Parent Teacher Interviews
Thank you to all of our parents and caregivers who have already booked an
appointment to see their child’s teacher next week. Please phone the office before the end of
this week to schedule an appointment if you have not yet done so.
Mobile Phones Policy
I would like to remind everyone that it is the Department of Education’s policy that primary
school students are not allowed to have a mobile phone on them, or in their possession, during
the school day.
The policy states:
“Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are not permitted to have mobile phones in their
possession during the school day. If a student brings a mobile phone to school, an appropriate
storage approach or location will be determined by the school”
If your child brings their mobile phone to school, it needs to be brought to the front office, where
we have arranged for safe storage during the day.
Cyber Safety
Safe and appropriate use of the internet and social media is an ongoing concern for parents
across the world. A new app, Beacon, has been developed by the Telethon Institute to keep
parents up to date with trusted information, to keep your children safe online.
I encourage you to go to their website at https://beacon.telethonkids.org.au/ to have a look at
this free service.
In a fast-changing world, it is good to know there are research based, reliable resources to assist
us as parents. Of course nothing will compare to having a firm understanding of what your child
is engaging in online and is able to access.
As this is our last newsletter for the term, I hope everyone has a chance to recharge and relax
over the holiday break. Let’s hope the weather is kind to us and we have some lovely sunshine!
Ms Cathy Willis
Principal

Dockers Cup Our Dockers Cup team was full of high spirits on Thursday as they competed in five games of football against other primary schools. The Albany Primary girls won a game and drew a game, however Mount Lockyer Primary School were hard to beat and came out undefeated on the day. Well done Mount Lockyer! Everyone proudly demonstrated their RISE qualities whilst representing the school. Congratulations to Zeva, who was voted Fairest and Best Player. Thank you to Mr Dawson and Ms Quartermaine for coaching and escorting the team to the Cup event.
Interschool Spelling Competition
Albany Primary School was well represented at the Interschool Spelling Competition last week. The Year 3/4 team came 2nd and 3rd in their events, after facing Spencer Park Primary School in a tie-breaker! Well done to Spencer Park for their well-earned win. The Year 5/6 team came 5th and 7th, with Mount Barker Community College taking out first place. Congratulations to all competitors! And thank you to Albany Limousine and Charters for stepping in and assisting with transporting our teams to the event.

Students In The Spotlight Oscar from Room 7, Robbie from Room 6, and Seumas from Room 9 all took part in the Under 9s MTB XC ‘Bikes and Beats’ in Denmark on Father's Day. Nathan from Room 21 took part in the Under 11s. Seumas came in first place for U9s, but they all got equally muddy! Well done to all the boys for competing.
Molly and Lola from Room 7 competed in Perth in August with Albany’s Flipzone team. The competition was to mark the return of gymnastics and trampolining after the closure of sporting events due to COVID -19 earlier this year. Lola won a gold medal for a trampoline event and another for her level two synchro, and came third place in the double mini trampoline competition. Molly earned a gold medal in level two synchro (with Lola) and a silver medal in level one double mini trampoline. Congratulations Molly and Lola.
Year 6 Bike Education The Year 6 students have been busy, weather permitting, practicing their bike-riding skills in preparation for the Rottnest Camp later this year. So far there has been an outing to Emu Point and the Munda Biddi trail. Some of the events had to be rescheduled due to rain, and we thank our students and parents for rolling with the changes. We also want to pass on a BIG thank you to the Albany Mountain Bike Club for providing a trailer for the Munda Biddi event; it was extremely helpful and we appreciate the Club’s generosity. We hope you enjoy the photos over the next two pages of all the bike-riding action and fun had at the Munda Biddi Trail Ride.

