From the Principal’s Desk Congratulations to Mrs Crouch for all of her hard working organising a week long parent visit as part of Science Week celebrations. The huge number of families who were able to come to school and attend their child’s Science lesson were treated to the outstanding program we offer in Science through Mrs Crouch’s expertise. Our students were justifiably proud to show their families their science skills. Room 16b and Room 18 put together a video of what our Pre-primary and Year 1’s participate in during lessons in class and in the Science room as part of their combined class assembly last week. The video of Ms Guilfoyle and Miss Garlick’s classes is able to be viewed on the school website under the Curriculum tab/Science. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the classroom link. We have recently applied for selection to be part of the 2019 school grant for funding support to improve our Science room and resources. We will know early in the new year if we are successful. It is Literacy and Numeracy Week for Burrendah PS. Students have been treated to a number of extra events. The lunchtime movies have been a big hit particularly with our rainy weather. We look forward to a fine day tomorrow for our Book Parade. Students are encouraged to come as their favourite book character. During the faction assembly/Book Parade we will also announce the winners of the Book poster competition from Years1-6 and the colouring competition for our Pre-primary students. From Friday 31st August a number of classrooms will be open for parents to visit during Mathematics lessons. See further in the newsletter for the classes involved and their scheduled times. The P&C will announce the Feet First Competition winners at our Book Parade. Students will be selecting their pre ordered Father’s Day gifts tomorrow (24th August) in school time. The Father’s Day breakfast, being organised by the P&C, is on next week Friday 31st August . So we can cook up a great breakfast for all fathers, grandfathers, father figures and their children please RSVP by tomorrow Friday 24th August. Spare notes are available for our new Parent Information board which is in Magpie Block (outside Room 26). Our father figures will then be invited into classrooms from 8:30am for a quick visit before our assembly commences. Please note our assembly for Room 15 and 11 will start a little later than normal at 9am to enable our father figures to visit their child’s classroom. If you are interested in purchasing a coffee before school on Friday 31st August, a coffee van will be near the undercover area. Congratulations to our wonderful staff who supported so many of our students with World Vision last week in an after school event. Our senior students were not only beautifully behaved but they had a great time and learnt so much about this worthwhile cause. Mrs French did an amazing job organising this event. Thankyou to the families who have completed our National School Opinion Survey hps://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/ f5bssyFY . We have 66 completed surveys and 59 surveys that have been started. With 488 families at Burrendah Primary School we are looking towards a large number of people giving their opinion on the future direction of your school. Parents as Partners is on again next Thursday 30th August in the school hall from 9-10:30am. The area of curriculum being looked at is Mathematics for Kindy to Year 6. The topics are operate and calculate. These hands on sessions provide parents the opportunity to work with our maths materials in the same way your children do to help develop understanding on how maths is used in our classrooms. This will also help parents support their children with maths at home. All parents/carers are welcome. Janine Kinninment 23rd August 2018

Science News Last week was national Science Week. Our celebration of Science began with our Year 6 students taking part in a nationwide event set up by CSIRO with a focus on STEM professionals. They were then given the opportunity to listen to a STEM professional (a mathematician who works for CSIRO) who visited Burrendah to share his career pathway, the interesting work he does and share challenging mathematical activities.

A second in-school activity was a complimentary Firetech National Science Week Presentation at our school. The topic was The Science of Flight with Mini Drones. Students learned about the concept of flight and had a great time constructing and flying mini drones.

The main part of Burrendah Science Week was the Open Week held

in the Science Lab. It was fantastic to see about 250 parents and

family members share the excitement of science with our students.

Many thanks to all who were able to join us. Our students really appreciated your

participation in our celebration of Science Week.

Interschool Cross Country Students from Years 4, 5, and 6 represented Burrendah at the Cross Country Carnival held at Piney Lakes last Wednesday. They competed against local schools over a 2km course set in bush land around the lake. We appreciate the efforts made by our students to train and prepare for this challenging event. They displayed great resilience on the day to compete to the best of their ability. Thank you to the parents who were able to offer their support and to Mrs Anna Cilia for coaching advice for our team.

PP/1’s looked at ‘The Magic Hat’ and designed our own Magic Hat!

Year 1’s looked at ‘Giraffe’s Can’t Dance’ and created a Giraffe who could dance!

Year 2’s read ‘Mister Seahorse’ by Eric Carle and created a colourful seascape collage.

Year 4’s have been looking at Perth illustrator Shaun Tan, in particular his book and animation ’The Lost Thing’. We completed observational drawings of found objects and transformed them into our own ‘Lost Thing’

Year 5’s have been looking at local artist Kyle Hughes-Odgers. We read his book ‘Can a Skeleton have an X-ray?’ and are designing a page for the book.

