Berwick Secondary College, Newsletter 9, 20th September 2013
From the Principal’s Desk
We are always searching for opportunities to gain the best for our students, and we have implemented a number
of strategies to help get the best outcomes possible. Two of these strategies are occurring at this time of year.
Our students and teachers Ms Liana Mannens and Ms Michelle Lewis set off on their trip to Indonesia last
Wednesday, along with teachers and students from Timbarra P-9. Arriving at Yogyakarta, the trip is a ten day tour
incorporating cultural and language exposure, visiting a school, traditional markets and hands-on batik. I am
looking forward to seeing the photographs and hearing all about the trip when they get back.
The second of these strategies is happening over the next two weeks. We offer our Year 12 students study
sessions here at school through the school holidays. This final period of Year 12 Year is critical for VCE students in
preparing for the exams. There are 12 full day sessions operating, which means our students do not have to go to
Melbourne to get this fantastic assistance.
Our NAPLAN data came out this week, and on initial inspection we are very pleased with the results, particularly
in Year 9 Writing. We will be analysing our results in detail and using this feedback to gain even better results in
the future.
Parent/Student/Teacher interviews were an opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers, so I hope you were
able to attend the session Thursday evening or Friday. Working together is the best way to ensure good outcomes
for our young people.
On Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th September our students competed in the Victorian Schools Volleyball Cup 1
day competition at the State Volleyball Centre in Dandenong. On Tuesday our year 7 girls came third, receiving
bronze medals, the year 7 boys fourth and the year 8 girls fifth. On Wednesday, the 9A girls’ team competed
winning a gold medal, with the 9B girls coming fourth and the year 9 boys winning silver. An excellent result!
This term has gone so quickly. Have a lovely holiday, stay safe and relax, and we will see you at the beginning of
Term 4.

CASEY MEN’S MENTOR BREAKFAST 2013
On Friday 23rd August, Mark Morante (Year 10) and Patrick
Mastertoun (Year 12) attended The City of Casey’s Men’s
Mentor Breakfast. The breakfast gave students an
opportunity to develop networking skills and explore
career options by talking with professionals from various
fields.
Highly regarded speaker Max Walker was the highlight of
the event, inspiring students with his success stories from
his ALF and cricket careers and his experience directing
four companies.
The event proved to be an invaluable experience yet again!

NICOLE DEMONSTRATES HER CREATIVE TALENT
Year 12 Textiles students are working flat out to complete their folios and garments ready for assessment. A visit
to the rooms, you can see a beehive of industry with folios spread out on the tables and finishing touches being
applied to their client’s garments.
There are certainly some very talented students creating amazing garments
from complex design work. Nicole Westmorland, who was a Kenny 4 girl, is
one of these students. Her gown is inspired by aspects of the sea for her
client who is going to wear it in a dance and vocal production.
Many complex processes can be seen
using materials including polyester
satin, chiffon, sequins and a striking
laser cut vinyl bodice and sleeves.
We wish all the girls the best and wouldn’t be surprised if we hear their
names in the fashion industry in the future.

YEAR 11 CROSS COUNTRY SKI CAMP
On the 21st of August through to the 23rd of August, my Outdoor Education class as well as Mr Lees’ class headed
to Marysville for our Year 11 Ski Camp. We stayed at Camp Marysville in little cabins. There we had plenty of time
for a few intense games of Four Square (not that I stayed in very long). Our cabins were approximately a 40
minute drive up to Lake Mountain.
When we first started skiing we were all like baby giraffes learning to walk. It was very funny! We all had some
brutal stacks on the snow, but it was hilarious to watch everyone fall over or face plant. Mitch, the ski instructor
thought Chelsea was pretty hilarious as she couldn’t stand up right for more than 20 seconds at a time. By the end
of the day we were all exhausted, but had a beautiful trip back down the mountain to Camp Marysville.
The camp food was awesome; we had roasted vegetable salad and butter chicken on the first night and spaghetti
and meatballs the second.
The following day was much colder on the mountain as we had a lot of wind and rain to contend with. It was still
enjoyable to put into practice the skills that we had learnt the previous day. Altogether, the location was beautiful
and it was great to spend some time with some wonderful people and make some lasting memories.