Perth Scorchers Visit On Monday of Week 10 Perth Scorchers will be visiting the school. APS students of any age can come and play cricket with their friends and the Scorchers staff between 8.15am and 8.50am. The Scorchers staff will be enforcing COVID-19 health and safety guidelines during the session. Hand sanitiser will be available and all equipment will be cleaned before and after the session. We encourage parents and carers of younger children to come along and enjoy the session with your child, however all in attendance will be required to adhere to 1.5m social distancing. Also, unfortunately Blaze the Mascot will not be present on the day as advertised, for COVID-19 health and safety reasons. If your child cannot attend on the day and is keen on playing cricket over Summer, Tim’s contact information is provided on the flyer (right). We hope to see all our cricket enthusiasts next Monday morning!
P&C News
We are coming to the end of another busy term for our P&C!
Our new uniforms have been ordered and we are very excited to see them next year - they should arrive in time for
back-to-school sales before Term 1 starts. A reminder you can still wear current uniform shirts and jackets for this year
and ALL of next year, and faction shirts will remain acceptable uniform beyond
this as they are changing only a tiny bit. ALL stock is currently 30% off to make
room for our new order, and some things are cheaper again so now is a great time
to think about stocking up!
The Fathering Project is holding a great "Paper Planes and Pizza" night this Friday.
We hope to see Dads, Uncles and other father figures there to test their paper
folding skills!
Next week is Bus Week. If you catch a bus to school, look for the Your Move team
as you come down the stairs and you may win some cool prizes.
Lastly – there is Canteen Special day to coincide with the RISE discos – a yummy
pizza or sushi lunch. Order forms come home this week, orders open next week
(both in person before school and online) and we can't wait to serve up some
delicious hot pizzas to celebrate the end of term!
Our next meeting will be held on Monday night of week 3 next term - 26th October at 7pm. We always welcome new members so feel free to drop in and see what your P&C is up to next, we'd love to
see you there! Mrs Jane Hare, P&C President

Your Move!
Walk Safely to School Day went very well last week – with the brilliant weather a big help! We had about 30 students
join in the two group walks, with lots more coming independently from home - an estimated 100+ students all
together.
The next Your Move event to look forward to is next week – Week 10 is School Bus Week!
Look for this map on the APS Facebook page and
plot your journey to school during School Bus Week.

Health & Wellness
Scoliosis Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It can be detected by a simple examination of the back. The normal spine has three curves – one in the neck, on in the upper back and one in the lower back. These curves can be seen from the side, but when you look from behind the spine should appear straight. If the spine has a sideways curve, this is scoliosis.
An information leaflet about Scoliosis will be distributed to all year 6 students. Please read through the information provided and check your child for scoliosis as described in the leaflet. If you have any concerns, please contact your General Practitioner or Community Health Nurse, Rochelle Klose on 98427566.
Colour Blindness
Colour blindness means that a person cannot distinguish some colours or see the colours differently to other people. Very few people who are colour blind are ‘blind’ to all colours. Commonly, the colours seen differently are greens, yellows, oranges and reds. An information leaflet on colour blindness will be distributed to all Pre-primary students this term. Please take the time to read the pamphlet. If you have any concerns, colour vision testing can be performed by some general practitioners, eye specialists or
optometrists. You can also contact your local Community Health Nurse, Rochelle Klose, on 98427566. For more information see the Colour Blind Awareness and Support Group on http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/~doverton/

Scabies Treatment
Over the past week we have had several confirmed cases of scabies across the school. If there is a confirmed case in
your child’s class, you will be notified in writing.
Scabies is an uncommon, acute, parasitic infection caused by a mite which burrows beneath the surface of the skin.
Symptoms include intense itching between the fingers or on the wrists, elbows, armpits and buttocks.
Transmission: Skin to skin contact with an infected person or contact with infected clothing, towels or bedding.
Incubation period: 2 to 6 weeks before the onset of itching if not previously infested. People who have been previously infected may develop an itch 1 to 4 days after re-exposure.
Infectious period: Until mites and eggs are destroyed. Exclusion: Exclude until the day after treatment has commenced. Treatment: Treatment available – refer to chemist.
Bed linen, towels and clothing used in the previous 5 days should be washed in hot water.
Please be vigilant for any signs of infection and see your Pharmacist or GP for diagnosis/treatment. If your child has contracted scabies and you have not already notified the school, please do so to enable the preventative measures above.
Thank you all for your cooperation.
