Carrie Czarnik, Priti Amin, Kristine Luster, Emily Dykstra, Brenda Montemayor, Jeanne Sheehan, Lakshmi Suram, Tracy Henkle, Joanne Jachimiec, Karen Welsh, Jody Taylor, Gail McClure, Farzana Kherani, Mary Ann Dichoso, Melinda Ontiveros, Jen Lester, Erin Leslie, Shahana Khan, Mindy Finch, Jaya Pothina, Pam Baldwin and John and Maxine Gaziano…for cutting and baking shrinky dinks, binding reports, helping with the license plate t-shirts, and helping decorate for and cleaning up after the program. There were so many people that helped in various ways, please accept our apology if anyone was not mentioned.

Thank you to Joanne Jachimiec for graciously letting us meet at her home to make the license plate t-shirts and for organizing and handing the heat press and for all the extra things she did behind the scenes to help.

The 4th grade team (Mrs. Bluhm, Mrs. Dodd, Mrs. Grezlik and Mrs. Hartje) and their students spent a great deal of time preparing for State Fair. Mr. Pape led the students in a wonderful State Fair evening performance, ending with a NYE favorite “Fifty Nifty.” The day after the program, the students enjoyed their State Fair party and played a game of State Fair Jeopardy. Thank you Ms. Morgan for being the game show host.

Also, a huge thank you to our custodian, Jay Novotny, for taking care of the building set up for the program and party.

A special thank you to Tammi Arostegui for all the time she spent “training” us and answering numerous questions about State Fair. You were a tremendous help!

Dear Parents/Guardians: If you have a child who will be five (5) years old on or before September 1, 2014, (as required by Illinois State Law), he or she is eligible to enroll in kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year. We are pleased to offer ALL-DAY kindergarten for your child. A HALF DAY kindergarten class is also available. The hours for both of the options are as follows:

Ø Half day 9:05 - 11:50 AM or 12:50 - 3:35 PM (your child will be assigned to either AM or PM)Ø All Day 9:05 A.M.-3:35 P.M.

You are being asked to indicate your preliminary choice of all day or half day kindergarten on the attached form. Parents are encouraged to return registration materials as soon as possible for planning purposes. The final deadline is May 23, 2014, after which changes in placement cannot be accommodated. Please note that if you select the half day option, your child may not necessarily attend his or her home school. Buses will be provided if your child attends a half day program at another school. Pre-registration and registration materials will be used to anticipate the need for half day kindergarten classes, but final decisions, including location, will not be made until after the registration deadline of May 23, 2014. We need the Pre-Registration information on the attached sheet as soon as possible, so that we can begin planning kindergarten enrollment for the upcoming school year. This Pre-Registration information will be used to form a kindergarten mailing list. Once on the mailing list, additional information will be mailed to eligible kindergarten parents. If you have any neighbors who do not presently have school-aged children, but will have an incoming kindergartner, please give them a copy of this form or ask them to call our office at Young Elementary School, 630-375-3800, so that we may send them this information. I look forward to meeting you at the Kindergarten Parent Preview Night.

Sincerely,

Ms. MorganPrincipal, Young School

2014-2015 PTA MEMBERSHIP

BOOK EXCHANGEWe are pleased to announce that we are putting a BOOK EXCHANGE into place at NYE. Students will be able to bring in gently used books and receive coupons to exchange for other gently used books.

This way, every child in our school will have the opportunity to read and “own” some books.

To gear up for this program, we are asking families to look through their bookshelves at home and send in any books that are appropriate for Kindergarten through 5th grade.

We will have boxes available in the LMC from Monday, May 5th through Friday, May 16th. Books should be deposited in the boxes provided.

More information about this program will be forthcoming. If you are interested in volunteering for this program, please contact Joanne Jachimiec at [email protected].

ONE BOOK/ONE SCHOOL BOOK DONATIONS

Our One Book/One School program is completed and we thank all of our families for their time and participation. To make this program even more rewarding, we are asking families to donate their The Sixty Eight Rooms book back to NYE so that we may pass it on to another school in our district for their use.

We will have boxes available in the LMC from May 5th through May 9th for depositing books.

This is completely voluntary. Thank you for your kindness!

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK EVENTS

Hi! I’m Noelle Thorne, Vice President of Nancy Young Spirit Council. I’m going to share with you some of the recent events Spirit Council has sponsored.

First there was Zumba Night! This was an optional way to exercise in a fun way with lots of dance routines. We had a great time as Ms. Morgan’s sister led the program!

The next event was Walk for Diabetes which was held during the school day. We had sixteen stations, all with different activities. This event was important because it raised money for people with Diabetes. All grades had fun at the Walk for Diabetes!

Thank you to the NYE staff and the parent volunteers for helping us with all of the Spirit Council events. It has been fun to be a part of Spirit Council this year! Thanks again!!!