YEAR 8 HIGH ACHIEVER PROGRAM EXCURSION
In an effort to challenge and engage year 8 students in the High Achiever Program (HAP) they recently completed
an interdisciplinary unit on disasters.
The students covered various topics:
• In Maths students studied relevant statistics such as survivors in the Hindenburg disaster
• Students studied weather patterns in Science and conducted experiments based on convection currents
in fluids and condensation
• In English the group viewed the film Titanic and were able to choose from a range of creative and
research-based activities
• During History students looked into the black plague, one of the most devastating pandemics in human
history
On Wednesday 11th September students visited IMAX viewing Forces of Nature 2D and Tornado Alley 3D. These
documentaries focused on natural disasters and the impact of these disasters upon people and places.
We hope students enjoyed the unit!

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN APPLIED LEARNING?
YEAR 9 APPLIED LEARNING PROGRAM
Since visiting the RSPCA site in Burwood late last term, the year 9
Applied Learning Students have raised $250 for the RSPCA Victoria.
The students baked and decorated their own cupcakes during their
Personal Development subject and sold the cupcakes to teachers
and students in their own time.
Berwick Secondary College, Newsletter 9, 20th September 2013
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN APPLIED LEARNING?....cont
On the RSPCA excursion students were able to see first-hand the work
RSPCA does for our community. They were able to hold, pat and feed
cats, dogs and farm animals and they listened to a presentation on how
they can help end animal cruelty.
The students had completed a detailed assignment on the RSPCA prior
to the excursion and have complemented their understanding with the
site visit and fundraising for the charity
YEAR 10 PRECAL In order to complete their Instructional Writing Competency for
Literacy, PRECAL students were asked to create a recipe and write
detailed instructions on how to complete the meal.
The class then travelled to the Dandenong Market to purchase their
produce and prepared their meal in class that afternoon to eat. This
task was integrated with Personal Development competencies such
as working in a team to complete a task, complementing the unit on
healthy eating and nutrition.
Some groups cooked some very tasty creations and hopefully they
may replicate them for their families.
YEAR 11 VCAL
Students in Intermediate VCAL have continued their partnerships with local primary schools completing more
tabloid sport fun days with Berwick Lodge, Beaconsfield and Upper Beaconsfield Primary Schools. The students
worked in teams to create fun and engaging minor games and activities for the primary school students to
complete in an afternoon of fun and fitness for all students. The primary school teachers and I thank the students
for their effort and enthusiasm, and the VCAL Personal Development staff who have worked hard to make these
events happen.
YEAR 12 VCAL
Our year 12 Senior VCAL students have been working on
biographies in Literacy this term. To complement this unit,
groups of students travelled to Villa Maria in Berwick on
Monday afternoons with their teacher Mrs Anne Osborne.
The students made cakes and scones for afternoon tea with
some of the residents and took cards and small board games to
play with them. This gave the students the opportunity to have
an informal chat as research for their biography. Karleigh
Phillps also entertained the group with a short piano recital.
Other Senior VCAL students worked at the sausage sizzle on Election Day at the school. I would like to thank Mr
Gary Black and Ms Cheryl Madden for their time and effort on this day.

HOLLOWS WEEK!
Learning teams were named after people that had made a difference in various fields. Our team was named for
Fred Hollows to recognise the wonderful difference that he made to so many.
A very important part of being involved in a learning team at Berwick Secondary College is the community service
aspect. In 2009 Learning Team Hollows launched the Change for Change Appeal which aimed to raise money for
The Fred Hollows Foundation.
We made a pledge that we would raise at least $125 each year in an effort to change the lives of 5 people through
the hard work of the Fred Hollows Foundation. This year we raised $318.30 – meaning that we are going to play a
part on changing the lives of at least 12 people!
We have a fabulous group of students who donated their time and ingredients to bake a morning tea for staff.
Thanks must also go to those students that helped out with our wonderful home group activity, for selling sweet
treats and for helping to count the money!
Thank you especially to:

CAR PARKING ……waiting for your child to finish school
Could parents please be mindful of the rights of our neighbours when parking while waiting for their child to finish
school? It has been reported that parents have been parking across driveways particularly in Clover Close and Valda
Close.
Please be reminded that all students should be dropped off and picked up at the lower parking area, near the Leisure
Centre.
At time parents drop students off at the top staff car park. This area is unsafe as a drop off point due to staff parking,
the restricted area available and the fact that delivery vehicles need to access this area. Some drivers have been
observed attempting U turns, which can be very dangerous.
Please observe all advisory signs.