Year 6’s looked at the illustrator Sandra Dieckmann and have created a monochromatic landscape collage inspired by her book ‘Leaf’

Notizie Italiane

In Italian Class. Students in Year 4, Rm 10 students have been lucky enough to have 3 students from Year 11 at Willetton Senior High School (WSHS) help in the class on Fridays. This is part of WSHS work experience program. Two of the students are still doing Italian and are able to directly support students with their work. The other is doing French and the similarity in the languages means he has been able to help out as well.

Why Do We Learn Italian? Students often ask this question. Knowledge of Italian is important to students doing music and is an entree for listeners to the world of classical music. All the specialised words of classical music are Italian; for example, adagio, forte, tempo etc. This is because when the conventions of music were being developed (in the Renaissance) Italian composers were central in its development, and Italian was therefore incorporated into the art.

Buon Viaggio - Tips for travelling to Italy. Italy has more UNESCO world heritage sites than any other country in the world and 60% of the world’s art treasures. While there is so much to see in the landscape in Italy, no visit is complete without going to one of the spectacular galleries and museums such as the Vatican Museum in Rome and the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence.

However, long queues for these venues are the norm and particularly in peak season, may be kilometres long. To avoid the longest queues book ahead online for tickets or join a tour group. Check opening hours as they vary and some may even be closed on certain days of the week, most commonly on Monday.

Woolworth’s Visit Mr Holyoake’s Number group have been studying financial concepts. In

groups they planned and designed a smoothie within a $10 budget and

then went across to Woolworths to purchase the items. The students

had to use a range of mathematical

concepts to find the best possible deal,

whilst calculating the change to be

given and ensure they make enough

smoothies for their entire group.

Maria Loss-Suehrcke Italian Language Specialist

Year 3 students have been learning about how to describe the face in Italian.

Year 5/6 students have been describing the fictional Bruni family in Italian.

Senior students test each other on their Italian vocabulary list.

Page 7: From the Principal’s Deskburrendahps.wa.edu.au/sites/default/files/Burrendah... · The British monarchy was the focus of the second session of Culture Club England so everyone made

The British monarchy was the focus of the second session of Culture Club England so everyone made their own crowns. The students learned about the British Royal family and their castles. While most of the children had heard about or had seen pictures of the recent wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle they did not make the connection between the Queen who features on one side of all our Australian coins and her grandchildren.

The students were so surprised to learn that Great Britain was quite small and

could fit into Australia 58 times. Many thanks to Mrs French, Mrs. Partington,

Mrs Brown, Mrs Bigwood and Mrs Lad for running the sessions and contributing

their knowledge and resources so that our students can learn about England.

Japanese Visitors to Burrendah

Twenty Japanese students and two of their teachers from Willetton Senior High School’s partner school “The High School of the University of Hyogo” visited Burrendah on August 9. They were warmly welcomed by our Japanese extension students in Year 6 before delivering a short presentation about their school in Japan to our Year 2 Students.

All of our Year 2 students enjoyed learning how to make origami animals and ninja stars from these lovely students. The high school students used this opportunity to practise their developing English language skills. It was a delight to watch the interaction between our young students and our Japanese visitors.

Willetton Senior High School and their sister school in Japan have

enjoyed these exchange visits between the two high schools for 24

years. This successful relationship between the two schools, is made

possible through the hospitality of families in both countries who

welcome the students into their homes during their two week stay.

During their stay, the Japanese students and their teachers visited a

number of Perth attractions and attended English lessons at the high

school.

Kate French - World Vision Coordinator

World Vision 2018

Our World Vision Market on Friday 17th August raised in excess of $1600. Thank you to everyone for making this event such a success. Seventy-eight Year 5 & 6 students stayed behind after school on Thursday 16th August for our Famine Fun evening. Students collected sponsors and donations for World Vision and kept themselves busy with a range of activities: Carrying buckets of water made them realise how lucky we are to be able to turn on a tap. Worked creatively to design bunting for our World Vision Market. Worked cooperatively to design and make a new sport using newspaper, tape and string. Using a short story as a stimulus to create a scene through drama. We were very fortunate to have a representative from World Vision, Mark Labrow, who spent the day with us at Burrendah Primary School last Thursday. He was extremely impressed with our students and commented on their capacity to think deeply. Many thanks to staff who gave up their own time after school to enable this event to take place. Our online fund-raising is currently at $1561. If you would like to donate to our world vision fund-raising please follow this link https://40hf2018.everydayhero.com/au/burrendah2018 . Year 5 & 6 students involved in the World Vision Famine Fun evening on Thursday 16th August need to bring all sponsor money to school by Tuesday 28th August. Thank you to everyone for your support with our World Vision fundraising. Together we can make a difference to the lives of people around the world less fortunate than ourselves.
